BrahMos Industrial Eco-System

It has taken India 37 years to put in place a military-technical base for conducting R & D on various types of guided missiles and precision-guided munitions, and 23 years (starting from 1998) to create the related sustainable and proficient military-industrial base.

Tejas Mk.1A L-MRCA Updates
At least two Tejas Mk.1A LSPs will be required to undergo 24 months of flight-testing (starting this June) for loggong in the mandated 250 flight-hours, following which the L-MRCA will receive its certificate of airworthiness from CEMILAC. The first three SP-series Mk.1A L-MRCAs are due for delivery by late 2024, with the deliveries of all 83 Mk.1As (73 single-seaters and 10 tandem-seaters) being delivered by 2029 as per current projections.
Tejas Mk.2 Medium-Weight Fighter (MWF) Updates
This will be a medium-MRCA whose first flying LSP-series unit is scheduled for rollout in early 2023, followed by first-flight in 2024. The MWF being a brand-new design, a total of 2,000 hours of flght-testing will be required for attaining airworthiness certfication. Consequently, a minimum of three flying LSP-series aircraft will be required, along with a single aircraft for ground-based fatigue-tests. To date, GE Aero Engines has delivered 16 F-414INS6 turbofans, with deliveries beginning in September 2015.
The following taskings will have to be fulfilled as part of the flight-test programme.

The following poster explains the R & D efforts of GTRE that involve the usage of ceramic-metal composite (CMC) structures.
Finally, the AT-4CS-AST LAWs have been ordered for the Indian Army and Indian Air Force for replacing the Instalaza-supplied C-90 LAWs that were procured almost 20 years ago.

Came accross this in-depth and comprehensive analysis of the Russian build-up near Ukraine by Stanford University

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwrzophpNJA&ab_channel=CISACStanford

To my mind, there seem to be a lot of similarities between the Russian deployments and the manner in which the Chinese built-up at our borders in 2020. Perhaps you will agree that it is indeed so. Would really appreciate ur thoughts on this.

What lessons we can draw from this latest round of "Russian style coercive diplomacy" through a calibrated and escalating deployment of offensive firepower?
(Not getting into the complex reasons behind this crisis or making any judgements for or against Russia or Ukraine+NATO)

  14. To PAVAN: Neither Tejas Mk.1 nor Tejas Mk.1A will have on-board MAWS sensors. That’s why the previous CAS of the IAF had stated last year that such L-MRCAs will be used in combination with Super Su-30MKIs & Rafales equipped with MAWS sensors. As for Tejas Mk.2 MWF, the scale-models clearly show only 3 on-board MAWS fitments, when the reqmt is for 6 to ensure full hemispheric coverage. Hence, the MWF will have MAWS fitment architecture similar to that developed for the Super Su-30MKI, as shown in the following slides:

To DASHU: The location of the abduction, Bishing, borders Tibet’s Metog County, which is a very sensitive area as per the PLAGF. Consequently, China will return the abducted person after about 7 days from the date of abduction after a thorough interrogation.

To KUNAL: Russia is highly unlkely to attack Ukraine in the immediate future & will wait for the Beijing Winter Olympics to conclude. The Russian military build-up is still underway is not yet completed. Hence, hostilities ae unlikely for another 2 weeks. But interestingly, the US is now positioning 3 carrier battle groups in the Soujth China Sea, i.e. the USS Carl Vinson, USS Ronald Reagan & USS Abraham Lincoln. This indicates that China might try to take to take advantage of the Russia-Ukraine crisis & launch an invasion of Taiwan’s Pratas Island astride the Bashi Channel. For, since January 15, China has not despatched any PLAAF/PLAN combat aircraft into Taiwan’s ADIZ, choosing instead to send only turboprop-powered MR/ASW & SIGINT platforms. This may well mean that the PLAAF combat aircraft pilots are being given some rest in lieu of an impending high-intensity air campaign in the South China Sea.

To AVIATION: 2) No one banned any Igla-S imports. Imported procurement orders have merely been postponed. 3) Because it takes about 7 years for such a warship’s fitments to be completed. 4) Yes, for the Para-SF, Garud & MARCOS. 5) LoLz! No such radar exists. Typical delusional rants from internet fanboys. 6) No confirmed figures are available. 7) Totally indigenous. 8) Yes. 9) Yes. 10) No new developments.

To AVIATION: 1) LoLz! If he has said as much, then he deserves to be dismissed for incompetence, since all slides displayed so far by DARE, BEL & others all show that 6 MAWS fitments are reqd, i.e. front, rear, top, bottom, left & right:

Hence, instead of giving out such IDIOTIC soundbytes, the ADA Project Director should reveal: the per-hour direct operating cost of the MWF; maintenance man-hours per operating hour of the MWF; turnaround time on the ground of the MWF.

The image shown on page 13 is that of the X-band ground-mapping radar for the ISTR platform that does have secondary maritime search capabilities, but such a large antenna will not go on board the belly of any existing MPA like C-295 or Do-228. Hence, a smaller antenna is reqd like the one shown on page 21, but this is still another 6 years away from realisation. The Do-228s & ALHs now in delivery to the IN & ICGS cannot wait that lomg for receiving their search radars.

