Miscellaneous Year-End Jottings

The PLAAF presently has a weird three-stage flying training syllabus for its trainee pilots: use the Nanchang PT-6 piston-engined aircraft for the ab initio stage, followed by the Hongdu JL-8/K-8 primary turbofan-powered trainer for intermediate-level flying training, and culminating in lead-in fighter training with the Hongdu L-15. It now looks the PLAAF has at last decided to get rid of this obsolete practice by procuring basic turboprop trainers (BTT) and eventually decommissioning its PT-6s and JL-8s. To this end, the PLAAF is likely to procure the CETC Wuhu Diamond Aircraft Manufacture Co Ltd-produced TA-20 BTT, which in essence is a licence-built DART-450 (Diamond Aircraft Reconnaissance Trainer) that was developed by Austria-based Diamond Aircraft Industries.
The TA-20 is the world’s first all-carbon fibre, tandem twin-seat civil and military BTT and is powered by a single AI-450SD turboprop engine produced by Ukraine-based Ivchenko Progress/Motor Sich. The engine drives a five-bladed MT propeller and offers a maximum takeoff power of 495hp. The TA-20;s maiden flight took place on November 6, 2018 at Wuhu in Jiangsu province.
CETC Wuhu Diamond Aircraft Manufacture Co Ltd. was founded in 2013 and it presently builds the Diamond Pattern DA-42 and DV-20 under license. Its TA-20 BTT is equipped with the Smart-210 avionics system from Hermes-sys (Chengdu Hermes Technology Ltd). The Smart-210 suite complies with all international airworthiness standards.
Wu Jian Qi, the CETC Group’s Chief Engineer, confirmed at a recent presentation that a metric-wave radar detected and traced the route of a USAF F-22 Raptor at a distance of 450km in 2013, whereas none of the other PLAAF radars saw it. Presently a series of radar clusters each comprising a JY-26 UHF-band and SLC-7 L-band active phased-array radar, JY-27A Skywatch-5 VHF-band radar, and a YLC-8B UHF-band 3-D radar, are deployed throughout coastal China.
First Type 055 DDG of the PLA Navy Undergoing Sea Trials
Pakistan Navy’s CSTC-Developed Type 054AP F-22P Batch-2 FFG Design
The Pakistan Navy (PN) had on June 1, 2018 inked a contract with the state-owned China Shipbuilding Trading Company Ltd (CSTC) for procuring two additional 4,000-tonne guided-missile frigates (FFG) to add to the first two it had ordered exactly a year ago. All four FFGs will be delivered by mid-2021. Designed by the China International Shipbuilding Corp (CISC) Group’s 701 Institute, the FFGs will be built by the Shanghai-based Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding Co.
The 4,000-tonne FFG’s design is derived from that of the PLA Navy’s Type 054A FFG. It will have an endurance of 21 days, length of 135 metres, range of 4,000 nautical miles (when cruising at 18 Knots) and top speed of 26 Knots.
It will have 32 vertical-launch system (VLS) cells containing the LY-80N surface-to-air missiles (SAM), one 76mm HPJ-26 main naval gun, two 30mm HPJ-17 30mm Type 1130 close-in guns, a 24-cell FL-3000N point-defence missile system (PDMS), twin ET-52C triple-tube torpedo  launchers, one mast-mounted SR-2410C S-band active phased-array radar developed by the China Educational Instrument & Equipment Corp (CEIEC), twin six-barrel Type-87 240mm anti-submarine rocket launchers (with 36 rockets), twin Type 726-4 18-tube decoy rocket launchers, and eight inclined launchers housing the Harba anti-ship cruise missile variant of the Babur land-attack cruise missile (which itself is a China-developed clone of the Ukraine-developed Korshun cruise missile). All four FFGs will be optimised for anti-submarine fleet control missions. Each FFG will be powered by four SEMT Pielstick 16 PA6 STC diesel engines.
The SR-2410C radar can track up to 150 targets per rotation. Limitations include airborne targets cruising at speeds above Mach 3 and at ranges of more than 150km. The radar has a fire-control capability to track anti-ship cruise missiles, but only at a maximum range of 60km. It is also capable of tracking moving ground vehicles and surface ships. This radar has already been installed on the Bangladesh Navy’s first two Type 056 guided-missile corvettes—BNS Shongram and BNS Prottasha.
In another development, on April 23, 2018 the keel-laying ceremony of the first of two offshore patrol vessels (OPV-1900) being built for the PN was held at DAMEN Shipyard Galati in Romania. Pakistan and The Netherlands-based Damen had signed a contract for the construction of the two OPVs in June 2017. Each of the OPVs will have a displacement of around 1,900 tonnes, an overall length of 90 metres, 14.4-metre beamwidth, 50-man crew complement and 23 Knots speed. The vessels will be suited for anti-surface and anti-air operations, maritime security operations, day/night helicopter operations, combat search-and-rescue, surveillance, and intelligence-gathering.
Earlier, on March 10, 2018 the Pakistan Customs took delivery of two Damen Stan Patrol-1605 FRP patrol boats at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Ltd (KS & EW). Both vessels were built by KS & EW with technical and material support from Damen. The entire project took just eight months to reach fruition. The patrol boats shall be used for monitoring and enforcement activities in Pakistan’s territorial waters. KS & EW had received the order for the two vessels from the Pakistan Customs in July last year. The bid was supported by Damen's Technical Cooperation Programme (DTC), which cooperates with shipyards worldwide. Damen supplied prefabricated material kits along with the hulls to KS & EW. Knowledge transfer was also an integral part of the DTC programme, and for this project KS & EW production staff went to Damen Antalya for training on working with FRP materials by Damen’s trainers. Technicians from Damen Antalya also travelled to Karachi to transfer knowledge during the production and testing phases. KS & EW and Damen have a long history of working together. This has to date resulted in the delivery of four Damen Stan Tug-1605s for the PN and two more of the same type to the Karachi Port Trust, plus a Damen Multi-Cat-1908, for the Karachi Port Trust.

  1. To VISHAL: 1) You can just Google for them & they are fairly easy to find but they are all foreign publications. 2) Those were missiles that were not cannister-encased, like the Seawolf & Sea Dart & also Soviet-era SAMs & ASCMs. But all cannister-encased missiles have fins that are folded while inside the cannister & are automatically deployed through actuators when the missiles are fired. 3) They are only 60% accurate at best. 4) The US is not leaving Afghanistan, but is only reducing its boots-on-the-ground because it has already increased its airpower there. The Afghan Taliban will not be able to dominate in any battlefield & in fact Kabul has already sharpened its knives & the newly-appointed Interior & Defence Ministers there re all totally pro-India. 5) DRDO has never made any such claim, only some ill-informed ‘desi patrakaars’ have claimed. 6) There is no BrahMos-ER. 7) The Project 25A guided-missile corvettes.

To SUJOY MAJUMDAR: Anyone who wants to organise ‘Rath Yatras’ in any Indian state, not just in WB, should bear the mind the consequences that follow after such yatras, like what had happened in 1992 after the Babri Masjid demolition. While those morons & law-breakers from Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal ^ VHP always take pride in their senseless arsons, what they deliberately keep under wraps & shy away from is that more than 120 temples & churches were destroyed in Pakistan soon thereafter, & some 30 temples were razed to the ground then in Bangladesh. Ultimately therefore it is those who call themselves Hindus but who are residing in countries other than India who end up suffering the most.

In any national security state or theocratic state lawlessness will always prevail, especially the persecution of minorities, such as in Pakistan & China, with the latter persecuting both Muslims & Christians on an industrial scale. To HARDIK THANKI: Only the Su-30MKI. Yes it can be.

To RAD: What exactly is smart ammo? It just a round fitted with a proximity fuze, that’s all. And such new-generation rounds are now fired only from the Rheinmetall-supplied cannons. So do rest assured that this RFI too will end up in cancellation of RFP. The Schilka is meant for providing very short-range air-defence while on the move, whereas the air-defence guns red by the IAF & IA are meant for air-defence of static installations like air bases, POL storage areas, ammo dumps, etcetc—all of which require a far greater volume of airspace protection. There is no such thing as a desi RLG. All RLGs are imported from IAI’s TAMAM Division & RCI only makes the EMP-hardenend casings.

To PAWAN: Not just Huawei, but also ZTE.

To ANIL: 1) Did you refer to the Aviastar-SP plant in Ulyanovsk? The IAF won’t go for any new-build UL-76s or IL-78s. 2) Cryogenic rockets use liquid fuel. Strategic ballistic missiles us solid-propellant.

  3. To UNKNOWN/KUNAL: LoLz! Can it ever be proven that Sanskrit was an ‘Indian’ language, since present-day India has the borders gifted by the colonial Brits & since Sanskrit was born in the Central Asian highlands these places are no longer part of India? Therefore, it will be better if we stopped invoking purported past glories & stopped making flase claims to fame. Here’s another recent example: how may events were organised on a national-scale on this day:

    https://indianexpress.com/photos/education-gallery/national-mathematics-day-five-famous-indian-mathematicians-of-all-time-5505116/

Not even a single event! And that shows exactly how ‘proud’ India’s present-day netas are about ‘desi sanskriti’. They all only have to time to houl about making temples & statues, rest assured. And why so? Because they want tangible & visible legacies & hence at the drop of a hat they rush to ‘dedicate to the nation’ such structures, as if they are doing a great favour by donating such structures from their side-pockets:

And this has becoming another fashion & an utter waste of the Indian taxpayer’s money:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDuwbq1DxHo

Thank God these ‘netas’ don’t bother to erect roofs or umbrellas over such structures, for as a result the Almighty finds it quite easy to vector the birds to such destinations where they can deservingly shit on such memorials for free—which is exactly what such memorials truly deserve!!! At least in the West they erect memorials to honour their departed leaders that serve as academic institutions or libraries of excellence where even the Chief Librarian is a PhD holder. But no, never such ba thing in India.

