Thanks for the links in previous post on Aero-engines as well as this post on Indian status.

Do we have an indigenous turbofan or turbo-prop aero engine option for the LTA or Indian Dornier ? I don't think so, though potential exists. I won't even raise questions on helicopter engines. It's a long way for India to travel & with resource constraints we have wasted years on a wrong approach to aero-engines

do reply to the questions in the previous blog
do we have to go to russia agiaan to integrate the mk2 and mk3 version of astra especially when we fix a aesa seeker in future.
The write up on engine technology is mind bogging. Some of the tech to be masterd itself is is not understood. I really wonder how we are going to achieve all this.
    will Safran or ge help?

the scoprius jammer pod seems to be a wonder given its specs, wont a couple of them on a su-30mki make a ready made SEAD fighter?

  7. Hi Prasun,

First it was Rolls Royce, then French Safran and now General Electric seems to have come forward to offer to co develop an engine for the AMCA

What exactly has prompted such offers at this stage, from all the major engine manufacturers of the western world, how much has the current geopolitical situation contributed to helping India developing an engine for its future fighter?

Also, in terms.of autonomy, which offer would be most suitable for India? I also find it unusual that Russia is quiet about this, that they have not made a counter offer.

  12. Dada,
If I am not wrong turbo shaft engine and STFE were supposed to be proposed in 2008 times for development. and it got delayed is it not right ?

If I am right , why does it take so much of time for the MOD and DRDO to start of with smaller items first and then going for bigger ideas? Had they done it we would have scout kind of Autonomous helicopters for surveillance long back and had they developed the small turbofans which are not use and throw but with long service life of say 2000 hours and 10000 feet altitude, but cheaper to manufacture would have provided enough UAV cover for surveillance from with in the border with some kind of multiple ground control stations with handover from one station to another if incase its about to cross the stations range , I know very well we are not in the same level of autonomous capabilities with sat link like USA or Israel

  15. To RAD: China has been conducting R & D on E-MALS since the past 20 years. J-15 H-MRCAs won’t be operating from the Fujian. Instead, the Shenyang J-35 M-MRCA will. ZIRCON & BrahMos-2 are 2 sides of the same coin. The fire-control system will use GPS navigation for terminal guidance as well. No deepwater port can ever serve as a naval base, be it Gwadar or Hambantota. Vietnam has since 2013 procured enough Bastion-P (Russian version of BrahMos-1) supersonic cruise missiles. Mistral VSHORADS is not being procured. Instead its ATAM variant will be licence-built by MBDA for arming the Rudras, Dhruv WSI, LCH & LUH. China is not a formal signatory to the MTCR but it has officially stated that it adheres to the MTCR’s provisions. As for airborne jammers, DARE has already developed the HBJ pod for high-band jamming & similarly for low-band jamming (LBJ) & mid-band jamming (MBJ) DARE is developing suitable pod-mounted jammers. Mission data recorders aare new-generation avionics for India, but they are already on-board the Rafale & are highly useful for flight-safety purposes.

Any add-on avionics or weapons meant for the Su-30MKI will have to be integrated in Russia, because that’s where the integration rigs are. Furthermore, Russia has not shared the source-codes for either the flight-control system or the fire-control system or the weapons management system with India. As the slide above reveals, the weapons management computer has to be linked with different interfaces boxes for accommodating different types of weapons. Such problems don’t exist for platforms like the Jaguar IS/DARIN-3, Tejas Mk.1A & Mk.1A, the projected MWF & the AMCA, whose operating software’s source-codes for the flight-control system, fire-control system & weapons management system are all indigenously developed.

To ANKIT KUMAR: Mistral VSHORADS is not being procured. Instead its ATAM variant will be licence-built by MBDA for arming the Rudras, Dhruv WSI, LCH & LUH. BDL is already licence-assembling AIM-132 ASRAAM SRAAMs meant for the upgraded Jaguar IS/DARIN-3s.

To JUST_CURIOUS: They are both FAKE NEWS. For tracking space debris, ISRO already possesses one MOTR radar & the second such radar will be located somewhere in Assam. BEL has only inked an MoU with the Belarussian OEM, not a contract. Also, the MAWS sensors are likely to be the ones co-developed by DARE & ELBIT Systems. The Belarussian firm will only be responsible for supplying the conformal fitments & certifying the entire installation for usage.

To AKS: As the heading suggests, it is a speculative story.

    ReplyDelete
  16. To DASHU: Of course not. In fact, the 2 webinars clearly spell out the shortcomings still persisting. Even the non-afterburning variant of Kaveri meant for the stealthy RPSA will have to undergo airborne flight-tests, for which no airborne testbed exists with the DRDO as of now. On top of that, when it comes of BLISK-based technologies, India has yet to master the welding of different types of high-strength alloys, as mentioned in those 2 webinars. And while BLISK is for Gen-4 turbofans, it is BLING that will be used on Gen-5 turbofans.