To VIKRAM GUHA: 1) The AT-4CS-AST LAWs ordered by India are meant for bunker-bursting by special operations forces, wheneas the NLAW is for anti-MBT engagement in urban built-up areas. In India’s case, future armoured manoeuvre warfare wll be conducted over plains-based agrarian & high-altitude desert plateau terrains, where NLAW-type weapons will be useless. 2) India-developed X-band imaging monopulse seeker & NAVIC GPS receiver.

To AMIT BISWAS: 1) Pressure-hulls built with titanium have greater diving depths, but they are horribly expensive. 2) The same as that of Germany, as candidly explained by the visiting Chief of the German Navy here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODmkoGQw1TU

Notice how the Indian panelists are DUMBSTRUCK by the candidness & articulation of thoughts of
Vice Admiral Kay-Achim Schonbach, because this unlike anything seen in India, where the in-service service chiefs are not accorded such a wide latitude when dispensing soundbytes. The previous 2 CNS’ of the IN were very shy of giving out detailed soundbytes, though the present CNS appears far more self-confident & articulate when giving on-the-record interviews.

  32. To KARNFLAKES, KAUSTAV, RAGHU & AMIT BISWAS: The German Vice Admiral was, perhaps, over-zealously, only echoing the inner thinking within Germany’s across-the-board political class & hence he revealed far too much. In reality, both Germany & Italy are almost totally dependent on Russia for energy security & they also realse that much of the crisis is due to Ukraine’s own unending political instability originating since the early 1990s.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0X3pKVOFqZc

To AMIT BISWAS: LoLz! The PLAAF must have panicked after my comment yesterday & decided to re-launch their combat aircraft for penetrating Taiwan’s ADIZ!

As for flight safety, all these retired veterans are mistakenly discussing SOPs that apply to fixed-wing aircraft, not helicopters. Thus, no one is focussing on the core issue, i.e. when will a time come when India’s armed forces will realse that the aircrews’ lives are priceless? As I had stated earlier, the IAF began service-inducting personal locator beacons for its pilots only by the late 1990s. Despite the IAF losing its first 2 An-32Bs over the Arabian Sea in 1986, it began service-inducting sea-survivable emergency locator beacons for its An-32s only in 2017. Presently, all the veterans are commenting on & proposing revised SOPs that will still not solve the problems related to low-visibility flight conditions. For instance, none of them are advocating the installation of terrain avoidance & traffic collision avoidance avionics on helicopters, perhaps assuming that this will be a cost-prohibitive option for a country that prefers to use non-customised ‘sanatani’ helicopters for VVIP flights. Well, the solution then is to reduce wasteful expenditure by reducing by half the time taken to commission homegrown warships.

In addition, it seems that senior retired military aviators are not exactly aware of similar CFIT incidents that had taken place in the past & what remedial measures were subsequently taken. Here is 1 such helicopter crash investigation report that I had highlighted last month:

    RAF Chinook Crash: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Giyw0p8EhL0&t=296s

To KAUSTAV: Taiwan’s national archives do not include all the stuff that was ferried from Nanking as part of Mainland China’s Imperal Treasures. Consequently, all that stuff, including treaties & related documentation, will remain locked-up & inaccessible at the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial in northern Taipei. Tibet-China historical records of consequence to India are all available from the UK-based archives.

To JUST_CURIOUS: Because of ground clearance issues, i.e. addition of a pylon interface containing MAWS on the underwing pylons will result in weapons loading limitations. In addition, there’s no internal room for accommodating MAWS sensors to the left, right, top & bottom.

To VENKY: That appears to be the case. Also, perhaps IA HQ was waiting for the availability of SANT ATGM.

  44. The German Navy Chief had to resign due to US pressure on Germany. As a premier NATO ally, the US would not allow break in ranks especially where strategic interest is concerned. The German vice admiral spoke the truth out even though most Germans and Europeans believe that to be the case but decide not to say anything. Ukrainian crisis is caused by these threefold issues:1) internal turmoil and political instability 2) Russian perception of its line of control and sphere of influence vs NATO/US expansionist agenda to never let another USSR rise in Europe by weakening Russia and leaving it reliant on the West 3) Political opportunism by Ukraine-play the Pakistani trick by playing the West against its brother slavs and diverting attention elsewhere instead of its own failure.

On another point- Pakistan does not get funds from the US. It channels funds borrowed from the IMF/World Bank, funnels funds raised by its cronies in the name of Islamic Charity and unlike India, gets everything given to them by China on a buy now pay never policy because with each defence item bought, China owns more of Pakistan which means even if there ever were a civilian government which is moderate and pro West, due to the huge debt burden will never be able to stay independent of China.

If I am not mistaken the IAF also seeks a 3D TVC on the AMCA due to which stealthy rearward exhausts might not be applicable. Barring the US there is little regard for an all-aspect stealth design. Why is this so?

