First VT-4/MBT-3000 Shipment Bound For Karachi

Back on March 22, 2020, when the Sindh provincial government imposed a 14-day lockdown throughout the province, the Pakistan Army’s (PA) Rawalpindi-based General Headquarters (GHQ) was perturbed, since it then was expecting the lockdown to end by April 2. However, matters came to a head on April 8, 2020, when Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah decided to tighten the lockdown regime and extend its duration till the first week of May in the province to prevent local transmission of the COVID-19 virus.
A pensive PA now, through its ‘selected’ federal government in Islamabad, began tightening the screws so that by the end of the first week of May, a ‘relaxed’ lockdown could prevail in and around Karachi Port Trust. And why so? Because the first tranche of 24 VT-4/MBT-3000 main battle tanks (MBT) is due to arrive at Karachi by sea by May 10 from Guangzhou, southern China, and require unloading.
Developed by the state-owned China North Industries Group Corp (NORINCO) and series-produced by the Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group Co Ltd, a subsidiary of NORINCO, the VT-4/MBT-3000 was unveilled at the EUROSATORY International Defence Exhibition in June 2012.
In August 2012, NORINCO hosted diplomats, military officials and military-industrial contractors from 44 countries at its proving grounds in Baotau for a mobility-cum-firepower demonstration of the VT-4/MBT-3000. Two years later, at the China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition 2014 in Zhuhai, NORINCO showed for the first time a full-scale prototype.
In January 2018, the Royal Thai Army (RTA) conducted in-country mobility-cum-firepower evaluations of the VT-4 at its Cavalry Centre at Adisorn military camp, in Saraburi. Following this, the RTA procured an initial 28 VT-4s in 2016, with an option to order an additional 10 units. The RTA plans to purchase a total of 49 VT-4s in three tranches. The order for the first tranche of 28 VT-4s were delivered in October 2017 and 26 of them were accepted for service in January 2018 with the RTA’s 3rd Cavalry Division in Khon Kaen Province, while the remaining two are operational with the RTA’s Cavalry Centre at Adisorn Military camp in Saraburi, and the Army Armoury Hall. The purchase of a second batch of ten VT-4s costing $58 million was authorised in April 2017.
The PA conducted in-country mobility-cum-firepower trials of the VT-4 between June and December 2018 at its field firing ranges located at the Tilla Jogian Field Firing Range in Jhelum, northern Punjab, and at the Khudai Rang Field Firing Range in Muzaffargarh, central Punjab, following which in July 2019 a contract was inked with NORINCO for the procurement of up to 550 VT-4s and 50 W-753 ARRVs on a fast-track basis. The first tranche comprises 176 VT-4s, with the second tranche comprising 124 VT-4s.
The main reasons for procuring the VT-4s and not the 48-tonne Al Khalid MBTs (licence-built Type-90II/MBT-2000 developed by NORINCO) were, first, the Al Khalid’s 1,200hp Ukraine-origin KMDB 6TD-2 air-cooled diesel engines (similar to the 1,000hp 6TD diesel engines powering the PA’s 320 46-tonne T-80UD MBTs acquired in the latter half of the 1990s) that broke down whenever the MBT was engaged in fording water obstacles; and second, Pakistan’s state-owned Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) has been unsuccessful in procuring high-quality steel from the bankrupt Pakistan Steel Mills. Consequently, the PA has, between 2004 and 2017, been able to procure only 415 licence-built Al-Khalid MBTs, while the VS-21 ARRVs have been procured off-the-shelf from NORINCO.
In addition to Pakistan, NORINCO also exported 44 MBT-2000s (known also as the VT-1A) and three VS-21 ARRVs to the Bangladesh Army in 2011–2013, totally valued at US$162 million.
The VT-4/MBT-3000 is claimed by NORINCO to be powered by a 1,300hp water-cooled diesel, whose full-scale mock-up was first displayed in November 2018. However, this engine has not yet entered series-production and consequently all VT-4/MBT-3000 units meant for export continue to be powered by 900hp NORINCO-made water-cooled diesel engines.
In mid-April 2020, the Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group Co Ltd rolled out the first 24 VT-4s for the PA, following which they were transported by rail to Guangzhou for shipment by sea.
The PA will deploy its VT-4s with the Gujranwala-based 6 Armoured Division (replacing the existing Al zarrar MBTs), whose principal area of operations include the Ravi-Chenab corridor of the plains of western Punjab (inclusive of the Shakargarh Bulge, the Chicken’s Neck area and the Chammb-Jaurian axis). And like the India Army, the PA too has created Integrated Armoured Battle groups (IABG), comprising the Kharian-based 8 IABG under I Corps, Gujranwala-based 19 IABG under XXX Corps, Chunian-based 3 IABG under IV Corps, Bahawalpur-based 10 IABG under XXXI Corps, Multan-based 14 IABG under II Corps, Hyderabad-based 2 IABG under V Corps, and the 12 and 42 IABGs. These formations were formalised and operationalised between 2013 and 2018 (under the so-called “new concept of warfighting”, or NCWF) as a conventional response to the Indian Army’s Cold Start conventional warfighting doctrine.
This by itself negates all earlier assertions of the Pakistani National Command Authority’s Strategic Plans Division SPD) that had stated that “the Pakistanis see no role for nuclear weapons than to deter India from waging a conventional war”, meaning full-scale high-intensity limited conventional war under a nuclear overhang is well and truly possible across both the Working Boundary and the Line of Control (LoC), if not across the International Boundary.
When it comes to combat-support hardware like combat bridging systems procured by the PA from NORINCO, they are of the multi-span 75-metre long-type (like the Indian Army's Sarvatra), as shown below.
This indicates that just as it was the case in both 1965 and 1971, when the PA crossed the Munnawar Tawi River (where the Indian Army had in 1971 demolished the Mandiala Bridge) while trying to advance towards Jaurian and Akhnoor, in a future round of armed hostilities, the PA will yet again make all-out efforts to repeat history.

great article on the chinese tank . I hope ajay shukla enjoys this as the good colonel is a tank man!! but writes articles anyhting apart from tanks!! I do hear that the chinese were quite appreciating the arjun tank.
will the the MWF be designed with the future in mind, where the air intakes are designed for the more powerefull f-414 epe? as well. Is that possible . ? i hope they over come the area rule problem that the basic design had. Is it confirmed thatthe the mwf fighter will hav e the DSI intake ? all the radar and avionics seem to have been finalised apart for the IRST, will the vendor help with the source cosed for integration ? or is it possible to get into collaboration with russia or israel or th west to make one?.
how far do you believe mr seshagir the director for UTTAM aesa radar when he says all the modes will be demonstrated within the end of this year ?
when the balakot strike happend where exactly were the pak AWCS positioned in pak? just to komw if they are vulnerable in future to the meteor rafale compbo?

  4. To GOURAV: No such pop-ups on my AMLCD display. That means your display is being affected.

To RAD: The MWF's scale-models shown at Aero India 2019 & Defexpo 2020 reveal it all in terms of airframe enhancements. No DSI air-intakes were ever envisioned. IRSTs can be sourced from Russia or Leonardo Group. The Uttam AESA-MMR's modes will not mature until 2026. On the night of February 26, 2019 only 1 of the PAF's Saab-2000 AEW & CS was airborne & it was cruising over KPK province. On the next day morning, another Saab-2000 AEW & CS was positioned over Kamra. AEW & CS platforms will not be vulberable to BVRAAMs like Meteor. For that, LRAAMs or LR-SAMs are reqd.

BTW, if you look at photos of PA MBTs exercising in & around the Shakargarh Bulge, you will see that they are heavily camouflaged with clusters of 'Sarkanda' grass all over the hulls & turrets, thereby indicating that the PA nurses deep fears about tactical interdiction strikes by the IAF, & also seems convinced that during actual combat the PA has no expectation of friendly air-cover being provided by the PAF. Check out the slides that I've just uploaded above showing the PA's MBTs during field exercises.

  8. Dear Sir,

These VT-4s are 10% heavier than our T-90's and much more expensive. This is not the norm for chinese products, especially on price. Do they have better protection, night sigths, etc...? How do they compare with our T-90's and how long will the chinese take to deliver these and the SH-15 which PA has also purchased?

    Thank you,

  10. hi prasun
you mentioned meteor will not be able to target the awacs flying in pakistan.
Is it because they have the capacity to jam or they can turn cold ? the awacs will be flying a race track course it will be largely flying at a same range viz a viz the rafale or the su-30mki with the SFDR missile , i would imagine 200 km from the border which is good enough for the ramjet missiles ? why was the chinese awacs not used?
what would be the range of the barak 8 er ? why did the israeli change the configuration of the barak 8 into the mx so soon given the the research that was gone into the basic barak 8?
Is there any progam to make the krasnopol type of shells as we seem to have the basic tech of laser seeker etc?
If the tanks are camoed in grass are they vulnerable to detection by SAR radars? I think the barak 8 has put a scare in the pak tank formation fearing ther will be no air support as usual from the PAF as happened before ? will it not be suicidal for a jag carrying SFM bombs to fly over tank formations to deploy the weapon in todays scenario?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Why has PA bought such a big variety of tanks ?
If local steel was an issue, they could have imported only that from China or elsewhere.
Why whole new tank ? It will be a big maintenance headache.
Is this tank better than T 72 Ajeya or T90 ?

