Updated GoogleEarth imagery has
nolw revealed the scales of field deployment of the PLAGF Ground Forces’ two
warfighting formations now deployed in eastern Ladakh—the South Xinjiang
Military District’s Kashgar-based 6 Highland Mechanised Infantry Division and
the Aksu-based 4 Highland Motorised
Infantry Division.
The highest concentration of
forces has been in the area east of Chushul astride the Spanggur Gap, i.e. the
area between the south bank of Panggong Tso Lake and the Spanggur Tso Lake.
However, such a concentration over such a small area also becomes highly vulnerable
to fire-assaults and effect-based operations by offensive firepower. Consequently,
such a deployment by the PLAGF defies all military logic and therefore was
unlikely to be pushed into combat of any kind.
Coming next is the concentration
of forces in the Depsang Plains east of Burtse and the DBO ALG. And following
that comes the Gogra-Hot Springs area, and then Demchok.
Meanwhile, the updated
GoogleEarth imagery of Ngari-Gunsa Airport shows the on-going construction of
up to 16 storm-shelters for housing MRCAs.
Also uploaded is the image of
a bridge constructed by the BRO in the middle of last year for facilitating the
entrance of India’s ground forces into the Galwan River-Valley.

No self-respecting ground force will stay deployed in such concentration over such a limited area for eight long months as this will give the attacker more than enough time to not just pinpoint & target such areas & asstes, but also present enough time to muster forces both both defence & offense, which is exactly what the IA has done. To RAGHU: There are a number of inaccuracies. For starters, MDO does not replace NCO, but MDO makes greater use of NCO through what is now known as UBIQUITOUS COMPUTING. Secondly, the US Indo-Pacific Commander spoke only about China going to war with Taiwan within 6 years, not with India. Thirdly, A2AD is a US-origin warfighting concept. China did not invent it. Fourthly, China has thus far developed only hypersonic glide weapons, not the kind of missiles powered by hypersonic propulsion systems of the type already in the possession of both the US & Japan & which can be launched by MRCAs. Fifthly, China is still decades away from fielding lethal autonomous weapons of the type that can be launched by MRCAs. Even its existing subsonic long-range cruise missiles can’t operate in the terrain-avoidance mode & consequently have to cruise at medium altitudes. Sixthly, even diffused bases are static in nature & hence can be targetted by missile-based fire-assaults. Hence, the US has no intention of creating any kind of diffused bases & is instead focussing more on missile defence systems using directed-energy weapons. Seventhly, the PLA is several decades behind the US & NATO in the arena of intelligentised warfighting, both due to the paucity of skilled human resources & the absence of AI-enabled hardware, especially the 4-nano-metre microchips reqd for such hardware. China’s semiconductor industry has been able to produce only 14-nano-metre microchips, not even the 14-nano-metre chips available five years ago. Lastly, technology will never replace human soldiers in combat, nor would there would be little bloodshed and violence. This was not the case thousands of years ago when the Mahabharata war was fought with ‘Brahmastra’ weapons, nor will it be the case in future. But yes, China certainly will try to avoid bloodshed & violence due to its aversion to accepting casualties (thanks to its one-child policy) & will therefore resort to coercive tactics by weaponising everything at its disposal, like engaging in lopsided bilateral trade activities. Consequently, the prime challenge for the QUAD will be to redraft those WTO regulations & rules that have since 2001 given China a terribly unfair trading advantage. This an only this will reduce China’s existing prowess as an economic powerhouse. And this can be achieved only through the projection of the QUAD’s soft powers, not the already dominating hard power.
IN any case, it is now impossible to make peace with China because China has officially published several papers through its state-owned think-tanks which clearly state that the clash between China & India was inevitable since 1949, & was never a recent phenomenon. Hence, anyone who thinks that one can still make peace with China & remain independent at the same time is only engaging in wishful thinking.

It is the first radar system in India realized for tracking space debris. It is commissioned and made operational on March 2015. MOTR had a dedicated space debris tracking campaign on July – August 2016 and tracked 51 different space objects during the campaign. From then MOTR is regularly being used for tracking various space debris.