But thank goodness, India will never mount a war due to lacking vital capabilities and will power; China will never attack Taiwan unless it has secured its financial position first by stealing all it can from the Western companies; Russia has never intended to attack Ukraine - the entire drama is a theatre played out between Nato and Russian Federation using unstable Ukraine as a pawn. This whole matter will come to an end soon with the NATO leaders claiming that they have scared off Russia, and Russia will claim their power prevailed with Ukraine divided up unofficially between Nato and Russia without ever joining anything.

    2) Neither Europe nor the US sees Russia as an existential threat.

    3) That’s why the US is not deploying combat forces inside Ukraine.

    4) Both Europe & the US remain fixated on China as the primary threat.

    5) A compromise will eventually be reached under which Ukraine become a member of the EU but as a non-NATO member-state.

To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) I don’t place any faith conspiracy theories about external powers trying to destabilise any Govt of India, especially since it is the often the GoI that creates problems fr itself by being unable to make optimum use of the information warfare domain. 2) The increase in the IN’s budget allocations & emphasis placed on local industrial sourcing clearly indicates that funds have started flowing for the construction of six SSNs, especially after the IN recently awarded the certificate of approval for DMR-292A/DMR-292B steel produced by Rourkela-based Alloy Steel Plant of SAIL. 3) Six additional P-8Is can be ordered later & now the priority is the procurement of additional Sea Guardian MALE-UAVs. As for C-295 procurement plans, obviously more than 56 units will have to be ordered & the ICGS will be reqd for procure about 12 of them & to add to this Alliance Ar too will order about 16 C-295s for civilian passenger transport for replacing the existing ATR-42s. 4) NASM-SR is meant for use by IN’s LUHs & hence long-range is not reqd. 5) The F-35s of both the USN & RN have recently entered the high-tempo operational flying stage & hence such at-sea crashes are only to be expected.

To SONGOFKALI: All missiles generally have 20-year lifespans, provided they are relifed after the first 10 years.

To JOYDEEP GHOSH: 1) That only goes to prove that the ‘desi’ TEDBF is a pipedream, especially in terms of the timeframes that it is reqd. If only the MWF’s critical design review has been completed by ADA, by when do you think similar review2s be completed for the AMCA & desi TEDBF? 2) I wouldn’t say so, since only one export customer has been confirmed. However, export prospects will be brighter for the projected BrahMos-NG, since it can be used by a wide variety of M-MRCAs & submarines.

  102. To SOUMYA RAY: It is a classic case of yellow journalism.

To THEINDIAN: It only goes on to prove that the BLA is now being supported by Iran, and that the Durand Line is fully lit up from north to south.

To VIKRAM GUHA: From the US, force multipler platforms will be sought, like additional Sea Guardian MALE-UAVs, P-8Is & ISTR sensors.

In addition, what is intriguing is that both the IAF & PLAAF are no longer showing their respective A-50I & KLJ-2000 AEW & CS platforms (all IL-76-based airframes) in flypasts for the past 2 years. I wonder if both the air forces are conserving their airframe lives.

To INDRAJIT & JUST_CURIOUS: CRPF won’t use the Ishapore Rifle Factory-built ‘Ghaatak’ SLRs in sub-zero temperatures & they will instead be used on the plains just like the Trichy Assault Rifle. The SIG-SAUER SLRs on the other hand are optimised for use under Arctic weather conditions.

To ABS: Low-observabilty matters only in the electromagnetic spectrum, i.e. when detection & tracking by radars is done. In the IIR spectrum, heat signatures cannot be neutralised 100% & hence optronic sensors are always reqd for SHORADS networks. 2) Yes.

To RAD: S-band surveillance over water is possible & has also be proven in both India & Sweden. However, for moving target tracking over ground, X-band sensors are reqd. Within elongated belly-mounted housings, separate S-band & X-band antennae can easily be accommodated for achieving multi-role ISTR capability. Directional X-band EW jamming can be achieved with AESA antenna. Su-30MKI can easily accommodate low-band, mid-band & high-band jamming pods as well as SIVA HADF pod to act in concert with NG-ARMs.

To KAUSTAV: This year may well prove to be momentous for India’s soft-power, i.e. COVID-19 vaccine diplomacy, since large-scale exports of various types of vaccines, tablets & ntra-nasal sprays will commence or have already commenced. This will put China in a tight spot, given the extremely low efficacy-levels of its homegrown vaccines. In addition, if the GoI succeeds in reviving its SEZs, then the relocation of global supply-chains to India may accelerate. Thus, the union bugget for FY 2022 can be replicated till FY 2024, then all-out efforts ought to be made to achieve an annual GDP growth rate of 13% instead of the projected 9%. Commencement of the SSN construction project is a welcome move & France is expected to help India with the high-enriched uranium fissile cores reqd for powering the proven Russa-design PWRs of the SSNs.

    1. During the security crisis of PM Modi, there was a photo of suit boot ki guard. Are such security personnel capable of performing well during adverse situation?

    2. How will the Russia Ukraine crisis is affecting India? What will be India's stand so as to maintain the friendship with Russia and Ukraine both?

