PLA Navy's Bastion At Hainan Island

The PLA Navy’s (PLAN) South Sea Fleet component of the PLA’s Southern Theatre Command at Hainan Island, which is to the immediate north of the South China Sea, is being equipped with a string of new shore-based establishments to add to the existing sprawling naval bases at Yulin and Longpo, located in the southeastern portion of Hainan.

Lingshui Air Base

The PLAN’s largest air base, located at Lingshui, which already hosts KJ-500 AEW & CS and KQ-200 MRMR-ASW platforms, is now all set to receive a permanent detachment of at least 12 J-15 H-MRCAs, which in turn indicates that the Shandong CV-17 aircraft carrier will be permanently homeported at Yulin naval base, where a massive dry-dock capable of undertaking periodic servicing of aircraft carriers has been built.

Dry-Dock at Yulin

In addition, dedicated air bases for UAVs and heliports for various types of helicopters have also come up.

  2. Dear Prasun,
Can the Rafale alone help India dominate China? How Rafale fares against Chinese crafts in similar and dissimilar airfare?

  3. To AMIT BISWAS: It is the 'Taklu' at Union MHA who is not doing his job, and not anyone else, because immigration matters are controlled by Union MHA. Unless anyone can prove that this China national entered illegally (which is most unlikely) from Bangladesh or Nepal via land, but there again the IBs with Nepal & Bangladesh are guarded & patrolled by the SSB & BSF--both Central CAPFs.

To ASD: Why Rafale alone? What about the upgraded Jaguar IS/DARIN-3--both of which have AESA-MMRs? Does any PLAAF-operated combat aircraft have AESA-MMRs?

It is quite disheartening or seems cruel joke for me keeping DRDO in the FMBT/FRCV's RFI List. Does IA/MoD wants DRDO for JV with foreign countries ? I fear the experienced OEMs may easily outgun DRDO. Why did not they(IA/MoD) better go for co development, instead issuing RFI ?

    HMT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvWTjNrjWhk

To SUMANTA NAG: As I had explained back in 2016 itself, there’s plenty that can be done by modifying existing T-55 & Vijayanta MBTs by re-engining them, re-armouring them & re-equipping them with new turrets containing different types of weapons for anti-armour, anti-personnel, direct/indirect fire-support & air-defence. By allowing them to just rot away or be sold as scrap materials will be a criminal waste of precious resources. But for all this to happen, the IA & even IAF must spell out what the future battlefields are most likely to be & what’s required for operating in them. There seems to be no clarity on this point & hence Indian industry cannot be engaged for developing innovative & cost-effective solutions. This is a huge, vast untapped area that needs urgent exploitation. For example, while 120mm Penetration Cum Blast (PCB) AND Thermobaric (TB) rounds have been developed for the Arjun family of MBTs, anti-personnel rounds (APAM) have not yet been developed for unknown reasons:

  16. To BHOUTIK: It was a very serious breakdown of discipline. Anyway, the passing-out parade concluded earlier this morning. The Tajiks are tough people, like the rest of the Central Asians. In ancient times, Bhishma's Kuru Kingdom had its capital city in what is today Afghanistan's Balkh Town.

To ASD: LoLz! The US was of course referring to Hawaala, Hundi, etc etc. On another note:

The Indian Army has bought 17 flat-bottomed boats, the majority of them to be deployed at the Pangong Tso in eastern Ladakh for rapid deployment of troops in case of contingencies. The boats are being procured from Goa-based Aquarius Shipyard Pvt Ltd, the shipyard that built the sailing vessel Thuriya on which Indian Navy’s Commander Abhilash Tomy embarked on the prestigious Golden Globe race from France in 2018. Similar boats are already in service with the Indian Navy. The delivery of the first few boats has already begun and is set to be completed by September. A majority of them will be inducted in eastern Ladakh for now. The rest could be deployed at other locations, as and when required. The boats, measuring 35 feet in length, will have the capacity to carry about 20-22 people, including crew. They can move at a speed of 20 Knots, which is approximately 37kph. While the boats have not been fitted with any weapons at present, they could be equipped with light weapons when needed in the future. Made of fibreglass, they would ferry troops across the Lake, cutting short earlier time lost while navigating the hilly tracks around the Lake. Last January, the Army had finalised the procurement of 12 high-performance patrol boats to enhance its surveillance of the Pangong Tso Lake and other large water bodies in eastern Ladakh. The contract for these 12 patrol boats was inked with Goa Shipyard Ltd, a state-run public sector undertaking, with deliveries set to begin by May this year. Troop-carrying-boats would be used to move troops and equipment and deploy them on the Lake bank in a faster time frame, either to reinforce existing troops there or for fresh deployments. This is an advantage since traversing along the roads and tracks on the periphery of the Lake takes much more time due to terrain friction.

1-weren't assault boats te reqmt for Pangong Tso? similar to Saab CB90 with anti ramming protection .. do the ones ordered have these feature & why are the ones being brought not armed ? are the chinks been reading gandhi a lot & are taking up ahmisa?

  21. To RAGHU: Though the TF’s latest issue explains everything about the AEW & CS project involving four-antennae AESA radars encased inside radomes, it should have explained in greater detail the systems architecture meant for the 6 A320s.

As for the Indian MoD’s decision, perhaps it reacted to my comment made on June 3, 2021 at 6:33AM.

To VENKY: Orders for more Rafales from Egypt, plus the orders from Greece & Croatia (for pre-owned Rafales) will keep the Rafale production line busy for the next 36 months, during which any follow-on orders from the IAF will be able to be accommodated at lower acquisition costs.

To JUST_CURIOUS: Both orders are from the IA & are meant for deployment in Panggong Tso. The LCVPs are also being used in India’s offshore island-chains. LCVPs are utility vessels, not assault vessels.

  26. Dear Prasun,

Having carried out too many discussions with you regarding Indo China war like scenario, I conclude that there will be stalemate. And a stalemate will be a moral loss for China. However can India stop the dadagiri of China and take back the lost lands which it lost inch by inch?

How can a country with self-respect, digest to lose inch by inch despite having all the valid proof of boundaries documents???? What's the reason for this impotence? Is it anti-national political leadership? Please share your views.

  27. To SANTOSH: You should refrain from asking how good it is or how bad it is, because it is a given that once the end-user accepts the system & inducts it into service, it means the system is capable of being used with success on the battlefield. Details of this system were uploaded way back here:

    http://trishul-trident.blogspot.com/2018/09/pgms-being-developed-by-drdo.html

To CHINTAN: Here are the details:

While Raytheon is helping CABS develop the ground target recognition algorithms, the GIS-based digital topographic & terrain database & grid-map of hostile territories is being created by the DRDO.

To ASD: The reasons are lack of political will, lack of self-esteem among India’s political decision-makers & a lack of historical appreciation, speaking of which, here are some interesting videos of the Dogra Gen Zorawar Singh Kahluria:
