Airshow China 2018 Expo Highlights-1

Airborne Multi-Mode Radars
Air-Defence Guided-Weapons
The FM-2000 SHORADS (above) is meant primarily for export and it visually resembles the TOR-M1 SHORADS, which China had acquired in the 1990s from Russia. The replacement for these TOR-M1s is the FM-3000 (below), which was recently service-inducted.
The FM-90 SHORADS (below) is presently in services with the armies of Bangladesh, China and Pakistan.
Air-Defence Radars
Avionics
Battlefield Support Missiles
NLOS-BSMs of Chinese origin are presently being marketed by two state-owned entities: China National Precision Machinery Import & Export Corp (CPMIEC), and Aerospace Long-March International Trade Co Ltd (ALIT).
CPMIEC’s 2-tonne B-611MR missile is designed to attack supply lines, warehouses, ballistic/cruise missile launch sites, SAM batteries, command-and-control centres, air bases, road/railway transportation hubs, and area targets in urban surroundings. Armed with a 480kg HE warhead, the B-611M has 280km range. Up to two cannister-mounted B-611Ms can be carried by a wheeled TEL.
Another NLOS-BSM from CPMIEC is the P-12, which made its public debut in November 2006. Up to two P-12s are carried in an enclosed compartment mounted on a 6 x 6 TEL. The P-12 has a range of 150km, and it comes armed with either a 300kg HE blast fragmentation warhead, or a cluster warhead containing 19 anti-armour sub-munitions. Both the B-611M and P-12 have a CEP of about 2 metres when using a RLG-INS coupled to a GPS receiver, plus an optronic sensor for terminal homing. CPMIEC’s latest NLOS-BSM offering is the vertically-launched joint attack rocket & missile (JARM) system, which can fire both the 280km-range BP-12A and the 200km-range SY-400 from a common launch platform.
The improved BP-12B BSM has a range of up to 295km. The JARM, which made its public debut in November 2010, makes use of combined GPS-RLG-INS navigation systems to achieve a CEP of 3 metres  A typical JARM Battery comprises ten 8 x 8 TELs housing either 80 SY-400s or 20 BP-12As, or a combination of both.
ALIT’s latest product is the M-20. Capable of striking targets between 70km and 270km, the all-weather capable M-20, with a Mach 3 cruise speed, comes armed with both a 200kg unitary high-explosive (HE) blast-fragmentation warhead for engaging high-value and time-sensitive targets, as well as a sub-kiloton yield tactical nuclear warhead. Two P-20s housed inside cannisters are mounted on a 8 x 8 transporter/erector/launcher (TEL). For navigation purposes, use is made of a RLG-INS coupled to a GPS receiver (for receiving high-accuracy navigational updates in secure PY-code from China’s ‘Beidou’ constellation of GPS satellites), and an infra-red sensor for terminal homing that gives the missile a CEP of less than 10 metres.
Combat Aircraft
Helicopters
The design and capabilities of the joint AHL heavilift helicopter co-development project between China and Russia have been revised. The helicopter now has increased in maximum takeoff weight to 38.7 tonnes, putting it in the class between the CH-47F Chinook and the Mi-26T. Similarly, the maximum range of the AHL helicopter has been increased from 630km to 800km, with ramp access for 10 tonnes internal payload, or 15 tonnes underslung load. The initial agreement to jointly develop this helicopter was signed by the two countries in 2016.
Space Technology
Supersonic Anti-Ship Cruise Missiles
Thrust-Vectoring Nozzles
The adjustable cover-plates on the exhaust nozzle—the so-called ‘turkey feathers’—are designed with saw-tooth edges to reduce the J-10B M-MRCA’s radar cross section (RCS). TVC nozzles of such a design have proven to significantly reduce both RCS and infra-red signature. The J-10B equipped with a thrust-vectoring nozzle that is fitted to the homegrown Woshan WS-10B3 turbofan, whose TTSL has yet to be established.
Turbofans
Beijing has dramatically stepped up the development of new-generation turbofans and turboshafts since the turn of the century, with at least US$23.7 billion being invested on R & D activitiers between 2010 and 2015. The principal R & D players are the Shenyang Liming Aero-Engine Group for the Shenyang Aircraft Co; Xi’an Aero-Engine Group for the Xi’an Aircraft Co; and Chengdu Aero-Engine Group/Guizhou Liyang Aero-Engine Group for the Chengdu Aircraft Co. In addition, AVIC Commercial Aircraft Engines (ACAE), a company formed in August 2016 with an investment of around $7.5 billion and through the merger of 24 companies with about 10,000 employees, is spearheading the development of turbofans for commercial airliners and business jets now being developed by Commercial Aircraft Corp of China, Ltd (COMAC).
Being developed are the 78kN-thrust CJ-500 turbofan and the 80kN-thrust WS-12C Tianshan turbofan for mid-sized business jets, the 340kN-thrust CJ-2000 turbofan for the Sino-Russian CR-929 widebody airliner, and the 196kN thrust CJ-1000AX Changjiang turbofan for the C-919 narrow-body airliner. This is a twin-spool, unmixed, high-bypass ratio direct-driven turbofan with clockwise co-rotating spool and five bearing-support struts for rotors. It includes a first-stage fan, three-stage booster section, 10-stage high-pressure compressor, single annular combustor section, two-stage high-pressure (HP) turbine and a six-stage low-pressure (LP) turbine.
The Shenyang-Liping WS-20 high-bypass turbofan for the Xian Aircraft Industrial Corp Y-20 Kunpeng strategic airlifter has been developed to produce 14 metric tonnes of thrust, which will enable the Y-20 to achieve its maximum payload of 66 metric tonnes. Touted as China’s most powerful turbofan to be developed to date, the WS-20 has been flight-tested on an IL-76 testbed since 2014. The WS-10A is a low-bypass, two-shaft turbofan in the 130kN-thrust class. This engine had a TBO of only 30 hours, while the AL-31F turbofan powering the Su-27 had a 400-hour TBO. The WS-10A has suffered blade warp and destruction both during ground testing and also under high-RPM, rapid-turn conditions in flight that produce high centrifugal and g-forces. China’s third-generation single-crystal turbine blades can withstand temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees Celsius) and have found application on the 140kN thrust WS-10B turbofan, which has a TTSL of 1,500 hours. However, China still is far away from mastering the production technologies for superalloys, thermal barrier coatings, powder metallurgy, and single-crystal blades using rare-earth metals. The 150kN-thrust WS-15 Emei, designed for the Chengdu J-20 stealthy MRCA, exploded during a ground running test in 2015 due to quality-control issues with its single-crystal turbine blades. Lastly, there is the 49kN-thrust Minshan turbofan that has been developed for the for Hongdu L-15 lead-in fighter trainer. Turboshaft engines already developed by China include the 1,300shp WZ-9 for attack helicopters, 2,400shp WZ-10 for medium-lift helicopters, and the 525shp WZ-161 for light medium twin helicopters.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
Chinese companies like ASN Technology Group, China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp (CASIC), China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp (CASC), Zhuhai Yintong Energy, Weifan Freesky Aviation Industry Co, and AVIC Defense presently account for most of the UAVs and UCAVs built thus far. ASN Technology Group works closely with the Xian-based Northwestern Polytechnical University’s UAV Institute, and the Beijing- and Nanjing-based Universities of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA), Beijing Technology Company, Hebei Electric Power Reconnaissance Design Academy, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Shaanxi Engine Design Institute, Guizhou Aviation Industry Corp (GAIC), and the Chengdu Aircraft Design and Research Institute.
The CH-5 (above) is powered by a 456kW WJ-9A turboprop engine, while the CH-4 is equipped with a Rotax 014 piston engine imported from Austria’s BRP-Powertrain. More than 60% of all components for the Wing Loong family of UAS platforms come from private-sector companies of China. The CH-5 has a maximum takeoff weight of 4,200kg, nearly four times greater than the CH-4. Of its six hardpoints, four of them can carry double payloads, giving the UAS a potential payload of ten air-to-surface precision-guided munitions. Maximum takeoff weight is 4,200kg, maximum external load-carrying capacity is 480kg, maximum cruise speed is 370kph, service ceiling is 9km, and endurance is 20 hours. While the CH-4 is in service with China’s armed forces, the CH-5 has to date been ordered only by Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. On March 16 last year, Saudi Arabia’s the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology signed an industrial partnership agreement with the state-owned China Aerospace Science & Technology Corp (CASC) to establish a manufacturing plant in Saudi Arabia for as many as 300 CH-4 and CH-5 UAS platforms.
The CaiHong (Rainbow)-7 (above), developed by the 11th Research Institute of China Aerospace Science & Technology Corp (CASC) is a high-altitude, long-endurance, stealthy platform with claimed significant penetration capabilities. The flying wing measures 72 feet (22 metres) wide and has a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 13 tonnes, payload of 2 tonnes, and top speed of Mach 0.75. While the aircraft remains in the developmental stage, a corporate video shows that first flight is planned for 2019 and it will enter production by 2022. If successful, it will validate the capabilities of China to develop a fly-by-wire flight-control system for a large, tailless flying wing and could even pave the way for the country’s next-generation H-20 strategic bomber project.
The China Academy of Aerospace and Aerodynamics (CAAA) has developed the CH-10 tilt-rotor UAV (above) that is a new-design vehicle integrating helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft technology. The main mission of the CH-10 is to accompany large- and medium-sized warships or ground forces and to conduct intelligence, reconnaissance, detection, communications relay, search, target identification, and relay guidance to ground stations. The shift of flight modes is done through the tilting rotor. It can take off and land on destroyers and frigates.
The Cloud Shadow (below) is a family of swept-wing platforms. Though AVIC says this UAS first flew on May 16, 2016, it has not specified which variant. There are three variants now being promoted: imagery reconnaissance (designated CS-1), electronic reconnaissance (CS-2), and reconnaissance-strike (CS-3). Each of them is powered by a WP-11C turbojet mounted between the butterfly tails, providing a claimed maximum speed of 281 Knots and cruise speed of 227 Knots. Endurance is five hours and cruising altitude is 41,000 feet. Maximum takeoff weight is 3,200kg, while the wingspan is 66 feet. The first two variants have an internal 200kg payload capacity, while the CS-3 has an external payload of 400kg, spread across four pylons (two of which are of the twin-rack type). According to AVIC, a full load-out consists of a single FT-7A 100kg range-extended, precision-guided glide-bomb, and a pair of LS-6/50s, the 50kg version of the LS-6 laser-/TV-guided bomb. The CS-2 features a pair of ELINT/COMINT sensors in a fairing below the nose. AVIC claims a frequency range of 0.8-18GHz at up to 400km for the former and 0.1-2GHz at up to 200km for the latter. The CS-1 carries SAR and long range oblique photographic (LOROP) sensors. An operational concept image in the presentation shows the CS-1 flying 18km inside hostile airspace, and with effective standoff ranges for the LOROP of 68km, and 70km for the SAR. The GCS can be provided in fixed, vehicle-mounted or portable configurations, and features six user-defined touch-screen displays, a QWERTY keyboard with separate numerical keypad, and two joysticks. This can be used to control both the CH-4/CH-5 and Cloud Shadow UAS platforms. AVIC also provides data-links, including a C/UHF-band line-of-sight link, Ku-, Ka- and S-band satellite links, an L-band miniature link for the A-Hawks, and all associated ground terminals.
The JY-300 early-warning UAV (below) from the China Electronics Technology Group Corp’s (CETC) 38th Research Institute was first unveiled last June. It features miniaturised active phased-array radar strips installed on the two sides of the fuselage and the leading-edge of the wings. Unlike most conventional UAVs with a radar payload, the integrated and conformal design of the JY-300 reduces drag and thus retains most of the UAV’s inherent flight performances. CETC claims that the radar suite has a range of around 620 miles (1,000km) and can provide surveillance of hostile warships, helicopters, and missiles from a standoff range. Additionally, the UAV presents a smaller radar cross-section, and the unmanned and cheaper nature of the platform allows the user to free up heavier manned AEW &CS platforms for more critical airborne battle management operations.
China Aerospace Science & Industry Corp’s (CASIC) turbofan-powered WJ-700 high-altitude, high-speed UCAV (below) strongly resembles the MQ-9 Reaper and CH-5 UCAV, with a turbofan replacing the rear-mounted propeller. The WJ-700 has an MTOW of 3.5 tonnes, and endurance of 20 hours. CASIC describes the WJ-700 as designed for long-range anti-ship missions, anti-radiation missions, as well as electronic warfare and jamming. The concept model suggests four underwing pylons for a variety of munitions, including the CM-502KG anti-ship cruise missile and the CM-102 anti-radiation missile.
Two unmanned helicopters made test-flights in 2017 on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. While the AV-500W conducted firing tests at an altitude of 4,300 metres in Qinghai province on November 18, 2017 (according to Jiangxi provincial office of science, technology and industry for national defence), at 4,600 metres above sea level, on November 9, 2017 an XM-20 multi-rotor unmanned drone took off and landed with a full payload. The AV-500W had earlier climbed to an altitude of 5,006 metres during tests on October 31, the maximum achieved by a domestically-made unmanned helicopter. These VTOL-UAVs have applications in counter-terrorism, drug policing, border patrols, meteorology and mapping. The aircraft were developed by a helicopter research and development institute in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, owned by AVIC. The institute began work on unmanned helicopters in 2004.
AVIC had revealed two updated designs of its AV-500W VTOL-UCAV at the fourth China Helicopter Exposition held in Tianjing in mid-September 2017. The AV-500W was unveiled at the 2016 Zhuhai Airshow. Its designers from the China Helicopter Research & Development Institute have now given the AV-500W a smaller and sleeker appearance. The design concept is similar to that of the Northrop Grumman MQ-8B Firescout, but one-third the weight of its Western counterpart. The airframe measures 7.2 metres/23.6 feet long, 2.3 metres/7.5 feet high and 1.6 metres/5.2 feet wide, and its maximum takeoff weight has been reduced from 470kg/1,036 lb to 450kg/992 lb based on the latest specifications. The VTOL-UCAV has a maximum speed of 170kph, and a combat radius of 200km. The primary armaments include the new FT-8D anti-armour guided-missile carried on four underwing hardpoints. The FT-8D is a semi-active laser-guided missile with a range of up to 5km.  According to AVIC, this missile was tested in the early half of 2017 and yielded satisfactory results. The AV-500W can also carry conventional bombs, as well as external loads relevant to search-and-rescue operations. Countries in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, such as Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, have shown interest in this VTOL-UCAV, especially for counter-insurgency missions. The AV-500W is the armed variant of the AV-500 civilian UAV, which is 2.415 metres high, 7.204 metres long and can take off at up to 470kg maximum weight, with mission payloads not exceeding 160kg, including 120kg of equipment, including an optronic ball, a SAR radar and other communications devices. The UAV has an 8-hour autonomy in flight and is capable of reaching 4,000 metres of altitude at a maximum speed of 170kph.