    3. What's your view upon recent uproar on the Hamid Ansari issue who again tried to paint India as intellorant?

    4. How much score will you give the NDA Government in a scale of 1-10 during its tenure from 2019 to till date? Please assume all the parameters like education, Medical facilities, military, business, law and order, social security, infrastructure, reformation.

what band do the pak and chinese awacs operate?

does the elm -8222wb fullfill the muli band jamming capability or some thing else is needed.?
I am given to understand that L band is the preffered for land based radars for long range detection , then why has it not migrated to awacs?

can UHF aesa radar be fitted on a awacs for anti stealth capability as ground radars are?

I need some help. A lot of companies are heading to UAV manufacture for Defence sector as GoI has decided to have this handled by Indian pvt sector companies.

Amongst this a Haryana based Company (or rather companies) has spun off a number of units & is recruiting ex-faujis as operations heads or branch office heads. A buddy of mine has been approached for such a concern - CIRUS UNMANNED which has spun of a number of similar companies all privately held CIRUS BOATS/DEFENCE/UNMANNED etc within a year mostly Gurugram/Gurgaon Haryana based.

What is the potential of such startups or are they being started to explore the potential & then be sopd to ff or closed down. This company for instance has some experience in gensets which means CKD/SKD imports from PRC as most Indian back end or component companies have either closed down over the years or don't exist at all as it's cheaper oe easier to source from China. This is true across many industries from electronics of course, to even chemicals/APIs where India was once the principal supplier to PRC too.

Can you give some particulars oe antecedents as well as future potential about CIRUS UNMANNED / DEFENCE
/ BOATS etc. promoted by M/s Pushpa Yadav & Pankaj Kumar?!

As a defence geek,I personally feel that for Tejas, ensuring enhanced aircraft survivability by adding pylon based MAWS and IRST sensors far outweighs loss in weapon carrying ability on the outer pylons.
At the worst, we will not be able to use those 2 pylons for anything else. But Abhinandan episode shows us that in melee it is not always possible that other aircrafts would be able to provide necessary inputs to Tejas for evading IR seeker A2A missiles.

    Your thoughts on this please.

  115. To ASD: 1) Proximate security can at best provide only 20% shielding of the subject. I had already explained back in 2015 how the security protocols had totally broken down at Yelahanka AFS in February 2015 when the PM went to inaugurate the Aero India expo, when a breakdown of the X-ray baggage inspection systems at the base led to all the TV crews & broadcast journalists brushing past the hapless IAF personnel who were manning the x-ray machines & they all rushed towards the area where the PM was sitting & watching the opening day’s flypast. On that day, therefore, anyone with RPGs could have entered Yelehanka totally unhindered & succeeded in attacking the VVIP sitting concourse. And I can state with certainty that NOTHING HAS CHANGED till this day, as proven by several such subsequent events. Hence, in reality, VVIP security is only for show & display & achieves nothing in terms of the mandated functionality.

    3) It all boils down to the foundational disconnect between India’s obsolete colonial-era laid-down laws & the Constitution. This in turn WRONGLY leads many to assume that the constitutionally-mandated fundamental freedoms are absolute & open-ended, i.e. they do not realise that the freedoms are always accompanied by a parallel set of responsibilities & obligations that have to be accommodated. And that’s why even someone born in India can have his/her citizenship revoked because while obtaining a birth certificate is a birthright, obtaining citizenship, passport, driver’s licence, UID card etc etc are all PRIVLEGES bestowed by the Govt of India & hence such privileges can be withdrawn anytime. Non-realisation of all this is what has led to the Hijab conroversy.

    4) As a result of the above, I will give only 1 out of 10.

To RAD: 1) As I had stated several times before, development of hardware isn’t the challenge. It is the software algorthms that are the most challenging. 2) The Tejas Mk.2 is an all-new design & hence almost all components on-board will require re-engineering. Same goes for all the ground-based test-rigs. Finally, almost 52% of the critical components will still have to be imported. All this drives up the costs. 3) The slides I had uploaded earlier on the upgraded EL/L-8222 ASPJ clearly state the bandwidths that can be tackled. 4) Yes.

To KUNAL8888: Let’s wait & see if the RFP for the 114 MRFAs is floated. Most foreign OEMs are very sceptical about its floating.

To KAUSTAV: Generally, such companies act as country distributors for drones originating fom abroad. And such drones are used primarily for agricultural purposes, or for aerial mapping or for recreational purposes. As for military applications, a lot of such companies have sprung up over the past 3 years for catering to the reqmts of the ICGS & BSF’s marine wing.

To JUST_CURIOUS: This will only result in the per-unit cost of each off-the-shelf Rafale being reduced.

To CHANAKYA CHATTERJEE & ANUP: Nothing like that at all. By the large most of the questions are repetitive & had been answered several times before.

To NIKHIL M: The previous IAF CAS had already stated that Tejas Mk.1/Mk.1A will be used in combination with Rafales & Su-30MKIs.

To KAUSHIK: 1) Yes. Ducted pump-jet issue has not yet been decided. 2) This fiscal year. 3) Yes.