    1. What makes you believe that sanskrit was born in central asian highlands. Are these articles from tue scroll.in. Like you pointed out on left wing extremism, there is also left wind academic extremism hell bent on denuding anything associated with ancient india. In fact nation in Europe are geographical constructs whereas in india nations are cultural constructs. How so? Simply by observing that a tamil Brahmin will marry a Kannada Brahmin, the priest in some temple of north east will be from South india. So to consider in the indian context a nation with geographical construct will fail to explain it's unity in diversity. Hence many western scholars predicted at the time of independence India's balakanisation in 20 years. Guess below link will put light on relation of sanskrit with uralic language and the out if india theory:

  4. ASHISH GAUTAM: O yaar what Hindu majority you are talking about? A Maharashtrian Hindu never shies away from being anti-Gujrati Hindu or an anti-Madrasi Hindu; a North India-based Hindu worshipping Ram cannot tolerate a South Indian Hindu worshipping Ravana; and a South Indian Hindu male won’t tolerate any Hindu woman entering a place of worship in Sabarimala!!! So, do wake up & take stock of ground realities before succumbing to the divide created by man-made faultlines. 1) Final integration of airframe & systems is always done at a single facility because it is cost-prohibitive to make even a single such facility. 2) Because that will be done on the 3rd prototype & it will be the same COMPASS system that is now on the Rudras & LCH. 3) Not chin-mounted, but pintle-mounted as has already been done on the Rudra.

To a certain extent prasoon is right on his observation of Marathi hindu vs gujarati hindu and Madras hindu and so on. But what needs further elaboration that such a scheme of comparison and rejection is done by political parties and adherents in those states. These are an extreme minority. For had the latter not been the case gujarati Hindus would not have survived in mumbai and tamil people would not have dared to come to north india. Hell in delhi many companies have South indian people working and leading north indian people.and so on. In fact I have seen many cases of inter regional marriages purely on caste and faith. In fact it's pretty normal for multi regional people living and working together across the country. Some occasional rants out of frustration cannot be an indication of a deeper heartfelt hatred. That is something western which caused wars among European countries. I really hope Indians understand how we differ from rest of the world and western concepts do not fit into the Indian context. Social contract theory has evolved in the west but alas bufoon have drafted the indian constitution keeping this in mind. Relationship driven societies and different from individual driven society. I.strongly suggest this book " is science western in origins" by CK Raju. This will enlighten everybody including our very own prasoon on what we should be proud of and what we should not.

how are the russian 30mm rated compared to the GA8 30mm of the A-10?

what are the engineering problems encountered

  7. Thanks for the reply sir.

    1) Prasunji, the kamorta class to the best of my knowledge cost 7800 crore according to a report in June 2012. It works out to about 350 million dollar per ship at then exchange rate.
But earlier this year when GRSE submitted a proposal for phillipines navy requirement for 2 ships, they quoted a price of 15 billion pesos or about 175 million dollar per ship!!!
    And that too with missiles.......
How can they explain this sir?

    2) Can the Barak 8 with a maximum speed of only mach 2 intercept a ASCM with a speed of mach 3, as claimed?

    3) So.... the 800km range brahmos is fake news???

    4) Thanks for clarification on the cannister launched missiles sir. So since the Barak 8 is cannisterised, can all 32 missiles be launched in quick succession if need be, to counter a large salvo of AShMs?

    5) Is there any chance of the Indian navy trying to procure OTH radar like the mineral me /type 366 for our warships. Since our warships are short on helicopter for OTH targeting, this would be a great blessing.

    6) What is the range of the sea king MK42b for OTH targeting of a destroyer sized vessel when flying at standard altitude for combat missions?

    7) Since we have used up and tested over 60 brahmos missiles(both land and naval versions), how many does the NAVY have in inventory right now?

    8) When will the navy start receiving the full range brahmos?

    9) Also I remember Brahmos CEO Mishra saying after the march 2017 test of brahmos with longer range, that the Indian armed forces can now target hostiles over 400 km.
Are our brahmos restricted to only 400 km instead of the 550km range for oniks?
Even the Brahmos website only states the 400km range.

    10) You have continously maintained that the YJ 18 missile of the PLAN does not exist.
But now more and more evidence is coming of its existence, including a pic released last year of it being fired from a type 052d destroyer.
It greatly resembles the kalibr externally.
Do you think the chinese have finally reverse engineered the klub missile they got from the ruskies?

    Thanks,
    Vishal

china`s radar development is amazing , it means that they have poured resources and managed to develop a class leading radar even the west has not done apart form israel in the metric freq radars.
Dont you think it is high time that we also do the same as the skies in future will be dominated by stealth type fighters. More over it will be difficult to jam low freq radars as well.
It seems to have made aesa type vhf radar that has a huge aperture. I believe the isro has also made a vhf aesa ground based radar for met purposes .they can easily deliver if they are given the mandate and the funds .What is the best way to go about it .?

What is be the control structure of GSAT 7A/GSAT 7. Does ISRO have any access to confidential data and signal transmission by naval assets and platforms ...??? And in case of air force what will be the nodal contact point/interface with ISRO...please elaborate.

