Updates From Ongoing Seminar on “Future Armoured Vehicles” Organised By The Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS) & Fuelling High Expectations By Manufacturing FAKE NEWS

The Indian Army (IA) has put into the deep-freezer futuristic projects like the FRCV and FICV, and is now focussed entirely on upgrading its existing fleets of main battle tanks (MBT) and infantry combat vehicles (ICV), in addition to procuring new-build MBTs of existing designs—both imported and ‘desi’.
T-90S MBT Fleet
The total number of 46-tonne T-90S MBTs planned for procurement is 1,657—a figure that was firmed up way back in 2007. To date, 640 units have been procured from Russia (both as off-the-shelf units and those in semi-knocked-down condition, while only 125 have been built under licence (with dismal levels of indigenisation) by the state-owned, Avadi-based Heavy Vehicles Factory, with another 464 now awaiting to be built (for equipping 10 Armoured Regiments). This leaves another 428 of these MBTs to be ordered.
The IA now wants to upgrade its 640 T-90S (that came from Russia) through the installation of a new digital hunter-killer fire-control system developed by TATA Power SED, which will include an autotracker correction-input device and a related muzzle reference system. In addition, a locally-developed auxiliary power unit (APU) will be installed, as will laser warning receivers. But most importantly, the IA has decided not to opt for active protection systems and has instead mandated that 360-degree augmented situational awareness systems be procured.
Such systems are presently available from Israel’s ELBIT Systems, and Germany’s Hensoldt (known as the SETAS local situational awareness system (LSAS), and also from Rheinmetall Defence Electronics GmbH, whose solution is called eLSAS (extended Local Situational Awareness System). Elbit Systems' IronVision helmet-mounted augmented situational awareness system uses a number of externally mounted cameras to project the 360-degree view of an MBT’s surroundings onto the helmet-mounted displays (HMD) of its crew members. The IronVision transmits real-time, high-resolution color video to the commander and/or driver, providing them with a natural, bi-ocular, conformal view of the vehicle's surroundings, together with relevant symbology and data. Using the Iron Vision ‘See-Through’ HMD, a crew of two (commander and gunner) is capable of operating the MBT entirely under closed hatches. The system transmits real-time, high resolution video to the crews’ HMDs. In addition, Iron Vision enables the crew to acquire targets, conduct line-of-sight (LOS) driving and navigation and enslave the MBT’s weapons systems to their LOS.
T-72U Upgrade
For the 1,000 T-72Ms to be retrofitted with the ELBIT Systems/Alpha Technologies-supplied TIFCS fire-control systems, the earlier plan for powering them with an indigenously turbocharged V46-6 engine has gone horribly wrong since an uprated 1,000hp engine also requires a brand-new gearbox (which the Avadi-based Combat Vehicles R & D Establishment, or CVRDE has been unable to develop), since the existing gearbox of the T-72M is optimised for operating with only the 780hp variant of the V46-6 engine.
Consequently, the only option now is to import both the 1,000hp V92S2 engine (of the T-90S) and its associated gearbox as a complete powerpack from Russia’s Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant, with HVF undertaking the final installation on the T-72U hulls at Avadi. The T-72Us too will contain ‘desi’ APUs.
The IA has also tasked the DRDO to develop a 125mm-diameter variant of the 120mm cannon-launched guided-missile (CLGM), despite the DRDO’s inability so far to develop the 120mm CLGM.
Arjun Mk.1A Status
The IA is now fully satisfied with the enhancements carried out by CVRDE on the MBT’s powerpack. However, the installation of the RCWS mounting on the turret is offering very limited LOS to the MBT’s port-side. Consequently, the only remedy now being readied is a raised commander’s periscope—believe it or not! In addition, the IA has also specified a 360-degree situational awareness system for fitment on the turret. And as for the futuristic Arjun Mk.2, no one is even willing to utter a word about it as of now.
Kestrel 8 x 8 APC
After subjecting this wheeled APC to mobility and firepower tests in the North-East, the IA had mandated several modifications, which are now in the process of being carried out. No firm contracts for this APC has been placed to date.
Since the previous decade itself, India-based ‘desi patrakaars’, through both print and electronic media outlets, have been churning out FAKE NEWS about the export potential of India-made military hardware like the BrahMos-1 supersonic multi-role cruise missile and the Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA). For instance, no one from Vietnam has ever gone on-record to express any interest in importing BrahMos-1s from India. In reality, Hanoi back in 2008 had ordered an initial two Regiments of 3K55 Bastion-P coastal defence systems that use the P-800 Oniks/Yakhont supersonic cruise missiles developed and produced by the Russia-based NPOM (which also owns a 49% stake in the BrahMos Aerospace joint venture, with the Govt of India owning the remaining 51%).
The 3K55 Bastion-Ps started arriving in Vietnam back in 2011, with each Regiment including four motorised self-propelled launcher vehicles carrying K340P (two cannistered missiles on each launcher vehicle); vehicles carrying ammunition reserves; a Monolit-B fire-control radar; and a command vehicle. Since then, Vietnam has expressed interest in procuring another two Regiments of this very coastal defence system, as revealed here:

A more recent FAKE NEWS that has been circulating concerns speculation about exporting the Tejas LCA to Malaysia. This piece of disinformation originated early this year through such news publications:

And here is the reality: Malaysia’s Tentera Udara Diraja Malaysia (TUDM) will in the first quarter of next year formally launch a procurement effort for up to 36 light combat aircraft/fighter lead-in trainer (LCA/FLIT), with an option for 26, to eventually replace a number of its current combat platforms like the 14 BAE Systems Hawk Mk.208s, 13 MiG-29Ns, and seven Aermacchi MB-339CMs. According to the TUDM HQ, eight candidate OEMs have so far made unsolicited offers, comprising the Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) FA-50 Fighting Eagle from South Korea; from India the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) Tejas Mk.1; Leonardo of Italy’s M-346FA; Czech Republic’s Aero Vodochody L-39NG; China’s Hongdu Aircraft Industry Group-developed L-15A/B; the JF-17 Thunder from the Sino-Pakistani Chengdu Aerospace Corp/Pakistan Aeronautical Complex industrial partnership; the Saab JAS-39 Gripen-C’s MS20 sub-variant from Sweden; and from Russia’s the ROSTEC-promoted Yakovlev Yak-130.
The TUDM has to date specified that the selected LCA/FLIT must be able to conduct air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, with a future maritime strike capability; that it must be able to conduct counter-insurgency operations; that it be economically viable; and that enough be bought to be able to conduct operations in two theatres simultaneously, and at very short notice. What this means is that the chosen LCA/FLIT’s fleet will comprise both single-seaters and tandem-seaters, and its primary roles will be air combat and all-weather precision-strike. Consequently, this will require to the LCA/FLIT to possess the kind of performance parameters that will easily disqualify platforms like the M-346FA, L-39NG, L-15A/B and the Yak-130. This then leaves behind the FA-50, Tejas Mk.1, JF-17 and the JAS-39 Gripen-C’s MS20 sub-variant.
Coming now to cost-effectiveness, the first one to be disqualified will likely be the JF-17, whose direct operating costs will be higher than its competitors on account of its 1980s-era Klimov RD-93 turbofan, which has a total technical service life of only 350 hours of operation. Also to be disqualified will be the Tejas Mk.1 LCA due to three primary deficiencies: 1) Its as-yet-undetermined direct operating costs. 2) Its usage of Israel-origin mission-critical avionics (like the Elbit Systems TARGO HMDS, RAFAEL’s Litening-2 LDP and the ELTA Systems-built EL/M-2032 multi-mode radar on the Tejas Mk.1). 3) The absence of mission-critical hardware on the Tejas Mk.1 like an internally-mounted cannon and a self-protection jammer.
During the Aero India 2019 expo last February in Bengaluru, the Tejas Mk.1s belonging to both the IAF and the Aeronautical development Agency (ADA) that were displayed in static form were shown without their GSH-23 cannon-mountings, as illustrated by the two slides below:
As for those expecting the Tejas’ Mk.1A variant to be offered to Malaysia, they need to bear in mind that the TUDM will not accept any solution that includes any Israel-origin avionics and armament. And since the Tejas Mk.1A will use the ELTA Systems-delivered EL/M-2052 AESA-MMR, TARGO HMDS. Litening-2 LDP and ELTA Systems’ EL/L-8222 airborne self-protection jamming pod, the Tejas Mk.1A too will be disqualified by the TUDM. And although the IAF has specified a pod-mounted cannon for both the Tejas Mk.1 and tejas Mk.1A variants, it is anybody’s guess as to when such a solution will be procured (either as a locally-developed product or an imported off-the-shelf product).
And yet, despite these shortcomings being flagged way ahead in advance, for entirely unknown reasons a large contingent of officials from India’s Ministry of Defence, the Indian Air Force (IAF) and HAL was authorised to participate in the Langkawi International Maritime Aero Expo (LIMA-2019) that was held in Langkawi, Malaysia, from March 26 to 30 earlier this year.
The Only Viable LCA/FLIT Contenders
As of now, therefore, the FA-50 is the leading contender for fulfilling the TUDM’s LCA/FLIT requirement. Powered by a single General Electric F404-GE-102 turbofan developing 17,700lbf of thrust with afterburner, this turbofan provides a maximum speed of 1,837.5kph (Mach 1.5). The ‘Golden Eagle’ family of LCA/FLIT platforms, jointly developed by KAI and US-based Lockheed Martin, has already bagged lucrative export contracts in both Southeast Asia and West Asia.
Indonesia’s Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Angkatan Udara (TNI-AU) awarded a US$400 million contract to KAI in May 2011 for the supply of 16 FA-50s. Deliveries were completed by the end of 2013.
In December 2013 Iraq ordered 24 of the FA-50s worth $1.1 billion. On October 19, 2013, The Philippines and South Korea signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the former’s procurement of FA-50s. On February 13, 2014, Manila approved the payment scheme for purchasing 12 FA-50s at a cost of $415.7 million. On March 28, 2014, The Philippines’ Department of National Defense signed a contract for 12 FA-50s for $421.12 million. Deliveries began in November 2015 and were completed in May 2017. In September 2015, the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) chose the TA-50TH variant for the Hongdu L-15 to replace its L-39 Albatros advanced jet trainers. The four TA-50THs were delivered by March 2018.
Notably, while the TA-50/FA-50 aircraft of the ROKAF, Philippine Air Force and RTAF make use of the EL/M-2032 MMR, the FA-50s of Indonesia and Iraq have on-board the APG-67(V)4 multi-mode radar, supplied by Lockheed Martin, since both these countries, like Malaysia, have a declaratory policy of not procuring any Israel-origin military hardware.
Saab, on the other hand, is proposing a cheaper variant of its JAS-39, known as the JAS-39C MS20 sub-variant, that will use new-generation but cost-effective mission avionics like Leonardo of Italy’s Vixen 500E or Grifo-E AESA-MMR. In addition, Saab is also offering this MRCA with Kongsberg’s NSM anti-ship cruise missile, which has already been ordered by the Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia (TLDM, or Royal Malaysian Navy). The Swedish National Export Credits Guarantee Board (EKN) is now gearing up to offer export credit support and be the possible solution for the budgetary scarcity issues faced by the TUDM.

Does that mean that MIRV's, composite first stages , high energy propellants and other improvements have been shelved ?

It's shocking to learn , such an immature idea for not using EMI-resistant wiring harnesses to prevent interference by the EL/L-8222 jamming pod....i mean ASQR didn't specified it or there is no adequate MIL NATO/GOST standards for military aircraft wiring harness?? i wonder what other glaring omissions have been made in this made in india fighter programe??


The kargil air warfare as described by AM Nambi 'tiger' is very informative...would love to see the slides and videos too...any way of getting our hands into it?? I feel he should have been our next CAS after Tony but alas our Netas need jee hujur type CAS it seems...

About the Russian engines susceptible to FOD damage, I remember a video abt wing commnader Oswald flying in Mig 27 from hashimara base similarly crashed during take off due to engine fire and later was martyred....is it due to material weakness of blades or problem in combustion chamber??? Any case study undertaken by services to make them more resistant to FOD...Mig 29K shouldn't have crashed due to two engines...even recently jaguar bird strike video was shown ....but it was successfully recovered by pilots as two engines were there...IN should move away Mig 29K from Goa to Karwar or arrakonam or even jamnagar or porbandar to avoid birds in highly populated areas...god knows what awaits for rafales in ambala

The IN's decision to favour a twin-engined MWF-N design was taken 2 years ago & it was the correct decision since in India's case twin-engined MWFs are best suited for the type of carrier aviation operations reqd to be undertaken by the IN in future. So ONCE AGAIN, the IN wants NOT a twin-engined NLCA Mk.2, but a twin-engined MWF-N, since a twin-engined MRCA can't be labelled as LCA by any stretch of imagination.

To SATYAKI: Like I had stated before, if the interviewer asks stupid questions, then he/she will only receive stupid answers. And since precise questions on specifics were not asked, no specifics emerged from the answers. Hence, it is far better to still rely on the data shared by Dr V K saraswat (in his capacity as a member of NITI Aayog) on future ICBM/SLBM developments that deal with MIRVs.

To AMIT BISWAS: That was because when the Tejas Mk.1 was being touted (back in 2011) as of being IOC-1 standard, it was devoid of either the earlier-planned internal self-protection jammer or the underwing ASPJ pod. Consequently, EMI protection from integral jamming sources was not sought. The IN withdrew the LPD’s RFP because of inter-service turf wars. The IA & IAF had objected since their ‘views’ were not incorporated by the IN. In reality, it is the IA & IAF that are to blame because they don’t know the difference between sealift’ & amphibious warfare. Both the IA & IAF are thinking that future joint services operations will be like how the IA had landed at Chittagong back in 1971, or in northern Sri Lanka in 1987, i.e. in uncontested waters & coastlines. On the other hand, amphibious warfare calls for fighting one’s way through from the sea to the coastal landing area where surface & airborne platforms have to fight in unison. Hence, command-n-control has to be unified & cannot be distributed among the army, navy & air force. Hence, apart from the LPD, all types of utility/attack helicopters & armoured vehicles will also have to be navy-operated & navy-manned. All this only illustrates just how regressive the Indian military mindset is WRT amphibious warfare. Russia-developed LP/HP turbine blades have material deficiencies & are not as durable as their Western counterparts.

