The PA’s QW-18 and FN-16 MANPADS are designed to intercept low altitude and ultra-low-altitude airborne targets like attack helicopters, low-flying aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) under visual conditions. But most of these systems are handicapped by defective surface-to-air night aiming sights and IFF transponders. Without these, the MANPADS are literally blind. As many 850 FN-16s (out of the 16 launchers and 1,265 missiles procured) have been declared non-functional by the PA. The Chinese OEM, Wuhan Infrared Co Ltd, instead of quickly replacing or repairing the malfunctioning components, has instead appointed an allied firm, Valiant Technologies, to sort out the mess. Equally serious problems afflict 200 QW-18 MANPADS launchers (along with 1,391 missiles) imported from China Precision Machinery Import-Export Corp (CPMIEC) in 2016. Numerous deficiencies were found during biennial functional testing of both these MANPADS at the Army Base Workshops since July 2019. The PA has asked CPMIEC to replace at least 47 of them along with one base control unit and one training simulator. The story of the 300mm A-100E multiple launch artillery systems is quite similar. Manufactured by the state-run Aerospace Long-March International Trade Co (ALIT), the A-100E, incidentally rejected by the PLAGF, was procured by the PA (two Regiments, or 36 launchers) but during various field trials, the PA found the A-100E wanting in many respects. ALIT was apprised of these problems and asked for immediate repair replacement. The representative of ALIT, after a detailed examination, concluded that the defective MLRS had to be replaced as they were beyond repairs.

ReplyDeleteIs it true that chicom deployed S-400 to protect Beijing? They dont trust their own HQ-9?
How does the induction of these systems affect any future surgical strikes by IAF?
ReplyDeleteAlso please compare fd-2000 with Indian equivalent(mrsam).
Overall it seems India is on the Blackfoot with regards to our land borders with Pakistan and China.. it totally looks like we are playing defensive a lot more than usual ..
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think prasun da ?
Dear Sir,
ReplyDeleteI have a query from you that if we compare INAC Vikramaditya with Chinese Navy LIONING carrier, then how good is VD from the latter, because both of them are of Russian origin. Don't you think that Chinese have mastered the art of NAC construction within relatively short period of time at relative low cost. And second question is that if India Navy had ever considered of procuring the French Mistral ships which were being built for Russian navy but its delivery was cancelled due to Russian intervention in Syria & Crimea. Ultimately Egyptian's had those ships.

ReplyDeleteYour thread answered one question I had in mind after some media reports mentioned Pak Liaison officers at PLA:
Western Theatre Command
Joint Staff Department
Pak Embassy
Southern Theatre Command
I was wondering what were the Pakistanis doing at STC which is responsible for South China Sea but now I know the reason- Training for HQ-9.
Thanks

To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) The HQ-9/FD-2000 being an LR-SAM will be useless against low-flying deep-strike M-MRCAs & tactical interdictors. 2) President Putin has already pre-empted matters by stating that China does not need to attack Taiwan by military means, as revealed here:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M82E3WYjXgk
3) The truth is revealed here: Imran-Bajwa Tiff:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdoGTKmvGs0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNnDs9kD6j0
6) Here’s the explanation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_80e5YpiTo
To SARATHI97: Around Beijing there are S-400s, HQ-9s & HQ-22s.
To SANJEEV: LR-SAMs of any type are ineffective against low-flying H-MRCAs, M-MRCAs & L-MRCAs since they can engage in terrain-masking flight-profiles that prevent any ground-based SAM network’s target acquisition/engagement radars from detecting/tracking such airborne platforms. And as I had explained earlier, the most effective SAMs over flat terrain (like in India & Pakistan) are SHORADS & E-SHORADS.
To KARNFLAKES: You will find the answer in my reply to KUNAL later today, who had raised a similar query.
Galwan River-Valley Clash Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZDhiUMIQo4
To PRAKSH: Within the WTC, both the PA & PAF go to Dingxin T & E Air Base (40 23 52.54 N, 99 46 45.15 E) for test-firing the China-origin SAMs before their service-induction, plus the test & evaluations of the JF-17A Block-3 & JF-17B tandeam-seaters. Am re-posting below the pertinent weblinks:

ReplyDeletewell wishes to you and your family
I have been watching videos of that Britisher Adrian Levy
he is claiming that Indian intelligentsia is very good at perception management and also is very good at penetrating terror outfits.
what are your views on this.
if the current video we saw is real then it really breaks my heart.
were there any counter from our side,
do you think Modi has mentality to go on war against the Chinese (a short war)
keeping mum will be embarrassing !!!!!
I saw those videos from Nitin Gokhale's Bharat shakti (it gives some hope)
it seems like Chinese are confident of our Defensive mentality and now they just want to tweak our arm
I swear to god I can't watch that video of our soldiers being handled as tokens.
I have plans with my friends to open an intelligence outfit like Stratfor.
can u give any advice.