To KAUSTAV: VMT. The 2 webinars clearly revealed all that is wrong with ongoing R & D efforts concerning turbofans, turboshafts & turboprop engines. Foremost is the total absence of a National Aeronautical Commission (like the Space Commission) that directs both the technical & industrial components of the effort. Consequently, the entire effort is lopsided in favour of military-technical & military-industrial efforts. Hence, even if a turboprop engine is to be developed, where will be its application? On UAVs, regional commuter turboprops? No one was able to provide answers in those webinars. Thus we have entities like GTRE, HAL & NAL all involved in similar efforts, leading to unnecessary duplication of effort. Why the hell should NAL be involved with developing the SARAS aircraft? Why have successive Govts of India refused to graduate from the Dornier Do-228 to the D-328? As for constraints, they are not resource-based, but are due to lack of intellectual depth. For instance, back in 1992 at the Asian Aerospace expo in Singapore, I had a long discussion with the ADE’s then Director Dr K G Narayan about the prospects for developing an anti-ship strike & land-attack cruise missile variants of the Lakshaya pilotless target drone powered by a HAL-developed PTAE-7 turbojet. It was totally feasible then & the experience gained would have led to the development & fielding of the STFE-powered Nirbhay cruise missile 15 years ago!

To KAUSTAV & RAGHU: Any offer, be it from the US or France or the UK, on co-developing Gen-5 turbofans will clearly state that BLING-based production technologies will not be shared with India, i.e. India will have to send high-strength alloy forgings & castings to OEMs in the US & France where they will be machines & welded. In fact, such dependence on foreign OEM already exists for BLISKS meant for Gen-4 turbofans Like Kaveri & HTFE-25.

To JOYDEEP GHOSH: The PAF does not have F-16 Vipers.

    ReplyDelete
  17. To SASI: 1) Both QR-SAM & VL-SR-SAM are derived from the Astra-1 BVRAAM & therefore they all will have identical avionics & warheads. 3) All the data exists in the thread dealing with the VIKRANT’s sea-trials process. But to expect Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornets to operate from the VIKRANT will be highly premature simply because the Super Hornets are meant to operate in conjunction with Northrop Grumman E-2D Hawkeye AEW platforms. The Super Hornet will not be able to communicate with Kamov Ka-31 AEW helicopters & consequently the super Hornet will become a sub-optimal & highly under-utilised M-MRCA when operating from the Vikrant.

To TECHNOLOGY, PHOTOGRAPHY & TRAVEL: That’s due to the total absence of a National Aeronautical Commission (like the Space Commission) that directs both the technical & industrial components of the effort.

To VIKRAM GUHA & JUST_CURIOUS: Yes. Then there are also ‘desi’ options, like this:

  22. No deepwater port can ever serve as a naval base - specific any constraint

    ReplyDelete
  23. To RAGHU: While one could speculate that he was referring to IAO, ELBIT Systems & RAFAEL, in reality that is not the case. Of the 3, the only one I know of is an Israeli OEM that had developed explosion-proof boots worn by sappers for clearing minefields, which was reportedly reverse-engineered by the DRDO.

To SOUMYA RAY: The major refit of an SSK is undertaken 13 years after entering service. Hence, INS Kalvari will be due for its first refit cycle in 2030. The refit is undertaken over a period of 24 months. The sea-trials of the AIP module will last for another 18 months. There will be nett increase in propulsion power from the MAN diesel engine. Both Lithium-Ion batteries & AIP modules are reqd on the SSK.

To DASHU: LoLz! What goes around, comes around, I suppose.

To AMIT BISWAS: Deepwater ports don’t have any breakwaters, whereas all naval bases have breakwaters constructed along an east-west or north-south axis to prevent the tidal waves from entering in an uncontrolled manner within the sheltered areas of a port/harbour for the sake of protecting those ships that are berthed alongside at various wharfs/jetties. One can see such breakwaters at the naval bases in Mumbai, Karwar & Vizag.

DRDO has to be congratulated on discovering what no one else in the world has done - ie making a vertical fin appear suddenly on the ghatak when its on the landing run . while taking off the fin mysteriously is not visible due to plasma stealth technology. The world over there is no vertical fin on a flying wing design so far.!!!

  25. Dear Prasun,

Earlier you showed many times as you told that GoI never imposes the rule of the land. Now that GoUP under Yogi Adityanath bulldozing the houses of the rioters, do you support this move? Is it justified in a democratic country like India? Is it against the law of the land? Is India becoming like a majoritarian country?
Further share your views on Agnipath scheme. Is it a good decision?