To ASHISH GAUTAM: If it is to be twin-engined, then it will no longer remain a LCA, but will morphe into the heavier MWF. So, the question now is whether the IAF too will favour a twin-engined MWF, or will the IN be the only one to insist on a twin-engined MWF while knowing only too well that it is beyond ADA’s capacity to concurrently handle 3 developmental projects, that of the single-engined MWF, a twin-engined MWF & the futuristic AMCA.

1) Sir why no APS,is situational awareness and early warning good enough?

2) With glide bombs and pgms of all kinds, is there a need for dedicated ground attack aircrafts in modern day?
I can understand getting jets for deep penetration or low flight profile, and high sortie rate required for interdiction roles, but even tejas can hang back and launch bombs 50 km away from frontlines in ground support?

3) What BMP2 upgrades have been decided this time?

4) Please throw some light on Pakistani network centric warfare capabilities if any and their progress in BMS rehbar, or alternative to IAF IACCS.

If navy wants a twin engined mrca then can't we use the kaveri engine?
Kaveri engine has higher thrust than the snecma m88.Kaveri is 300kg heavier as well but can't that be offset by making the airframe a bit lighter and having a slightly lower max take of weight for the n-mrca. They can desigh the fighter around the kaveri engine. Is this doable?
Ps- sorry if my question is stupid.
I am a novice and have no domain knowledge in this field.

Are'nt you referrring to the slides you uploaded in Dec. 2017 ? They still refer to a all-composite land based MIRVed A6 of 5000 km range and a unnamed 6000+ km MIRVed SLBM. Would the land based A6 referred to in those slides begin testing soon ?

I would share u a different story about an UAV squadron of airbase...the technical officers could not even start a DG when mains failed during UAV flying just because the NCO had passed out ...later they somehow managed another NCO from nearby squadron nd started before ups backup too failed....later the CO in open meeting gave good dressing to the technical officers...that's the professionalism dear

To VENKY: Frankly speaking, it is IMPOSSIBLE for any institution in India to simultaneously both single-engined & twin-engined MWF. Consequently, either the IN commits to a single-engined MWF, or the IAF commits to a twin-engined MWF. But since the IN requires only 57 twin-engined carrier-based MRCAs, it will be spectacularly unrealistic to support the IN’s point of view WRT a twin-engined MWF. To GESSLER & VSJ: There are certain ground realities that one needs to bear in mind & appreciate before being carried away by technological novelties. For instance, no APS can be active against a volley of PRG-type rounds being fired in one go. For instance, back in October 1973, the Egyptian Army ambushed several Israeli MBTs in the Sinai by firing up to 20 RPG-7s from multiple directions all at the same time. The same scenario prevails in present-day & future battlefields. The APS therefore will be effective only against up to 3 RPG-type rounds that are fired at the same time, i.e. when a APS-equipped MBT is operating over urbanised terrain against dispersed irregulars/guerrillas/terrorists (as in the Gaza Strip & inside cities/townships). In a battlefield where two armies are confronting one another, neither APS nor turret-mounted augmented situational awareness systems will provide the desired results over open terrain. Consequently, what is required for enhancing situational awareness is a more formidable situational awareness sensor offering a much wider & deeper field-of-view, like mini-UAVs that can be launched from either MBTs or ICVs. Here are 2 examples that indicate what the future battlefield will be like for mechanised warfare:

Now, coming to TONBO, do augmented situational awareness sensors have any future? Of course they do, again in the Indian context. For instance, they can serve as effective surveillance devices along all the observation posts of the IA & BSF along the IB, WB & LoC/LAC. In addition, such devices are definitely needed for vehicles like MRAPs, MPVs & LSVs of the type used by the IA & CAPF when operating in congested areas/urbanised terrain. Furthermore, such gyro-stabilised devices can also be mounted on the bellies of both fixed-wing transport aircraft & helicopters & UAVs used for aerial transportation, especially those operating in mountainous/thickly forested areas where adverse weather conditions often prevail. If the statement believed to be true, Pakistani will be alerted in advance whenever our Rafale gets airborne against them.

This is with regards to your response to Venky about the Navy's demand for a twin engined fighter. In my openion, the right thing to do will be to develop a twin engined, carrier capable fighter for the Navy, and offer that same fighter to the Air Force instead of developing Tejas Mk2. The Air Force would also prefer a twin engine fighter over single engine Tejas Mk2. Tejas Mk2 is still on drawing board just like the twin engine fighter, so this shouldn't be difficult. And its not without precedent either. The F18 is in use by the US navy, US marines, as well as air forces like those of Canada and Australia. But who will listen to us? Afterall we are nobody. Just some random dudes typing away on the internet.

I feel like it's better to go ahead with MWF as already decided, and let ADA finalize design of AMCA n assemble it within shortest possible time... N yeah all the sensors projected for AMCA must start developing at equal pace now only... I think Multi sensor data fusion can be done with help of ISRO too as they work on such things.
N yeah MWF must include that system which uses all MAWS sensors like IRST so that pilot will have 360° infrared information available to him. I remember u once told about it somewhere, it's a European company product i think.
& Yes a lot systems being finalised for AMCA can be placed and tested on MWF, if it's having space inside it.

The decision of the Indian Army to opt for 360-degree augmented situational awareness systems for T-90 is good but shouldn't they also opt for an Active Protection System ?

I read your explanation that a volley of ATGMs, RPGs might be fired by enemies but an APS could have intercepted a few of them thereby limiting damage. In fact if RPGs hit the Situational Awareness System the tank will find it extremely difficult to escape.

Take bullet proof glass for instance, if a volley of fire is directed against it eventually it will lose its integrity, but it still makes sense to have them to provide some protection.

The aircraft in service with the US Navy and Marine Corps (F/A-18E Super Hornet) is not the same as the aircraft in service with Canada/Australia/Switzerland (F/A-18C Hornet). They are two different beasts. Just as the F-16 Blk 60 in service with the UAE is a very different aircraft from the F-16 Blk 15, for example.

To SIDHARTH: The JY-27A Skywatch-5 radar arrived in Pakistan AFTER June 2019. It is a radar designed for detecting stealthy airborne platforms. It is located in Mianwali air base facing the Durand Line. The IAF does not as yet possess any stealthy airborne platforms. So the JY-27A is not reqd at all for scanning India’s airspace. Instead, the JY-27A by facing the Durand Line indicates that the PAF fears airborne intrusions by stealthy platforms from the direction of Afghanistan. And since the Afghanistan Air Force does not operate any such platforms, the only probability left on the table is the prospect of stealthy aerial platforms (manned or unmanned) taking off from Afghanistan & entering Pakistani airspace for conducting covert aerial recce. And which country owns & operates such stealthy aerial platforms out of Afghanistan? The US.