  15. To UNKNOWN/KUNAL: It is neither about any beliefs or about assumptive believing. Firstly, you need to read the Vedas, especially the Rigveda that mentions exactly on the bank of which river it was composed. That river is today known as the Amu Darya, or the Oxus in ancient times. There was a flourishing civilisation—of the Aryans— throughout the course of that river from the west to east for the past 12,000 years. At about 6,000BC the rising water-levels coupled with an earthquake caused that River to change its course, but the civilisations still continued to survive & thrive, but this time the ascent was that of Zoroastrianism & Russian archaeologists have found evidence of all this, including the birthplace of Zarathustra. But this area, after being subjected to drastic climatic changes & invasions (the present-day Afghan city of Balkh was invaded a record 800 times) till the late 1980s has therefore not been comprehensively excavated due to the presence of millions of landmines of all types there. Also to be noted is that thus far, evidence has emerged of only two races that have completely disappeared without a trace & that too rapidly—the Mayans of the Yukatan region & the Aryans from Central Asia. Where did they go to & why are still unknown. Therefore, it is only the now ongoing excavations throughout Central Asia that will conclusively prove beyond doubt whether or not the Aryans were of Central Asian origin. More on all this can be seen in this documentary-series:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYwU0cotVwQ&t=64s
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnDoalZozjE&t=34s

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQkir8XQjaA
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E62uKL7WWLE&t=32s

It will also one day explain why the earliest sculpted writings or written texts found in areas that now constitute present-day India were not of the Devanagri script, but of the Brahmi script. Until then, everyone is entitled to revel in false & fantasy-filled glories about Sanskrit & the Vedas being of Indian origin!

To RAD: What metal-cutting is reqd? All that is reqd are mounts & stabilised pedestals since both the cannon & truck are available off-the-shelf. It will be something like the LD-2000 from China:

    1. @ Prasoon

in my understanding it is fatal to decide on civilization existence of India by going through documentaries aired in 2014 on UK TV. The west being imperialistic in nature and having its own very clear grand narrative cannot accept the reverse migration theory of S Talegeri. Simply because it does not fit into their world view and history centricity.

the Rigveda on their own specifies 10 rivers There is a verse in Nadistuti sukta of Rigveda , hymn of praise of rivers which mentions the following 10 rivers: Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Sutudri, Parusni, Asikni, Marudvrdha , Vitasta , Arjikiya , Susoma. The Shutudri was Sutlej, Parushni was Ravi, Asikni was Chenab and Vitasta was Jhelum.

in fact if one goes into the book of CK Raju "is science western", there is evidence to point that at the age of 30 years, Newton did not discover gravity or invented calculus on his own. infact if soemthing new is invented like calculas, there has to be a history to it of sustanined work with iterations to mature it to a particular level. it is just like the crawl, walk and run theory which applies in all human endeavors. Nothing is created out of thin air and discovered. What people dont know that 50% of work of Newton was Theological in nature. there was transmission of Indian mathematics and astronomy (especially Kerala school of mathematics and astronomy) to europe by translation of these texts by Jesuits and trade with europe.
As can be seen from the trailing article truth is that astronomy and mathematics spread from east to west and many other concepts of science.

      https://www.manchester.ac.uk/discover/news/indians-predated-newton-discovery-by-250-years/

the kerela school of mathematics flourished in 14th and 15th century and it has documented (in malyalam) works in infinite series and calculus 250 years before newton was born. therefore i personally always take western interpretation in Indian history, science, culture, civilization with a handful of salt. Had the country been such bafoonish, i wonder why the europeans wanted to do trade with india at the first place.

  16. To VISHAL: 1) That’s because the P-28A corvettes built by GRSE were ordered when the vessel’s design wasn’t completed & so the half-built hulls had to rot in the shipyard’s wet-basin till the time the IN’s DND completed the design. So the more time one takes to complete the shipbuilding process, the greater the money spent. 2) Yes. It is all about the efficiency of the targeting fire-control algorithm. 3) Yes. 4) Yes. 5) No. Ship-based radars for OTH targetting are useful only against airborne targets, not surface-based ones. 6) Only out to the horizon. 7) Deliveries are always periodic & hence all missiles already fired are replaced every year. 8) IN doesn’t require 550km-range BrahMos-1 Block-3s. 9) The CEO said ‘over 400km, & not ‘till 400km’. So where’s the question about range being restricted to only 400km? 10) It does not resemble the Kalibre at all, which is subsonic. Instead, it resembles the supersonic Novator 3M54E Klub.

To PAWAN: To put it in simple terms, a chartered accountant cannot claim to be an economist. So, if one goes by the whims & fancies of folks like S Gurumurthy, then such disasters will only keep on repeating. Far better therefore to rely on sound common-sense & logical reasoning when making policy decisions.

To RAT: The basic hull-design is the same. But the PLAN’s Type 054A FFGs have the cloned version of the Fregat-MAE radar on the main mast & this radar cannot be exported due to Russia-imposed terms & conditions on China & hence the PN’s FFGs will have the SR-2410C S-band radar, which is explained in the just-uploaded text above.

To AMIT BISWAS: ISRO only maintains & controls the orbits of those satellites. The usage of the transponders & sensors are the domains of the end-users. ISRO has no access to the transponders or the encrypted software being used by the end-users for the uplink-downlink data-links. And BTW, here’s an excellent documentary on the history of J & K, which makes several new revelations:

It reveals for the first time that Pandit Chacha Nehru went to the UNSC in late 1947 & chose the CFL’s contours not based on his own ideas/perceptions, but those of Sheikh Abdullah. Also, the Dogra rulers of J & K were, in the Treaty of Chushul, given ownership of 3 villages around Lake Mansarowar in today’s Gartuk County in Tibet, but India unilaterally surrendered such real estate along with the Consulates in Gartuk & Kasghar in 1954.