Prasunda,
ReplyDeleteIt seems we are loosing at present in Jammu and Kashmir. The main reason as per my understanding is the supply chain of the terrorists are intact and regularly replenished by drones. And most probably stealth drones are used to keep an eye on movements of Army.
Obviously it's an assumption but drones are regularly violating Indian airspace this is true.
Why we can't fight this Drones menace ? Why we are always one step backward in technology ?
It's my opinion it's time to counter the Drones first then only we can breath little easily.
Best regards.
Excellent weeks for IA so far, shame on the Indian Defensive mindset.
ReplyDeleteIt seems not only IA chief everyone is clueless about how to handle own sovereignty.
When you say 9 systems inducted by PA, are you talking 9 tels, 9 batteries, or 9 squadrons?
ReplyDeleteDear Sir,
ReplyDeleteAs per my experience of government business rules, every agency / organization head is being informed about every minute / little detail of his jurisdictional work/news/happenings, etc. Every organization head sits in various statutory interagency/ steering Committees. Even then how come we are not able to solve our boundary issue with China when we have all the legal documents/instruments? It pains to see my fellow brothers beaten black n blue and we do not declare war on these bastards who intrude into our territory and we let it happen? Even vagabonds on our streets have such common sense where there place to sleep is and if someone intrudes they deal very bravely. Whether our bureaucrats (MEA) and netas have made us so full of disabilities that we cannot give a sound thrashing to this force of conscripts?
Hoping for some truth from u Sir, about who is/are the actual culprit(s) sitting behind the scenes whom nobody dare to question?

Prasun da, you must have seen the news about the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. Why is Sheikh Hasina failing to control it? Has she surrendered to Islamists? Earlier also Islamists would desecrate murtis during Durgapur puja but this year violence is happening at a whole different level all across Bangladesh.
ReplyDeletePrasunda,
ReplyDeleteI came across the following RFI issued by the Indian army a couple months back, for an Indigenous long range observation system..
https://indianarmy.nic.in/writereaddata/RFI/800/Broad%20Details%20-%20ILROS.pdf
I have a few questions :-
1) To whom is such equipment authorized ? to battalions, brigades, Division or some special units ?
2) Why just 65 units ?
3) Could give us a broad price range for such a product ?
4) Who could be worthwhile contenders ? apart from Tonbo's T-rex ?
5) Apart from this - do you think over the last few years we have sufficiently developed our army's night fighting, surveillance, observation capability ? For e.g issuing enough Thermal imagers, NVDs, rifle optics to our soldiers, our soldiers, except the ones on LoC, still look from an era long foregone... the kind of equipment I mention should be pretty standardised, at least for combat arms, in this age, don't you think ?
Thank you
Will the 400km ranged 40n6e missiles be part of Indian s400 package?
ReplyDeletePrasunda,
ReplyDeleteWhat is going on in Poonch these days. IA has taken a number of casualties in those forests adjoining the LC. Any chance that Pakis have dug in and seized unguarded territory in those forests like in Kargil ?

ReplyDeleteChinese keep releasing whatever photo or video they want.
The Pakistanis even did similar about Abhinandan.
Aren't these violations of Geneva Conventions? Even if they are not what stops us from releasing similar images or Videos?
Placating Chinese how long will it last?