To VENKY: Both naval guns from OTOBreda & BAE Systems conform to NATO standards & have near-identical performance parameters. Since all such guns have below-deck ammo storage compartments & automated reloading mechanisms, the below-deck compartment housing the elements of such guns have to be tailor-made for accommodating such elements. And since designs for such guns vary, it will be difficult for a vwarship already possessing such guns from Russia to accept guns built to NATO standards.

To PRRANSHU YADAV: If a twin-engined 4th-generation MWF is to be developed, then the developmental effort will last for almost a decade & will clash directly with that of the twin-engined AMCA—a most illogical prospect. Hence, for acquiring a ‘desi’ MWF within a shorter span of time, a single-engined MWF variant that emerges from the R & D and industrial eco-system already in place for the Tejas LCA is the logical logical choice.

To VIKRAM GUHA: All the helmet-mounted night-vision devices, plus the gyro-stabilised/gimballed optronic turrets such as the COMPASS from ELBIT Systems.

To RAT2: Engine time is consumed from the moment the LP/HP compressors start working, meaning from the time engine ignition is activated. Hence, it is the hours of operation that always count, & not the flight-hours of operation. Russia does not supply any turbofans to Pakistan, CATIC of China does. And since the PAF did not possess any tandem-seater JF-17, its pilots had to spend a lot more time learning how to fly the JF-17 single-seater & hence on average a PAF pilot takes more than 3 years to fully transition to & master the JF-17’s flight & systems attributes. In comparison, an IAF pilot with access to any tandem-seat operational conversion trainer (for any frontline combat aircraft) will accomplish a similar feat within 18 months.

To HARSH: Not true at all.

But on the bigger Arjun Mk.1/Mk.1A/Mk.2 their fitments will be possible. But since the MBT’s turret-top is vulnerable to ATGMs & aerial straffing, auggmented situational awareness sensors need to be located along the tutter-sides in a distributed architecture. But then again, these will all add more weight to the MBT while at the same time not increasing the MBT’s survivability to any great extent on the battlefield. In fact, APS will easily be overcome through saturation firepower through shoulder-launched LAWs/RPGs in the initial stages of any contact battle. Hence, APS will be viable ONLY in those urban warfare environments where the MBT is not facing any regular army. In the Indian context, anywhere along the IB, WB & LoC, the maximum depth of the line-of-sight is confined to 700 metres max because the terrain is not flat & is instead filled with vegetation & standing crops. Hence, turret-mounted augmented situational awareness sensors with an effective range of not more than 200 metres become totally useless for MBTs. Instead, mini-UAVs or micro-UAVs launched & controlled from MBTs are far more effective as situational awareness sensors for providing greater range & more early-warning time. And since the IA is most unlikely to send its MBTs inside towns or cities for warfighting, the reqmt for such turret-fitted sensors & APS suites just does not exist. Lastly, Army Aviation assets like LOH/RSH helicopters & LCH-type attack helicopters & Rudra WSH gunships will be on hand to locate & neutralise any dug-in infantry stronghold or bunkers well in advance of any advancing IA MBT troop or squadron. Therefore, in conclusion, augmented situational awareness sensors & APS are effective only when any armoured vehicle has to operate within built-up/urbanised areas & when facing irregular forces like militias & not a regular army.

i have a friend who is teamed up WITH THE IIT GUY WHO TRIED TO MAKE A MOON ROVER .
they make robots etc in bombay . They had made a robot with military application and informed the military higher ups in n delhi . The reply was to bring it to delhi and demonstrate to us free of cost on no commitment basis. The cost works out to to some lacs so they told them to f off .ultimately they came down to bombay and saw it promised and went back and that was the end of it .
cought up in bureaucracy , corruption, no payment for years after delivery ,terrorizing gurantees , ill temper etc.

@just_curious, regarding Ka-226, the French Turbomeca Arrius 2G1 engine could be a showstopper as Russia is under sanctions and the engine cannot be used on Russian military platforms thereby restricting it's use in military roles by the Indian armed forces.

A solution is in sight going by reports coming from Russian sources.
Klimov is working on the VK-800 engine as a direct replacement for the French one on the Ka-226

PAC Kamra has so far overhauled 3 x JF-17 that had entered service with the PAF in 2007. Since this tantamounts to a mid-life refurbishment/overhaul, and also since the JF-17 has been logging in an average of 112 flight-hours per year, this translates into an airframe half-life of 9 years or 108 months or 1,008 flight-hours. Consequently, the total-technical service life of the airframe is 18 years, or 216 months or 2,016 flight-hours. However, the Klimov RD-93 turbofan has a half-life (TBO) of 350 hours, or TTSL of only 700 hours of operation. This in turn means 7 x RD-93 will be required to power each JF-17 throughout its service-life. And to date, only 200 RD-93s have been ordered by AVIC/CATIC from the Moscow-based Chernyshev Machine-Building Plant subsidiary of United Engines Corp (UEC), with an option to procure 300 more. Thus, if this option is exercised, it will give enough RD-93s for powering no more than 110 JF-17s, since some RD-93s will be used by the Myanmar Air Force’s FC-1s, as well as by AVIC/CATIC-owned FC-1 prototypes at Chengdu.

B) construction of nuclear powerpants for trying to compete with India & for satisfying its ego of a national security state that securitises all policymaking. In November 2017, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) signed a cooperation agreement for the construction of a 1,000mW HPR-1000 “Hualong One” reactor costing US$4.3 billion at the Chashma nuclear power plant in Punjab. China is already building two “Hualong One” HPR-1000s with a capacity of 1,100mW each near Karachi, which are expected to become operational in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Pakistan already operates four small 300mW China-supplied CNP-300 two-loop pressurised water reactors at Chashma at a cost of US$1 billion each. And since the IMF’s bailout package is to be used for repaying the short-term loans that China had given to Pakistan, the US is now firmly signalling that this is unacceptable & intolerable, & also indirectly declaring that IMF bailouts will not be usable for sustaining Pakistan’s nuclear WMD arsenals. In fact, a very well-informed senior Chinese scholar recently said in Beijing that China knows Pakistan will never repay those loans, but that such unpaid loans will give China unrestricted leverage indefinitely. In addition, the utterances of China’s Ambassador to Pakistan that “if Pakistan is in need, China will never ask it to repay its loans in time” is precisely what some Pakistani political/military officials negotiating CPEC projects in the first place were counting on. Finally, the creation of a CPEC Authority headed by a ret’d Lt Gen (Aseem Salim Bajwa) by Pakistan means that henceforth the CPEC will be economic just in name & the PA will exercise total control & implementation of all CPEC-specific projects. So at last, the CPEC is now poised to unfold as a full-blown military-industrial venture & nothing else.