MOTR is a civilian purpose radar and by size not a mobile radar like the one proposed by Raytheon

Wo'nt it be easier to set up MOTR type radars along the coast (SHAR+1 or 2 other locations) and test long range missiles over lofted trajectories at shorter range over the sea? China seems to test all its BMs (incl. DF-41) inland from Taiyuan to Xinjiang with the tested range no more than 2500 km (even for a 12000 km BM). This would avoid difficulties like stabilizing large radars like the MOTR on a ship.

To SATYAKI: One must not get confused between mobile LRTRs & static LRTRs for ballistic missile early-warning. Radars like Green Pine & MOTR are used for providing early-warning during wartime, and can also be transported to theatres over land & sea that require coverage, as in the case of flight-tests of ICBMs & SLBMs. They can also be deployed at sea during wartime but for limited periods only. Hence, their employment timeframes are limited. The static LRTRs on the other hand are designed for providing airspace surveillance 24/7 & for 365 days a year. Consequently, the best solution is to procure both types of LRTRs. China has also fired its SLBMs from the Bohai Sea out to Xinjiang.

1. The Akash NG is in the same category as the MRSAM/LRSAM built with Israel (Barak-8).
2. Based on the test laich pics, it also claims at same time that it's not Vertically Launched with its set of advantages (lower wt.?!) & disadvantages (more missiles & launchers).
3. What's curious is the claim of AESA Radar/Sensor on the launch vehicle itself ( based on image) Isn't that contradictory in itself. How can this be physically possible even with a dualpulse rocket motor?!

How much airborne intelligence gathering were the Chinese doing and what are the consequences for IA and IAF. Does this not give them a significant advantage since they now know the IAF & IA deployment methodology and tactics which they can then anticipate the next time they want to put us under pressure. The Akash-NG being an E-SHORADS cannot be compared to either Barak-8 or Barak-8ER. Instead, it can be compared with the Barak MRAD variant. Vertical-launch saves time for only MR-SAMs & LR-SAMs. For quick-reaction SAMs, it does not confer any specific advantages & hence even NASAMs & Pantsyr do not possess vertical-launch capability. Even Pantsyr contains both the target detection radar & target engagement radar in one single vehicle along with the SAM launchers. The older OSA-AK SHORADS too had a similar configuration.
To HOODS007: The DRDO-developed L-band HPR is meant only for airspace surveillance & detection/tracking of manned & unmanned aerial platforms like MRCAs & UAVs. New-generation HPRs meant for BMD-related early warning can be of the S-band or L-band or UHF-band types, but HPRs conducting both early-warning & target engagement functions require to be of the dual-band type, i.e. S-band & X-band. To KAUSTAV: VMT. The SHORADS reqmts of the 3 armed services vary & hence the existence of QR-SAM, SR-SAM & LL-QRM reqmts. Consequently, one size can never fit all--this being the logical conclusion. The principal role of the LR-SAM & MR-SAM is airspace denial, i.e. forcing the enemy's strike package to either abort or climb down to far lower altitudes. Consequently, the prime role of the SHORADS is to destroy the airborne targets & hence it will be the most prolific of all SAM-types, for both shooting down standoff PGMs as well as hostile combat aircraft.