    1) How many T-90 tanks have been ordered by India till now? 1600 or 2000?

    2) Why can't IA order 1000 or so Arjun MK2 MBTs to replace older tanks? Its pathetic to see IA rejecting it becau1of displacement when moat other MBTs - Challenger, M1 Abram, Merkava, Leopard all displace the same as Arjun.

  14. To SRIRANGA: Not anymore, after realising that no one in the world develops a powerpack for single-platform applications.

To ANKIT KUMAR: If HIT in Taxila could not produce MBT-2000/Al Khalid MBTs, then how can even dream about building MBT-3000/VT-4 MBTs?

To HARDIK THANKI: LoLz! After the US Navy embraced CEC, the ones who followed suite were the navies of NATO member-states, then Japan & South Korea. The IN got access to CEC concepts & technologies way later, almost 2 decades later.

To DASHU: LoLz! Are you still expecting a 1,300hp diesel-operated powerpack to emerge from China even after another 5 years? Because I’m not.

To RAT: LoLz! Lots of misconceptions now emerging due to widespread rumour-mongering by the globe’s online fanboys. Has China ever shown any homegrown thermal imager at any of its aerospace/defence expos? No. Do any of China’s existing MBTs use homegrown thermal imagers? No. Then where do such thermal imagers come from? From Belarus, as off-the-shelf imports. And Belarus isn’t approving the export of its thermal imagers to Pakistan, either directly or via China. Hence, a whole lot of misconceptions/assumptions about China’s military-industrial capabilities exist that need to be exposed & the record set right.

To ASD: 1) Still too early to come to a judgement on that score. 2) In Southeast Asia the threat perceptions always have been & will continue to be guerrilla warfare-type armed insurrections, not full-blown conventional warfare. 3) Only partially, not fully. 4) Yes. 5) I’ve always answered all your queries.

To RAD: How can a 120km-range Meteor target any AEW & CS platform cruising 200km away? AAMs powered by SFDR-type rockets are BVRAAMs, not LRAAMs. Barak-8ER’s range will be close to 120km. The IA prefers to procure PGKs using GPSD navigation, not Krasnopol-type rounds. Both SAR sensors & battlefield surveillance radars can detect MBT clusters. The PA lacks mobile battlefield air-defence systems in adequate numbers while the PAF lacks the critical mass reqd for achieving battlefield air-superiority.

To THE ENGDOC SOCIETY: VMT. 1 & 4) It was all explained here:

    https://trishul-trident.blogspot.com/2018/12/24-arjun-arrvs-being-ordered-from-hvf.html

    2) The prototype development is now ongoing at CVRDE & HVF. 3) No, the VT-4s don’t have such enhancements.

To VENKY: Locally producing such a limited number of MBTs is always cost-prohibitive. The T-72CIA Ajeya’s Mk.1/Mk.2 variants & T-90S are still far superior to the MBT-3000/VT-4s & Al Khalids.

  22. To SUMANTA NAG: China's gamble will pay only if it is able to match the annual US financial contributions to the WHO, which is most unlikely. Meanwhile, due to total disregard for lockdowns, Pakistan looks all set to become the most sick country of South Asia, with disastrous consequences as explained here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUmJi4stTZg&t=2s

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD7oocXWb3Q

And the US is now all set to squeeze Pakistan like never before, especially WRT debt relief. And Pakistan knows this & that's why it has not yet written to the IMF for any debt relief, as it knows very well that the IMF will now insist on 2 pre-conditions: denuclearisation of Pakistan; & a 15% reduction in annual defence expenditure.

To JUST CURIOUS: 1) From Croatia during the civil war in Yugoslavia back in the early 1990s. It got access to both the 789 & 840hp versions of the diesel engines then powering the T-72Ms. 2) What for? They won't solve the projectile limitations. What's reqd is a unitary APFSDS projectile of the type Russia showed at DEFEXPO-2020. Presently, due to the autoloader on both the T-72s & T-90S, use of unitary APFSDS projectiles isn't possible due to the autoloader mechanism which dictates that the APFSDS projectile be divided into 2 parts. To KAUSTAV: Not quite (despite such rumours being propagated by the likes of Shekhar Gupta), for N K Singh & Jayant Sinha are now quite busy on devising the roadmap for attracting far greater FDI into the country's manufacturing sector, especially those MNCs that have been asked by the US & japan to withdraw from China. 27. Hello Prasun, regarding your response about my post detailing religion not playing any role in native locals (especially religion of peace); I suppose your present living environment or that of your childhood would have been with them. Let me narrate how your analogy is wrong. After Mappilai rebellion in Malabar region in Kerala in 1920s; the parasites congregated together and started moving towards Kannangod, Kasargod, Ullal, Dharmastala, Kodagu (Coorg), almost up to Goa (where they were literally not present earlier); the situation is the hordes come in occupy all the places by changing the demography beyond repair. They started clearing the forest raping all of its natural resources. Until late 2010, East India Company aka Congress party had the strange hold, dividing castes of Sanathan dharmis and cornering all the votes of religion of peace people. The tipping point was killing of Bhatkal MLA Dr. U Chitranjan in 1996; people realized and changed for good. Now I wonder how you will change the narrative. A better example would be to understand why Bengal was divided on religious lines in mid 1920 (not sure of the dates) and why Momoto Bunurjee is patronizing the people destined to have all Indian resources first and to date no one sane soul (except for RSS resources) spoke about plight of Sanathan dharmis in land of extra milk and sweeter honey (Bangladesh) and beyond (Myanmar).
You are superb blogger/writer on matters of defense and a biased one in terms of religion and may be your roots does not allow to talk against them.

  33. Dada why not you do your own part by writing or informing to IAF and RM to don't lose this opportunity to buy A330 s I know they do know about this but still.. And do you think only 4 AEW&CS Airbus platforms will do the job? I thought we need at least 8.

  34. Prasun da, you said in a reply that Barak 8ER max range is 120 KM. Isn't it 150 KM? Even the Basic Barak 8 range was increased from 70 KM to 90 KM.

  35. To GANESH: VMT, but what you choose to label as religion, I prefer to label it as religiosity, since the entities you mention, i.e. Sanatan Dharmiks, have nothing to do with any foundational edict of any religion, but in reality are one of several cults. It is such spiritual/intellectual dilution over the past several centuries that has degenerated the present-day narratives into competing binaries & this consequently has also discredited the original precepts of Manusmriti, which was one of several value-based tools in ancient times employed for the fulfilment of social contracts by various organs of settled & organised communities at a time when money/currency-exchange practices were not prevalent. Hence, unlike you, I will never make the mistake of assuming that religion & religiosity are one & the same & hence our respective narratives will be radically opposed to one another & hence it is futile to consequently claim whether one is biased or enlightened.

To VENKY: 1) yes, the G-to-G route is always available for emergency sole-source procurements & this has been the case since the early 1980s. Similarly, since several hundreds of B.737s are now lying unsold with Boeing, the MoD can easily pay an initial downpayment for buying up at least 10 such brand-new airframes at bargain-basement prices & subject them to P-8I LRMR/ASW conversion programmes for the IN by the year’s end. 2) Yes. But they too contain critical imported content.

To RAD: They are land-mobile & keep moving all the time. Not the BrahMos-1, but the smaller & lighter BrahMos-NG. A bigger version of Arudhra is reqd, like the LRTR. AEW & CS platforms cannot guide SAMs at present, but through SATCOM can provide an airborne target’s locational coordinates to a ground-based LRTR that also acts as a target illuminator for LR-SAMs. Becaused the LEDS-150 APS is now facing competition from Israel’s IRON FIST APS. That’s because the Merkava was operating over urban terrain minus the ICVs & hence the Kornet-E launcher could not be neutralised by the ICV. In battlefields where armoured engagements take place, the ATGM launchers will always be neutralised by the ICVs & also by armed aeroscout helicopters & Rudra-type gunships.