  22. To KAPIL: It is not surprising at all, for the inhabitants of ancient Central Asia & ancient Turkey are related & they used to do vibrant trade 8,000 years ago when the Oxus River used tgo get emptied into the Aral Sea & this sea was in turn connected to the Caspian, Black & Aegean Seas. And that is how Jason & his Argonauts travelled from west to east in search of Gold & the Golden Fleece. It is all explained in the 6-part documentary I’ve highlighted above. And Indra was not a God, but a Deva (angel). The ‘Gods’ had appointed ‘Overlords’ or Fallen Angels to rule over mortal human beings those days & these Devas in turn had appointed Sages like Kashyap, Vishwakarma, Vyasa etc etc who were the intellectual guardians entrusted with the task of educating the mortal human beings on all aspects of settled life. Indra used to reside at Indralok, an artificial planet-sized structure that used to orbit around Earth in the same way as today’s ISS does in lower Earth orbit.

  25. To MOHAN: It happened only due to 1 reason: economics. In those days the trading gateways were from northern India to Europe through Central Asia & it therefore made sense for Sanskrit to be the medium of communication by both the high-class priesthoods & wealthy rulers as well as merchants, while down in southern India the Dravidians in those days navigated by sea all the to southeastern Africa & from there they undertook riverine journeys to the gold mines right up to Zimbabwe for excavating gold.

To UNKNOWN/KUNAL: Looks like you’ve yet again jumped to conclusions without venturing to view the archaeological evidence, which is there for all to see & therefore is bereft of any misinterpretation in written form. Europeans, Sumerians, Persians, Africans & Arabs were all trading with India for several thousands of years, but yes, eventually due to reasons not yet fathomed, the natives of India indeed mutated into the buffoonish category & this remains the case till today & it is best exemplified by scumbags like Amit Shah who clings on to a ‘Muslim’ surname while at the same time preaching hatred against Muslims without exception. Consequently, on the long-term, one can only guess how neighbouring Bangladesh will perceive all this & how this will mesh in with NaMo’s Look East, Act East policy! So yes, buffoons (that Bisht fella from Gorakhpur included) are nowadays splurging out the dominating soundbytes about everything that’s unworthy of attention, while doing ZILCH for commemorating events like National Mathematics Day, leave alone the Kerala School of Mathematics! This is buffoonery at its best on display!!! Need I give you any more material evidence?

  29. Thank you for the links to the 6-part documentary. One thing that is crystal clear, if one reads history and visits places like Egypt, the history of the people is all intertwined. Culturally and religiously. The same concepts keep appearing, again and again, just marketed differently.

The problems with Indians and Chinese is that they have both been dominated by the more hungry and hence warlike tribes, generally to their north and west that they have to make everything their own. Its an attempt to get some pride.

The turks in Turkey are recent inhabitant of that country. Most started life as slaves/soldiers of the various islamic empires that existed in west asia (Iraq/Iran). This slave/soliders over a 600 year period + mongol onslaughts in 12th century + drying up of central asia pushed tribes to Turkey and into India. It is one of the reasons Pakistanis and Turkish call each other brother from another mother.

"Here we describe eleven drilled molar crowns from nine adults discovered in a Neolithic graveyard in Pakistan that dates from 7,500 to 9,000 years ago. These findings provide evidence for a long tradition of a type of proto-dentistry in an early farming culture."

  39. To KAUSTAV: VMT indeed, although it was never my intention to make it a tiresome exercise (which you had suggested in jest with a tinge of positive sarcasm, no doubt about that). And in the past 24 hours a splendid new debate has commenced on whether a new hypersonic weapon arms race is Underway. Here’s an interesting discussion on this topic:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv_xibIAyZc

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAzjMnxxKgY

To ANUP: The conclusions are factually wrong. And that’s because BG Chuck Yaeger was interested only in finding out about what was then known as ‘Sparrow Flight’, i.e. the IAF had in 1971 kept in orbit singular MiG-021FLs in orbit from dusk to dawn that served as manual data-links between those IAF MiG-21FLs & Su-7BMs & Canberras & Hunters that went inside Pakistan on night-strike sorties, and the IAF’s ground-based air-traffic controllers. This was done primarily for vectoring the post-strike inbound IAF aircraft back to their respective air bases, thereby preventing blue-on-blue engagement & SAM interceptions under IFR flying conditions. But the PAF & the USAF at that time were unaware of this innovation & consequently they ASSUMED that the IAF was using a USSR-loaned Tu-126 AEW & CS aircraft for airborne battle management, when in reality this was never the case. Also, un the west, the IAF was tasked to only harass & unnerve the PAF through such harassment-type air-strikes & there was no intent whatsoever to totally destroy any PAF air base. However, on the eastern front in East Pakistan, the IAF was tasked to completely render inoperable all PAF air bases like Tezgaon & Kurmitola with overwhelming quantitative superiority coupled with extensively practiced precision-strikes with 500kg bombs. And that was exactly what was done & it was a visiting Soviet military officer from Delhi who went to see the damage caused after December 16, 1971, who was totally surprised by the IAF’s precision bombings of the PAF’s air bases there & it was he who had asked whether the IAF had made use of some kind of laser-pointing device to ensure accurate impact points on the runways. This date is now available on-record in the book MOONLIGHT MARAUDERS by Ret’d AM Teshter Master which deals with TACDE’s origins & the origins of ultra-low-level strike sortie flight-profiles by the IAF using supersonic MiG-21FLs & Su-7BMs back in 1971. In fact, the Su-7BM’s powerful turbofan was used to generate shock-waves by flying the Su-7 at less than 100 feet ASL over Shakargarh in the hope of such shock-waves detonating the three successive layers of extensive minefields that the PA had laid in that area. But the Pakistanis mistook this for the IA & IAF implementing a scorched-earth policy in that battlefield because such shock-waves also destroyed several dwellings.