To MERLIN: 1) VMT. I guess we will have to take his word for it. 2) Such videos of captured PLA soldiers also exist with the IA, but the mere fact that China releases such videos only means that it has total disregard for the Geneva Conventions. 3) There’s no need to go to any kinetic military action against China. Instead, military power, not military force, should be employed to prevail over China, i.e. conclude the re-balancing/re-deployment of IA forces along the LAC & begin conducting exercises of the IBGs, while at the same time begin making territorial counter-claims based on historicity, meaning laying claim to real-estate in & around Kailash-Mansarovar to the west & Chumbi valley to the east.
ReplyDeleteTo VIKRAM GUHA: The very same to you & all your loved ones. For the 7 new DPSUs, it will be common-sensical to have their HQs located in New Delhi.
To ANUP & SATYAKI: I have uploaded above a slide showing the 3 different forested areas in Mendhar where the counter-infiltration operations are now underway. It appears that the infiltrations took place from the Bhimber Gali area.
To PARTHASARATHI: No, not drones, but human mules/couriers are being used because, as I had explained before, fences cannot be erected over rivers & their tributaries. That’s why the nallahs & Gallis are alaos used during inclement weather for conducting infiltrations. The best deterrence against such infiltrations is to strike the HQs of such terrorist outfits in Muzaddarabad, Kotli & Rawalakot with IAF offensive airpower.
To DASHU: This only goes to show how regressive the IA’s information warfare machinery is. In fact, it is doubtful whether such an IW machinery even exists!
To SANJEEV: Nine TELs.
To PRATAP: Here’s the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnrfylJH5P4&t=55s
The Chittagong/Noakhali areas have always been known for periodic communal flare-ups since 1946.
To MANISH-2: 1) There are dedicated recce/scout Battalions within Infantry & Armoured Brigades that operate such hardware. 2) The total reqmt is for 800 LORROS systems of various types, i.e. some with only optronic sensors & some with both optronic & battlefield radar sensors. 5) With each passing year more & more sensors of various types get procured, like the tactical UAVs now being acquired.

Dear Prasun,
ReplyDelete1. Common man is unhappy with privatization. How would the intellectuals convince them that it good for the country? Bcoz the opposition (BJP or UPA) always keep them blind by protests.
2. When UPA government was implementing Aadhar project BJP opposed vehemently that you can recall. I needn't say about it. When will these bloody politicians work unitedly for the development of the country instead of fighting among themselves.
3. Modi was told to be having 56" chest. But the way it is handling the China dominance is not satisfied at all. Please share your views. Especially the counter attack ideas that you share here is not allien theory. Just it is about application of sound commonsense. But it is yet to happen.
4. India did a good job by raking up the issue of Turkey in UN favouring Cyprus. What's your take on it? Is it good enough to silence Erdogan? Or something more to be done?
5. May be this question irritate you. However I would like to be enlightened by you. You may see that muslim minority always blame Modi for 2002 riots in Gujarat; however refrain from taking blame for burning the train to kill Hindus. Why such partial thought!!! Where as Hindu community whenever a crime happens against minorities, they instantly blame themselves. Certainly it's good for maintaining secularism; but it can't be one sided. Muslim community is still regressive as they don't believe in marriage outside their religion. Those Muslims who sought out at Modi for being anti muslim, how much they are secular. If you are a muslim, you can't be secular or you are not a true Muslim. The seed for radicalism!!! What's say?
Please share your views.

Good that progress is being made on AAD.
Summarising:
VSHORAD Igla-S (5000 missiles+258 Single launchers+258 Multi-launchers) contract to be signed in January.
RFP issued for 220 AD Guns.
QRSAM progressing well.
MR-SAM(Army) also in right path.
2 Additional Akash (Army) SAM Regiments will also be ordered next year apart from the 2 already in Service as part of SR-SAM requirement of the Army.
Some unanswered questions hope you will elaborate.
1)What is the difference between Single launcher and Multi-launcher for VSHORAD Igla-S for the Army?
2)What does the RFP for 220 AD guns means does it want towed AD guns to replace L/70 or SPAAG? The report mentioned K30 Biho along with it which is a SPADGMS?
3)What is the timeline for 220 AD guns ie when will the contract be signed?
4)How many QRSAM regiments will the Army order?
5)Will the Army order 3 MRSAM Regiments or 5?
One observation I can make is that we have Indigenous SAM systems for AD but no basic indigenous AD guns or MANPADS.
You also mentioned that the DRDO project for indigenous MANPADS/VSHORAD is going to take a hit because of global chip shortage.
Thanks very much

Prasunda,
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for answering my previous question.
It seems in near future there will be a regime change in Pakistan ! Imran Khan will go and Military will step in. General Bajwa will be the President. And relationship with India will deteriorate further which may lead to some hot engagement if not a small scale war.
You opinion please.