  36. To ASD: 1) if the GoI does not possess any vision for catering for migrant workers during a pandemic, how can you expect it to have any credible vision for military force build-ups? As it is the MoD can’t even provide face-masks of the same colour & dimensions for even its top decision-makers, as I had earlier pointed out. 2) It has done so since independence. Just look at the overwhelming numbers in which Muslims make up the IA’s Regiments like the Grenadiers, Rajputana Rifles, J & K Light Infantry & Bihar Regiment, not to mention large nos of Muslims serving with various CAPFs. Lack of such information in the public domain leads folks like you to ASSUME that the Muslim communities of India aren’t yet patriotic. And if you really want to know what the faultlines are & how they emerged sometime in 1857 & how the colonial Brits successfully exploited them, then do read the report on why 1857 Sepoy Mutiny happened & what were the lessons learnt. For this, a Royal Commission was formed in July 1858, under the charge of the Secretary of State for War, Lord Peel & here is his report:

    http://www.csas.ed.ac.uk/mutiny/confpapers/Rand-Paper.pdf

    3) NDU is the highest centre for intellectual excellence for any military institution that deals with all aspects of national security, not just military security. Hence, in all the reputable NDUs around the world, they all have their own in-house national wargaming simulation centres that can also be used for simulating various types of national emergencies, like pandemics, & such simulations also provide precious lessons & insights into what ought to constitute the do’s & don’t’s during such emergencies.

To YOUNGBENGAL: Such craft have become next to useless for attacking ports or naval bases, since the latter nowadays have advanced networks of underwater intrusion detection systems.

    PA's Mujahid Force: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgYJDTopez8

To BLACK BOX: What is the LEDS-150, to begin with? It uses the same RWRs, LWRs & MAWS sensors as those already installed on the Rudra gunships & will also be on board the LCH & LUH & Mi-17V-5. The only new part of LEDS-150 for any armoured vehicle therefore is the projectile launcher.

To SUMIT SEN: Why don’t you make the suggestion on behalf of this blog to the MoD? Let the DRDO first deliver on the 4 A330-320 AEW & CS platforms & then we all can discuss whether or not to procure another four of them.

  41. Hello Prasun, thanks for the response. I am only concerned about self and others who want to lead life in own terms as per the definition of Sanatana dharma, This is regardless of views and efforts of others who want to propagate lies and inferior mindset like the saying "religion of peace people have the first right on all Indian resources". I acknowledge that over period of time several course corrections were required to protect the way of life. A exemplified, efforts are required to convert Pataliputra to Sanatana dharma from Thakshashila. This has been the case and will be the case forever, so I do not bother about cult/bhakti marg and other derivatives as it was required to adapt survive and thrive in the modified environment. Just for example about child marriage, when the religion of peace people come in, pickup girls (regardless of others identity) rape them and pull them down to the same shit hole they come from; there is no alternative but to go in for child marriage. In most places this is no longer warranted now; however, in some like places in Sindh, Kyber and most part of current Afghanistan, it is very much required. I believe you have the intellect and pray that you become the trigger for positive change (and implement it in your lifetime itself) in your present and ancestral land for betterment of people who wish not to be slaves of looser.

Sri Subba Rao, all the best to you and may you gain strength to work hard to extinguish yourself and your ilk (like Ramanath Rai) at the earliest.

My question is regarding central vista and new parliament project.
How do you see these projects. Are these projects needed or these are just vanity projects. Whats your take on this. Are these undertaken on intelligence agencies advise to bring in the seat of the government together so that these areas are better secured.

  44. Prasun da,

    1) What is the status of HAL LCH? Even after 10 years of first flight it is nowhere close to production.

    2) Is BrahMos 2 a version of Zircon? Zircon has been tested many times. When will BrahMos 2 trials begin?

    3) Can CONVID-19 pandemic bring down the cost of Rafale? Can we strike a favourable deal with Dassault for like 72-90 more Rafales at a much lower cost?

    4) You said in a comment that Barak-8 ER max range is 120 KM. Isn't it 150 KM? Also has basic Barak 8 range been increased from 70 to 90 KM?

    5) Should we look at Russian Boomerang or some other APC since Tata Kestrel seems to be going nowhere?

    6) Did we compromise with going for AK-203 as the new IA standard assault rifle instead of SIG 716 G2? The SIG rifle is expensive but if we can spend billions on warships and aircrafts then why not spend more to equip our troops with the best rifles?

    7) In Oct 2018 India has selected South Korean Hybrid Biho over Pantsir. Russia had protested against this decision. The Russian defence minister raised this issue with his Indian counterpart. Between Biho and Pantsir which system is better for us?

That will tell u what kind of sickularism is being practiced since 1947..hahaha..nd last but not the least..evry single person taking birth in this country is a hindu..cauz hindu is not a religious identity .its a geographical identity..those who are born in the land between the "HI" HIMALAYAS AND THE "INDU" INDU SAGAR ARE CALLED HINDUS.the descendants of bharata who believed in vasudeva kutumbukam and prayed first in the morning sarve bhavantu sukhinah..sarve santu niramayah..sarve bhadrani pachantu..maa kaschit dukhbhagbhavet..
The only sin of these people was they did not change their attitude according to changed times.. in the age of deceit , lies, rivalry, backstabbing,, they believed in peace nd brotherhood..they expected brotherhood from people who were on a mission to convert entire world to one religion and refers to others as kafir..they got a taste of brutality of kaliyuga very early than what others are tasting now..but as its said.".no one can destroy truth..u can just hide it for some time but it will arise more vigorously than before".while these muslim invaders and christian crusaders destroyed every ancient civilisation but they cuouldnot destroy the soul of bharat..that bharat is again rising..plz forgive me if i have hurt ur sentiments in any way dear..but truth is truth..and u will come to know about it sooner or later..god bless u

Later SAAD was found in Western Pakistan port for its safety. No

  67. To RAD: The UN is HQed in New York, which happens to be sovereign US territory. The US, along with the UK, Germany, France & japan can easily set up a parallel UN & ask all countries to join the new UN & simply dump the old UN with China & Russia in it. Do you really reckon that all those countries who suffered casualties from this pandemic will still prefer to forgive China? Already the clarion call was given yesterday:

    https://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/184-nations-going-through-hell-as-covid-19-wasn-t-stopped-at-source-says-donald-trump/story-D49QalY9ja1yFeUxF3QTYJ.html

Over the coming weeks, watch some countries switch their diplomatic recognition from China to Taiwan. About GaN modules, it was all detailed in the thread dealing with GAETEC. Water-fording capability for all armoured vehicles is a must. Even MBTs require water-fording capability. Consequently, APCs & ICVs require such capabilities as well. That's why despite the availability of BLT-72 & Arjun BLT, the T-72CIAs, T-90S & Arjun MBTs all have water-fording capabilities.

To SENTHIL KUMAR: All the videos are still accessible on his YouTube account. Despite this, why he is claiming that he's banned makes no sense.

So what are you saying India should kick everyone else out so you can masturbate dreaming of some Khajuraho temple just like Pakistanis do? Grow up and stop hiding behind computers. By the way watch some anti-scammer youtube videos and find out how easy it is to track down people right down to where they live. So no point hiding. By the way if it was me, I would look up the Constitution which you have neither the desire to learn nor obey.Talking about patriotism- so you are saying all the saffron saints suddenly woke up to the great nationalist fervour and regardless of the financial state of India will reject visa applications overseas given the chance? The constitution declares India a sovereign, socialist, secular,[13] democratic republic, assuring its citizens justice, equality and liberty, and endeavours to promote fraternity.[14] The original 1950 constitution is preserved in a helium-filled case at the Parliament House in New Delhi. The words "secular" and "socialist" were added to the preamble in 1976 during the Emergency.

  69. Praveen Mohan's claims do make sense- he wants more people subscribing - kind of a super sale for a very limited time offer. What could be an issue is his accent and voice- for someone born /grown up in the US he sounds like as if he is faking the American accent e.g. Balt instead of built (bilt; tumphle for temple - never heard of any American speaking like that!

Any possibilities of having such types of smart border management solutions in india , particularly in Punjab, jnk, and north east having foliage and unfenced border and even anti naxal ops having heavy foliage...I mean why our planners at central are so buddhus by ever increasing CAPFs size like BSF,with ITBP, SSB and ballooning manpower cost instead of investing in these type non recurring cost solutions...

Even drdo/lnt could team with them to make tailor made indian solutions at scalable rate at competitive prices...I mean no one has such vision in top echleons??

  71. Dear Prasun,

I would like to thank you for your patience answering my questions regarding religiosity based questions. Still I have few more in my mind and want to clear it.

    1. You recently in an answer told that no citizen has right to protest and take law in its hands if the law is passed by the parliament. The Muslim community has protested violently. Even during the pandemic, you can find Muslims are the most anti-law community. Your view upon this.

    2. Further why muslim community is crying secularism when the Koran itself teaches that every other religion is haram and their followers are kafirs. It's completely playing victim card. They are such inhuman that everyday they curse Modi and Shah for 2002 riots in Gujarat; but completely show blind eye to masscare of 60 devotees in train burning. Similarly curse army in J and K but always show blind eye to Kashmiri pandits expulsion.

Muslims community is radicalized and not dudh ka dhula hua as you say. Please elaborate.