Only 8 Mirage 2000s have been upgraded so far. 3) Designing is not the problem, but the greatest challenge is the fielding of engineered solutions for which the availability of local industrial capacities & capabilities is lacking. Also, do watch this:

    Two-Front War’s Sobering Arithmetic:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DIzEJ0_7ek

To NEWCOMER: The answer is elementary & is the same for why the colonial Brits used India-supplied workers as civil servants & manual labourers in plantations throughout their colonies. For the divide-n-rule policy to work, societal stratification is reqd under which there are 1st class, 2nd class & 3rd class citizens. In South Africa the Indians came under the 2nd class citizen category & they were allowed to flourish in a limited manner by becoming skilled workers, civil servants & estate managers. The Zulus on the other hand were patronized & within SA they were given enclaves meant only for Zulus to live & administer, like Swaziland, Bophutswana, etc. As for the rest of the natives like those in Namibia, they were treated as 3rd class citizens meant for doing the worst kind of manual work.

  44. Extremely significant revelations about Christian Michel’s questioning, but once again the ‘desi’ journalists are losing the plot:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-BqNTxrHpE

And the ED too is straying wide off course: (Day before yesterday, Michel took Mrs Gandhi’s name in some reference. I won’t say in what reference. So we needed to ask him a follow-up question as to who Mrs Gandhi is… He was given legal access during medical examination when suddenly we noticed that he handed over something to his lawyer, who pocketed it. When we checked, we found that the follow-up questions related to Mrs Gandhi had been slipped to the lawyer).”

    https://indianexpress.com/article/india/christian-michel-august-westland-vvip-chopper-deal-sonia-gandhi-rahul-gandhi-bjp-congress-5515384/

Two points are noteworthy: 1) Christian Michel—as per the ED—sending marketing updates to the Finmeccanica CEO in his capacity as a Consultant. 2) The inability of the CBI & ED to produce any CCTV footage of any meeting that Michel may have had with any Indian civil or military official anywhere within India. So, if Michel did not get his marketing-related information from any Indian citizen, then from where was he getting the latest updates? That leaves us with only 1 option: he was getting his information from the UK High Commission in New Delhi & was then passing such info to Finmeccanica. And how was the UK High Commission getting the information? In all probability through electronic sniffing (by GCHQ) of the electronic communications of the Indian MoD & also possibly the Indian PMO. After all, the GoI too uses several servers (plus Yahoo & Gmail e-mail addresses) that are not based in India. This also perhaps explains how Finmeccanica was kept updated on talks between the Indian PMO & then US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, with the latter involved in lobbying for Sikorsky & Bell Helicopter Textron for 2 significant contracts: for the VVIP transport helicopters & for the LUH/RSH contract. The stakes then were quite high because AgustaWestland was mysteriously blocked from bidding for the LUH/RSH contest, for which the AW-119 was on offer:

    https://www.leonardocompany.com/en/-/aw119kx

The above explains the issue of the UK Govt applying pressure on the UPA-1 govt for a decision in favour of the AW-101 & LUH/RSH contest, since the UPA-1 was then willing to go to any lengths to appease the US in return for securing the 123 nuclear commerce-related agreement with the US, the IAEA & the NSG. And it is due to the UK Govt taking an active interest in these 2 lucrative MoD-related projects that was the most probable reason why the UK High Commission sought consular access to Michel, i.e. for protecting its asset.

AgustaWestland was also at the same time vigorously marketing its AW-139 helicopter for use by various Indian state govts for executive transport, as well as for the Delhi Police & some CAPFs as well.

Therefore, the chances of some politically damaging revelations emerging about irregularities WRT 2 contracts, i.e. the LUH/RSH contest & the contest for executive transport helicopters for state govts/Delhi Police/CAPFs are quite high, & these have nothing to do with the selection of the AW-101, which was a straightforward & transparent deal with no foul-play involved at all.

    1) Thanks for clarifying the cost paradox of the kamorta class. So if the real cost of the kamorta class is $175 million, as opposed to the final cost of ~350 million, what then is the approximate "real" cost of the Kolkata class destroyer and shivalik frigate, minus the cost of delays, considering their final cost was about $1 billion for each of the Kolkata and about $650 million for each of the shivalik?

    2) One thing I've always wondered about Prasun sir, is what happens if a nuclear power like Pakistan breaks up?
Which of its successors will get control of its nuclear arsenal?

Or will all of its successors share it?

When the USSR broke up, all its successors had many nukes stationed there, but they gave it up.

This is not only with ministry of defence contracts but with many other contracts. So chill out nothing new in it. Infact certain contracts are worded in such way thst future price escalations are contractually engaged in. The end result if you get a good product you should be happy with it. However I these contract a with ministry of defence as the end product is not any longer in sight, that's the most lamentable part. In my belief there is nothing to worry about lobbying.