PMMW works because objects emit millimeter wave energy, and millimeter wave energy is reflected from the sky. Ground objects have “warmer” emissions compared to the “cold” energy reflected from the sky, and a PMMW sensor can detect the difference in temperature between the runway environment and the surroundings. A caveat that comes with PMMW technology is lower resolution. That’s the nature of millimeter wave. It is not as crisp as a photograph or the eye [natural vision], but you can see through moisture without attenuation or diffraction. The resolution is less crisp so you need image enhancement on the edge to get the corners of the runway more clearly displayed. The Vu Cube weighs less than 30 lbs and measures 17.75 by 9.5 by 10 inches. It mounts inside the aircraft’s radome, but must not be too close to the radar antenna and needs to have a clear forward view at typical approach path angles. The Saab EFVS would be a dual-sensor system, combining EVS and PMMW and displaying the imagery on a head-up display (HUD). There is also the possibility to overlay synthetic vision where one gets a total information situational awareness picture. A Saab EFVS solution could have one or two HUDs, and its HUDs have a large field-of-view of 42 by 28 degrees. The system can be useful not just for takeoff and landing, but in other flight regimes where a high visual advantage is useful.

Yeah i really that 2016 thread, i thought images u uploaded then were part of actual design process by HAL. I remember u told that some American company may join hands with HAL for developing LUH into a high speed helicopter, though i don't know if system will fructify or not, but it happens would be great technological leap... I think once production commences for LUH, HAL may go ahead on those plans including arming LUH with mounted rockets, missiles n machine guns, maws, may be a small radar too...
1) genuinely i hope IAF n IN must ask govt to change radar of current n upcoming MiG 29s to AESA ones as these r really troublesome... Someone from IAF only told me...

For instance, China still remains beholden to Russia for securing its latest weaponry. Here is 1 such example which everyone seems to have glossed over:

Hence, all talk about the USSR invading Pakistan to secure access to the warm waters of the Arabian Sea were 100% LIES being spread at that time by Pakistan. 3) The Harpoons of the IAF & IN are used for maritime-strike & are not configured for land-attack. For the latter mission, AGM-84E SLAM-ERs are reqd, which India does not possess.

To RAT2: The latest developments in Pakistan only drive home the point that there are no laws & regulations for the ruling elite (civil & military) of Pakistan. And that’s because those who drafted the country’s 1973 Constitution themselves were an incompetemt lot. For example, while the Constitution says that the President of Pakistan on the PM’s advice appoints the PA’s COAS, in reality Gen Zia-ul-Haq who was both the President & COAS kept on extending his own tenure as COAS while in power. Gen Musharraf too as President kept on signing documents that extended his appointment as COAS. And Gen Khwaja Ziauddin, who served as the PA’s COAS for only a few hours back in October 1999 after being appointed by then President Rafique Tarar, is today not even mentioned as being a former COAS of the PA! Secondly, none of the Manuals of Pakistan Military Law (MPML) nor the Army Rules & Regulations say a word about the duration/tenure of the PA’s COAS, meaning while everyone below a four-star Gen has a fixed tenure based on his age & period of service up to superannuation, there’s no such limitation for the COAS. This then brings us to differentiating between CONVENTION & LAW. Convention means a practice that is enduring while being unwritten, which applies to only those countries that have unwritten Constitutions. Since Pakistan has a written Constitution/Dastur/Samvidhaan, conventions like a 3-year service tenure for the PA’s COAS do not apply unless this period is specified in written form in the Constitution or the MPML. And since nothing of this sort exists in written form in Pakistan, this is creating the present crisis. In addition, Chief Justice Aasif Khosa has pointed out that the PM had requested a reappointment whereas the President had issued a notification for extension in the PA COAS’ tenure. Furthermore, some more developments are noteworthy:

1) An ordinary citizen like Riaz Hanif Rahi suddenly has had the gall to petition, on grounds of religious faith, the Peshawar High Court against the extension to the PA’s COAS given by PM IAKN on August 19, 2019.

2) Now the Pakistan Bar Association has announced November 28 as a “black day” to protest the PA COAS’ extension!

3) The NAB Chairman has announced his intention to target the PTI regarding corrupt practices.

4) Chief Justice Aasif Khosa, has ticked IAKN off for doubting the credentials of the judiciary by letting Nawaz Sharif off the hook.

5) If Gen Bajwa serves as COAS for another 3 years, promotional prospects for up to 29 top-ranking officers will be affected at a time when by his own admission, his country is in the midst of 5th-gen hybrid war along both Pakistan’s eastern & western fronts. Consequently, at the 226th Corps Commanders’ Conference on November 4, there serious insubordinations by a majority of the 9 Corps Commanders.

So, why is Pakistan’s Judiciary now feel emboldened to absolutely ridicule the PTI-led govt for its inadequacies? Why is Pakistan’s Press suddenly being authorised to report all this is gory detail? Who are the protectors now of the Judiciary & the media? Why did Gen Bajwa not put his foot down & decide to step down on November 29 (his due retirement date)? Is the PA deeply divided now into 2 opposing camps? Will all this cause the PA’s Rawalpindi-based 111 Brigade to mobilise yet again in the next few hours? What we are seeing is the maturing of their civil society and institutions. This is mainly due to the independence of their judges. Their society is still underpinned by tribal, clan and family ties and holds individual courage above all else. These judges are held in awe there.

I am not sure this is a good thing for us, as it will make them more efficient, now that their rulers know that they will be held accountable. They are moving in the right direction.

As for meteor BVRAAM for the KFX-2, since that aircraft will have a South Korea-developed AESA-MMR, sharing of source-codes between MBDA & the South Korean AESA-MMR developer/manufacturer won’t be a problem at all. It will take the LRDE at least another 7 years to fully develop all the operating modes of the Uttam AESA-MMR. Licenced-production of any imported platform, be it a T-90S or Su-30MKI, will always be 2.5 times more expensive than importing such platforms off-the-shelf. Turkey still faces the prospect of sanctions from the US & other NATO member-states.

In simple terms, what needs to be determined is at what age should the PA’s COAS retire from service & what should be his term in office. Now, this has to be reconciled with similar determination of such factors for the PAF’s Chief of the Air Staff & the PN’s Chief of the Naval Staff. After all, all 3 service chiefs are of 4-star rank & therefore their retirement ages & service tenures should be the same & the terms & conditions of service tenure extension should azpply to all 3 of them. This portion of the dilemma has not yet been touched upon, either by the SCP or by any of the so-called independent journalists of Pakistan. In other words, no one in Pakistan has as yet grasped the full implications of the Pandora’s Box now being opened, since this will lead to several more boxes being opened. And this will continue to happen several times more because Pakistan continues to function as a national security state & therefore cannot be compared to India in any form & under any category, since the latter is a pluralistic welfare state. you mentioned about the novelty from China, the drone inhibitor. That may have its use as an individual sentry on duty protecting a specific target.

But in view of the Saudi Refinery attack or the drone drops in Punjab, this system has sub-optimal use. On the other hand, I saw the demo of this firm and this looks to be the kind of solution that India needs in the coming days of drone challenge.

I agree that my view is simplistic. It has to be if looking at this from say 50k feet and seeing the direction of the flow. This is also something the article by Justice Markandey Katju says. He writes:

Normally this could have led to instability there. This time, nothing, nada, zilch. In fact going by their and international press they are beginning to understand that this is the path to maturity and improvement of their governance. Pak has entered a new era. This will have great impact.

I wouldn't want to compare them to us, as each nation that wakes up, makes its own path to governance maturity. We were light years ahead of them, yet today we have a SC that is afraid to take up cases that have political impact and our governance practices are going backwards.