  72. To AMIT BISWAS: Anyone examining the topography of India’s land borders will easily realise that any kind of smart fencing is at best only effective on hard ground, as shown in that marketing video. Even the best of smart fencing networks are 100% useless over streams, nullahs, and desert sand-dunes. After all, human beings belong to Mother Nature, but Mother Nature never belongs to human beings, as Atheist China is now discovering after needlessly fiddling & toying with nature’s creations (by deliberately extracting the Coronavirus from Bats & trying to manipulate its genomes).

To ASD: VMT, but you still seem to be influenced by non-factual assumptions. 1) There are millions of non-Muslims in India who are even now violating lockdown laws. What about the entourage of Telengana’s CM violating the lockdown for the sake of conducting some rituals earlier this month? What about no less than a former PM of India violating social distancing norms during his grandson’s wedding in Karnataka? Why are you overlooking such prominent violations? 2) The Quran DOES NOT preach that & cannot preach that, simply because it acknowledges the existence & sanctity of Judaism & Christianity & also acknowledges that Moses & Jesus were Holy Prophets as well. Only certain Mullahs like Zakir Naik preach that every other religion except Islam is second-class or third-class. Therefore, you ought to be objective in your own assessments & not get swayed by emotions/sentiments. As the saying goes, one must learn to separate the wheat from the chaff. I never labelled any community as being dudh ka dhula. That is your own erroneous & assumption since you are indulging in painting via broad brush-strokes. One needs to be far more insightful & delve into the details, where the devil always lurks.

It is now high time that India stopped being a fence-sitter & instead stood up to China like Australia has.

To PRAJJWAL DALAL: 1 & 2) We are talking about a brain-dead country that will soon be, alongside China, at the receiving end of 184 countries that will claim gigantic financial compensation/esparations from China through each & every means. And since the PA will never allow reductions in defence spending, the only option then becomes a reduction of developmental spending in the capital account of the budget. 3) I would say that successive govts after 1971 NEVBER bothered about issues like civil defence. If you talk to your family elders, they may perhaps tell you that till 1971 all Indian states used to conduct regular civil defence exercises that in many ways fostered societal cohesion & brought about an element of civic discipline. But mysteriously, since 1972 this practice of conducting regular civil defence exercises was done away with. And today countries like South Korea & Taiwan are faring well against the pandemic only because they have continued with the practice of conducting regular civil defence drills several times a year, which in turn enhances national cohesion as well as collective societal discipline & civic awareness. 4) Not at all.

To KAPIL: The GlobalEye is capable of both AEW & C and maritime surveillance, whereas the EMB-145I Netra is capable of only AEW & C.

Neither the Indian programme anchor nor that bullshitter panelist Bharat karnad seem to be aware that France was abruptly chucked out of the JV that was originally set up for creating the P-4 Bio Lab in Wuhan. Consequently, both these bullshitters effortlessly walked into the trap set up by the China-based panelist.

PA COAS visited the LoC (the Uri Bulge/Haji Pir sector) yesterday, his first since his last visit on September 6, 2019:

He went there to inform his troops in advance of an impending IA tactical offensive, which will take place after the next ISI-sponsored terror-strike inside J & K, which is already in the coming. And that's precisely why the COAS has begun spreading the false narrative that such an offensive will come after India stages yet another false-flag terror-strike inside J & K:

  80. Prasun sir, hw r u nd family? Came here after a long time sir..first of all a very informative article perfectly researched and thus effectively burying all those rumours of russia seeling t90 to pakos..haha.

Sir, it seems ur prediction of p75 i..coming true again..due to financial pressures there are serious talks within the navy of abndoning p75i and instead going for 3 more scorpene and 3 more modified arihant class able to fire the upcoming land attack cruise missiles from its missile compartments..i just wanted to confirm from u..hv u heard this yet or not?
2- the newly upgraded t72bm3 is virtually a t90..dont u think instead of buying another 400 t90ms..the indian army could have upgraded all its 2700 t72 to bm3 standard at that price?? It really seems more the money one has less the common sense ..our forces are longing now only for best and ultimately the expensive
3- do u think the ge 414 98kn wud be sufficient for the single engine mwf?? U have always said that a 110 kn class engine is must for the airframe..do u think it will hamper the aircraft's agility and power in any way?
4- regarding the maws 300 of saab..can it be effectively synchronised with dhruti rwr?the placement of maws300 on su30mkm is really very smart and the syatem is very compact i must say..why cant we go for the same, instead of pylon mounted?

Prasun sir going by the above information that you have provided about the pakistani coas visiting his troops and informing them about the future response to a sure shot pakistani terror attack on our soil few questions arise. A) Are the pakistanis in the same position in terms of war waging capabilities like the IA of 1962 when the chinese burned bonfires in front of our troops, how would you rate the fighting capabilities of the PA. B) What will be the response of indian army this time and has our political leaders finally decided to do what was mandated by parliament way back. C) what is the end game of corona virus in this world and what did the chinese availed to benefit from it. My question is if the Barack 8 is co developed by IAI and DRDO, then why does IAI get to market it independently not involving any Indian input. And if IAI is able to develop the complete system, couldn't we just bought the system off the shelf. It feels like a wrong commercial agreement. It probably should have been like Brambos aerospace.

  88. To SATYAKI: What kind of a question is that? The combined length of the WB & LoC is more than 800km & how can the PA visualise from where the offensive will be initiated & where will it be staged? No army in the world since recorded history has been able to ensure that every single inch of territory under its control is totally defensible.

To SUJIT: 1) Those decisions were taken way back last year itself before the creation of the post of CDS & the DMA. 2) The CVRDE-developed Mk.2 version of the upgraded T-72CIA is almost identical to the T-72BM3. 3) The MWF’s total avionics content will be much lighter & less voluminous than that on the Tejas Mk.1A. In addition, by the time the MWF enters series-production, uprated versions of the F414 turbofan will be available. 4) It has already been done. Dhruti RWR can be interfaced via MIL-1760A digital databus.

To SUSAN: That is a highly speculative, misleading & error-ridden story. Not a word of it is believable.

To BENO: 1) Had already answered that quite a few times before. 2) There’s no need for it during peacetime. But in wartime the BSF has always come under the IA’s command.

To NAYANDEEP: A) No, for that country is under ever-increasing international pressure to reduce its defence spending. Also, do read this: https://theprint.in/opinion/pakistan-military-wont-take-covid-budget-cuts-hired-ex-dg-ispr/411641/ B) No, because the liberation of PoK will be possible only when a East pakistan-type situation will prevail, i.e. widespread civil discontent & hostility toward the PA. C) The end-game will be game-changing in terms of formation of new geo-econimic alliance backed up by QUAD-type military understandings, & also regime-changing for countries like China & Pakistan.

To ADITYA: Because the bulk of the IPRs of the Barak-8 belong to RAFAEL & IAI. The India-held IPR is only for the rear-end of the missile that houses the propulsion system. Even for BrahMos-1, take it from me that it will NEVER be exported, despite all the contrarian nonsence emanating from Indian ‘netas’ & ‘desi patrakaars’ since 2001. That’s why the Yakhont & Bastion-P versions have been procured by Indonesia, Syria & Vietnam.

To DASHU: No, this expected tactical offensive will only act as the precursor & will not deliver the final death-blow, because that will come only after the world succeeds in cornering China in a post-CIVID-19 world & in the process aloso results in loss of China’s financial support for Pakistan, just like Iran is now being hung out to dry.

  98. To BHOUTIK: That will be possible only if the assasins are identified as being of Pakistani origin.

To JUST_CURIOUS: Makes no difference at all, because many of those who had remained unnamed/unidentified are now being caught/captured inside Afghanistan nowadays. Hence, in net terms, the number of identified terrorists of Pakistani origin is steadily increasing.

To ANIONE: Why should that be so surprising? There are 184 countries who are presently pissed off & almost all of them will also soon ask for China to be thrown out of the WTO due to its unkept commitments & consequently its unfair advantage as a manufacturing powerhouse. Since 2013 till this January, the trend was that of China being hailed as an alternative to Western democracy—a now-discredited notion that was actively backed by Singapore-based rabid anti-India former civil servants like Kishore Mahbubani. To ASD: Not more than 14 days of actual warfighting, preceded by 90 days of logistical preparations.

To HOODS007: 1) No, the JF-17 Block-3 too carries an underwing ASPJ pod. 2) JF-17 Block-2 has only 2 rear-mounted MAWS sensors, which has increased to 4 on the JF-17 Block-3 with the addition of 2 more MAWS sensors in the mid-fuselage section above the side-mounted air-intakes. 3) I didn’t say that. What I had stated was that the DAE’s BARC had in the previous decade itself indigenously developed a shore-based desalination plant. Such plants can also be located on ships so that they can be quickly deployed by sea for disaster-relief missions. Nothing to do with Israel.