  6. A formidable display of capabilities and equipment there at Zhuhai. They have upped the game by a good notch, in line with becoming the biggest economy of the world in 3 decades, at most, I think. This is a sure sign that they are serious about what role they intend to play in the world's geo-politics in the coming decades.

They also have the advantage of massive funding, which in total would be crossing $ 200 billion in the year 2018-2019, if I am not wrong. Beside you have another double that amount being invested by the private companies who have taken up a massive investment drive in defense equipment sector. Not to mention the investments that are in the non-declared strategic areas of defense.

According to Abraham Denmark of DoD, US, “The true expenditure, DoD estimates, in terms of total military-related spending for 2015, exceeded $180 billion in 2015,”.

    https://dod.defense.gov/News/Article/Article/759522/dod-report-chinas-military-investments-continue/

India on the other hand invests a small fraction of that in defense and a minimum amount in R&D. But we have started lately towards the right direction, albait very slowly, like the Elephant that our country is associated with.

But we should not compare ourselves to China, always, in terms of what they are doing and what we are doing. We need to do that only as far as that, it pushes us to power our Researched-in-India, Make-In-India & Made-In-India efforts. And also in terms of changing our outlook. We need to make sure that our chalta-hai attitude and anything that is foreign has to be good, these are changed. Then we will be in the right direction.

The next century will be China's and India's, we have to make sure that we stay focused and do course correction, despite our extremely diverse society, culture and attitudes, while taking all along this journey.

  7. Dear Sir

    For India the Question is
Which of the Above Systems are a Real Threat And how should we counter them

In Mountainous Terrain , Technology has its Limitations

Instead of UCAVs , we should buy
More Sukhois ; More Rafales ; And More AWACS

  9. To SUJIT & PRASHANT & UNKNOWN/BUDDHA & VR & KANE & ARUN: I can comfirm that 98% of asll that is being showcased in this expo is meant SOLELY for export & that too only for the active troublespots in the Middle East, Africa & Latin America. Although it is an aerospace expo, since 2016 the expo has also witnessed mobility demos of all types of armoured vehicles, which will be highlighted in Part-2 of this thread.

And here’s an excellent discussion on Islamic Law, the Nation State & the Case of Pakistan:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wKgYNa6NE4

To TECHNOLOGY, PHOTOGRAPHY & TRAVEL: VMT, for I had an excellent timje staying away from anything & everything to do with Deepavali, leaving the clueless ‘netas’ to do all the necessary needful in terms of ritualistic religiosity, so that I could focus on far more important matters, like this expo at Zhuhai. Here are some videoclips of the expo, which no one from India has even bothered to cover:

If by small cells you are referring to fuel-cells, then YES, they are being used for powering comms networks at high-altitude areas.

To BROWN DESI: As I had explained several times before, the AK-103 is meant only for select CAPF formations, the Assam Rifles & the Rashtriya Rifles. AK-103s will NOT equip all IA infantry formations across-the-board. As for war memorials, neither is the National War memorial anywhere near completion in Delhi, nor has the MoD bothered to honour those Indian soldiers who laid down their lives during the IPKF operations in Sri Lanka/ In fact, it is Sri Lanka that has built a war memorial to honour India’s fallen warriors!), nor does it even bother to remember those Indian soldiers who had sacrificed their lives in China during the Opium Wars & Boxer Rebellion, or during the invasion of Lhasa early in the previous century. Instead, it finds it very comfortable to remember only those Indians who laid down their lives during the 2 World Wars of the previous century.