To JOYDEEP GHOSH: Everyone agrees that lighter MBTs are preferable, provided mobility & survivability are not sacrificed. That’s why even the Arjun Mk.2 built with HNS will be 8 tonnes lighter than Arjun Mk.1A. The reason why Russia opts for lighter MBTs is because: A) it does not possess airlift transporters like the C-17A Globemaster or A400M. B) Russia’s army does not have global expeditionary reqmts. But opting for lighter MBTs is not the same as opting for light MBTs, as several ‘desi patrakaars’ are WRONGLY assuming. For instance, China’s PLAGF did not deply even a single ZTQ-105 tank in eastern Ladakh. Instead, it was forced to deploy its ZTZ-99A MBT to counter the IA’s T-90S MBTs at Rechin La in late 2020.

  116. Russia Facing Difficulties in Supplying Airborne Radars:

Tikhomirov NIIP design bureau that produced the N035 radar has been working on an AESA model, the N036 Byelka. A small number of prototypes of such radars exist, but that the transmit/receive modules (TRM) in the active array itself were built with foreign, US-origin chips acquired through surreptitious channels. Russian defence firms rely almost entirely on a small number of suppliers for components, like the firm Istok, located in Frayzino outside Moscow. Unfortunately for the Russians, that company cannot come close to meeting demand.

An Ukrainian woman interviewed on Australian TV said something very correct: had Russia developed its economy like China then its coercive tactics would have worked. Without any financial clout, just military posturing will not lead anywhere especially additional US sanctions would further cripple its economy. She said on ground no Ukrainian believes Russia will invade. I guess it is this lack of funding for R&D that is stopping them from building a C-17 type aircraft. Mind you if they can build MC-21 not much different to building a larger airframe....or is it.

  121. @ Prasoon..citizenship of "naturalised citizens" can be withdrawn by the Central Government, however citizenship of "citizens by birth" or "natural born" citizens cannot be withdrawn by the central government. These natural born citizens can only voluntarily give up their citizenship but the state has no power to withdraw their citizenship for reasons whatsoever. The latter are the citizens who create the maximum nuisance..what can be done is that fundamental rights can be restricted like restricting free speech, witdrawing right to vote etc. As an example, the central government can put reasonable restrictions on media, journalists and their works that peddle fake news. this area is yet to mature and the state is too timid as it will result in massive protests by political leaders resulting in chakka jam, road blocks etc. Any kind of crackdown would only embarrass the government, result in international condemnation, human rights violation allegations etc. This is the modern day cost of having a quasi democracy, where no political leader wants to look cracking down on his own citizens to whom he later begs for votes. Democracy is hostage to its own voters, the more amassed they are, the more helpless the government gets.

  126. The new labour codes released in 2020 haven't been put into State Factory rules it, will probably never get there. Gujarat already has that before the labour code. Modi & Shah will probably not be able to do anything at the Centre anymore. It's upto the states. Some are more business friendly, Gujarat always has been. One of the reasons Maharashtra has lost it's industrial pre-eminence as well as industrial projects to Gujarat. States like West Bengal have already lost out though blessed with advantages & opportunities because of lack of commercial sense, freight equalization & good old lazy socialism. There is nepotism in SoKo & Japan too. Humans & electoral democracies work through networks. Freebies, vote banks & socialism create de-industrialisation, encourage flight of capital & discourage enterprise. Nepotism - you don't get it yet, do you?!

  127. Hello sir,
In your article you mentioned SAAW (smart anti Airfield Weapon) speciation as DEW (direct energy weapon).
"it can eliminate a hierarchical air-defence network’s effectiveness by destroying the electronics within it alone, via a microwave pulse, without kinetically attacking the network itself. With an internal active phased-array microwave emitter, that will emit bursts of selective high-frequency radio wave strikes against up to six different targets (like PSS sensors and ground-based EW jammers) during a single mission. The EMP-like field that will be generated will shut down all hostile electronics."

You are the only one claiming the Non-kinematic attack ability of SAAW.
Why others not specifying SAAW as DEW? (But, just as a PGM with Inertial Navigation and EO/IIR seeker?)

  130. To JUST_CURIOUS: It is just a personal hypothesis from an internet fanboy. Separate jamming pods for low-band, mid-band & high-band spectrums are reqd for escort jamming platforms that are reqd to have long endurance & that’s why the PLAAF has fielded the J-16D with multiple jamming pods, not the J-10. Similarly, the IAF’s platforms capable of undertaking escort jamming sorties will be the Su-30MKI & Rafale, not any variant of Tejas.

To RAD: India always has the option of procuring the INTEL processors & sending them to Russia for incorporation on to the Russia-origin AESA-MMRs meant for installation on the Super Su-30MKI. After all, such installation work will be done in India, with only systems integration work being done in Russia. The US sanctions apply to Russia-operated airborne platforms only.

To ANUP & KAUSTAV: Since the C-295s will only be assembled by TATA in India, it makes sense to set up a final integration in Gujarat as the aircraft in semi-knocked-down condition will arrive by sea from Airbus Military’s Spain-based facility from the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal.