Hmm so Russian AESA tech needs further maturity n improvement. Sir i had revisited your thread of Tejas to MWF saga, while reading out data i got few confusion. Kindly clarify that.
1) since all up weight now may go upto 18.5 tons as u told due to obvious reasons, and f414 engine might get replaced by F414-EPE rated at max 116KN, so can we see increase in Internal fuel capacity from 3300kg to even more to cater for extra thrust of engine which obviously will consume more fuel??? If yes then what would be new capacity? I think 3800kg at least would be great.
2) the IRST being developed will be of latest tech by that time?? Range>=150km, better image processing etc.
3) using adequate Multi ejector weapon pods for MWF. . . With one 800L centreline supersonic fuel tank or 2 LRAAMs/1ASM then starting from wing tips total 4 CCMs + 1jammer on counter weight points + 3/2 BVRAAMs each on next two points on both wings then on remaining 2 points ( nearest to fuselage ) 2 LRAAMS or 4/6/8 BVRAAMs or 2/4ASMs or 2 / 4LGB or jammers or targeting pod or AAMs or bombs etc on last two fuselage points. Is it even possible for it to fully take this much load n fly from apt base n conduct missions managing medium to large drag penalty??
4) in case if above config is fully non manageable then what will be max and best possible AtoA, AtoG, AtoSea config for it with and without 1 external fuel tank???
5) for 116KN engine air intakes gonna be more large in same curved design or some new design like that of which GE suggested in 80-90s who's pic u have uploaded in that thread??

Our bureaucracy does represent red-tape, else India is in fine fettle. Pakistan has a stronger military, national security state & this power comes at the cost of their political pillar. The judiciary too is largely pliant. As Pakistan increasingly becomes a Army managed state while other institutions either away, become ineffective; India should be pleased & continue to take steps which will push them further down that way. India's prosperity & peace is helped by a weak & unstable Pakistan probably controlled by China. Their feudal mindset & the irrational expectation that jingoistic individualism brings about change is excellent for India. Here's wishing the worst for Pakistan & Pakistanis. To ARPIT KANODIA: That’s because the GHQ has traditionally defined the threat perceptions & higher directions of war since 1947, with the PN HQ & PAF HQ not even being called in to give their inputs. And that’s why even today neither the PN nor the PAF have any proven nuclear WMD assets & all the missiles paraded every year as ‘strategic weapons’ are all owned, controlled & operated by the PA, with the PAF’s cruise missiles only being labelled as ‘nuclear-capable’. The term ‘Hybrid War’ became fashionable to use in Pakistan AFTER this term was first used by former IA COAS Gen (Ret’d) Bikram Singh in several of his TV interviews since late 2016.

To PARTHASARATHI: These are routine fleet renewal programmes under which a new airliner replacs an existing airliner, i.e. the existing airliner is traded away under a fair-price buy-back scheme worked out by the airline (INDIGO) & the OEM (Airbus Aircraft). The ‘desi patrakaars’ are still speculating about Spike ATGM. As I had explained above, ATGMs with shaped-charge warheads cannot be used for destroying bunkers made of concrete & reinforced with steel. For destroying such structures, thermobaric warheads are reqd.

To KANE: No one here has ever claimed or stated that such Drone Inhibitor guns are meant for wide-area protection use. That’s why I had specifically mentioned the SPG. Lone-acts like drone air-drops across the IB or LoC can easily be countered by the Drone Inhibitor. But when drones get equipped with inertial navigation systems, autopilots & terminal guidance sensors, they then cease to be drones & instead become autonomous cruise missiles of the type used to attack the ARAMCO oil refinery. And it is for this very reasons that such drones also come under the ambit of the MTCR regime.

To HARDIK THANKI: It is called non-lapsable defence modernisation fund, which was first introduced into the union budget back in 2004. It was the UPA-1 that, after coming to power in mid-2004, unashamedly scrapped it, which resulted in severe & mounting backlogs in procurement exercises.

To RAT2: The instability has already begun between the three armed services of Pakistan, since the PAF & PN are claiming equality with the PA. These rumblings will come out in the open & will be full-blown once the National Assembly in Pakistan begins debating the issue since what is to be determined is not just the service tenure of the PA’s COAS, but also his salary, perks & allowances. On top of that, what has emerges is that the MPML, Army Act & ARR are all documents whose contents are not even known to the SCP since they’re deemed as being TOP SECRET & are consequently locked up inside the JAG Branch in the GHQ!!! So, just wait for all this to come out in the open & then the inter-services rivalries in that country will become full-blown for everyone to witness. The real hurricane therefore has yet to make its presence felt. Nor is there any shred of truth in your perception that the Indian SC that is afraid to take up cases that have political impact and India’s governance practices are going backwards. In fact, exactly the opposite holds true. In fact, no one in Pakistan has to date even filed a petition with any court that asks for restitution for the damage caused to 200+ non-Muslim places of worship in late 1992 after the Babri Masjid demolition in India. That’s how Riyaasat-e-Medina is defined in Pakistan.

But since the MWF will have aerial refuelling probe, there’s no need at all for substantial increase in internal fuel capacity. 2) Obviously any ‘desi’ IRST sensor being developed will not be the best of the best, i.e. it will not have the same performance parameters as that of the F-35 JSF’s EOIRST sensor. 3) Yes it is, provided a 110kN-thrust with afterburning turbofan is used. 4) No aircraft in the world when fully armed with A-to-G PGMs can engage in dogfights. 5) The air-intake inlets will be larger in size, since the entire airframe will be larger as well. 6) Central processors of nternal jammers are always mounted behind the cockpit section. The ones on the top tail-section & wingtips are only apertures for transmitters/receivers. 7) What for? Isn’t an aerial refuelling probe available? 8) Yes. 9) There’s no need, since even present-day SRAAMs are super-manoeuvrable. That’s why over the past 20 years, gun-kills during air combat have hardly taken place.

To SUSAN: No one in India uses Kornet-E ATGMs. Only Milan-2T, Nag & Konkurs-Mare in the operational ATGM inventory.

7) CFTs for increasing the loiter timing in case of CAPs or increase range in case of Balakot types deep penetration strike missions as placing a mid air refueler near a combat zone like Kashmir would be very risky.
Rafale too have provisions to employ 2 CFTs of 2300L/1816kg each increasing its in flight duration/range to almost double.
Last time I had a chat with Deb Rana about MWF at d time when u uploaded MWF thread, he was of different opinion then you. He said we are going ahead with 98KN engine option, i really felt very bad for MWF. I replied him saying sir again u r developing an underpowered jet that too when u have everything in hand ryt now only. He didn't said anything in reply. If it's actually happening then i request u to intervene through most effective possible way to press them against an underpowered engine n get it changed. Hope by IAF way.

Tata is known to be developing a tracked version of Kestrel, i saw its pic somewhere under testing.

T-90S when powered by a 1,350hp engine will be more than a match of any MBT fielded by the PA. Nag ATGMs are already entering service now & initial order is only for 460+ missiles.

To SUJIT: NAMICA isn’t APC or ICV. Hence, the additional vehicles to be deployed will be ICVs like BMP-2s. And how can GTRE only now commence R & D on afterburner technology when it has been showing the Kaveri year after year since 2009 equipped with afterburner at every Aero India expo?