  10. It is quite clear that whilst China is forging ahead and adopted 21st century model of war fighting capability, India on the other hand is stuck in the 1947 and the old Soviet "overwhelm" mindset - rushing manpower and cavalry like on a soccer field. Naturally guns, artillery and foot soldiers are a thing of the past - 10% of any war today would be fought face to face the other 90% would be via technology and planning. I reckon like China's defence budget, India's total spending on frivolous things are completely understated/underrated. Expenses on Statues, Temples, various festivities and associated activities far exceed China's R&D budget. The leaders would still worry about "Choli ke piche kya hain" or "Jungia ke niche kya hain" questions than what can we do to catch up to China in modernisation in all sectors not just defence.

Are sanctions applicable to China as russia?

It all appears that hey are following a dictum from MAO,s book That" power flows from the barrel of a gun"
now how does the free world stop China from dominating , ie financially and militarily?

    Very very good information
Looking at above slides gets the feeling india is way way behind the Chinese
Already IAF is having dwindling nos of squadrons and China investing so much on R&D and investing on UAV platforms, india won't be able to match with her. Secondly supporting and allying Pakistan bu china will prove a major hurdle
    1. How can India wade off this thing
    2. What cost effective technologies india can invest in to deter this
    3. What alliances india can forge in
    4. Can India ever get to the levels Chinese are currently qt

  15. To BUDDHA: The Super Su-30MKI upgrade package includes the provision of both high-band & low-band on-board jammers, just as it is the case with the Rafale MMRCA.

To RAD: ALL the armoured vehicles & majority of air-defence systems showcased at the expo were in desert camouflage, i.e. they are meant for the Middle East/West Asia. Countries like Syria & Iraq & Libya will take decades to re-equip, while all their neighbours require new-generation weapons for force modernisation. Then there’s Latin America too. Hence, there’s no dearth of markets & all that’s reqd is savvy marketing & that’s why China has between 2012 & now sold far more UAVs worldwide than the US or Israel, especially the armed UAVs. WRT J-10 with TVC, one must not forget that it can today perform the Cobra manoeuvre only with TVC, whereas the Su-27s could do so without any TVC. Supermanovrability isn’t reqd if all-aspect SRAAMs integrated with HMDS are available. What is imperative, however, today is supercruise.

To THE ENGDOC SOCIETY: VMT. Only learned & well-read leadership can ensure that India optimises her national power, of which the military might is only 1 component. Today, the country’s netas spend 98% of their time in politicking, thereby leaving no time for getting themselves educated to various subject matters, especially administrative reforms.

To DILBERT: He has been barking up the wrong tree from the outset WRT Rafale issue. And that’s because he, like the overwhelming of Indian citizens, has been fed with bullshit over the past 70 years that propagates the lie about licenced-production serving as the principal catalyst for promoting self-reliance in military-technical & military-industrial arenas! Licenced-production can graduate to joint product development only if an Indian OEM sticks to one foreign OEM as its principal industrial partner. But if foreign OEMs keep changing (like yesterday it was MiG, today it is Sukhoi & tomorrow it is Dassault), then long-term industrial partnerships can never be forged. For instance, all those countries that had gone for the F-16 & now going for the F-35 JSF, thereby maintaining their military-technical & military-industrial linkages with Lockheed Martin & Pratt ^ Whitney. But such trends are still foreign to India & therefore such paradigms will take a lot more time to sink in & get absorbed by India.

The chatter says that they will fit the air-cooled into the Block 1 & 2. Apparently the air-cooled one has passed most of the testing by PAF. That Block 1 aircraft has been flying with one for a while now. The other one will go into the Block 3. If they end up with 150+ aircraft with ASEA, how will that affect the air balance? Does that really give them greater chance to see first, shoot first?

  24. Dear Prasun ji
    1) I just heard a dicussion of Paul
hellyer, the former Canadian minister of defence in the 1960s.
He said that 4 alien races are in contact with us. If so why don't governments simply release the info?
Won't that put a full stop to all religious fervour instantly? That might be a massive uniting factor for humanity.

    2) The vedas don't just talk of gods but also humans with great powers like Rishi. So do other cultures.
Did such powerful humans capable of telekinesis exist? If so why aren't we able to tap into such power now, when we as a species are far more advanced?

    ReplyDelete
  25. To ASD: LoLz! The laws of physics dictate that when any combat aircraft airframe is being developed, the structural issues are the first ones to be sorted out, followed by aerodynamic optimisation. Hence, even before the aircraft takes to the skies, the internal cannon has to be fitted out & fired from ground-based airframe mock-ups, since it has a strong bearing on the structural integrity of the airframe. Now, in case of the Tejas, why has the cannon been left to be the last one to be tested out? So, when all others worldwide do it first, why is it in India it is being attempted as the last step in lieu of achieving FOC? Obviously the developers of the Tejas have got it all upside-down. Tjat in itself should tell you how sub-optimal the Tejas is.

To UNKNOWN: So what? What matters is when does it start snowing in the Karakoram mountain range, which is different from the Himalayan range. And whether India’s ‘netas’ like it or not, war is fast approaching, since the adversary has furiously at work in mobilizing its masses WRT the water issue by portraying India as the party that’s stealing Pakistan’s water, as explained in this programme aired last night:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcJl3nLCi14

Now, all known laws of nature states that if a short all-out or high-intensity limted war not lasting more than 14 days is to be fought, then the winning side will be the one that will possess a very high degree of mechanisation & mobility in all its fighting arms. That is still not the case with the IA, which continues to be infantry-heavy, which is good if a war is to be waged for 1 or 2 months.

To PV: How can the K-4 be deployed when the first three SSBNs—S-2/Arihant, S-3/Arighat & the S-4 will be identical, since they were designed from the outset as SSGNs? For any country with no-first-use nuclear doctrine, 50% of its strategic deterrent must be sea-based in order to appear credible. So, in case India wants 150 or 200 warheads of all types, then 50% of this must be deliverable by SLBMs & these SLBMs in turn need to carry MIRV warheads. So, by doing the math, India will require at least 36 SLBMs, with 12 on three SSBNs. Has the Arihant & its sister boats been designed to carry 12 MIRV-armed SLBMs?

To RAT: LoLz! I don’t base my opinions on ‘chatter’. Instead, I go by facts emanating from the OEMs. And these facts state that the LKF-601E air cooling airborne AESA-MMR will go on board the JF-17s, but only after another 6 years, since several R & D hurdles need to be overcome. And a visual comparison reveals that this AESA-MMR bears a close resemblance to the Vixen 500E AESA-MMR from Selex ES, now owned by Italy’s Leonardo Group.

To TECHNOLOGY, PHOTOGRAPHY & TRAVEL: That’s not ballast weight, but it is the compartment for stowing ammo rounds for the cannon. Since such rounds are not reqd to be carried to the expo venue, that compartment can be used for accommodating other kinds of cargo.

To MOHAN: What Pakistan will get is a temporary respite from the balance of payments crisis, which is only one component of the much larger economic crisis it faces, i.e. it has to raise its exports by making its industries competitive, which is not at all easy given that country’s very low investments in its human resources.

  33. Prasun sir, I was wondering, why didn't HAL which was already assembling a medium transporter like the Hawker Siddeley HS 748 Avro, use the blue prints / tooling to simply modify and modernize the design by adding a modern propeller design, improved engine, multi-function displays, ILS, ground proximity warning system, and since they have some experience in composite materials, add composite tail / wings etc. and then like the Chinese (Su 27 copied and re-named J 11) simply call it HT 25 aka HF 24....was just thinking. Instead of looking to build a transport aircraft from scratch and tying up with the Ruskies or anybody else, why not leverage existing capabilities and keep improving in stages to evolve a completely different aircraft compared to the original. Your thoughts Prasun sir...

  37. To PV: 1) Both K-15 & K-4 SLBMs are useless against China & therefore they both represent only the essential steps of the R & D ladder, which will culminate in the SLBM with MIRV warheads & 6,000km-range. 2) Yes, definitely. 3) Not JL-1 SLBMs, but only Babur-3 SLCMs that will be armed with tactical nuclear warheads & will be used against the IN’s carrier battle group so that the PN can maintain senial-denial capability out to a distance of 400km away from pakistan’s coastline. 4) It was because of the incident involving the USS Enterprise during the 1971 India-Pakistan war.

To SATYAKI: Yes, it can be won provided the war is limited to only 1 front & it lasts for a period lasting either 1 month or 3 months.

To UNKNOWN/BUDDHA: VMT. The IA needs to urgently equip itself with motorised howitzers, tracked self-propelled howitzers, self-prolelled tank trawls, and tank-support vehicles so as to ensure high degree of battlefield mobility that will give the IA the decisive edge in manoeuvre warfare. In addition, the Army Aviation Corps desperately requires attack helicopters for immediate air-support. Such support can NEVER be provided by any air force since even back in 1971 airborne recce photos taken on a day used to reach the IA’s ground formations only 2 days later!

To RAJESH MISHRA: Pappu’s troubles have just begun, especially after the Supreme Court in future will state that there was no wrongdoing in the decision-making process WRT the Rafale procurement. What I had tried to explain in the previous thread was how exactly the Pappu’s late father had not only castrated HAL in the 1980s, but had also totally screwed up the LCA’s development process. I’m sure such factoids can be employed to counter-attack the INC in detail.

To ARUN< If Pakistan can sacrifice thousands of soldiers, then why the hell did the PA announce a unilateral ceasefire across the LoC & WB back in November 2003? And does the PA continue to ask for the formalization of the ceasefire?

To RAD: The IA already has NTW-20 sniper rifles since 2008 & now its OFB clone called Vidhwansak is in series production.

To ENIGMA: If the high-intensity limited war is confined to only the LoC, then this effort can easily be wrapped up in 14 days. But the IA will be reqd to re-deploy at least 3 Mountain Divisions from the east to the west.

To RAD: Akash-NG will have a passive semi-active RF seeker but it will also have a IIR seeker, i.e. dual-mode guidance. Astra QR-SAM’s range is 22km.

    1. You mentioned ISTAR vehicles, MBT, FSCV, Mortars, ICV and APC as components of an ICV. But there was no mention about Artillery , Air Defence and Airborne systems ( attack and transport helos , UAVs) . How are these systems works in IBGs ? Kindly mention numbers of each systems in an IBG.
    2. IBGs as mentioned in the thread was mainly pakistan centric. What will be the ideal composition of IBGs against china keeping in mind different geography, different enemy , different level of preparedness and tactics ?

    What's your opinion on this

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/to-mark-end-of-world-war-i-frances-macron-denounces-nationalism-as-a-betrayal-of-patriotism/2018/11/11/aab65aa4-e1ec-11e8-ba30-a7ded04d8fac_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.7ab4f590ef22

In my opinion, this is a disgrace that a national leader(in name it is nationalism) of France forgetting their legacies and a disgrace toward there national identity.

I don't think France or Europe able to survive much if they remain in this course. After all, nationalism built nations, not patriotism.

Patriotism even existed in Roman Empire, whoever offered his allegiance toward Ceaser, was a patriot.

Chanakya was a patriot toward his King Chandragupta Maurya, he wrote a whole book to ultimately protect monarch, not the state.

If Chanakya accepted the idea of nations, then he had shown his allegiance toward the state, and state as supreme, not any king or queen.

The idea of nationalism itself makes the institutions supreme, not any men or women. This itself bring stability in the state, politically, socially and economically.

A nationalist never accept a monarch, but a patriot always does.

" An industry source familiar with the project noted that, while the IN would have preferred a common design, GRSE with its large in-house design team is ‘reluctant’ to do so and is pushing ahead with its own variant. "

Is this right? Is IN going to go with two different designs for the Shallow-Water ASW Corvette? And just to please GRSE? Both the shipyards competing with each's own design (in-house or otherwise) and the winning design being built by both shipyards would have been ideal in my opinion.

Would love to hear your views. Thanks in advance!

    ReplyDelete
  48. To AMIT BISWAS: Nirbhay’s homegrown turbofan was already flight-tested the last time & is now being further refined for the next round of flight-tests. After those ground-launched tests, the flight-tests of the air-launched variant will commence. The PAF too is suffering from depleting combat aircraft assets & therefore it will not be able to stand a chance against the IAF. Even back in 1971 the PAF stopped being an effective fighting force after December 7. Since tgen both the PA & PAF have been traumatized & are psychologically unable to engage in frontal war with either the IA or IAF.

To PV: It has since become evident that no SSK can launch SLBMs or even vertically-launched cruise missiles while staying submerged & this is because the sheer weight of the SLBMs that have to be compensated for after their ejection from their silos. In SSKs this translates into the reqmt for greater quantum of pumps & piping & additional electrical power reqd for quickly restoring the buoyancy-levels of the submerged SSK. Hence, the laws of physics dictate that no submerged SSK will be able to launch such SLBMs & SLCMs from vertical silos. The same problem exists for SSGNs that cannot launch SLBMs & their SLCM launchers too have to be either inclined, or the SLCM will have to be tube-launched. That’s why neither the Type 032 Qing-class or the Type 877EKM SSKs have to date been able to even test-fire vertically-launched SLBMs or cruise missiles like BrahMos-1. Even the INS Arihant will not be able to accommodate more than 4 K-4 SLBMs since the internal electric al power generators, pumps & piping can provide platform buoyancy optimization only for the weight of 4 K-4-type SLVMs or eight K-15-type SLBMs. It is therefore laughable when certain ‘desi’ journalists write fairy tales about the S-4+ SSBN with an additional plug for accommodating more SLBMs, since such folks haven’t even bothered to seek a second-opinion from marine architects about the additional weight/volume reqmts for pumps & piping & electrical power that such a plug will generate. In other words, lack of respect for the laws of physics only helps generate fairy tales, & not factoids.

To SANDY: This scenario arises only when the fleet is unbalanced in terms of firepower. For instance, a detailed study by Japan’s MSDF in the early 1970s had revealed that to detect & defeat one SSN or even an SSK, the ASW forces reqd will be eight FFGs or eight DDGs plus six shipborne ASW helicopters. This & this alone will deter an enemy submarine from entering the zone where wire-guided HWTs will be lethal. In case of the IN it is evident that there’s a severe dearth of deployable shipborne ASW helicopters & therefore RBU-6000 mortars are reqd for being fired against inbound wire-guided HWTs.

To UJJWAL & ENIGMA: Will dwell at length on those issues in another thread next month that will also contain revealing data on how the AirLand campaign in the western front was sub-optimally planned & conducted in 1971, about which no one has come out openly largely due to the euphoria over the end of East Pakistan & the creation of Bangladesh.

    ReplyDelete
  49. To ARPIT KANODIA: Nationalism as conventionally defined deals with competitive benchmarking that emphasizes once’s own moral/ethnic/communal superiority over another. Now that works very well when indigenous people are ruled by foreign occupiers. So it was perfectly right for de Gaulle to be a nationalist when France was under German occupation, but when de Gaulle had to consider France’s future options for Algeria, he had to become a patriot by ensuring France’s future financial stability & world status & this then led him to allow Algeria to become independent. Hence, the essential difference is that while one can be a proud patriot, when it comes to nationalism one often degenerates into a zenophobic nationalist. This can be seen nowadays in India where different sects, cults & classes are pitted against one another due to what I call competitive cultural nationalism. In India’s case, therefore, cultural nationalism will never be a unifying factor & instead it will be extremely devisive.

To UNKNOWN: France won’t have to produce brand-new Mirage 2000s. Instead, it can zero-life existing Mirage 2000 airframes like what is being done for the IAF, & install new turbofans & avionics to make them versatile MRCAs. IAI of Israel has been doing the Very same for years now by upgrading older Kfir C-2s to C-7 standard.

To ASD: ADA is the principal design authority & developer & systems integrator of LCA-AF Mk.2, while HAL is the prime industrial contractor.

BTW, I’ve also uploaded above the MoD’s reply to the Rafale-related petition. And here’s the full video of the Dassault Aviation CEO’s interview:

  53. Sorry I am confused Prasun: you said war is fast approaching whether India likes it or not. You said before, a short intense war is what can be expected, not lasting beyond 14 days because that is when it will get international pressure and intervention. Then you said IA is infantry heavy and a short intense war is won by an army high in mobility and highly mechanised. Then in response to a question above you said India can win if it lasts 1-3 months. Collating all that information does this mean a war will be imposed on India but India does not have the capability to restrict it to 14 days because of an absence of mechanized, mobile armed force and therefore this might drag on for up to 3 months to get any results.
If this were the case, then what of international pressure and intervention? Does this mean another meaningless waste of resources because nothing will be achieved except loss of lives and ego bashing?
I have a feeling this is Chinese Master Plan to take away any gains India has made economically and internationally through a useless war. The war will be more beneficial to Pakistan and China than India because the US and Russia both will have to take a step back, ISI can mobilise more Kashmiris and create even more upheaval, Indian population will feel let down, financially it will be draining as any war will interrupt foreign investments and foreign exchange reserves; slow down development and growth due to diversion of resources and China will threaten to open up a second front which India will never be able to afford regardless of how much vaunting.

What are your suggestions with regards to obtaining such urgently needed equipment - BMP is just too outdated; K-9 is not yet ready in numbers, Dhanush and ATAGS still not in full scale production on war footing, T-90S lags behind in ptoW ratio - so where would these stuff come from?

  55. To PV: LoLz! That protrusion is meant for housing the thin-line towed-array sonar suite/winch, and not any SLBM vertical-launch cell. The thin-line towed-array suite was developed by a Sichuan-based company that I had visited sometime in the previous decade. In fact, the PN had as far back as 2008 had shown scale-models of its Agosta-90B SSKs fitted with such a thin-line towed-array sonar suite. The IN in comparison has yet to procure even a single thin-line towed-array sonar for any of its SSKs or SSBNs as yet, although the reqmt has existed since 2004. I’m also highly surprised that the Scorpene SSKs don’t possess such a suite as well.

To MOHAN: Yes, very much so, since its hull design is optimized for the SSGN role. Acoustic signature of IN’s SSKs & SSBNs are way much lesser than those of PLAN submarines. And that’s exactly why the PLAN prefers to use the ‘Bastion’ concept for its SSBNs that call for the SSBNs to operate safely from friendly/territorial waters. Till to date, no PLAN SSBN has ever ventured out of China’s territorial waters on operational patrols. Only the SSNs have & they have been continuously tracked & monitored by the navies of the US, UK, France & India.