Foundations for last month’s ceasefire along the LoC were laid during a series of one-on-one secret meetings between senior intelligence officers at a London hotel in 2018. The meetings were authorised by Pakistan’s COAS, Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, and India’s National Security Advisor (NSA), Ajit Doval. Involving a polo-playing General from an aristocratic family, and an ethnic Tamil career intelligence officer responsible for espionage operations targetting Pakistan, the talks began months after Prime Minister Imran Khan took office in 2018.The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)-Research & Analysis Wing (R & AW) channel was shut down in 2019 after a terrorist attack in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pulwama brought India and Pakistan to the edge of war. Inside months, however, both countries agreed to revive the secret talks, as leaders in the two capitals explored means to minimise the risk of a full-scale war. Both officers have since retired from service, and have been replaced with new representatives. The revelation of the secret India-Pakistan channel comes amidst reports that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) helped facilitate the dialogue that led up to the ceasefire beginning February 25. “Lots of foreign capitals have encouraged India-Pakistan peace, but the process has been led by the two countries, not external actors.” Gen Bajwa’s October 2018 visit to London, where he met with the United Kingdom’s CDS, Gen Nicholson Carter, and National Security Adviser, Mark Sedwill, appears to have crystallised the idea to reduce the risk that nuclear-armed India and Pakistan might enter a crisis through missteps or miscalculations. The Pakistan Army had been reaching out to the United Kingdom since at least 2017, seeking its support to improve the country’s relationship with the United States and with India. Gen Bajwa argued that peace with India was needed to support his efforts to cut defence spending, and permanently shut down jihadist groups. Late that month, the ISI had reached out to India, saying it had been authorised by the PA’s COAS to seek negotiations. Following this first contact, ISI and R & AW officials met at least three times, discussing concerns over terrorism and risk-reduction measures. Ending firing at LoC—thus re-instituting a ceasefire that was agreed on in 2002 but had slowly unravelled—was among the ideas the General representing ISI pushed for. At the time, the UK was the only western country showing any interest in serious engagement with Pakistan. Gene Bajwa, interestingly, also has personal links to the UK, which is home to his sister-in-law, Asma Bajwa, and brothers Tariq Bajwa and Javaid Bajwa. Few in New Delhi believed the secret channel would make progress, even though it had the direct support of the PA. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made considerable efforts to push forward the peace process, even making a surprise visit to Lahore in December 2015 to attend the wedding of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s granddaughter. The effort had, however, imploded in the face of resistance from the PA. Early in 2016, after terrorists targeted the IAF air base in Pathankot, Prime Minister Sharif proved unable to deliver on promises to act against its perpetrators, the Jaish-e-Muhammad. Later that year, India reacted to another terrorist attack, this time in Uri, by hitting back across LoC. Late in 2017, Pakistan’s National Security Advisor, Ret’d Lt Gen Nasser Khan Janjua, secretly met with Doval in Bangkok, hoping to avert a further deterioration in the relationship. The last-ditch effort failed.

Following the February 2019 terrorist bombing in Pulwama—which led to IAF air-strikes against a JeM seminary in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Balakot, and retaliatory bombing across LoC by Pakistan—the London dialogue came to an end. There just didn’t seem any point in continuing the negotiations. The PA, though, soon moved to try to re-open the door. Late in the summer, it shared warnings on terrorist attacks through the CIA, and acted against the leadership of several jihadist groups. Alarmed by the risk of war, moreover, several countries with good relationships with India began nudging New Delhi towards talks. Last year, the UAE’s ambassador to New Delhi said that while the Emirate did not seek to mediate between India and Pakistan, it had offered “words of wisdom” on the need for peaceful relations. Gen Bajwa used another visit to London in June 2019 to ask interlocutors in the UK to persuade New Delhi to re-open the secret channel. Even though politicians in Pakistan unleashed a barrage of hostile polemic against India following the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019, jihadist groups across the LoC were continued to be muzzled, and violence remained in decline. This alone gave enough reason to re-open the secret dialogue. Even though the scepticism remained, it was also clear there was nothing much to be lost. Islamabad’s decision to demonstrate military restraint during the recent crisis along the LoC with China was a decisive factor in pushing India towards agreeing towards a ceasefire. The fact that there was no hostile troop movement by the PA deepened confidence in Gen Bajwa’s message. R & AW-ISI secret channels, interestingly, played a key role in bringing about the original ceasefire along LoC in 2003. In the wake of the 2002 India-Pakistan near-war, then R & AW Secretary C D Sahai, and his ISI counterpart, Lt Gen Ehsan-ul-Haq, met regularly to stitch up a ceasefire on LoC. Sahai is reputed to have also passed on intelligence, gathered by Indian communications intelligence, of a plot to assassinate Gen Musharraf by a faction of the JeM—a warning the ISI ignored, to its cost. Earlier Prime Ministers also relied on R & AW to conduct secret diplomacy on their behalf. In 1987, for example, then R & AW Secretary A N Verma and ISI-DG Lt Gen Hamid Gul met to discuss Khalistan terror, in talks brokered by Jordan. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Gen Musharraf also operated a secret channel, using diplomats Satinder Lambah and Tariq Aziz, to craft an arrangement that would institutionalise the LoC as a border, but make it irrelevant, like the one that divides the two sides of Ireland. The eventual outcome of the negotiations R & AW has conducted are far from clear and there’s still a pretty wide gulf between what New Delhi is willing to do on Kashmir and what Islamabad would be willing to live with. The next steps might be a normalisation in the diplomatic relationship, and perhaps some sporting events. There’s no desire in either capital, though, to rush things.