Please share your view upon it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. To RAD: LoLz! It is in reality a scaled-down technology demonstrator that will be used by the ADE to derive the data-points reqd for formulating the flight-control logic for the full-scale Ghaatak RPSA that will make use of a fly-by-wire flight-control system. The scaled-down scaled-down technology demonstrator is powered by a STFE that uses directionally solidified turbine blades.

To ASD: The bulldozing is being carried out only on ILLEGAL structures. Officially, therefore, the dwellings of the rioters are not being demolished & hence it is only COINCIDENTAL if the demolished structures belonged to some of the rioters or their instigators. As per the law, only after a court of law convicts the rioters will the rioters be reqd to financially reimburse the concerned govt for the damage sustained to public property/assets. If the convicted rioters cannot pay the reqd sum of money, then their landed properties/real estates will be seized & auctioned in order to recover the sum of money.

I don't normally follow RT. But the following news, if true, is deeply concerning.

    https://www.rt.com/russia/558214-ukraine-helped-north-korea/

Ukraine does possess considerable advanced military rocket and engine and other technologies and factories as leftover from the Soviet days. Just how much of it has leaked out is open to question. What is more concerning is the total lack of accountability in those factories. Is this kind of leakage and transfer of technologies being done with the silent approval of the Ukranian authorities?

When this types of 'Assets' riding high on backing of the respective parties, commits 'any blunder', depending upon its magnitude, the parties tend to abandon 'him or her'.

This is what Def Sec Ajay Kumar said about C-295 in a recent interview with FT: "outer wings, center wings, box, nose fuselage, center fuselage, appendages and doors. These key components will be done in India. Besides, two testers for these parts and major sub-assemblies will be done in India. Assemblies of aero-structure, including the subassemblies will be all done in India. The various systems such as engines, landing gear, avionics, EW suite will be done in India.............96 percent of the total manhour per hour which Airbus used to employ at its manufacturing facility of Spain is planned to be undertaken here in India. The ninety six percent– is the level of indigenization. There are going to be more than 125 MSMEs suppliers who will contribute in manufacturing C-295 in India."

  43. To RAGHU & SOUMYA RAY: LoLz! Never get fooled by such data, simply because no timelines are cleverly given for such indigenisation levels. In reality, such components & sub-systems will be progressively licence-built, i.e. over a 20-year period, by which time the search will begin for the replacement aircraft. The same has been the case with all licence-built military hardware in India, be it the T-72M/T-90S MBTs or the Su-30MKIs.

To KAISHIK: It is undergoing flight-tests, as revealed in the 1st webinar.

1- what grouse do germans hold against india -https://idrw.org/uninformed-comments-unhelpful-says-india-after-germanys-remarks-on-arrest-of-mohammed-zubair%ef%bf%bc%ef%bf%bc/.. they have been sheltering khalistani elements, don't squeak on the kurd sellout or the monthly shootings in US. it has happened quite a few times in the past as well. it does come with a tinge of racism I suspect & probably our closeness to france-its rival power in EU, is what may be causing the heartburn or plain appeasement politics like the labour party i the UK pandering to radical islamists- germany has a sizeable turkish & middle eastern immigrants..or they got equated with us on the question of energy buys from Russia
2- will this snowball into something? https://idrw.org/pok-gilgit-baltistan-residents-protest-over-awarding-mining-contracts-to-foreign-company%ef%bf%bc%ef%bf%bc/ given the hardships they are facing given the porki eco- meltdown?

  50. To SOUMYA RAY: LoLz! It is the most IDIOTIC story that I have probably come across thus far. How can the US develop such technologies when its fighting forces do not even operate at such altitudes? Instead, it is the other way around, i.e. the US learning much more from India. For instance, how the IN's P-8Is were used since 2017 for terrain mapping & moving target monitoring along & beyond the LAC.

Until 2003 the US had relied on the PA for high-altitude warfare training, as explained here:

    https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/ADA416609.pdf

The Pakistan Army, having been involved in Kashmir for the last fifty years, has had long experience fighting in mountainous, as well as on glaciated terrain only up to an altitude of 16,000 feet ASL. The rugged terrain in Kashmir provides opportunities for soldiers and units to be trained and acclimatized before being committed to actual combat on the line of control between Pakistan and India. The Pakistan Army can also draw upon the local population, who are much more suitable and physically capable of operating in such terrain. Due to continuous operation in such an environment, the Pakistan Army has been able to learn from its experiences and incorporate these into the training.

But since then onwards, the US has relied more & more on learning from India's experiences:

Lastly, the US has no interest in learning about high-altitude plateau warfare simply because it has no such enemy that is perched at such high-altitudes. Hence, only India & perhaps China are likely to be engaged in high-altitude plateau warfare, not even Pakistan.