To INDIRAN: Rest assured that no HDW-built Dolphin-class SSK was ever fitted with any launcher for firing SLBMs. But yes, these SSKs have 650mm torpedo tubes for launching SLCMs like the turbo-Popeye & turbo-Delilah. Also, SLCMs can be armed only with tactical nuclear warheads or low-yield fission devices at best.

To PIERRE ZORIN: It will all become crystal-clear to you in the thread that will appear next month that analyses the 1971 India-Pak war. The war in northern J & K in 1999 was a limited war but it lasted for close to 3 months. Since there will never be an all-out conventional war between India & Pakistan in future, it means the entire IB will be silent (since both countries possess nuclear weapons to be used in self-defence inside their own respective territories)while only the areas around the WB & LoC will see active hostilities since limited wars by ‘responsible nuclear weapons states’ can be fought only over & within disputed territories. Consequently, the IN should have re-invented itself way back in the previous decade to become far more land-mobile & manoeuvrable by equipping itself with wheeled & tracked armoured vehicles & field howitzers & attack helicopters. Today instead the IA has only MBTs & ICVs, but no APCs! Did you notice that?

  56. To GESSLER: LoLz! That artist’s impression of the GRSE design was shown as a poster during the DEFEXPO 2018 expo. The plain truth is that Rick Sandwick is the designer of the SW-ASW craft (as shown in mu DEFEXPO 2018 thread) & not GRSE or CSL. Nor is the In so stupid so as to mess things up by opting for two competing designs. The Caucasians who visit such expos don’t bother to visit all the exhibitor booths & hence end up becoming totally confused. What they should have done was to reproduce the CSL’s artist’s conception of the SW-ASW craft as well in order to prove their point, but they haven’t. Anyway, to hell with such fake news, & instead here’s something very interesting:

great that the the akash will have a dual mode seeker ! for once somebody had the brains to think right .

But i dont understand why we are still sticking onto the ramjet propulsion system when the world over no one makes ramjet powered sams? it is also costlier and time consuming to make? .
the ntw-20 is an anti material rifle and does not have the sub moa precision that a dedicated .338 sniper rifle has , it is useless against personnel unless used with the 20mm round which has explosives as well. How are we using it . ?There seem to be no reports of our snipers taking out pakis as they do to us , i am worried.

why cant we make our own sabre PLB as it is open for anyone having the same system to jam or monitor intimes of war ?
I hear Israel makes great ones?

now coming to the arihant .now i believe it seems to be dual role boomer ie sub launched missiles as well as attack ,how= does that work out?

Does it have a flank array like t he scorpene and does it have sensors sensitive enough as the ones on the scorpenes? are there any foreign sensors ? will they be allowed to be on board the nukes given the sensitivity of European nations?

you mentioned about the zero lifing of Mirage -2000s, will france be ok to do that and sell us will it be cost effective?
what stops nations friendly to Pa to do the sam e like turkey, jordan and other middle east nations who fly the f-16?

the qing class subs seem to be built for china requirement to contain India with a ballistic missile launch capability . how will they be employed? and where ?will htey venture out into the arabian sea and bay of bengal due to the big AIP system on board? not withstanding the better ASW forces we have ?

  58. Dear Prasun,

What are the India specific additions in the Rafales which would be supplied to India. Will these be exclusively for India?

Today even the vice chief and some Air Marshals have to appear in Supreme Court for explanations to the CJI.

Has the IN settled with SUT HWT for Kalvari class finally or are they exploring some other options.

What is the IR missile chosen for Tejas? Last heard there were integration problems with Python missile.

1)What do you make of the SC proceedings today?

    2) What weapons will the SW-ASW craft and the NG missile craft have? Any SAMs?

    3) The New OPVs for which a RFP was floated include the requirement for modular mine warfare gear - is this modular mine detection equipment as fitted to the Car Nicobar class?

    Thanks again

I also feel sad that indian govt have no knowledge of psychological warfare..pappu is using the concept of "tell a lie thousand 1000 times nd it becomes truth" ..i think someone should hv filed pil against these three idiots and pappu for sabotaging..any family of airforce pilot killed should hv come nd file a pil against these idiots for sabotaging new aircraft forcing young pilots to fly older jets thus engendering their life..but it seems govt.is completely clueless about psychology nd pretty much it is now in defensive mood

  63. To PIERRE ZORIN: Any military that wants to wage high-intensity conventional war in a defined & short timeframe has to be highly mobile, must be able to operate in 3 dimensions & must have superior & overwhelming firepower. Having adequate stockpiles of weapons does not mean the kind of weapons reqd for waging short high-intensity wars for available as well. So let’s see what emerges later today at this seminar:

    https://cenjows.gov.in/eventsnew-detail?id=78#

To RAD: The Akash-1 with ramjets is optimum as a quick-reaction SHORADS over the plains & hence a dual-mode seeker enables the SAM to home in even in the midst of a severe EW environment. Sniping along the LoC & WB is not over long distances, but only a few hundred metres apart, about 600 metres at best. The NTW-20 comes with 2 barrel-types: 13.5mm & 20mm. Why should the IA resort to sniping against individuals when it is targetting administration bases that cause casualties to tens of PA personnel at a time? Even Israel imports PLBs. SSBN-80/INS Arihant’s hull design is optimized for the SSGN role & hence it can very well act as a hunter-killer submarine. This is what is inside that SSBN:

    https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7VkOzsBJmwQ/Vv8HxC2129I/AAAAAAAAKfw/_yr4UfCB7XMuA-3lsntIGGqVzRVsG6W2g/s1600/BEL-built%2Bsonars%2Bfor%2BSSKs.jpg

IAF Mirage 2000s & MiG-29Bs are being zero-lifed as part of their mid-life upgrades. PAF F-16s can be zero-lifed only in terms of airframe, not engines since the US will not supply new-build engines for them. PN’s Type 032 Qing-class SSKs will be operating only in the Arabian Sea.

To VED: Those are all mentioned in an earlier thread dealing with Rafale costings. Senior IAF officers appearing in court to depose is a good thing, not bad, because the contract negotiations committee for Rafale was led by the IAF & not any civilian bureaucrat. The HWT for Scorpene SSKs will be a new-generation one, not the old SUT. No SRAAM has been selected as yet for the Tejas Mk.1A.

    ReplyDelete
  64. To SBM: VMT. 1) Senior IAF officers appearing in court to depose is a good thing, not bad, because the contract negotiations committee for Rafale was led by the IAF & not any civilian bureaucrat. At least now the whole country will get to know at last that none of the combat aircraft licence-built by HAL to date was covered by their OEMs’ performance guarantees, i.e. the OEMs were not responsible for any product liability, which means every time any HAL-built aircraft of foreign design crashes, the OEM is not reqd to contribute in any measure to the IAF-constituted Board of Enquiry for determining the probable cause of the fatal air crashes or in-flight failures. This bitter truth had been kept a TOP SECRET by all successive govts of India since the 1950s & that’s precisely why the IAF has to date never released even a single report of Boards of Enquiry into fatal crashes. But now that it is time for this bitter truth to come into the open domain & that too officially, it will henceforth open a pandora’s box that will enable the widows of all those IAF pilots who have so far perished in such air crashes to sue the MoD & HAL for healthy financial compensation. So, let us all now brace for impact, for the mayhem will begin very soon. And the tables will now turn against the likes of Shourie & Sinha, who were complicit in suppressing such truiths while they were in office as Ministers!!!

    2) HWT & depth charges. SHORADS will be used for air-defence. 3) Modular gear means the winch, lowering crane plus the mine-disposal & sidescan sonar-equipped ROV.

To PRRANSHU YADAV: No, they are meant for persistent ISR only over a finite target area of only tens of sq km. They are not meant for wide area surveillance over either land or sea.

To AMIT BISWAS: The CJI is not to be blamed. The ones to be blamed are successive govts who have always raised defence-related issues in Parliament only for scoring points over one another through allegations of corruption, instead of discussing & explaining matters related to national security. At least during the 1950s & 1960s national security matters were openly discussed at great length, but not since Indira Gandhi became the PM. And this present-day govt too has miserably failed to reverse the trend. Consequently, those who ASSUME that they are blessed with all-knowing wisdom are now at the receiving end. And I’m loving every bit of it.

    ReplyDelete
  65. To ANUP: They will stop the day there’s not a single fatality due to an automobile accident on the streets of India. T-45 Goshawk is not certified to land & take off from STOBAR-equipped aircraft carriers. Even if the Goshawk can land on INS Vikramaditya, how will it take off? Will you be available for always standing on the edge of the ski-ramp to deliver the extra level of thrust reqd for the T-45 to take off?

To UNKNOWN: LoLz! At a time when even the Govt of India in a reply to an RTI application has admitted that it has no definition for the words Hindu or Hinduism, you are still clinging to the colonial British-invented constructs like HINDU. Any kind of competitive benchmarking (which is what nationalism is all about) in an independent country is counter-productive & regressive & leads to faultlines like the North-South Divide, i.e. one worships Ram while the other worships Ravana & both parties are at constant loggerheads. Therefore, in any independent country there’s no room at all for nationalism, but only for proud patriotism. Nationalism is reqd only by those who feel persecuted & who are indeed facing persecution.