To ASHISH GAUTAM: Whenever any MRCA is equipped with CFTs, it becomes like a brick & loses agility. And unlike underwing fuel tanks that can be jettisioned, CFTs cannot. Hence, it is better for MRCAs like Rafale or MWF to have underwing fuel tanks or aerial refuelling probes, instead of CFTs. Aerial refuelling tankers never operate close to contest airspaces & instead are positioned well into the rear because they need tgo refuel only those combat aircraft that are heavily loaded & therefore have employed full afterburners when taking off, which increases fuel consumption. Similarly, CAPs are nowadays not reqd since sufficient numbers of early-warning sensors (ground-based & airborne) are available, unlike the 1960s & 1970s. Hence, in the IAF’s case, aerial refuelling tankers will be made available for only those MRCAs that will undertake strike or tactical interdiction operations, & not air-defence operations. TATA is not developing any tracked APC or ICV. Vijayantas & T-55s are all being replaced by T-90S. The T-72ms are all being upgraded, not replaced. What is reqd today are not heavier ICVs, but FSCVs like BMPT-T Terminator. But you are cracking your head on the wrong issues. Instead, you should be concerned about this:

No.45 ‘Flying Daggers’ Sqn shifted from Bengaluru (where it was since July 2016) to Sulur air base in Coimbatore (under the Thiruvananthapuram-based HQ Southern Air Command) in July 2018. But the first of eight Tejas Mk.1 tandem-seaters will be delivcered only in 2021. Training of pilots to fly the Tejas Mk.1 is now restricted to fixed-base simulators and a couple of so-called “instrumented aircraft” (PV-5 & PV-6)—all at the Bengaluru-based Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA). Consequently, IAF pilots have to shuttle between Sulur (in Tamil Nadu) and Bengaluru to train. Both the simulator and the PV-5 & PV-6 aircraft are the property of the DRDO and IAF can only use the aircraft when they are not being used by ADA. The IAF had asked for the four Tejas Mk.1 tandem-seaters under IOC (Initial Operational Clearance) configuration to be capable of refuelling mid-air. Fighter flying has a syllabus, which cannot be done on a FMS (which too is reqd, but is still unavailable). How does one supervise the flying of a youngster without flying with him on a tandem-seater? The IAF is now posting only qualified flight instructors and fight combat leaders to Tejas squadron because it cannot risk young pilots flying the single-seaters. Also, pilots going on leave or courses need to revalidate themselves when join back the squadron, how can these be done without a tandem-seat trainer?

HAL forwarded (November 2006) a proposal for manufacture and supply of Full Mission Simulator (FMS) in respect of LCA to Air HQ. While the proposal was pending for clearance by MoD, ADA sanctioned (July 2010) a project to Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bangalore to upgrade the existing Real Time Simulator (RTS) at their end to the standard of FMS at a cost of Rs.4.50 crore in order to meet the training requirements of IAF pilots. In response to an audit observation (September 2014) regarding the status of FMS, ADE stated (October 2014) that the existing RTS had been upgraded to FMS and was being used by NFTC/HAL test pilots for evaluation and training. When present position of HAL’s proposal for supply of FMS submitted (November 2006) to Air HQ was enquired (February 2015) in audit, Air HQ stated (February 2015) that though technical evaluation of HAL’s proposal had been accepted by MoD, a case for procurement of FMS from ADE is being processed as per the decision taken (July 2014) in the Empowered Committee. Thus, IAF would be using the RTS upgraded as FMS at ADE in Bemgaluru, till a full fledged FMS is manufactured by HAL and supplied for the usage at Sulur.

Likewise, the shore-based test facility (SBTF) at the INS Hansa naval air station in Goa too is devoid of the LCA (Navy) Mk.1 Engineer-in-loop Simulator (ELS) like the one belonging to ADA. This then makes the task of validating the aircraft’s flight-control logic extremely cumbersome & time-consuming. Unless such elementary shortcomings are urgently addressed, it will be impossible to develop the Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TED-BF) that is now being touted by ADA.

N yes TEDBF is utter waste of time... Better buy 57+45 RAFALE-M from France n make subsequent changes in Vikramaditya as well as IAC-1 for housing these Rafale in its hangers...
N MiG29k should be used for shore based duty. Even if ordered today these Rafale will come after 3-5 years only in that time hope we will get our IAC. Migs are really headache.
1)Will it be possible to run Vikramaditya on IEP by high torque, high capacity servo motors eradicating huge n heavy reduction gear boxes??
2) it's steam generation plant work on what fuel??

The IA will not order T-90MS & rumours about a T-90MS procurement were initiated by the ‘Bandalbaaz’ writing for BUSINESS STANDARD. And exactly what will be achieved by locally producing such engines, apart from costing far more than imported ones? Don’t you know that none of the gearboxes of either the T-72M or the T-90S have ever been produced by anybody in India? That’s indigenisation for you, as defined by successive Govts of India, i.e. fooling Indian citizens by peddling FAKE NEWS about indigenisation. It is undeniably true that the Novator 3M54E/3M-14E missiles are far cheaper than BrahMos-1 when installed on Project 1135.6 & Project 17 FFGs. As for the LPD, the most practical/pragmatic approach would have been to modify & compress the design of the Project 71 IAC-1 into a LPH-type vessel, since LPHs won’t carry any combat aircraft, only helicopters. This then enables the aircraft storage deck’s size to be reduced & accommodate the well reqd for housing both hovercraft & armoured vehicles. This modification can easily done with the help of OEMs like Spain’s NAVANTIA. I had stated this to the IN & CSL way back in 2014 & it appears that finally the IN is giving this unsolicited proposal a serious thought.

To SATYAKI: I’m afraid that appears to be a tall order, as explained by Dr Anil Kakodkar in his book FIRE & FURY, where he details how administrative & management practices in the West are trust-based, whereas those in India are based on distrust. That’s why one will never find entities like Vigilance Cells & Central Vigilance Commissions in the West.

To ASHISH GAUTAM: 1) No, because IEP functions best when using marine industrial gas-turbines, not steam-generating boilers of the type on INS Vikramaditya. 2) Diesel-burning. 4) They are not under-armed at all. Their armaments package is more than enough to deter India’s regional adversaries. 5) IEP-based powerpacks cannot be installed during MLUs & hence they can be installed only on those warships that have been designed from the outset to accommodate such powerpacks. 6) All those day-dreaming about TEDBF emerging by 2025 will go into irreversible mental depression very soon, rest assured. Designing any aircraft takes at least 6 years of work-effort, following by another four years for building the first prototype.

To AMIT BISWAS & RAJESH MISHRA: I’m not hinting anything, just stating a commonsensical fact-of-life, i.e. it will be totally iompossible to fund the development of a twin-engined MWF & also developing a twin-engined MWF defeats the very purpose of developing a single-engined MWF that is first & foremost supposed to be cheaper than imported options. Hence, on the financial front alone, a twin-engined MWF becomes an impossibility. The single-engined MWF’s detailed design began back in 2016 & its final design configuration will be frozen only late next year. Its first prototype will be rolled out only by 2024. Hence, all those day-dreaming now about TEDBF emerging by 2025 will go into irreversible mental depression very soon, rest assured. Designing any aircraft takes at least 6 years of work-effort, following by another four years for building the first prototype. The KRONOS is a tactical gapfiller air-defence radar & Bangladesh is procuring these for use against Myanmar, which procures such radars from China. And since China wholeheartedly supports Myanmar on the Rohingya issue, Bangladesh has no other choice but to procure vital force-multiplier hardware from non-China sources.