To UNKNOWN: Perhaps because the internet fanboys on whom you rely for information totally missed the presentation given by Dr V K Saraswat at a seminar held during the Aero India 2013 expo where he revealed that air-launched DEWs were being developed.

Much as the present incumbents denigrate Economist Mr.Raghuram Rajan, he does have a point that manufacturing in India is very difficult due to land acquisition problems as well as reduced pay for low-cost operations in combination with shortage of necessary skill-sets. While Gujarat & some other states might have addressed some of these issues to an extent with migrant labour & skilling, there is most certainly a problem in a democracy on the long run. While India needs manufacturing but it also means, India needs to move up the supply chain, introduce automation & jave strong delivery focus on Services & Service Industry in general. While not denigrating the role of manufacturing industry & smokestacks, India might have to upskill fast on Technical Skills needed for a viable hi-tech Service Industry as well as invest in automation & AI both for Manufacturing & Services. Not thinking out of the box or simply copying the Chinese are luxuries, India cant afford.

Ask me or the thousands like me who run companies that employ between 50 to 500 employees and they will all day the biggest problem is politically funded and motivated unionism ... Employers make money only and only on successful delivery and employees want to pe paid for turning up at work and delivering a fraction of their deliverables ... If u pay them by their deliverable then get ready to face Siv sena or MNS or rastravaadi or citu or intuc or what not ... Anpadh gawaar political goons who will do all forms of vandalism and goondagardi ... I guess the only solution is CONTRACT EMPLOYMENT ...

Car mechanics and plumbers are still unqualified guys learning things off the back street from someone else with no real technical idea. What needs to happen is polytechnic type institutes need to spring up with a massive government funding to take non academic students off University path - pay for their education and create structured apprenticeships. All Western countries do this and have a large number of skilled workers. Indian spending is only focused on defence - welfare, medical and education as well as aged care all get no mention. Remember, defence is not just military but a strong, skilled work force and health populace as well.

  144. To RAD: The SEAD variant of the Su-30MKI will contain 3 different DARE-developed pods (not Israeli), 2 wingtip-mounted & 1 underwing-mounted. Each such pod will be bandwidth-specific, i.e. one covering low-band (D/E band, previously L-band), other covering mid-band (Ku & Ka bands) & the third covering the high-band arena (S-band & X-band). But since this configuration will make the Su-30MKI non-agile, self-protection becomes imperative & hence such Su-30MKIs will be reqd to be fitted with six MAWS sensors, six laser-warning sensors & six radar-warning sensors to ensure full 360-degree hemispheric coverage. Such Su-30MKIs, which will also be armed with up to four Rudram-1 NG-ARMs, will be escorting Tejas Mk.1 & Jaguar IS/DARIN-3 platforms on tactical interdiction sorties. However, the Tejas Mk.1s Tejas Mk.1As & Jaguar IS/DARIN-3s will still be reqd to carry EL/L-8222 ASPJs that are now likely to be upgraded to cover the low-band & high-band bandwidths, as explained in these 2 slides:

    https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sUbTucVpXz4/WGlE2d9mRhI/AAAAAAAAMJ8/2lhEtjvNpvcnvW9xAoHvigXk-tggsVzJACLcB/s1600/ELL-8222%2BASPJ-1.jpg

SAAW is presently a gliding PGM but in future micro-turbojets that are on offer from the Czech Republic as well as from the Kalyani Group will be powering them. SAAW cannot carry deep-penetration warheads & hence the ‘TARA’ gliding variant of SAAW equipped with dual navigational sensors (GPS-enabled fibre-optic gyro for en route navigation) & optronic sensor for terminal guidance) will be used for penetrating the HAS.

The PLAGF is presently building permanent garrison quarters & related underground armament storage depots at distances 70km away from the LAC. Such garrisons can only house rapid-deployment defensive formations, not offensive manoeuvre formations. In other words, the PLAGF is now doing what the IA & ITBP have been doing since 2014, i.e. the PLAGF are late-starters. As for operational proficiency, the PLAGF & PLAAF are perhaps the only ones in the world to construct permanent sites for MR-SAMs & LR-SAMs, i.e. they have no expertise for constructing such sites at short notice under dynamic battlefield conditions. The Indians & Russians on the other hand excel in building such sites at short notice, thereby exploiting the tactical mobility of MR-SAMs & LR-SAMs. This is a classic case of the inexperience of PLAGF & PLAAF in devising an effective air-defence network.