  51. Prasun,
They will never ask the relevant questions.Firstly because they are afraid of the consequences of their actions. And secondly because of a policy followed by all these characters in power who are literally "ekhi thali ke chatte batte" that when in power you save my backside and when I am in power I save yours.Tell me the name of even one of these nasties who are relevant being punished for even one misdeed of theirs. It is literally 'Ram rajya' for all of them where they commit any and all sort of crimes but never get punished at all. They are literally above the law.And today even the populace is literally afraid to react to them for want of protection due to total lack of power with the law and order agencies to deal with such powerful criminals. There are some brave people or perhaps foolish who take them on head on and get killed for their trouble. But that is all in a days work for Indians who literally nowadays avoid such controversies for their own safety and security!

  54. The knowledge of the sacred book is supposed to be transmitted through the Angel Zibrail. The knowledge of mathematics that went from India to Arab was named as Al-Hindsa and the Arabs also called it as Al-Hindsa. Through Arabs the knowledge of Al-Hindsa traveled to Spain and Europe and the Arabs said that they were teaching the knowledge of Al-Zibra, so Europeans called it so. As Al-Zibra is same as Al-Hindsa, so Zibra-il is same as Hind-il (God of the Hind). So Zibrail has to be a revered Angel/God from the India. God knows....

  56. To VENKY: VMT & the very same to you & all your loved ones. 1) Nirbhay’s real developmental challenge isn’t the airframe or its turbofan, but its long-range navigation system & imaging SAR seeker, without which terrain-hugging flight profiles are impossible to achieve. And this is still work-in-progress for the DRDO. 2) Not yet. 3) Hopefully by 2022 when series-production begins, about 16 Mk.1As will start rolling off per annum. This also illustrates what a big deal it indeed is to produce 4th-gen MRCAs in terms of both cost & industrial capabilities & it once & for all quashes all previous claims about the Tejas costing less than its imported counterparts.

To VISHAL: 1) Yes, that’s correct. The same also ap0plies to the Project 71 IAC-1. Domestic industrial production of any type of weapon is a complex inter-ministerial affair involving the ministries of defence, finance, public enterprises, heavy industries, science & technology, education etc etc. So unless there is total synchronisation of the efforts of all such ministries, i9t will be impossible to achieve efficiencies in bulk production of weapons. 2) That depends on which province is in custody of the all-critical warhead triggering hardware & the related source-codes. If they are all concentrated in Punjab, then whatever is held by the other 3 provinces will be inconsequential.

To PINKAL SHAH: 1) here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95TxsfyauCU&t=17s 2) Roughly about 44%. 3) India hasn’t excelled in either space applications or nuclear technologies. In fact, India is only trying to play catch-up & the signing on to regimes like MTCR & NSG only means that India is now able to freely impoprt all those critical components that were earlier denied. 4) About 5. 5) No progress at all so far.

To KAUSTAV: VMT indeed. Looks like both the DRDO & MoD have woken up from their intellectual slumbers at long last.

To MURTHY: Not only until this point, but even beyond this point. I challenge anyone to prove in any court of law that bribes or commissions were paid for procuring the best piece of military hardware (AW-101) that was on offer. And I can also guarantee that the presiding judge, after hearing the arguments, will not be able to stop laughing until his trousers fall off! On the other hand, written testimony & affidavits exist from former DCNS officials who have stated that money had changed hands for the Indian Scorpene SSK procurement programme & that both BJP-affiliated & INC-affiliated middlemen had benefitted from this sordid affair. But despite this, why are both the BJP & INC quiet on this issue?

To KUNAL: the refinement of APFSDS designs, especially their KE penetrator rods, is a continuous process, with a new design being adopted once every decade in response to parallel advances in armour & self-protection.

  66. Hi Prasun,

Could you please let us know what is happening on the jet engines front in India. I have been trying to find on internet but couldn't find anything recent, seems like no recent news out there. There is no news about Kaveri Marine Gas Turbine(KMGT), Laghu Shakti, Manik, HTSE 1200, HTFE 1200, K10 and K9.

Also why are we not investing in commercial engines for planes. I understand that its a capital intensive exercise but since global plane manufacturers are saying that india needs more than 1400 planes, wouldn't it be much more beneficial if we get to develop it and get it certify with those OEMs for India bound planes.

  68. To ALL FELLOW BLOGGERS: Here’s wishing everyone & all their dear & loved ones the very best for a productive & prosperous new year.

To UNKNOWN: HSDTV is a reusable hypersonic vehicle, not a missile.

To PRRANSHU YADAV” LoLz! That question must be posed to those who specialise in unleashing such ‘BREAKING NEWS’!

To AMOGH: LoLz! The Arjun Mk.1A is nothing but the 67.5-tonne MBT with 03 improvements that everyone had labeled as the Arjun Mk.2. And the definitive Arjun Mk.2 is the MBT that weighs 63 tonnes & is made of HNS steel. Data on Shaheen-VII exercise can be found in the latest issue of FORCE magazine, along with the complete & latest ORBAT of the PLA’s Western Theatre Command:

    http://forceindia.net/feature-report/a-valid-concern/

And the Rafale when armed with Meteor LRAAMs will negate all the ‘being claimed’ advantages of the JF-17 Block-3, rest assured.