prasun,
ReplyDeletethe so called chinese hypersonic glide vehicle is stolen most probably from the russians .Why are the russians quiet on it? and did the chinese actuallly fly something ? how is it that no one detected it if it did orbit the whole earth is beyond me??
It’s being reported that a new army aviation brigade has been raised in the eastern sector. They are reporting to consist of heron, dhruv and rudra elements. Do we know the exact composition(in terms of number of each of these platform) that compose a brigade?
ReplyDeleteTo ASD: 4) Just like Pakistan’s unilateral invasion of J & K in October 1947, Turkey too had unilaterally invaded Cyprus in 1974 & continues to illegally occupy northern Cyprus. 5) Regretably in India it is human nature to blame everyone else for one’s own misdeeds. That’s why Caste-based violence continues to take place unchecked in many parts of India. In othe words, no community can claim to be holier than thou. Several Muslims have married outside their communities/faiths & have not converted. The only path toward salvation lies in EDUCATION.
ReplyDeleteTo RANVEER: 1) single-launcher is the shoulder-launched MANPADS (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0f/9K338_Igla-S_%28NATO-Code_-_SA-24_Grinch%29.jpg). Twin-launcher is ground-based like the DZHIJIT (https://www.kbm.ru/en/production/pzrk/pupzrk/364.html). 2) L-70 replacements, but they will be road-mobile. 3) There are no fixed timelines. 4) Three. 5) Three.
To RAD: It indeed is a big deal. Here is the flight profile:
https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-9b18988ae222d49686cab01c7f9d79f5
For China, such a HGV will enable it to attack the US from both over the North Pole & the South Pole. Russia already has the Avanguard HGV & now China, although the US had flight-tested such weapons back in the 1980s itself. India hasn’t even begun conceptualising such a weapon. North Korea’s HGV isn’t an indigenous product, but rather a China-developed HGV acquired off-the-shelf.
To KRITAVARMA: 1) From where did you get that? India’s withdrawal from both FGFA & MRTA projects did not result in any material loss for her. 2) Not at all. No one from BrahMos Aerospace had ever claimed that the BrahMos-2 will be developed by India & that too by 2020.
To PARTHASARATHI: Kindly rest assured that Pakistan does not even possess the financial resources required for staging a Division-level field exercise, leave alone waging any kind of conventional war.
To JUST_CURIOUS: Not at all. China’s HGV is a totally indigenous product, but Russia’s Avanguard HGV is already deployed & operational. China flight-tested this HGV on August 13 by firing an ICBM carrying the HGV from the Jilantai area & the HGV impacted at a distance of 14,000km. I had conducted its ISR monitoring in real-time & that’s why no one else has as yet given out the date of this flight-test or the distance the HGV had covered.
To SANJEEV: Each AAC Brigade will have a LUH Flight, a Dhruv CASEVAC Flight, a Rudra helicopter-gunship Flight, plus a UAV Flight. Each Flight will have eight helicopters & the UAV Flight will havbe 6 UAVs.

ReplyDeleteThe maximum yield of the Pokhran test is 40kt. What are the mass and maximum yield of current Indian nuclear missiles? maximum payload of Agni 5 is 1500 kilo, what will be the real warhead yield vs weight excluding decoys and stuff.
Does IPHWR 220, 540, 700 come under IAEA watch? How do you rate IPHWR 700 safety measures compared to other country reactors to withstand/avoid incidents like Fukushima / Chernobyl? DAE says IPHWR 700 is Gen 3 reactor. what is the latest Gen going on in the international market as far as PHWRs are concerned?
What are we doing with the spent uranium which is imported? Can India reprocess imported spent fuel like extracting plutonium from it for future use on 2nd stage reactors, after all, we paid for them?
When do you think we will reach 50GW capacity with 2nd stage reactors(according to 3 stage program) with current installation speed, we are yet to start 2nd stage commercially. And is it wise to pursue 3 stage program or try something different like the molten salt method which can use thorium directly.
Why we are developing IPWR 900 when we have little knowledge on commercial light water technology which uses enriched uranium (except INS Arihant's small LWR with 84 MW capacity). Producing heavy water is less costly than enriching uranium. we should have gone with AHWR 300 which introduce the usage of thorium on IPHWRs.
What is your profession?