As elections in Uttar Pradesh (UP) move eastwards, ‘awara pashu’ or stray cattle is becoming increasingly potent an issue much to the discomfiture of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The reason is simple: West UP is predominantly a buffalo belt, whereas the population of cattle–the cow and its progeny–rises as one goes east. Thus, buffalo numbers in Agra (10.67 lakh), Bulandshahr (9.72 lakh) and Aligarh (9.42 lakh), as per the Livestock Census for 2019, far exceeded that of cattle–at 2.83 lakh, 3.04 lakh and 3.11 lakh, respectively–for these three districts. It’s the other way round, with more cattle than buffaloes, in Gorakhpur (2.87 lakh versus 2.53 lakh), Deoria (2.88 lakh vs. 1.91 lakh) and Mirzapur (5.11 lakh vs. 2.88 lakh). Crop damage by stray cattle wasn’t a major problem in the pre-Yogi government period, as the ban on slaughter was largely on paper. But as the number of strays–bulls, male calves and non-milking cows let loose by farmers themselves–have multiplied over time, its political fallout could well be more in the eastern ‘cow’ than the western ‘buffalo’ belt. The UP government is paying Rs.30 a day for every animal housed in gaushalas. The Gau Ashray Kendra at Maijapur in Colonelganj, which was opened in August 2020, has 57 female and 45 male cattle. An average animal, even if unproductive, needs to be given about 5kg of bhusa (wheat straw) and 1kg of either whole flour, cattlefeed, rice polish or mustard oilcake. The delivered cost of bhusa and polish is currently around Rs16/kg, while Rs22 for flour, Rs24 for cattlefeed and Rs40-42 for oilcake.

A close friend of mine working in a very sensitive job with friends in high places has heard that before the attack, Putin did a deal with China for a full backing in the form of any comments or action internationally, guaranteed supply of military hardware, ToT and silence when China moves against Taiwan as well as India. The greatest geopolitical mistake of Bharat was letting the Turks convert away from Sanatana dharma (see turk shahi and white hunas turks for sanatani turks). Similar mistake must not be repeated for Slavic peoples. Government must win the hearts and minds of people. Then as many people as possible will revert to true belief Sanatana dharma. 800 years of humiliation could have been prevented if Turks remained as Sanatanis and fought on the side of dharma.

  156. 1) Sir, how will the conflict affect our defense purchases and preparedness? Possibly USA doubling down on CAATSA and sanctions, Russia in general being unable to supply weapons, Ukrainian military industrial complex gets decimated or India in general shies away from ordering Russian and american weapons.

    2) What is the big plan for IAF to recapitalize jets. 36/114 rafale all sound good but there is no open movement or discussion. Rafale production line is locked up till 2026 atleast.
Any new jets will come with standard 2 years of contract negotiation plus 3 year for first delivery.
Extra Su30 may not come by easy now.
Meanwhile IAF says they are still setting RFI for MRFA. Is there absolutely no alarm bells ringing in administration?

    3) possible to upgrade some of our freed up HS748 into various EW aircrafts? Someone said They may have adequate airframe life remaining.

    4) Pakistanis got used paladins from Italy. They probably operate nearly 500+ SPH and soon 236 MGS. We have a line idle at L&T while we needed some 400 more of k9, none ordered yet we had 6 billion unused budget this fiscal. Same goes for 155 MGS trials of kalyani, dhanush mgs and MARG. Stuck in limbo like ATAGS and towed dhanush.

    5) can Li batteries be installed on any sub? If we fully overhaul a kilo class body and replace Lead acid batteries will that solve explosive gas accumulation, so can their service life be extended by 15 more years to 50+?

I am asking because P75I is equally stuck like MMRCA/MRFA program and any new sub will take 10 years to arrive as we retire 6 kilo and 4 type209 subs. Ideal 6-9 scorpenes OR Arihant class ssgn with brahmos should have been ordered.

    Thanks in advance.

  160. To AMIT BISWAS: Supplies will continue unhindered from Russia just as GAZPROM continues to supply gas to Europe, especially to Germany & Italy. That’s why no one has so far halted the Brussels-HQed SWIFT electronic payment transfer mechanism for Russia, even though Russia has put in place its own counterpart of SWIFT for electronic banking processes.

To NIRMAL C HALDAR: India is in no position to make value judgements on Russia’s military kinetic actions against Ukraine simply because what Russia is doing today, had been done by India in both Goa & Hyderabad back in the late 1950s & early 1960s. Nor will it be that easy for China to make any move against Taiwan since the former still lacks the decisive military superiority reqd for achieving the desired objectives. And to gain a better understanding of Russia’s objectives, this provides some pointers:

    https://indianexpress.com/article/india/ukraine-russia-crisis-russian-interview-7789421/

To NIKHIL M: Kindly rest assured that Pakistan will go for the Shenyang FC-35 ‘Gryfalcon’ stealthy twin-engined MRCA, and not any other new-generation MRCA.

To SATYAKI: 1) Not that long, but within the next 72 hours Ukraine will militarily collapse. 2) No such possibility. 3) All military supplies from Russia to countries like India & Vietnam will continue unhindered. For, as I had explained above, Europe itself is deeply divided over sanctioning Russia as European countries themselves are heavily dependent on Russian gas supplies from Russia. That’s why the SWIFT mechanism has not yet been denied to Russia. SWIFT will be denied ONLY IF Russia decides to discontinue gas supplies to Europe.

From my prism, I see Ukraine as a global migraine due to its uncontrolled proliferation of critical military technologies over the past 30 years. The principal beneficiaries of such acts have been China & Pakistan. 80% of the PA’s night-vision devices & thermal imagers have been supplied by Ukraine, while all missile cannisterisation technologies now possessed by China have come from Ukraine. I had extensively detailed all such ToT from Ukraine in a 3-part article that was published by FORCE magazine in November 2021, December 2021 & January 2022.

I very doubt if Lord Krishna will be interested in brokering peace, but NaMo can give it a try by inviting the Presidents of Russia & Ukraine to Varanasi where the trio can do some ‘Aastha ka Dubkis’ (plunge of the blindly faithful) on the polluted waters along the river-banks while praying for world peace. Whether the two Presidents will share such ‘Aastha’ is another matter altogether.

To DUTTA & KUNAL: VMT indeed.

To PRASH: LoLz! Over the past 30 years, Ukraine has supplied lethal weapons that were & are being used in each & every civil war now underway in Africa & the Arabian peninsula. Kiev also falsely believed that the EU will solidly support it, but as we now see, Europe is deeply divided over this issue. Ukraine’s air force & navy are so dilapidated that they can be destroyed within 24 hours. That’s why Russia has so far fired only 160 Kalibre cruise missiles against Ukraine’s air bases, when it now known that the US had to fire 69 cruise missiles against a well-defended air base in Syria to knock that air base out of action. Also noteworthy is the Russian employment of helicopters for massed vertical envelopment air-assault operations, with Ka-52s escorting the Mi-17s.

To VSJ: 1) There won’t be any severe affects due to the reasons I’ve given above. 2) There’s no hurry, as the 36 Rafales will be used by the IAF for devising new tactics, which in any case will be a 3-year effort. 3) For such roles, bizjets or even regional airliner airframes like EMB-145 will serve a better purpose. 5) Yes, that’s possible.

To BUDDHA: All military supplies from Russia to countries like India & Vietnam will continue unhindered.

It's like every woman I see I believe I would make a better partner than the one she has and try to knock them off! (not really just using an example) America and especially the English speaking countries believe they SHOULD be seen as James Bond fighting villains around the world for freedom and peace. 176. To RON: The West did initiate criminal proceedings against Ukraine, but in a half-hearted manner in the first decade of this century. But greater priority was at that time being accorded by the West to ‘democratising’ China. Only when the latter did not produce any results & had utterly failed by 2014 did the West start imposing greater strictures on Ukraine, leading to its financial meltdown & internal economic & administrative chaos.

To SATYAKI: The terrain conditions are totally different as I have been explaining for the past 2 years, China’s PLAGF cannot launch a full-scale conventional assault against India anywhere along the LAC. As for Pakistan, its economic condition does not allow for even a limited conventional offensive campaign to be launched.

To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) Yes, but Russia being what it is, counter-plans & efforts are always catered for. 2) Not a churn, but realpolitik. 3) The TERMA pylon-mounted MAWS is ideal for Su-30MKI, but not for Tejas Mk.1/Mk/1A. 4) Both North Korea & Iran were excluded from SWIFT a long time ago.

To SASI: 1) Of course there will be. It will be a long-lasting negative effect. 2) All. 3) Depends on whether or not Russia spares Zorya Mashproekt’s facilities from bombardment. 4) Unlikely. 5) Let’s see when exactly US-based oil/gas giants exit from Russia & when Germany, Italy, the UK & France begin renouncing the supply of Russian oil/gas.

To ANUP: Yes, it is FAKE NEWS.

To BUDDHA: Yes, there is & that’s why Russia’s heliborne special operations forces’ topmost priority was to secure Chernobyl & other nuclear waste recycling/fissile materials storage facilities in Ukraine, so that dirty IEDs cannot be made. In addition, Russia moved in at lightning speed from the south to capture all the Ukrainian naval bases to the south so that supplies of weapons like ATGMs & MANPADS cannot arrive from the EU. Russia’s strategy now is to surround & isolate all major Ukrainian cities elsewhere, especially the industrialised ones, so that they cannot enable the sustainment of the war effort.

To ASD: VMT. As I had stated earlier, Russia has already put in place its own counterpart of SWIFT, i.e. System for Transfer of Financial Messages (SPFS).

To SHANTYLAL: Russia’s strategy is to surround & isolate all major Ukrainian cities elsewhere, especially the industrialised ones, so that they cannot enable the sustainment of the war effort.

To KANE1966: The deal has been temporarily deferred, not cancelled.

    To AMIT BISWAS: Yes.

  177. Hi Prasun,

I would be interested to hear your take on this subject: the reports out of Ukraine in all the Western press outlets re. "thousands of Russian dead" and "Russian advance halted/stymied", "Russians are incompetent" etc.

I have strong suspicions that these reports are all bogus propaganda, even if it is true that the Russians are encountering greater difficulties in the advance than they anticipated. This business about "Russia defeated by brave Ukranians" strikes me as pure bullsh|t. Your thoughts?

On a somewhat related note, I believe it is time for India to start slowly but surely divesting itself from dependence on Russian weapons/systems. Again, your thoughts?