To SUJOY MAJUMDAR: LoLz! This was the origin of all the senseless rumour-mongering:

    https://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/pakistan-procuring-600-tanks-to-bolster-capability-along-border-with-india-intelligent-sources/story-wiMPaiwlKRgHliUSvlCpZM.html

It then started morphing & growing from there. In reality, the PA wants to graduate from the NORINCO Type 90II/MBT-2000 to the newer NORINCO Type 96BMBT-3000. Also, in a repeat of what is now familiar pattern, after the PA’s COAS visited Mujahid Force at Bhimber on 28-12-2018, this took place:

And finally, here was the clarification on the ‘surgical strikes’ that I was looking forward to:

  71. Hi Prasun, A Very Happy New Year to you. Regarding the questions asked of the surgical strikes, is it really that the IA is unwilling to escalate or is that the Indian Govt. isn't outlining and green lighting the escalation. It's hard to believe that the IA won't can't come up with something better than a counter strike. Won't they be interested in taking outposts in PoK every time there is a cease fire violation from the PA? This may sound simplistic, but it seems to be the least that they could do. Of course it would invite a retaliation, but at least it will be a proper fight, instead of continuing to fight a defensive battle in our own territory and being bogged down in this retaliatory cycle. What sort of attrition have the fire assaults caused really on the capability and will of the PA to keep up this war with India?

"The 76th GA’s 12th Combined-Arms Brigade and the 62nd Combined-Arms Brigade were equipped with the latest Type 99A main battle tanks (MBT) after they traded in their Type 96A medium tanks in November 2016".
So china has deployed type99a tank in TAR, which mean air cooled engine is available?
Can india now has to deployed arjun tank in high altitude terrain?

There are many Civil Aircraft Manufacturers have defuncted over the years like Fokker and Dornier. Is it not possible for Indian government or any Private entity to buy these companies/Aircraft's IPR and set up a production unit of them here in India instead of reinventing the wheel?

The same question for Military transport arena. Can't we buy any Military transport aircraft's IPR and produce them here en masse?

    regards

  75. This Sawhney fella is sounding unnecessarily pessimistic. We are also disappointed that IA did not carry out surgical strikes on sustained basis let alone initiate a limited war probably because IA is not capable enough or did not have the go ahead from the Govt. But Gen Rawat is on record to say that PA has suffered 3-4X more casualties than IA don't know why your friend Sawhney overlooked this fact.

    ReplyDelete
  76. To KAPIL: LoLz! And if the IA's COAS is asked to provide material proof of his claims, will he be able to produce it? And how can anyone even ASSUME that the IA was not capable of carrying out a sustained six-month-long cross-LoC offensive back in 2016? The question that ought to be asked is: do India's Netas even understand what war is all about? Can they tell the difference between limited war & all-out war? Do they have even a rudimentary understand of escalation dynamics? Worst of all, do they even understand the nature of the beast, which is Pakistan? Because, based on what the Indian PM said yesterday in his interview to ANI, I can only conclude that we have Buffoons & Nincompoops at the helm of affairs!!! I will dwell further on this issue alone in the next thread, which explains what cross-LoC strikes are all about & what's reqd for sustaining such punitive operations. In the meantime, kindly stop speculating about what others have overlooked or are overlooking & instead focus more on what is that you are missing or failing to grasp on this issue.

Meanwhile, the PA is claiming that it shot down an Indian quadcopter at Bagh sector (opposite Uri):

  77. To AJS CHIRP: VMT & the very same to you. It is not at all about the reticence of India’s armed forces. Instead, it is all about the utter lack of understanding by India’s ruling civilian elites of the application of either military force or military power. A simple example here will suffice to buttress my PoV: in every discussion on all the ‘desi’ TV channels as well in seminars organized by the ‘desi’ think-tanks on the issue of Two-Front War scenario, have you ever come across any detailed explanation of what the two-front scenario is all about & whether it will entail all-out wars on both fronts or only limited high-intensity wars of very limited durations? And to top it all, NSAB members like Lt Gen Narsimhan & others like him have the temerity to state that the usage of nuclear weapons of any type, be they TNWs or thermonuclear ones, is unthinkable or that usage of TNWs by an adversary against India will invite massive retaliation! And if that indeed is the case, then why did India test two sub-kiloton-yield devices back on May 11, 1998? Were they exploded just for fun-n-games? Don’t these folks know that even under the UN Charter every country has the right to defend itself by all means, which translates into using TNWs for self-defence inside one’s own soil & without violating anyone’s territorial sovereignty?

To PK: Here is that letter:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0taK1FMDTTQ&t=43s

Christian Michel wrote this letter to the then CEO of Finmeccanica & the contents of that letter were based on discussions & feedback that he had obtained from ‘diplomatic sources’, i.e. the UK High Commission in Delhi. And the letter talks about applying diplomatic pressure (not monetary pressure or any other financial inducements) on the Govt of India. Service ceiling specs were diluted so that at least 2 more helicopters copuld compete for the order. Under the original & higher service ceiling specs, only Airbus Military EC-725 Cougar was complying with the service ceiling reqmt, thereby making it a sole-source contract scenario.

To MOHAN: No, the Type 99As are still in Xinjiang & have not entered TAR. The VT-5/ZTQ-105 MBTs are now joining the Type 96 MBTs of the TMD’s 54 Mechanised Brigade.