Prasunda,
ReplyDelete1) With China building its nuclear forces up comprehensively, it is likely to attain parity with the US and Russia in the next few years?
2) US Stratcom chief also claims China has made great strides in missile defence. If so, has India's limited A-5 stockpile lost credibility ?
3) Is there any sign that India will take steps to restore deterrent credibility? Or will they follow the advice of people like Pravin Sawhney to decide that going nuclear was a mistake and look for ways to disarm ?
T9BK8
To SANJEEV: Obviously for purposes of deterrence, India too needs to develop such weapons. On the defensive side, R & D on high-power laser-based directed-energy weapons needs to be accelerated.
ReplyDeleteTo THE INDIAN: No, not Indian, but it can be either a PN SSK or even a PLAN SSK. 1) It is an economic QUAD that will safeguard India’s interests in the Red Sea & Persian Gulf areas. It must be noted that the UK recently announced its intention to invest in port infrastructure in Somaliland—a country that is not recognised by the UN as a sovereign country. 2) Not at all & they never will, rest assured. 3) They always are. 4) There have not been any flare-ups, just routine faceoffs. 5) Had already explained it all in several previous threads.
To MANIVANNAN SERMAIYA: About 150 KT for boosted-fission warheads. ICBMs like Agni-5 can carry five such warheads. Nuclear Power Reactor generations vary from country to country. In India’s case, Gen-1 was the 220mW PHWRs of CANDU design, Gen-2 was the 540mW PHWR & Gen-3 is the 700mW PHWR. IPHWRs incorporate several safety features that were not there in either Chernobyl & Fukushima. And in both cases, the disasters were caused by human errors, not equipment malfunctions. All fissile materials that are imported for use as fuel have to be sent back to the supplier & hence they cannot be reprocessed in India. India has had experience in operating commercial PWRs since the 1950s after GE supplied two such units for Tarapur.
To NISHAN GUPTA: Chowkidaari.
To BUDDHA: There is a growing belief within India that the recent spate of communal violence in Bangladesh was China-inspired/-funded. While it is beyond doubt that such pogroms were pre-planned, it is difficult to believe that Bangladesh’s internal security/law enforcement agencies were totally unaware of it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2osghv3ckg
As for India’s diminished conventional deterrence, it is true that over the past decade there has been a severe slide. For instance, when the IAF states that its squadron strength has fallen down to 29 squadrons, in reality, the figure is 22 squadrons, since the remaining squadrons are grounded during peacetime due to various serviceability issues. In addition, the unwillingness to employ offensive IAF airpower as a response to constant violations of Indian airspace by Pakistan-origin drones has further contributed to the diminishing of the IAF’s airpower deterrence.
To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) China is not at all interested in committing its manpower to any kind of military kinetic action against India. 2) It takes decades of R & D to come up with HGVs. Showing mere scale-models & illustrations & that too by start-up entities is by no means indicative of any serious R & D project. 3) The Kremlin is doing this in order to pressurise Japan into inking the long-overdue peace treaty with Russia that formally terminates the state of war that exists between the two countries since 1945.

BTW, remember this standoff?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eub_DBx1gD4
It had taken place back in 2014 at Batang La: 27 19 28.24 N, 88 55 11.52 E
To T9BK8: 1) Not likely. 2) China has indeed invested heavily in developing both a network of ground-based early-warning BMD radars as well as on high-power laser-based directed-energy weapons. 3) Some steps have been taken by India, especially in the field of directed-energy laser-based air-defence systems.

ReplyDeleteThey weren't a majority even in the 1947, yet they massacred millions of hindus and taken a significant portion of their land. Partition 2.0 is inevitable, if not tomorrow than it'll be on the day after tomorrow, cause there's no way you're going to change their intolerant or majoritarian views even if you give them everything. Look at the Bangladesh, if the next day india engages in two front war with china and pakistan than i am 100 percent sure that those bangladeshi razakar will go after bengali hindus and finish what they couldn't in 1971 or the following years after.
DeleteI am also a Bangali like you prasun da and i am from a village where riot and communal tensions started by muslims doesn't attract any media attention unless there's a muslim casualties. I am telling you, it doesn't matter how many high end, 'liberal muslim' friends one have or how much biriyani and kabab he shared with them, their inbuilt bigotry will always make them side with their own kind even if they are the one who are committing the atrocities on Hindus.