To AMIT BISWAS & ANUP: A very interesting report indeed. Now let’s dissect it for detailed analysis. But do also bear in mind that I had several times before questioned the decision of both the IAF & IA not to subject the Akash-1 to user-trials under varying types of terrain & climatic conditions (why always fire Akash-1s only from the ITR at Chandipur?). Now, this isn’t the first time that such serviceability issues have arisen. In fact, back in February 2011 at the Aero India expo, an IAF officer had given a scathing presentation on the unserviceability of the Rohini 3-D CAR. Remember? Maybe that presentation uploaded on YouTube is still there. Broadly, there are 2 primary issues involved: 1) Fixing product liability responsibility. 2) Fixing serviceability-related issues.

For the 1st issue, I myself was horrified when I was hold by BDL back in February 2011 that BEL would be the prime contractor/systems integrator for the first production batch of the complete Akash-1 system, while BDL will be the prime contractor/systems integrator for the following production batches. This practice is unheard off & has no parallels anywhere else in the world. Hence, the non-compliance with product warranty clauses & delays in spares support are all due to the divided responsibilities (that too for identical job taskings) of BEL & BDL. For the 2nd issue, all the hardware-related flaws point toward the lack of product engineering inputs/data-points during the Akash-1’s developmental phase, i.e. although the systems design was perfect & flawless, the Akash-1s of both the IAF & IA were never subjected to all-weather mobility/durability trials under varying weather conditions & over varying types of terrain. This also means that field mobility/transportation trials too were inadequately conducted. What ALL THESE add up to is the lack of RUGGEDNESS of the final end-product, be it a missile, or a TEL or a missile transloader. The listed component & sub-systems failures all point towards very limited service-lives due to them being exposed to operating conditions & practices that were never subjected to during the R & D phase. And since agencies like CEMILAC & DGQA are primarily responsible for the overall quality assurance of the final end-product, they should be held primarily accountable. In addition, both the IA’s MGO Branch & the IAF HQ’s Guided Weapon Maintenance Dept must be asked why were the Akash-1’s user-evaluations/firing trials conducted only from the ITR at Chandipur, & not from firing ranges located in Ladakh, Sikkim, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh & Pokhran in Rajasthan. It will thus emerge that PRODUCT RUGGEDISATION was never even considered an issue by both the IA & IAF, which is surprising because the IA & IAF have always insisted on their ‘desi’ weapons platforms like Arjun MBT & Tejas LCA to be subjected to the extremes of weather & altitude during their product-development phases.

One can now only hope that the correct conclusions will be drawn & lessons learnt will be applied on to projects like the QR-SAM & MR-SAM projects. If not, then history will yet again repeat itself.

the global 6000 seems to be a good choice for a quick gap filler for us , rather than twiddling the thumb and wait for decision and some one again getting a bribe and stopping the awacs altogether . Bhadurai is smart he says the desi aawacs is good enough . I belive the range and staying power of the global 6000 is suitable .

The drdo definately must have tweaked the sysytem all these years and improved the range and we can make a similar system with the aesa maritime radar from israel.

But can we make the software to do gound target MTI as the swedes have done?

can we fo the GAN based trx for the near future awacs/

To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) No one builds MiG-21s anymore nor offers MRO facilities for such aircraft. 2) The Ardiden-1H/Shakti engine can always be uprated to produce more power. Ka-92 is no longer a concept since Russia has already begun prototype development. 3) All these cost money , which isn’t available now. 4) Only the nose-section of the Dassault Falcon is being built in Nagpur. In addition, to modify the Falcon into a multi-sensor platform will be cost-prohibitive as a first-of-type platform, whereas both the EMB-145 & Bombardier 6000 have already been modified & will therefore cost far less. 5) MWF will take another 10 years to reach the IAF. So what happens in between?

To AMIT BISWAS: No one will share their hard-won IPRs & hence every licence-manufactured MRCA will be as expensive as the Rafale, since the IAF wants product guarantees & assured product-support of the type not available to the Su-30MKIs.

Back in 2012, I was told by LRDE & CABS technocrats at the DEFEXPO-2012 expo that the eight-metre long L-STAR S-band active phased-array radar shown below (whose 6-metre long derivative will go on board the EMB-145 AEW & CS) is presently being used for developing new algorithms that will enable this type of radar to undertake interleaved airspace surveillance and maritime surveillance tasks. At the same time, this radar has already demonstrated its ability to operate in a dedicated ground moving target designation mode. According to the LRDE officials who briefed me about the L-STAR’s future growth plans, future projections call for a wide-bodied aircraft to be equipped with, on one hand a roof-mounted AESA antenna capable of interleaved airspace/maritime surveillance; and a belly-mounted X-band AESA antenna for air-to-ground battlespace surveillance inclusive of real-time ground moving target designation. Additionally, by using SATCOM-based data-links, such platforms will also be able to act as airborne control stations for MALE-UAVs, thereby doing away with the need for two-way ground-based line-of-sight ground control stations for such MALE-UAVs. But very little has come through as advancements till to date. In my view, such multi-sensor platforms using airframes like Bombardier 6000 can be used by the IAF, IN & ICGS. Algorithms for various functions have already been developed.

To VED: because the Akash-1 cannot be modified to become a cannister-launched SAM. In addition, the Barak-8 is already available as a cannister-launched MR-SAM. The 6,00km-range SLBM is still in the design stage & right now even the K-4 SLBM has not yet completed its developmental stage & that’s why INS Arihant & INS Arighaat will not be configured for carrying the K-4. Only the third such SSBN (S-4) will be equipped with VLS cells for housing the K-4s.

I think the way forward is to go the global 6000 way instad of arguing with russia for their rusty old il-76 airframes and getting caught int their web for spares and other reliabliity propblems .
As for the front section radar coverage a proven aesa radar like the 2052 with a large aperture for the front installed in the nose should do the job. Only a 60 degree cone at he back will be blind , but that is acceptable .

or is it possible to make a large antenna for the front nose cone ,using the same modules of the lstar and use the existing hardware in a time sharing mode?

other wise the mechanical risk of and cost and time of trying to put a rotodome on a A 330 , flight test it ,is cost prohibitive and a large target as well . The gloabal can be put in a hangar too.

i do remember drdo was making a maritme planar aray radar ? what ever happened to it ?. If the lstar antenna is capable of interleaving maritime search as well, then we dont need a dedicated maritme radar . from what you said the lstar antenna is bigger ie 24 ft compared to the 16 ft of the present radar which will give us more aperture thus power and range and discrimination as well ? correct? will it be a problem to mount the bigger antenna on the global 6000.? What was cabs idea in making a large 24 ft antenna/