To SUJIT: Tejas Mk.1A’s airframe configuration is still under review & has not yet been finalised. Rest assured that the Supreme Court will take an enlightened & precedent-setting final call.

To PRATAP: The IA did the same 2 weeks ago when an administrative base of the PA in PoK was struck.

And what goes around, comes around, as exemplified by this:

    AJ

    ReplyDelete
  67. To AJ: What it means is "one reaps only what one sows".

To AMIT BISWAS: In a way, if the Supreme Court's sitting judges & the CJI are clever, then they should:

    1) Ask A K Antony to appear to depose & ask him why the hell did the MoD insist on licence-building 4+ Gen MMRCAs when no one else in the world has even tried to do so?

    2) Ask this MoD why it can't accept the fact that a three-engined VVIP helicopter will UNDENIABLY be superior to any competing twin-engined VVIP helicopter because the laws of physics dictate that a three-engined helicopter will always outperform a twin-engined helicopter due to the former's superior MTOW capability, superior survivability characterists & superior hot-n-high performance parameters.

If the Supreme Court asks these 2 questions, believe me both the Rafale & AW-101 VVIP helicopter deals will be saved, with the only downside being that both the INC & BJP will then be forced to eat shit by admitting they they both were politiking with vital national security matters, instead of both their stated self-righteous claims of being crusaders against corruption.

If this is done, then by the end of this week the petitions & all other on-going bogus CBI investigations into the AW-101 deal will be junked/terminated/dismissed, thereby saving the Indian taxpayers' money. But of course all this throw the 'desi bandalbaazes' out of business overnight since they don;t even know the meaning of sovereign guarantees & what they are meant for. In reality, in military contracts, there are only performance guarantees by the OEM & no one gives any sovereign guarantees because such guarantees are always preceded & overruled by internationally binding covenants, such as UNSC resolutions.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Prasunda,

The way the case has gone so far, and the way the CJI dismissed the senior IAF officers who had come to depose after just a few questions, it appears that the SC would order a SIT into the Rafale deal as demanded by Prashant Bhushan, Pappu and co. Could this not be politically motivated, with the INC using its deep roots in the establishment to establish a scam where there is none ?

  69. Hi Prasun,

If you had seen ndtv, one will get a feeling that Rafale deal is about to be scrapped.

Don't you think what court did today was overstepping it's jurisdiction?

And why is Ajai Shukla campaigning against this deal. Seems politically motivated or something.

And what will happen if Rafale deal is scrapped. Wont we be a bigger laughing stock. I mean our polity and courts have proven that they can do pretty absurd things.

    Srinivasa Nanduri

    ReplyDelete
  70. To SATYAKI: Not at all. Because the line of questioning seems to indicate that the Supreme Court will likely order drastic reforms for the functioning of the MoD, so that dilli-dallying of the type exhibited by the UPA-1/2 govts will henceforth become a thing of the past. At the same time, severe strictures are likely to be passed against the UPA-1/2 govts. For the INC, the deal they have offered is simple: stop attacking us on the AW-101 deal & we will reciprocate with the Rafale deal. This is what it was always all about.

To SRINIVASA NANDURI: You must be referring to these:

    1) K-118 has displacement increased to 4000 tons and was outfitted with 6 launchers to carry out tests of the R-29 (SS-N-8) intercontinental range SLBM. Each R-29 weighs about 33 tons and is liquid fuelled.

    2) K-153 was outfitted with a single launcher to carry out tests of the R-39 (SS-N-20) solid fuelled SLBM. The R-39 weighs about 84 tons.

And why has Russia till this day not modified any Type 877EKM or Type 636 SSK to accommodate VLS cells for launching missiles like the Yakhont or BrahMos-1? Obviously because such options are brainless. Perhaps that's why only Indian companies like BrahMos Aerospace continue to display scale-models of such modifications. After all, most Indians are taught since childhood that they should always continue to argue that 2 + 2 either equals 3 or 5, & so they must never admit that the answer is 4.

To MOHAN: No to both questions. Akash-NG is designed to be used by the very same TELs that are now in use for Akash-1.

  77. To UNKNOWN: Here's more hogwash:

Claim: In G-to-G contracts, “the responsibility for the supply of equipment and related industrial services and performance of the entire contract remains with the foreign government”. The second condition cited by the law ministry was that “the dispute resolution mechanism remained at Government-to-Government level only”.
    https://thewire.in/government/india-france-rafale-fighter-jets-deal

Reality: That only applies to OEM companies that are state-owned, like Russian OEMs. Even in the case of FMS contracts inked with US-based OEMs, there are no sovereign guarantees, since the US-based OEMs, just like Dassault Aviation, are private-sector companies.

Claim: Asserting that not a single aircraft was delivered till now even after three-and-a-half years, Bhushan told the Supreme Court bench that if the 126 aircraft deal was still on, “at least 18 jets would have been delivered by April 2019”.

Reality: The contract was inked in September 2016 & the contract states that first deliveries will take place within 36 months after contract signature. There are still 9 months left. If this is the quality of argument of the PIL petitioners, then this hearing is definitely an utter waste of the Indian taxpayers' money & time.

  79. To AMIT BISWAS: Sovereign guarantees are NEVER given by anybody for the simple reason (that I had explained yesterday) they can be overruled anytime by binding UNSC resolutions that call for imposing sanctions or embargoes. Even in the case of sanctions/embargoes imposed by individual countries, the Comfort Letter suffices as was the case between France & Russia when the latter’s invasion of Ukraine in April 2014 caused France to cancel the order for Mistral-class LPDs to Russia. By that time 2 of these LPDs were ready for delivery, but France bilaterally negotiated with Russia for paying back Russia a mutually agreeable sum of money that satisfied Moscow, & France in turn recovered its investments by selling those 2 Mistral-class LPDs to Egypt at a later date. Of course, all these details will be totally out of bounds for the ‘desi patrakaars’ who are loathe to do their homework & that’s precisely the reason why those 2 news anchors of NDTV’s English & Hindi channels went overboard the day-before-yesterday & were crackling like headless chicken.

As for the rest, no further updates are available than what was stated by me the previous time on such topics.

To UNKNOWN/BUDDHA: Pakistan Air Force has become the target of a new cyber-attack rife with malware, allegedly at the behest of a “state-sponsored actor” in the Middle East region, reported Dark Reading, a cyber-security news site. The attack the author says has repercussions for governments and organisations even beyond Pakistan’s borders but is also being directly directed at Pakistan’s military. This developing theory, an act of espionage, has been identified and named ‘Operation Shaheen’ by researchers from Cylance, a software company based in the US that claims that this is a year-long ongoing campaign against the country. Shaheen is a species of the falcon birds which Pakistan Air Force uses it as its symbol. According to Kevin Livelli, director of threat intelligence at Cylance and a co-author of three integrated comprehensive reports on the operation, Shaheen is often cited in fraudulent emails that are used for launching the attacks. The company has named the threat actor as “White Company,” which uses obscure methods to conceal the presence of the malware embedded.

Are the reports that the lca-1a will be more expensive than the su-30 justified if at all its true? what is the correct fact ? Does it include weapons and spare parts and maintenance etc ?
you mentioned that the LCA mk1A airframe is not still under review ? whar are they going to change in the air frame apart from adding the refueling probe ?

Is the LCA mk2 undergoing wind tunnel testing? or they have not started yet?

As it is the su-30 is more expensive than the bought out ones so what gives?

its reassuring to note that US will not relife the engines of PAF when bought out side but turkey might do it on the sly given the idiot erdogans policy. Is US committed to maintain the f-16 currently with PAF?

will US allow the induction of the s-400 system to turkey ?It will be the end of the f-35 advantage !! How can US antagonize saudi , turkey and India??

Now there is disturbing news that the f-17 will be getting a aesa radar, and along will come long range missiles and better IIR missiles , that will take away the advantage of the Indian LCA . How do cope with that??

It was disappointing to note that the arihant had no towed array and a flank array sonar ,is there any reason ? Idont find any real problem as we have sort of been self reliant on sonar tech? will they be added later? we can also take a peek at the scorpene sonar and its performance and design some thing like it? shouldnt be a problem as atlas has agreed to transfer tech on the towed array sonar, so why not get flank array tech from france or germany?I feel our Arihant will be vulnerable without these two sonars?

The French , god knows why, restricted themselves to use LEU , even when whole world moving toward HEU. And French not even restricted themselves to lower end of HEU like somewhat 40-60% enriched uranium.

But they idiotically restricted themselves to reactor grade LEU of 10-20% enriched uranium.

Now this leads to larger reactor to generate more power, and this also create problem in achieving higher efficiency and increasing intervals between refuelling.

Because of such problem, the ship which laid down in 2007 unable to launch even in year 2018.

And then the reactor which meant to go in Barracuda not even achieved criticality even in ground version.

I think even we can't match this fuck up of being morally right and restricting strategic forces to only use LEU. When all laws of physics point out to use some kind of HEU in marine reactors .