So, when Pakistan makes an offer for trade access to the CARs for India & it remains unquestioned or uncontested by India’s MEA, this only means that such access will have to be provided via GB, i.e. India will have to accept Pakistan usurping PoK for good. To JUST_CURIOUS: If the BrahMos-NG will be lighter than the BrahMos-A that the Su-30MKI can already carry, then there’s no room for any objection by the IAF for BrahMos-NG. To RAGHU: The IN has experience of only operating & maintaining the Project 971 SSGN INS Chakra. The design data of this SSGN was neither offered by Russia nor was it asked by India. And since an existing SSGN design like that of the S-2/Arihant can easily be modified into an SSN design, the re-design & re-engineering effort will be risk-free. In addition, due to this all the existing Indian industrial vendors that have already been certified by the Russian OEMs as qualified equipment suppliers will find it easier & cheaper to supply the reqd hardware to the Vizag-based SBC for final-assembly. Were new brand-new SSN design were to be chosen from another foreign SSN designer/developer, then it would have involved a 15-year delay in the SSN procurement effort, since all the selected Indian industrial vendors would have been reqd to get re-certified yet again by a totally group of foreign OEMs, i.e. a very costly & time-consuming re-inventing of the wheel.
To JOYDEEP GHOSH: LoLz! If you keep on insisting that 2+2 equals either 3 or 5, then there’s nothing I can do to make you read the writing on the wall. Hence, this is the last time I will repeat the explanations: 1, 2 & 3: The Mirage-2000UPGs have a totally IAF-specific mission avionics package that includes several core avionics LRUs like the mission computer that are totally different from those of the UAEAF’s Mirage-2000s. Even the weapon systems specified & integrated are totally different. The similarity therefore exists only in terms of external looks & powerplant. Furthermore, if what you insist to suggest were to be a possibility, then France would never have proposed back in 2007 that the IAF get rid of all its existing Mirage-2000s in favour of 40 Rafales. I had already devoted a thread to this a couple of years ago. 4 & 6) You need to find out why is the US talking about CAATSA only in relation to the S-400 LR-SAM propcurement & is not raising the CAATSA issue regarding other Indian military hardware procurements from Russia, such as additional MiG-29UPGs & Su-30MKIs & the 4 additional Project 1135.6 FFGs. 5) One Rafale can carry 9 tonnes of armaments, versus only 4 tonnes by a Mirage-2000. 7) The shortfall within the IAF is not of MRCAs capable of providing air-defence, but of all-weather deep-penetration strike platforms equipped with new-generation mission avionics, i.e. more Rafales are reqd to convince the enemy about the IAF’s punitive deterrence capability & capacity.

Sir, very interesting observation by you on illegal aliens from Myanmar. I think this is often overlooked by the media and masses. But how does GOI intends to deport them that too forcibly? Will it alsi include thousands who have illegally entered India from Myanmar? They share ethnic and religious bond with tribals, especially Mizos who are quite radical. This illegal immigration from Myanmar has also resulted in increase of Christians in NE states, especially Arunachal. Hope GOI has a plan to deport them. The Modi govt is yet to deport the lakhs of Rohingyas who have already spread across the country from Kashmir to Tamil Nadu.
To SANJAY: Sound common-sense dictates that IF India wants transit-rights for transporting military hardware or personnel to the northeast, then it is only Bangladesh that can provide such rights, and not Myanmar since Yangon/Maypidaw will be vulnerable to its northern & northeastern borders being overrun by China in retaliation. Consequently, the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transport Transit Corridor is meant for use only for simplifying transportation logistics DURING PEACETIME ONLY. Nor is China vulnerable in any manner along the Chicken’s Neck area in Siliguri because the PLA will have to traverse more than 90km along the narrow Chumbi Valley if it wants to attack either Bhutan or India & India in that area dominates the entire stretch of the Valley on both sides—from Sikkim & Bhutan. Instead, the following are the realities:
Myth 1: Sino-Indian border is largely settled with just a few recorded and identified flashpoints. The harsh reality is that the PLA activates different areas, in keeping with their grand design, often as diversionary tactics. In this case, Naku La was a distraction for Galwan. We draw comfort from nuancing incursions as transgressions, but the unmistakable bottom line is — nothing is settled, till it is delimited, delineated and demarcated on the ground. We have to be prepared for the long haul with more surprises, as China is in no hurry to resolve issues.
Myth 2: Stand-offs are due to overreaction by local commanders. This is another false notion, a convenient excuse to pass the buck. Most stand-offs are recorded by PLA patrols with considerable play acting, giving an impression, that they are vectored by higher HQs. It will be prudent to surmise that the Chinese are masters in centrally planned but locally orchestrated events. In any case, Chinese Western Command controls the entire Tibet border against four different commands of India, micro-managed by the Army HQ, adding to confusion. Indian patrols have displayed remarkable restraint and maturity in face-offs. It throws up a disturbing possibility that ‘strategic guidance’ (agreed to at the summit level) is being flouted by the PLA, with tacit blessings.
Myth 3: The Chinese are superior to us. This myth needs to be junked. Objective comparison proves that our troops are more than a match for their counter parts. The 1962 syndrome was discarded in a resolute stand-off at Nathu La and Cho La, in 1967. Unfortunately, we have downplayed, this heroic action, as skirmish to avoid embarrassing the PLA. In fact, most Chinese troops are conscript variety with questionable domain competence. In Somdrong Chu and other stand-offs over the years, as also UN operations, Chinese vulnerability has been exposed, repeatedly.
Myth 4: Chinese technological asymmetry will cripple adversaries even before the battle is joined. The much hyped technology is yet to be operationalised and is severely degraded by high altitude and weather. On balance, it is part of psychological warfare and can’t be taken as game changer.