  99. To RAD: Why should ‘over-the-shoulder’ mean the SRAAM/CCM going rearwards? It also means being fired at 45-degreee off-boresight while the missile-launching aircraft is banking to the left. For any air-to-air missile to be successful against AEW & C platforms, salvo firings will be reqd to overwhelm the EW suites of the AEW & CS platform. Agility metrics of the MWF will be a compromise in the same way as those of the Gripen, since the great majority of air combat manoeuvring is nowadays done by all-aspect SRAAM/CCM. The SGH X-band SAR seeker was being imported but now both DATA Patterns & ECIL are making the ‘desi’ seekers of comparable performance. And here are more videos for weekend viewing:

  102. Dear Prasun Da,

Thank you for your reply to my previous query. It is just that I am amazed by the reaction of Australian media and how they are going ahead to hold China responsible for this disaster which we are facing. Nowhere in the world, we see so much media outrage such as like Australian media.

I have one more query or rather I am looking for some information here. Some time ago in this blog, I believe, in comment section, you mentioned about the geography of Leh/ Kashmir and how it was a large water body and I believe this was a vital clue related to migration theory and you mentioned that research needs to be carried out in this area and you mentioned that Americans may carry out this research.

Could you please explain it here and, if possible, share some links and articles. I am looking to study these points for quite some time and is not able to find anything of substance.

  107. Hello prasun,
Remember reading your prediction on impending ghastly act, this recent turn of events seems to follow a pattern. The terrorists take hostage hope to draw the best, during rescue attack and die and this cycle is repeated. This conflating with civilian/s seems to be the major cause for fatalities. Do you see a way out of this hostage kind of situations. Protecting the people and at the same time taking terrorist out clearly shows in the lower civilian casualties but also increasing forces sacrifices.

  112. Prasun sir, Why did our men go inside that damn house instead if blowing it up? I ask this question everyone our troops are killed in action while rescuing civilians. We have lost too many troops in operations like this. Nobody knows if these bloody civilians were hostages or terrorist supporter who welcomed them to their house. They could well be terror supporters acting as hostages in a planned way to entrap our troops. Remember Col Rai? Civilians made him believe that terrorists want to surrender, he was trapped, and killed by terrorists un 2015. Time has come for IA to revise its rules of engagement.

  113. Prasun Da, the market value of Embraer has come down to just over a billion dollars. India should explore the opportunity to buy the company by reaching out the govt of Brazil. To HOODS007: 1) Yes, & it was explained here: http://trishul-trident.blogspot.com/2013/10/clearing-mist-on-airborne-ew-suites.html

    2) The following can easily be integrated with both Tejas Mk.1 & Mk.1A variants:

Here are 2 interesting videos of the Handwara intervention operation:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i103Z1BLCxQ
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOSHmgmtGgs

They clearly show that: 1) It was a 2-storey house. 2) Extensive use was made of Carl Gustav LAWs firing HESH rounds. 3) The 21 RR’s martyred CO was from a mechanised infantry regiment who was trained for engaging in armoured manoeuvre warfare. Now, all the retired IA officers interviewed have & will continue to applaud the martyrdom of the fallen warriors & praise their gallantry & valour to astonishing heights, but will NEVER answer the most crucial question, which is: why are the IA’s highly-trained human resources being used for engaging & liquidating a rag-tag bunch of terrorists armed with only UBGL-equipped SLRs? Can’t any of the CAPFS carry out such operations, if they are already carrying out similar operations in areas afflicted with Left Wing Extremism (LWE)? Is India incapable of raising/creating specialised CAPF units even after 30 years of proxy war inside J & K? It is these questions that need to be answered by the country’s ‘netas’ who are devising national security policies.

Now, coming to the actual operation, the 4-man goup of terrorists came from a Launchpad located here: 34 17 51.44 N, 73 54 8.58 E. They then infiltrated the LoC through a nallah located here: 34 17 52.00 N, 73 56 14.49 E (Leepa Valley). From there, this group proceeded to Rajwara Forest (located here: 34 23 17.49 N, 74 15 44.21 E) south of Handwara town. Locate these coordinates on GoogleEarth & you will be able to understand their movements. Now, coming to the 2-storey house, the hostage-rescue manual clearly states that the intervention should always begin from the highest ground, i.e. the top-most floor, in order to guarantee success. This was also the case in 1984 when storming the Golden Temple in Amritsar & again in 26/11 at Chabad House. Despite this, why heliborne infantry personnel were not dropped on the rooftop remains a mystery. Secondly, what about the much-hyped armed robots & wall-penetrating radars reqd for such missions? Where were they when they were reqd the most? Unless such questions are answered, such totally avoidable & uncalled-for mishaps will continue to be justified as “sacrifices made above & beyond the call of duty & honour”.

To SATYA: If you reckon that R K Tyagi is making sense, then you are on the wrong side of the debate. For, as I had explained a day earlier, it is not about India asking fvor a stake in Embraer, but all about both Brazil & Embraer deciding whether or not to give India a stake. Viewed from Embraer’s lens, it will welcome stakes from anyone that offers a far bigger/lucrative global supply chain & offers solutions that will supplement & not compete against solutions already offered by Embraer. Does any entity from India offer such options to Embraer? Of course not. In that case, let one not get carried away with falsde notions of grandeur & instead learnt to cultivate a holistic scientific/engineering/business-oriented bent-of-mind.

    1. India has managed to design an aircraft carrier (hopefully indigenously). Then why we need foreign help for Fleet Support Vessel or LPD/LHD? Ideally we should have leveraged knowledge gained from aircraft carrier design experience.
    2. Why we need help/consultancy from UK to design Vishal (IAC-2)? (It is different question whether IAC-2 would be worthwhile investment at all vis a vis a fleet of SSK, SSN and SSGN). Like I argued earlier IAC-1 design experience should have paved the way.

  127. Hi Prasun, a couple of points/questions:

    1. I think India should officially call for a UN inquiry into the causes/origins of the Wuhan virus outbreak in China. IOW, we should publicly take the side of Australia and the US in this matter.

    2. The following is a link to an article by a British (i.e. RAF) pilot on an exchange mission with the IAF flown in Siachen: https://luckyaviator.wordpress.com/2020/04/29/behind-the-drag-curve-anecdotes-from-an-aviation-career/

I find this article amazing (in a good way) because I had no idea there was this kind of cooperation between India and NATO/Western countries in this politically super-sensitive area (Siachen glacier). Makes me wonder what other kind of training/preparation is going on in secret with, say, the Americans, the French or the Israelis. This is all my speculation, of course, but I can't help but be reminded of your remarks about a future joint (Indo-US) military operation to take over POK.

With China getting so aggressive these days all over the globe, I wouldn't be surprised if they make an overt move on Gilgit/Baltistan, i.e. move PLA troops in there in large numbers and dare India to go to war.

Your thoughts on this would be most appreciated.

  128. To AD: 1) a FRV can easily be designed in-country wioth the help of a foreign consultant & in fact Mumbai-based MDSL as shipbuilder can easily team up with Italy’s Fincantieri to build larger versions of the two FRVs that the IN had acquired from Fincantieri in the previous decade. 2) The decision to design IAC-1 on one’s own without any foreign consultancy was a DISASTROUS experience because the design had to be changed 8,000 times, thereby causing construction delays.

To HARDIK THANKI: The Kanchan armour is as good as its global counterparts.

To ASD: 1) That’s because India on her own is trying to find out if indeed it is possible to extract the virus from Bats & have it modified for human transmission. Meanwhile, China-based OEMs like these are now advertising in several Indian national newspapers, like this:

    https://www.oreelaser.com/Product-Category/Mask-production-line-16.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5r2mqNma6QIVFIVoCh1HLwOBEAEYASAAEgKUrvD_BwE

    2) Not at all, certainly not for this reason.

To SAURABH: Here are additional details on the Pak terrorists & how/when they probably infiltrated into the Valley:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_w7-NBxjCQ

However, before India could even verify the identity of the killed terrorists, Pakistan a day earlier had claimed to have known that 2 of the 3 killed terrorists hailed from the Valley & hence this was released 2 days ago:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b_lcSyBy24

This can only be possible if Pakistan had known in advance that this group of 3 terrorists that was killed had contained 2 locals (militants) hailing from the Valley, i.e. these 2 would have crossed the LoC & gone over to PoK sometime in early 2019 or late 2018.