  103. To DASHU: Standing on one’s feet is a good habit only if one knows fully well what lies beneath the feet. While it is debatable whether or not India’s netas have grasped this fact-of-life, it is certainly the case with POTUS Trump. For, what he has been doing is systematically peeling off an onion called Pakistan & thoroughly exposing the self-righteous narrative of Pakistan that no one else in the world buys. For instance, this very Imran Ahmed Niazi Khan who boldly claims that Pakistan is the world’s second Riyaasat-e-Medina (after the first that was established by the Holy Prophet), is constantly demonizing his own country’s political opposition—something that the Holy Prophet would never have done. Secondly, while he stoutly opposed the US-conducted drone attacks against Pakhtoons living in KPK & FATA, not once did he espouse the cause of mainstreaming the residents of FATA, who till last May were stateless & had no legal cover. So much for being ‘Islamic’. POTUS Trump has already figured out the Pakistani leadership elite’s mindset & is therefore ratcheting up tensions in a calibrated & sequential manner. For instance, after one of his provocative tweets or statements, the Pakistanis will react similarly. POTUS will then begin a trade war with Pakistan by withdrawing all preferential trade concessions. He also has the option of stopping the product-support of all US-supplied weapons to Pakistan. In addition, he can also declare through the US Federal Treasury that all US$ funds transferred to Pakistan by any country will henceforth be illegal US currency, thereby becoming worthless. If Pakistan retaliates by denying the US access to its airspace & land transit routes to Afghanistan, then the US will be free to declare along with India, the UK & France a no-fly zone for all Pakistani military aircraft over selected airspace corridors in order to provide unhindered aerial logistics support to the ISAF forces in Afghanistan. So what can Pakistan do? Create a grouping of China, Pakistan, Iran & Turkey as an act of strategic defiance? Well, Saudi Arabia for sure will not take this kindly/lightly. So will Pakistan then fall back to the doctrine of strategic defiance formulated in 1990 by myth-makers like Gen Mirza Aslam Beg under which any attack on Pakistan by anyone will result in Pakistan attacking Israel? Hence, let us not counting the chickens until they’re hatched & instead see how things play out in the next few weeks.

And BTW, here’s the ultimate irony: Imrean Ahmed Khan Niazi’s sister Alima Khan has sold her Dubai-based property & has just used that money to buy some real estate in the US:

While I agree with your aforementioned assessment of the recent spat between IK and Pres Trump, I really doub't China will let the matters escalate to such levels considering the time, money and effort by it to prop up Pak. At some point China will come out of their Century of Peace mode, which has helped it grow enormously, and take action reflective of thier ambition and what you've just said will give them that oportunity. In addition, he has stated that civilization began only with the Riyaasat-e-Medina & prior to that the law of the jungle had prevailed & there was no civilisational or civilised existence. And now, after spreading all such bullshit, he wants to introduce an international covenant that bars everyone from criticizing either Islam or the Holy Prophet! The question that the Govt of India needs to answer is that have all the seized M-4 carbines seized from the terrorists been traced to their original sources, i.e. where such carbines supplied to the PA or were they stolen from NATO stocks in Afghanistan.

To KAPIL: Did you know that Kartarpur Sahib was captured by the IA in December 1971 during the assault into the Shakargarh Bulge by the IA’s I Corps & was given back after the war because both countries decided to hold on to one another’s captured territory only along the LoC & return all captured territories along the IB? This is the kind of mistakes that the Indian political leadership made at that time, but all such factoids are now brushed under the carpet because of the euphoria over the loss of East Pakistan, and personality cults are created instead to revel in false glories!

After all US also chose 747-8 as future Air Force One. Although I know many countries use twin engined planes for VIP transport and mordern engines are so reliable that the actual chance of a crash is negligible even for a twin engine plane. A recent audit by the NSG of the preparedness of these specialised units in dealing with such attacks has found that seven states (Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka) are ready, while almost all others are not (the NSG has ranked their preparedness “average” or “below average”).

And finally, the entire ‘desi’ media is now the subject of ridicule due to this, which I had red-flagged the last time:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPmu0X3qe4Q

The indifferent & clueless netas (then led by Indira Gandhi) were the ones responsible for NOT issuing proper guidelines for the war-plans of 1971 to the IA’s HQs Western & Southern Command . As a result, the IA was allowed to needlessly go on the offensive in the Shakargarh Bulge while totally ignoring the capture of Kartarpur Sahib within the Bulge (just because Zafarwal to the north of Kartarpur Sahib was the desired target). Similarly, HQ Southern Command’s 11 Division ought to have been tasked to secure Umarkot Town at all costs. None of this was done. Instead, after capturing Chicken’s Neck in 48 hours, 10 Division of the IA was not reinforced by the now-free 26 Division, thereby preventing a strong counter-attack by the IA & IAF in the Chhamb Sector. And since the PA had dug in with both armour & multiple minefields throughout the interior of the Shakargrh Bulge, what followed was a needless slugfest between opposing armoured forces & that too between formations that did not include even the feared armoured Divisions of either the IA or the PA. So, the strategic reserves of both armies remained uncommitted to battle throughout the war!!! Only later did it emerge that the PA & PAF were aiming to fight a 6 month-long military campaign because they lacked the superiority reqd for winning a short war campaign (thanks to the US military embargo imposed on Pakistan at that time). And finally the icing on the cake came during the Simla negotiations when a select coterie of civil servants dominated by Kashmiris screwed up everything. More about all this next month when I will upload scanned literature that dissects the 1971 war on the western front & how grave the mis-calculations were at the politico-military level.

The SH15 uses 6x6 wheeled Shaanxi truck chassis with an armored cabin at the front and one 155 mm gun-howitzer mounted at the rear of the truck. These new howitzer is protected against firing of small arms and artillery shell splinters. The crew cab has two large bulletproof windows at the front and there are two doors on each side. According to NORINCO, this artillery system is based on the AH-2 155 mm/L52 howitzer which is able to fire all standard 155 mm NATO ammunition, as well as Chinese-made ammunition developed by NORINCO. The 155mm howitzer mounted at the rear of the SH15 uses a semi-automatic loading system. The 155 mm 52 caliber ordnance is fitted with a double baffle muzzle brake and when travelling the ordnance is held in position by a clamp, located to the immediate rear of the cab, which is operated by remote control. When the SH15 is deployed in the firing position two large spades are lowered at the rear to provide a more stable firing platform. The SH15 has a maximum firing range of 20 km with standard ammunition and 53 km with 53 km with a rocket-assisted artillery projectile. This artillery vehicle can be operated by a crew of five. According to some military sources, the vehicle will have a maximum weight of 22 tons. The SH15 has a maximum rate of around 4-6 rounds per minute. On each side of the truck chassis, there are storage boxes to carried charges and ammunition. Elevation and traverse is hydraulic with manual controls being provided as a back-up. The SH15 can be used to perform indirect and direct firing.

The economic and energy security benefits of a Beijing-funded investment scheme in Pakistan have been overestimated, and China’s lack of transparency about the scheme has raised tensions with India, a leading geopolitical scholar in China warned.

“Through widespread publicity, the [Chinese] public and media have touted it as a big achievement, but I think the negative impacts of the corridor have been ignored,” he said at a seminar in Beijing.“And the massive coverage of the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ by domestic media, and some irresponsible remarks by scholars have created suspicion [about Beijing’s strategic intentions] in India,” he said in an assessment of the plan’s first five years.“Under what circumstances would the US blockade the South China Sea? Only if China and the US were at war,” Yang said. “But even if the US didn’t do that, it could still blockade shipping lanes in the Indian Ocean.”“If you take all the spending into consideration, the cost of the pipeline projects would be dangerously high,” he said. “Based on experience [of similar projects around the world], once a pipeline extends beyond 4,000km [2,500 miles] the cost of using it to transport energy is higher than doing so by sea, so the [economic] benefit of Gwadar Port doesn’t exist.”Yang said that in the absence of a proper explanation of Beijing’s plan, and the exaggerated claims made by optimists and propagandists, it was “reasonable” that New Delhi was sceptical about China’s intentions.

  128. To UNKNOWN/KUNAL: Are you SURE that the past wrongs can be corrected” If yes, then I don’t share such confidence due to the past methodologies adopted by successive Govts of India. For instance, the coastal surveillance system on India’s western seaboard should have been built immediately after the 1993 Mumbai blasts. But that did not happen. And now we have new revelations about the Govt of India ignoring vital & specific intelligence inputs prior to 26/11, in fact from 2006 onwards:

Enough indications were coming from 2006 that Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was preparing to strike Mumbai, most probably through the sea, that they were training a team for ocean crossing operations, and that it would be a commando-style attack against multiple targets. Only the date and time were not clear. A TV channel survey on July 30, 2006, after a published threat to our West Coast nuclear installations, had indicated that Mumbai was not ready to face an armed sea infiltration. On June 16, 2007, the same TV channel quoted Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, that eight LeT militants had infiltrated through the Mumbai sea coast. Three of them were arrested in Rajouri in March 2007. Strangely, they had adopted the same modus operandi as 26/11 terrorists with Hindu ID cards and transferred to an Indian boat after reaching Indian waters. All these could have been useful inputs as “open source intelligence” for security planning to strengthen our coastal security had we possessed a “bottom up” security architecture, where such trends are fed into the drafting boards.

To ENIGMA: Just how the hell can the CPEC ensure all-year connectivity between China & Pakistan when the Karakoram Highway itself stays closed due to inclement weather for up to 5 months a year? And now due to the on-going construction of 3 more dams inside PoK a firther long stretch of the KKH will become submerged.