Myth 5: By and large, peace prevails as no bullet has been fired since 1967. This needs to be moderated with realisation that China is already waging unrestricted warfare. There is considerable evidence of Chinese engineered cyber disruption in our power grid. Pare-chu floods causing severe damage to power plants astride Sutlej and the more recent devastating deluge in Assam, coupled with denial of hydrological data are gross misuse of upper riparian leverages. Even in the current stand-off, water flow has been blocked in Galwan river. Pacifism is rooted in Deng’s maxim of economic consolidation, preceding precipitate military action, which has been discarded by Xi’s aggressively rising China.
Myth 6: In all situations, China will act responsibly, in accordance with stature. Will any responsible power misuse the pandemic for power play? Conventional wisdom, propagated by experts, is that Pakistan will invariably exploit Sino-Indian hostilities and intervene. China, showing maturity as a global power, will desist from exploiting Indo-Pak hostilities. Chinese reticence in 1971 and Kargil are cited as examples. However, the degree of collusive linkages have strengthened manifold with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Myth 7: China will show reciprocity and respect our sensitivities. Not quite, because 17 Corps, which was initially designated as Mountain Strike Corps and later played down with the dropping of ‘strike’ and curtailing of budgetary allocation, has not resulted in any reduction in Chinese intransigence. The coping strategy in dealing with China has to factor in existing asymmetry and should be confined within the bounds of realism. We have viable options, though limited, yet we must signal resolve. It may take considerable time, like Doklam, but our sensitivities in terms of security to the new Darbuk-DBO road and unfettered patrolling up to our claim lines, including Pangong Tso area should be ensured. In this age of 5G, nail-studded clubs, stoning and wrestling bouts on the LAC need to be eliminated. While diplomats and commanders are resolving the situation, the electronic media should enable an honourable resolution by avoiding rabble-rousing debates. Remaining focused on time-bound infrastructure development, it will be pragmatic to reduce hype attached to construction and inauguration of infrastructure in sensitive areas. Concurrent requirement is to fast-track China-centric, joint theatre commands. The Mountain Corps needs to be customised as an agile force and most importantly funded to generate multiple quid pro quo options. To deter the Dragon, we must discard myths, accept new realities and reduce asymmetries.

To AMIT MUKHERJEE: Neither tejas Mk.1 nor Tejas Mk.1A will have internally-mounted MAWS sensors. Instead, work is on to develop a pylon-based attachments containing MAWS sensors. The bulbous attachments atop the tail-section are the Dhruti RWR sensors.

The SSN design will be a variant of the S-2/Arihant SSGN design (as I have been stating since late 2013), but minus the VLS cells. Everything else will remain the same. No one in the world uses breeder reactors for marine propulsion since it will not be a compact solution when compared to the mature PWR designs.