Following this was the revelation by India that all 3 terrorists were carrying China-made weapons. Since nobody in India uses such weapons, the source of such weapons can only be from PoK:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQnaSeIHZUM

Hence, China should now be confronted by India with such undeniabled evidence & should be asked for a formal explanation. And finally, to spread further disinformation, FAKE NEWS of this type emanates from Pakistan:

  136. To AD: The problem was NEVER about about lack of CAD/CAM software. In fact, early in the previous decade itself, the IN’s Naval Design Bureau had imported the TRIBON CAD software developed by Sweden’s Kockum Computer Systems for the Project 28 ASW corvette programme (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-LNNXttyoM). Today, several such CAD/CAM software is available from the following:

    https://www.tenlinks.com/cad/PRODUCTS/marine.htm
    http://3dship.nl/
    https://sw.aveva.com/engineer-procure-construct/engineering-and-design/outfitting
    https://www.marine.sener/foran

The delays are caused PRIMARILY due to the IN’s indecisiveness in freezing the detailed design, because the IN is always waiting till the last moment to select the best available hardware for installation on warships, like the much-delayed decision to select/order the 127mm naval guns from BAE Systems. If this BAD HABIT is gotten rid of, then deliveries of locally-built warships will be greatly accelerated. 1) The Russia-developed navigation system was replaced at the very outset with the RLG-INS imported from IAI of Israel. Now the SGH X-band SAR seeker is being replaced by ‘desi’ DRDL/LRDE-developed seeker that will be series-produced by both ECIL & DATA Patterns (due to the huge reqmts, both for BrahMos-1/A/NG & also for the Nirbhay’s ALCM & SLCM variants). The rest of the BrahMos-1 has already been localised. 2, 3 & 4) Nothing pertaining to the performance characteristics of the missiles, rest assured.

To MAVERICK: If such information is released on a global scale, it will have catastrophic effects at the psychological-level throughout the world.

To AMIT BISWAS: All that it means is that the US has at last accepted Russia’s conception of the future battlefield in which the MBTs will have to be supported by the Tank Support Combat Vehicle (like the existing BMPT Terminator). Only after these two vehicles will the ICV be able to enter the battlefield. Consequently, the Tank Support Combat vehicle will have to be nearly as heavy as the MBT itself but it will also be able to operate tactical VTOL UAVs for 360-degree battlespace awareness, which in turn will free the single-engined armed aerosocut/RSH helicopters to undertake other taskings. Such conceptual transformations at the intellectual-level have yet to make inroads into the IA’s institutions such as ARTRAC & consequently, projects like FRCV & FICV continue to languish since the IA hasn’t yet been able to figure out what will be its preferred Tank Support Combat Vehicle solution. Very sad state of affairs indeed & a sure sign of institutional intellectual regressiveness.

To VED: What’s holding India back are 2 deficiencies: 1) the lack of political will & the consequent defensive mindset at the political-level, & 2) the consequential institutional intellectual regressiveness within the armed forces of India, from which such statements continue to emanate: “Unless Pakistan gives up its policy of state-sponsored terrorism, we will continue to respond appropriately and with precision. India will give proportionate response to all acts of infringement of ceasefire and support to terrorism by Pakistan.”

My question is: why only ‘proportionate’ response? Why not ‘disproportionate’ to dramatically raise the costs for the enemy? Why draw a self-imposed mental ‘Lakshman Rekha’ that rules out disproportionate responses?

To UNKNOWN/JB: That depends on what is your definition of ‘in future’. Does it mean ‘near future’ or ‘distant future’?

  140. Dada,

Thanks again for answering my queries. Can you address following queries please?

    1. From your clarification on my previous queries it seems as long as IN keeps on changing requirements delays in signing off design and hence construction is inevitable. CDS/MoD perhaps should enforce IN to put this practice to rest forever.

    2. If IN does not bite the bullet for timely closure of design phase, roping in consultant perhaps will not help much although with past design and development experience of consultant will help minimize design/architecture related issues which itself is big plus.

3.Regarding localization of Brahmos do you mean all of booster, seeker, ramjet engine and canister (which were earlier supplied from Russia) have been replaced by indigenous counter parts?

    4. Are we still importing RLG-INS from IAI of Israel for Brahmos? If yes, any plan for indigenous version of the same?

    5. Is there any imported component in Brahmos at all? If yes, any plan for indigenous design and development of the same?

    6. On Nishant Agarwal (Brahmos Production Engineer who sold some secretes of Brahmos to Porkistan) from your response it appears he could not share any design related data of Brahmos. Perhaps he has leaked some production data likes of number of output, assembly line related information etc. Am I correct in my assumption?

    7. I was going through your blog (http://trishul-trident.blogspot.com/2013/11/naval-updates.html) which is a great read, thank you very much such a detailed analysis. However because of paucity of my knowledge I could not understand the the short-comings of CM-400AKG. Can you elaborate please?

  142. Dear Prasun,

    1. Modi government abrogated article 370 and 35A. Why are people criticizing the government saying that it doesn't impact the level of terrorism in Kashmir valleyvas it remains intact? Has government fallen short somewhere?

    2. Of course Musharraf was correct saying that Pakistan has inflicted thousand cuts on India as the shadow war of terrorism is still on since the last three decades. Of course minority community is radicalized who work as OGW or sleeper cells.

    3. Looking at the current scenario what's your say about a possible civil war in Pakistan? Is it imminent looking at the barbarity of Pakistan military.

    3. Why do USCIRF and UNHRC always take stand against India in religiosity issues and human rights issues despite knowing that there's too much minority appeasement. Further, why the world showed a blind eye to the exodus of Kashmir pandits. Why nobody listens to them despite Aarti Tikoo or anyone who presents the case in international discussion/ forum?

    4. Despite how much you criticize Modi government, I feel this government have spine to abolish article 370/35A, solving Ram mandir case which will bring harmony instead of dragging it, abolishing instant triple talak etc. few to mention. I think this government worked way better than UPA government. Your view please on a scale of 10 for both UPA and NDA.

  146. To RON: isn’t it all self-evident? What more explanation is reqd?

To RAJENDRA: That’s why no one remembers such entities anymore. They make & live in their own world of make-belief.

To AD: 1) Who will do it? Who will present a compelling argument for it? 3) Yes & they have been shown at all Aero India & DEFEXPO expos since 2013 itself. 4 & 5) Yes. They arrive in India in knocked-down condition. High-end production facilities do not exists as yet exist in India for such precision-engineered products. 6) No, not even that. In fact, he did not leak anything sensitive at all. Only ‘desi’ patrakaars’ engaged in rumour-mongering about it for assassinating his character. 7) As it is a supersonic missile, it cannot fly in sea-skimming mode & like BrahMos-1 has to engage in top-attack diving mode.

To RAD: It is the Kh-59MK. Taiwanese cellphone manufacturers have already set up production facilities in India. How else can Taiwanese citizens be evacuated by air from India? Boeing & Airbus Military are developing such UAS platforms as part of swarm air-attack tactics. Like what HAL is doing as part of the Jaguar-MAX project as shown at Aero India 2019. Russia has been supplying only the SGH seeker off-the-shelf & from this year that too will stop. Firstly, Su-30MKI & MiG-29UPG & MiG-29K have their own integral IRST sensors & don’t require anymore of them. Secondly, for any sensor to be integrated with a combat aircraft of foreign origin, the MIL-STD-1760A databus interface is reqd as it comes with OEM encryption. Hence, without the aircraft OEM’s cooperation, no new-generation avionics or weapons can be integrated. Only the tejas Mk.1/Mk/12A can seamlessly integrate because the MIL-1760A interface encryption is from ADA as is the flight-control system using MIL-STD-1553B digital databus (encrypted as well).

To ASD: 1) Because they have not yet realised that terrorism is now confined to only 3 district of southern Kashmir & not the entire J & K UT. 2) Those working as OGWs are FAR OUTNUMBERED by those working as informants for the J & K Police, RR & Indian Army. That’s the difference. 3) Of course they dco. Do read such reports & you will find that there are always dissenting presentations there as well. But in reports on Pakistan there is unanimity of opinion & no dissenting presentations exists in any report concerning Pakistan. You ought to take note of such finer details. 4) Both have more or less the less performance-levels. It is still too early to judge which of the two has faired better.

To AKS: The uprising in 1971 took place after growing since 1950. Likewise, for PoJK, the resentment levels began after 1973 & grew manifold after 1988. But the straw that will break the camel’s back will be the total collapse of Pakistan’s economy, which is widely expected to take place this September. That’s why the PA is anxious to roll back the 18th Amendment to Pakistan’s Constitution & bring back greater financial powers into the hands of the Federal Govt, as explained here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny2rgtNpZjA&t=2s
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPYgRdsVY6s&t=3s

And yesterday, within hours of India’s successful counter-terror operations inside the Kashmir Valley, IAKN had a meeting with the ISI’s DG:

Subsequently, this FAKE NEWS was released for all Pak-based TV channels:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a91kmcoCiWg

In realitry, the bodies are those of slain terrorists & not IA personnel.

To AMIT BISWAS: Such facilities are now being built at NAOP at Rambilli under project VARSHA. Such facilities have existed for long even in the USSR & today’s China. Here is an explanation of the PLAN’s submarine bases:

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/hisutton/2020/05/05/chinese-navy-submarines-are-protected-by-underground-tunnels/#778d9ab96312

Thanks again for answering my queries.

    1. As you confirmed all of booster, seeker, ramjet engine and canister of Brahmos have been indigenously designed and developed to replace their respective Russian peers, have we leveraged this knowledge in any other product for corresponding components?