To সুমন্ত নাগ: Clearly the PA is focusisng more on procuring high-mobility field artillery assets designed to be put to maximum use during short-duration limited high-intensity limited wars. Also, the PA now knows too well that its existing M198 & M109 howitzers of US origin may no longer be usable due to the probable stoppage of spares support in future. Hence the switch-over to China-origin military hardware for all 3 armed services ASAP.

To PRATAP: It is a land corridor that is totally fenced on both the Indian & Pakistani sides & the visa-free travel from India to Pakistan is of 24 hours duration only. Thus, there should be no fears of infiltration through any portion of the corridor. The idea of Khalistan remains alive for financial milking purposes only & that too in the UK, Germany, Canada & the US. In India’s heartland there are no takers for such outlandish concepts or ideals.

  133. To JASSS GILL: Why not, if the ‘enemy’ as envisaged by both participating armies is in fact waging terrorism through low-intensity conflicts?

To BRADSHAW: LoLz! You’ve lapped up everything that internet fanboys dole out through sheer ignorance! Surplus military hardware is ALWAYS in a decommissioned state, i.e. in an unserviceable state. To procure them & make them unserviceable is a no-brainer unless supported by the OEM. So, since this has been established, have you come across any report stating that BAE Systems of the US has decided to supply spares for such decommissioned M-109s? If not, then it can only mean that those ex-Italian M-109s were procured for cannibalisation just as surplus Mirage-3/5 aircraft were procured by the PAF throughout the 1990s for similar purposes. Therefore, it stands to reason that no new M-109 artillery regiments have been raised by the PA, nor will they ever be, rest assured. And finally, the number of ex-Italian M-109s procured was only 62 & not ‘hundreds’.

To SUJOY MAJUMDAR: What he is saying is that without a guaranteed level playing field, there cannot be any participation by the private sector for offering India-developed & India-specific solutions. And there cannot be a level playing field until the MoD’s Secretary for Defence Production remains a board-member of the board of directors of each & every DPSU in the country. Because, as a board-member, he/she is automatically obliged to favour the DPSU & failure to do so will result in him being dragged to the courts by the DPSUs for criminal breach of trust.

While this is the reality in which Hindus residing in Aurakzai Agency in KPK are regularly targetted as are the Shias in FATA:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6uEiuBFv-E

And yesterday, Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi omce again proved his country’s self-righteous approach towards India when on one hand he was advising others not to remain hostages of history, in the same breath he dug out the Kashmir issue from history, i.e. by saying that if India takes 1 step forward, then Pakistan will take 2 steps in return, he was saying that India should forget the history of the past & treat Pakistan as an equal to India. What he can’t figure out AS YET is that France & Germany could work together after WW-2 only because Germany had totally denounced & renounced its Nazi past, i.e. Germany was never made to forget its history, but to remember it forever. Likewise, unless Pakistan renounced & denounces its foundational two-nation ideology that is embedded within intolerant regiliosity & unless it apologises for all its war-crimes committed against India since 1947 & against Bangladesh between 1947 & 1971, Pakistan can never be treated as a normal state.

In fact, the real reasons for Pakistan making the recent peace overtures are only tactical in nature & are designed with 2 objectives in mind:

    1) to earn foreign exchange revenues to shore up its collapsing economy (which has been reduced to an agrarian one thanks to the China-Pakistan FTA struck in 2006 & due to unrelenting international pressure) & to postpone the entry into the black list of the FATF next month, as explained here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BL247VG_eI

    2) To lessen the ferocity of the IA along the LoC. This is because along the LoC the IA units that are the most ferocious against the PA are the Battalions manned by the Sikhs & Gurkhas. This is also the reason why Pakistan has for years asked Nepal to stop the flow of Gurkhas who seek entry into the IA.

  140. Hi,

Paks have over 700+ M109 in service. They have in-house capability to upgrade these. Many of the parts are not imported because no ones makes them anymore or has done so for decades. Hence they built up the capability during the 90's and why they continue to import M109 from all over the world.

Having said that they have been looking to upgrade and have been trialing the turkish version of the K-9, Denel T-5, SH1 from china and Nora from serbia. They rejected the turkish, SH1 before. It is said that this new gun was actually design ground up with PA specs. Wonder if they are looking to produce this at home?

  145. To RAD: There is no latest dope on the SANT PGM. The laws of physics dictate that is a PGM is wirelessly guided via TV or laser or IIR or even RF, then such data-links & sensors can be jammed. This applies even to supersonic PGMs. However, if PGMs are wire-guided, then the advantage is that they can never be jammed, but the downside is that such PGMs will have to be subsonic. Regarding HELINA, it has been successfully integrated on to the Rudra gunship & work is proceeding fast on achieving a similar feat with the LCH. Now, here’s some ‘DOPE on the IDEAS 2018 expo that was held in Karachi from November 27 till 30:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7B_6O9qclg
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hE59vSofDR8

And this is the press conference of Pak PM Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi with the visiting Indian media 48 hours ago that was not shown by any Indian TV channel:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28GNHBNFo0k

You will notice that Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi sounds pretty desperate on the economic front & therefore wants to earn some money from the global Sikh diaspora through religious tourism. But he failed to articulate exactly why the Kashmir issue is close to the hearts of every Pakistani, if we are to believe his claim. And the reason is Pakistan’s foundational ideology that is derived from deviant & distorted religiosity. While this fact-of-life has not yet been understood by India’s civilian ‘netas’, the IA’s COAS Gen Rawat clearly understands the reality & hence his befitting reply yesterday:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4kKaex_4UQ

And finally, the PA’s COAS yesterday visited the Sialkot Sector:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AC2xDip9Tys

So one can henceforth expect the WB to become hot & an increase in infiltrations into Jammu from the Chicken’s Neck area via underground tunnels.

But disaster may soon strike PoK, if we are to believe this:

And matters along the LAC will stay stable & relatively quiet, as evidenced by the all-smiles Chinese President yesterday:

  146. To SANDY: Exactly how can a competitive bidding process last for 8 years & end with an acceptable outcome? The MoD & IA HQ are to be blamed for this sordid state of affairs. Every such bidding process from the issuance of RFI to contract signature must not last for a period exceeding 24 months. If not, then such mishaps will continue to take place.

To PAWAN MEENA: Scientists NEVER create end-products. They only discover scientific breakthroughs that are next reqd to be applied by engineers on technological breakthroughs. DRDO possesses scientists only in its Life Sciences labs & all of them are micro-biologists. In all other labs, only engineers exist. And this trend is global, i.e. scientists are always attached to educatiional academies of excellence. And that’s why in India one tends to use the term ‘scientist’ in a very loose & derogatory manner. Elsewhere in the world, titles like ‘Academician’ are accorded to distinguished scientists, be they from Russia or China or Japan or the US. But never in India. Why? Because in India a scientist is not valued as a human resource.

Do you think Vajpayee Govt and successive Cong govt failed to take advantage of two front war with Pak during 2001-2010 when terrorism war was on its peak in Pak.

I see possibility of a.) Pak played India by offering peace as it could not fight a two front war or b.)US pressure on India to not escalate pressure on Pak?

It was a golden opportunity missed by India to attack pak during 2008 and grab a lot of land.

i was surprised when the news that japan was willing to buy 100 f 35 at 88 mill $ a piece! of course there is maintenance and ordnance aspect as well but it seems so cheap ?. Of course it does not have the load carrying capacity of a rafale but then we will get a tried and tested stealth fighter rather than a so called half baked lemon stealth PAKFA?
even if we take a comprehensive deal like the one for the rafale it may end up being cheaper than the rafale ? you r opinion?---- ajay shukla dint tell me this!!!

  153. Dear Sir,

I must apologise for the numbers. I seemed to have mixed up the number of M109's in their inventory.

Italy had a total of 220+ of M109s in their stock. There are numerous reports that Pak have already purchased around 121 of the stock, so far. The indications are they are looking to get the lot from them. Italy is trying sell state assets to raise money at the moment.

There are lots of M109s around europe, in stock. If they continue to get these for cheap and upgrade. It will be a pretty potent force on the cheap.

  154. Dear Prasun,

In your caption you write, "ALIT’s latest product is the M-20. Capable of striking targets between 70km and 270km, the all-weather capable M-20, with a Mach 3 cruise speed, comes armed with both a 200kg unitary high-explosive (HE) blast-fragmentation warhead for engaging high-value and time-sensitive targets, as well as a sub-kiloton yield tactical nuclear warhead."

I would much appreciate your expanding on this final point if possible. ALIT does not mention tac nuke warheads in their promotional literature, of course. For years Russian sources have mentioned that some PLA SRBMs have tac nuke warheads. But is there a Chinese source on current tac nuke warheads?

Many thanks for your reply as I also thank you for your insightful blog. RDF

    ReplyDelete
  155. To RDF: VMT, but ALIT is not authorised to deal with nuclear armed weapons. Both CASC & CASIC are the authorities when it comes to the development & marketing of nuclear WMDs. Nor does China publicly admit to such factsm but yes there is literature on this subject, though they can't be published in the open domain. Hence, proof of this will come only when China publicly shows off such capabilities during its annual parades or when it releases video footage of its Strategic Rocket Forces in which the ground-launched & air-launched versions of the M-20 are shown.