  153. Dear Prasun,

I'm grateful to you for your far insight and logical response to my queries. I have few more:

    1. The grudge of the PoK residents is increasing as I read it from your response. If PA gives some financial independence, then India will be in backfoot as people will be tamed down in PoK. So what should be India's game plan? What India should do to ensure that PoK residents will feel India as the better option than Pakistan.

    2. Do you think that upgradation of Sukhoi-30MKI to Super Sukhoi will start this year assuming the effect of pandemic?

    3. Is IAF well equipped to deal with PLAAF in case of a high intensity war with Pakistan assuming the potential of J series fighters. They have quality as well as quantity. China may interfere so as to safeguard its interest in PoK.

    Please share your views.

    ReplyDelete
  154. To BUDDHA: It is an industrial accident due to human negligence. Periodic answers to CFVs are given by the IAF but what’s now reqd are joint fire-assaults by both the IA & IAF. The counter-infiltration grid is robust & effective, since most of the infiltrators have been localised & killed within a depth of only 10km from the LoC, meaning they were neutralised before they could even arrive at the Valley proper. What Afghan Army needs are helicopters like armed Mi-17V-5s & Mi-35Ps since the best way of ambushing land-mobile guerrilla bands are air-mobile/air-assault forces. As for the post-COVID-19 scenario, lots of data is being released every day & a detailed assessment is reqd for factoring in all arenas in a holistic manner, which will take some time to complete.

To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) There’s no divide. India will support whichever govt has the support of the Afghan people through their parliamentary representatives. 2) Qatar is only playing the role of a facilitator, not a mediator or arbiter. This is often misunderstood.

To AD: 1) Booster, ramjet engine, nosecone cap and cannister of BrahMos-1 were NEVER indigenously designed and developed. Their designs were given by Russia to DRDO & then DRDO passed them on to Indian industry for licensed-production. Only the X-band imaging monopulse seeker has been indigenously designed & developed. The booster, nosecone & cannister of BrahMos-1 is the same as those for the K-15 SLBM. 2) Yes, all of them are imported from the same source (IAI/TAMAM). The RLG-INS of Tejas Mk.1, Mk.1A, Su-30MKI, MiG-29UPG, MiG-29N, upgraded Mirage-2000N & Jaguar IS/DARIN-3 (SIGMA-95) is imported from SAFRAN/SAGEM of France, while the SIGMA-40 RLG-INS for the upgraded Type 877EKM SSKs & Scorpene SSKs is also imported from SAFRAN/SAGEM. The SIGMA-30 RLG-INS for the Dhanush-45, ATAGS & Pinaka-1/2 MBRLs is imported from SAFRAN/SAGEM as well. 3) Shit happens from time to time. 4) No. 5) Through Barak-8 LR-SAM of IN. 6) Outdated stuff. Astrophysicst stand against it was the problem there we can't study the heavenly bodies because the satellites are hiding the space so we can't study about astronomical movements. So Musk send like darksat method that means dark satellites. He successfully sends 422. This event look like ufo phenomenon the today's hot topic. Some People's think it's look like a satellite train because they sends that all continuously. Most people's believe it was a UFO but U.S government also approved that but they tells it's not a UFO it's a UAP (UNIDENTIFIED AERIAL PHENOMENON).

Ok now we talk about Musk doing this project. He says I will make our Internet connection 64times faster than optical fiber cables. It's simply called 5G.

Peoples are doing work from home and students attending online classes so all of us need a fast internet connection.

Bill Gates says we can destroy 16% people's population with vaccination. Bill Gates always want to reduce the world population. Vaccination will destroy our reproductive system.

Government will can't make the 5g project done if there is no lock-down also they can't vaccinate anyone. Next for digital Currency they are going to put Micro Chip in every human body. For that you need high speed internet.

Due to this quarantine agenda people's need a fast internet connection and vaccination for prevent from covid-19.

PROBLEM! REACTION! SOLUTION!.------ WORKING AND WORKED VERY WELL.

PROBLEM : The name called Corona.

REACTION: Peoples are doing work from home and student's studying with online classes so everyone need fastest internet connection. People's also wanna vaccination for prevent from corona.

To SHUKTANT CHATRATH: There have been developed-developed small arms of all types, but the end-users, particularly the IA, has always moved the goalposts by changing he GSQRs. This is similar to the IN always waiting for latest weapons for fitment on the hulls of warships being constructed by Indian shipyards, due to which the hull design never gets frozen. Whenever the IA has stuck to the GSQRs without any changes mid-way, the results have been very good, like the Pinaka MBRL & Dhanush-45 howitzer & ATAGS howitzer.

To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) Those are the Barak-8 LR-SAM for the IN & Barak-8ER LR-SAM for the IAF. 2) No, not yet. 3) It is the start of formalising & updating India’s claim. Here was the first IMD forecast on DD News:

    4) Russia has already done so by deporting all Chinese citizens in the Far East back to China’s Heilongjiang province. Consequently, there have been COVID-19 outbreaks in northern China’s Heilongjiang, Shaanxi & Liaoning provinces. 5) No, India won’t play any manipulative role in Afghanistan’s domestic politics. 6) 123 NMRHs comprise 2 types: 10-tonne & 12-tonne machines. The reqmt of 44 is for 10-tonne NMRHs. 7) India is only footing the bill for servicing the existing Afghan Mi-17s done by Belarus.

To ASD: CPEC was always a cover for other strategic activities, like the PN getting 8 Type 032/S-26T SSKs capable of launching SLCMs; & the PLAN getting overseas basing rights in Gwadar (just like it did in Djibouti). In economic terms, CPEC has totally failed since it is far cheaper to transport goods by sea from southern China to Karachi; & the Karakoram Highway in any case stays closed for almost 6 months every year due to bad weather conditions. But what is MOST DISTURBING is that India has still not stopped the supply of medicinal products & pharma-related chemicals to Pakistan, as revealed here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sEs6NWdbIk

And no one in India is even interested in reporting such news.

Also, do watch & listen to this:

And the US & Japan have begun joint efforts to get Taiwan re-admitted to WHO:

The MoD on May 8, 2020 inked the long pending Rs.1,200 crore deal with Tata Power SED (strategic electronics division) to progressively upgrade 37 airfields of IAF, Navy and Coast Guard with modern infrastructure and equipment to help fighter and aircraft operations in poor visibility and adverse weather conditions. This new contract is a follow-on of the Phase-I of the Modernization of Air Field Infrastructure (MAFI), under which 30 IAF air bases were earlier upgraded under a Rs 1,220 crore contract inked with Tata Power SED in March 2011.

I went through the link which showed Pakistan is still importing normal drugs apart from life saving drugs. But you described this news as disturbing. Is it sarcasm or I failed to understand it completely. It's advantage India. It shows why Indian drugs are need for Pakistan and the level of dependency Pakistan have over India. I think India could have reaped diplomatic a advantage of the same.

  168. How migrant labour mismanagement in the context of lockdown is going to hurt India ....
Both centre and stage level there is miscommunication with the labours and the migrants walking cycling to return to their homeland does not give a good picture..Many migrants died also .
This is really a criminal offence on both part of centre and states ..Specially centre could have arrange trains in the 2nd week of lockdown..
But both states and centre seem to pass the ball in other's court and get rid of responsibility...
Daily the plight of labour is very disturbing and painful . More sympathetic approach could have been implemented but everyone seems lacking the sound mind and shows callous heartless approach to the issue..
How you view this whole incident..

Does this change be helpful in bringing investment and industries to India. Or more drastic measures required from centre...
Jobless people returning from states to the native village and people overseas returning jobless ..How India can tackle this huge crisis and will emphasis be given to improve village or semirural structure and can more and more job related to agro industry and cottage industry be possible to establish..
How you see India is going to possible reguvinate from old sackle or plunging into utter chaos due to lack of sound socio political economical effort to sort out the issues.

  170. Prasun,

1- IN had a plan for having 24 subs by 2030. will that get impacted now?. did it include the SSN's & SSBN's or was it only for the conventional ones? what according to you should be IN's sub strength to maintain the leadership role in the indo pacific to thwart the Chinese & their client state . wud be great if you can give a braek of ssn's, ssbn's & conventional ones
2- why dosen't the IN opt for LPD's to be light aircraft carriers(like the turkish ones including F 35b) and drop its expensive wish for a 3rd aircraft carrier.. that way it will save a lot of money while simultaneously giving IN multiple carriers to match the chinese and also get multipurpose crafts.. these can be really large LPD's like teh america wasp or America class ones using the same hull structure as INS vikrant with necessary tweaks...
3- will the quad be expanded to include Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines Singapore & possibly malaysia? Almost all of them have been in confrontation with the chinese
4- Quality complains fron IA onOFB products.. time to give OFB's an ultimatum or is it the IA who is to blame for having unrealistic demands, shifting goalposts & poor purchase planning
5- You mentioned CDS not really making any significant diff till now, is it early days or plain incompetence or that the post lacks decision making powers and those still rest with the Mod babus?

I am not aware of the historical context of the borders in this region. I would hate to find out that we are behaving like a hegemonic power to undermine the interests of a friendly neighbouring country...especially when we object (rightfully) when China does anything illegal on our territory.

  172. To RON: This is a better example of hostage-rescue mission: OP Thunderbolt Singapore Airlines Flight 117 March 1991:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnDhiH0Dmfc&t=353s
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTrUC8ee6fo

In India, it needs to be understood that prior to 2009, the NSG’s mandate for such missions was limited to only the National capital Region & hence there were no SOPs for responding to any such crisis anywhere outside the NCR. Only after 26/11 was it decided to set up NSG hubs in major cities of India. And during the IC-814 hijack incident, there were other related operations that were undertaken within India, this being one of them:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJK7bHMznDY&t=444s

After that, till mid-2002, there were several sleeper cells that were eliminated through shootouts in major cities, with three of them being in Mumbai’s posh Pali Hill area itself.

To ASD: What is disturbing & surprising is why have the export of such substances to Pakistan not yet been banned by India. Taiwan regards India as a friendly country because prior to the emergence of the PRC, India used to have diplomatic relations with the RoC.

To BUDDHA: The woes of the migrant labourers has totally exposed the double-standards of India’s upper, upper-middle & lower middle-class communities of India. It will weigh heavily upon their consciences for a long time to come. Here are some highlights of the woes of migrant labourers:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mK-ro0xGfMs
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q98rO03oQMs
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSac2N_w0T8

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlByPoTqlNM
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6h_J4V4RRYE

Apart from hailing from the landlocked states of India where no heavy industries exist, the migrant workers are also now come from coastal states of WB (about 10 lakh) & Odisha. They tend to go to those states that are India’s breadbaskets, plus to those coastal states that are industrialised.

WRT labour laws, such laws have only added to industrial misery over the past several decades. Imagine that India made bonded labout illegal only back in 1975! Now, with the abandonment of the discredited labour laws, thed MSMEs will be free to recruit workers in far larger numbers.

To SUSAN: That’s not direct firing, because PA observation posts & bunkers are at a far lower altitude than those of the IA in most parts of the LoC. Had it been direct-firing, the barrles would have been at further depressed angles.

To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) It was inclusive of both SSKs & SSGNs & SSBNs. The IN ideally should have only 8 SSks & all the rest must be nuclear-powered. 2) The IN wanted LPDs after the December 2004 Tsunami, but the UPA-1/2 govts kept delaying the procurement by coming out with outrageous plans, such as importing two & licence-building two—one each by a private-sector shipyard & Vizag-based HSL. Clearly such cost-prohibitive exercises can’t make any headway. 3) Everything is possible. 4) The MoD is to be blamed, since it does not provide management autonomy to the DPSUs. 5) CDS’ role is limited since he is just acting in an advisory role & has no executive powers.

To KIDDO: Wrong, it is Nepal has not done its homework.

Looks like India is expecting serious to take place on May 11. Pak PM's IAKN's meeting with the ISI's DG within minutes of Naikoo being bumped off in Beighpura, Pulwama; and the consequent upgrading of the PAF's alert status & increased flight activities inside Pakistan; plus operational dispersion of the PA's sole LY-80E LOMADS MR-SAM Regiment in northern Punjab; and premature cries about India trying to stage a flase-flag operation all point to something in the offing tomorrow. The IAF's CAS too has not been seen on TV over the past 72 hours & the exclusion of C-17As & C-130J-30s from the 'Vande Bharat' emergency airlifts all seem to point toward to a heightened state of alert of the IAF. Let's wait & see what transpires next.

If indeed there is some major incident/action in the offing in Kashmir, could the latest confrontation with the PLA in Sikkim point to a co-ordinated effort to distract the Army from its plans/preparations in the Western Sector?

    https://theprint.in/defence/indian-chinese-soldiers-injured-in-sikkims-naku-la-after-exchanging-blows-stone-pelting/418201/

Could indicate a combined effort between between both our adversaries and if so it does not augur well for future confrontations.

Or is it typical Chinese bullishness and provocation like it has done with all the other countries as China anticipates a global backlash due to COVID - recent confrontation with Japan Vietnam Taiwan Indonesia Malaysia et al during the COVID outbreak could mean that its simply their way of warning and pressurising all neighbours against a possible backlash

  180. Dada,

Read few articles and watched couple of YouTube video ( one by Ex-RAW NK Sood) on conversion of Hindus to Christianity which can be summarized as follows.

    1. In Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Maharastra rampant conversions are going on of Dalit Hindus and ST to Christianity.

    2. This proselytization spree has thus far evangelized around 40% Dalit Hindu in Andhra Pradesh, 30% Dalit Hindu in Tamilnadu, 25% Dalit Hindu in Karnataka and 10% Dalit Hindu and 10% ST in Maharastra into Christianity.

    3. Palghar lynching of Hindu sages were orchestrated by Christian Missionaries employing converted STs because those Hindu saints were involved stonewalling this conversion drive.

Are above points true? If true, has there been any plan chalked out to stop and re-convert them back to Hinduism (Well, I agree that those Dalit Hindu and ST community for long has been tormented by upper caste Hindus and till date this mistreatment is going on unabated. That said, this nefarious design has to be paused and revered at any cost for the sake of national security)

  183. Dear Prasunji

Has Pakistan made a mistake of holding elections in GB region. Is there a blessing hand of China behind this move? Can India afford a two front limited war with both of them in that region? Or will China open a front in AP to help the momin army of pakistan? The killing of our officers in counter terrorism operations plays very well in the favour of Pakistanis. The jihad by all means to take back New Delhi as the Mughal capital is their long term goal it seems. Kashmir was just a pretense. Their main goal seems to recapture India as a country ruled by Islamic overlords like Mughal era. Ghazwa e hind is their final goal. Kerala...Assam...West Bengal...step by step. How can India reverse this? The inside implosion of India seems well planned in collusion with internal forces. Considering the statement by Sharjeel Imam to block the Siliguri corridor to choke India's operational capability vis a vis China.
    What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  188. To RAD: It is all about economies of scale. As more of anything is built, the per-unit cost comes down by 30%. Certain critical components like precision wiring & cabling will have to be imported but they can be indigenised with rising requirements over a 10-year period. XR-SAM will be like S-400, not S-300. It will have a Ka-band active seeker. Both SEF & AMCA will have to be shelved in favour of additional Rafales, MiG-29UPGs & Su-30MKIs. The IAF will NEVER procure IJTs, rest assured. I had already explained earlier how different types of interactive data-links will be reqd for creating a unified air-defence system, whose reqmt was first formally stated way back in the early 1970s after the 1971 war. What the CDS has done is only dust off those old files & put them back on the table again.

To KIDDO & BUDDHA: Most unlikely, because had it been a premediated plan, then the PLAGF would have resorted to an extended standoff like it had done in April 2013 in the Depsang Plains of Ladakh. As I have explained in the following thread, this is just a case of a jittery PLAGF getting over-anxious.

To SUSAN: The MLI is deployed in southern Kashmir in the Bhimber District’s Samanhi-Tatta Pani sector, where the IA’s Ops dominate those of the PA in terms of altitude, but are at close proximity to one another.

To ASHISH GAUTAM: The CDS was referring to fixed/static structures, like formation HQs, terror training camps like Jaba Top etc etc.

To AD: You are ASSUMING that the Dalits are Hindus. Actually, most of them are animists. That’s why I have always had reasons to believe that those who constitute idol-worshipping/ritual-observing ‘Hindus’ make up no more than 15% of India’s population.

To PRATAP: What for? Instead, plan for a retaliatory action in such a manner that it takes place within 3 hours of someone claiming responsibility, like Israel does. No need to wait for 1 or 2 weeks.

To JOYDEEP: The so-called elections are nothing else but to get rid of the existing local govt there that is now led by the PMLN & replace it with a PTI-led govt. Ghazwa-e-Hind gaved way a long time ago to Jasba-e-Hind, especially after 1971.

To JOYDEEP GHOSH: 1) The choice of May 11 for an attack coincides with the 17th day of Ramadan when the Battle of Badr was fought and won by a few hundred soldiers in Saudi Arabia. In Islamic history, it is seen as a huge victory in the early days of Islam and a turning point. It is also the 22nd anniversary of India’s second round of Pokhran nuclear tests in 1998 when India became a nuclear weapons state with a capability to deliver airborne and land-based nuclear devices. 2) It already does so for Ladakh. In Aksai Chin there’s no one living to receive such meteorological updates. 3) Not Fairchild Dornier, but Switzerland-based RUAG Aerospace. 4) Explained in the next thread. 5) Possibly so. 6) Where there’s a will, there’s always a way. 7) It will happen, rest assured.

To KAPIL: It is all explained here with absolute clarity by Dr Michael Pillsbury & you will never find such a clear-headed realist in India:
