Hermes 900 MALE-UAVs, aka Drishti-10, Arriving Early Next Year for IA & IN

It was on March 2, 2021 that Israel’s ELBIT Systems had announced that it had received a US$300 million contract from an undisclosed Asian customer to supply and deliver Hermes 900 Starliner MALE-UAS. The contract also requires ELBIT Systems to provide MRO services for those MALE-UAVs. That customer has turned out to be India, with six each of the UAVs and one each of the ground-based control stations going to the Indian Army and Indian Navy.

All 12 Hermes 900s will be licence-assembled by Adani Defence & Aerospace, through its Adani-Elbit UAV Complex subsidiary, located at the Adani Aerospace Park in Hyderabad. Adani Defence & Aerospace had first exhibited the Hermes 900 during the Aero India 2017 expo in Bengaluru. Thereafter, the $15 million Adani-Elbit UAV Complex was inaugurated in December 2018, where most of the composites-based aerostructures for the Hermes 900 are fabricated.

The Hermes 900 has a payload capacity of 300kg, service ceiling of 9,100 metres (30,000 feet), a cruise speed of 112kph (60 Knots), and an endurance of 36 hours at cruise speed. The payload includes either a synthetic aperture radar for ground target-mapping, or a maritime surveillance radar as well as the standard optronic sensor, plus an electronic surveillance system and the automatic identification system (AIS) for maritime surveillance. Eyeing India’s long coastline, ELBIT notes that maritime patrol aircraft could not possibly cover the country’s 200-mile offshore economic exclusion zone (EEZ) without the benefit of cross-cueing from a wide-area surveillance system such as the Hermes 900.

Elbit claims that the Hermes 900 could fly as far as 1,000nm offshore thanks to SATCOM communications, and make frequent descents from higher altitude so that the optronic sensor could identify vessels. The command-and-control system is housed in a single shelter that can allow it to be carried by warships. ELBIT has teamed with another Israeli company, MARINT, to offer advanced maritime analytical software that can exploit data from multiple sources. Vessel behaviour is analysed to detect anomalous and suspicious behaviour that differs from routine maritime patterns.

It is believed that the IN’s and IA’s Hermes 900s will be equipped with the Leonardo Group’s Gabbiano X-band TS-80 PLUS multi-mode radars, weighing 44kg, which offers a set of surveillance capabilities such as high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) for patrol and surveillance operations. The radar integrates improved solid-state technology that offers similar performance of the earlier Gabbiano T200 radar and reduces its weight by 25kg, while escalating its mean-time-between-failure (MTBF) rate to 2,500 hours. The radar integrates the 360° antenna group with wide-elevation scan (+20°/-55°); a one metre-wide flat antenna plate as well as 80W of power that enables it to offer effective long-range surveillance. Furthermore, the Gabbiano TS-80 PLUS comes with the Gabbiano family mode suite, including air-to-sea surveillance with track-while-scan (TWS); high-resolution ground mapping (Spot/Strip-SAR); ship target imaging and classification with ISAR mode, and navigation with ground mapping and weather avoidance.

All three armed services of India have a combined MALE-UAV requirement for 155 MALE-UAVs.

It may be recalled that Adani Enterprises Ltd had in December 2018 announced the acquisition of Alpha Design Technologies Pvt Ltd for Rs.400 crore in an all-cash deal. Alpha Design in turn has had a joint venture (JV) involving ELBIT Security Systems (ELSEC). And it was this JV that in September 2021 received a contract for supplying the IA with 100 SkyStriker loitering attack drones worth around Rs.100 crore.

The SkyStriker, which is launched through an automatic pneumatic launch platform, can reach a distance of 20km in less than 10 minutes. The total range of this attack drone is around 100km. According to ELBIT, it can loiter and pursue a target for up to 2 hours with a 5kg warhead or up to 1 hour with a 10kg warhead. At maximum speed (100 Knots), the SkyStriker can reach a distance of 20km within 6.5 minutes, reducing the loitering time by 15 minutes.

When preparing to strike, it navigates based on its optronic “lock” on the target. During the strike phase, SkyStriker can dive at extremely high speeds of up to 300 Knots and can withstand winds of up to 20 Knots.

Adani Defence & Arospace is also in the process of bagging two more orders: one for additional HAROP attack drones (to add to the 12 that were procured early in the previous decade) to be procured by the Indian Air Force (IAF), and another for upgrading the IAF’s existing stockpile of 40 HARPY anti-radar attack drones.

To MANISH 2: Has any customer to date bought only 2 UAV platforms? Apart from glossing over vital contract details, the ‘desi patrakaars’ have mixed up the platform numbers ordered with 2 TYPES of MALE-UAVs being imported, i.e. Heron-2 & Hermes 900. I have given contract value & time of contract signature, which the ‘desi patrakaars’ are unaware of & these very morons have been claiming since 2016 that India had ordered Heron-TPs!

To BHARTIYA: 1) I had already written about the Heron-2s & MQ-9B Predator-B/Sea Guardians. The MQ-9Bs are classified by India’s armed forces as HALE-UAVs. 2) No. 4) How exactly camn Scorpene SSKs be upgraded to Brracuda standard when the two respective SSK designs are totally different in terms of displacement? 5) Only C-295 from Airbus Military.

To SUMIT SEN: The Hermes 900s for the IN & IA will be unarmed. They will be used only for ISAR taskings.

To KANE1966: LoLz! No CKD or SKD kits have come from Naval Group. Such kits came only from THALES. If Naval Group has terminated the Scorpene SSK production line, then how come Naval Group is offering the Scorpene SSKs to both Indonesia & The Philippines? Naval Group has 2 new types of AIP solutions, which can be viewed at the company’s website.Due to all such factoids, all that is being peddled by senile internet fanboys is pure fantasy, surmises & suppositions & hence is a total waste of time to comment upon.

To 3rd-EYE: Of course such survey vessels are being used for seabed mapping & undersea depth measurements. But creating artificial islands in Bay of Bengal is an impossibility for China, since unlike in the South China Sea, China has made no territorial claims within the Bay of Bengal nor will China be able to marshall the resources reqd for an island reclamation venture so far away from China’s coastline.

To VIN: Both Arjun Mk.1 & Mk.1A will fare much better than their Russian/China counterparts because when developing the Arjun & its armaments, CVRDE relied totally on NATO specifications that are now proving to be superior in the battlefields inside Ukraine. Th Arjuns do need APS installations & there’s plenty og room available for further upgrades & growth. Also, the Arjuns have silhouettes totally different from Russia-/China-origin MBTs, which helps eliminate blue-on-blue force engagements. The same cannot be said for the T-72CIAs & T-90S MBTs in service with the IA.

1. I can sense disdain & satire. Yeah more is better but I didn't anticipate a grocery basket. If 4 Heron Mk.II was acquired & ownership transferred to AAC, then what more & distinct will come from acquisition of 12 Hermes 900? To SOUMYA RAY: 1) There are several types of UAVs being sought by the 3 armed services. Indigenously-developed mini- & micro-UAVs will be acquired, along with imported MALE & HALE UAVs. The same goes for attack drones, all of which have been & are being imported. The so-called attack-drones supplied by NewSpace are of useless value & won’t survive on the battlefield. 2) Only the IA & IN answer that. It makes no sense to me, with the only probable reason being that the Hermes 900 is a MALE-UAV while the MQ-9B is a HALE-UAV. 3) DRDO can’t do anything for as long as it is unable to offer a fully functional Tapas-BH MALE-UAV. 4) Its replacement is due to be launched in the near future. 5) Not Boeing, but the US Army/US Navy & General Atomics.

1. I've noticed a trend in MALE class drones that most have either H-, Y-, inverted Y-shaped and blended vertical tails. Tapas-BH has T-shaped. Is that what contributes to its failure? Is Tapas-BH under-powered, under-served & under-utilised given its dimension, weight & objective?
2. Israel & Turkey source their powerplant solution for UAV/RPA from Austria and (Ukraine). Why haven't we done that yet, at least tentatively, so that our UAV program reach a conclusion?
3. As evident from above pics, Adani is on feverish pace to rename Israeli drones. The 6th pic from top - is that what Adani contributes indigenously?
4. Aatmanirbharta/localisation/indigenisation in defence & +ve lists are all sham now, with armed forces steadily acquiring foreign drones as CKD/SKD under emergency procurements by re-routing it through D(Pvt)SUs. Renaming them makes all foreign content go under the carpet!!!. This was also done in UPA era through D(Pub)SUs!!
5. What more & distinct will come from acquisition of 6 Hermes' 900 by IA that 4 Heron MK.2s don' ----- I'm stuck here!!!
6. An unmanned US military MQ-9 was shot down off the coast of Yemen by Houthi forces for the third time. How are Houthis "tracking, acquiring & engaging targets" - EO or Radar from Iran? Can MANPADS target MALE RPAs at cruising altitude?

7. IA is well poised to acquire 100 more K9 tracked SPHs and ~300 wheeled MGS (appeared in print media). I understand their mechanical-physical structure & capabilities. But, how does one benefit over other, since both are mobile & relatively armoured? Where does one deploy one of these to compensate for the lack of other? How do these two vary in operational deployment, say in a division or brigade? Are they deployed side-by-side, like a composite regiment?
8. Which MoD department/branch has been anointed as nodal agency to handle military exports, say to Armenia, Philippines, KSA, etc.
9. Do tactical battlefield S2S-BMs, in general, decelerate to lower Mach values in the terminal stage to do optical/RF homing?

Firstly, for 'normalisation with Israel, KSA wants 3 things from USA: 1) civil nuke cooperation; 2) iron-clad NATO-like security guarantee; 3) more advanced U.S. weapons. 1) is understandable but 2) & 3) are incompatible. It's like have cake & eat it too!!! Its armoury is much modern & large and second only to Israel in MENA region. Secondly, by working hand in glove with China, KSA entered into a diplomatic détente with Iran. Yet KSA wants security umbrella from USA and not China! If there is a peace deal with Iran, then what for does it want a security umbrella?
18. How come Saudi-led GCC can fight in Yemen, Libya & Sahel, diplomatically seal-off Qatar, acquire most modern arms, provide alms to Pak and yet wants external security guarantee to preserve its sovereignty & territorial integrity? How is it acceptable to a wealthy self-respecting state?

after all we have everything with us ...the desi sam the awacs. Now with the more powerful aesa radar on the awacs it will have enough ERP to data link and update the sam .
will it be feasible to make uhf freq radar on a awacs for stealth monitoring ?

again how did the merkava take a hit from an anti tak missile when it is equipped with APS trophy?

In continuation to my above post , can the awacs datalink the enemy fighter data to the radar C3I station which can direct the sam missile to the enemy fighter via the ground based radar which will be in contact with the sam missile targeting the enemy fighter, though the same ground based radar may not be able to see the enemy fighter as they are usually below the radar horizon of radar.

To SOUMYA RAY: 1) To sum it up, the DRDO’s ADE laboratory has been a consistent under-performer, given the unavailability of systems like Tapas-BH, Rustom-1 & the Nirbhay-derived LR-LACM. 2) Why go abroad when the Honeywell TPE331 turboprop engine for the Dornier Do-228 can be used for UAVs as well? 4) This has been going on for decades. 5) They will steadily replace the older Searcher Mk.2s that have difficulty in operating during inclement weather. Tht5’s why one Searcher Mk.2 was lost 3 years ago when it crashed in Tibt near Sikkim. 6) Yes, when available, MANPADS can shoot down UAVs. Houtis have radars acquired from Iran as well as Russia when Yemen was still a united country. 7) Procuring K-9/Vajra tracked SPHs was a wrong decision. Worldwide, all the world’s major armies have opted for wheeled SPH solutions. Even Myanmar & Bangladesh, apart from Pakistan, have them. 8) The office of Secretary for Defence Production. 9) No. 10) They are technological-driven reqmts, but dual sensors are fast becoming the norm. 110 It is kept in semi-recessed mode, i.e. not fully assembled. It comes under the SFC. 14) BrahMos-1ER has 650km range. 15) Almost 80%. 16) Due to differing parameters related to platform stabilisation, i.e. Th Prachand requires a tail-mounted wheel. 19) Yes the IN has procured RAMPAGE. Wonder why the DRDO-developed Prahar SS-BSM could not be developed as an ASM. 20) No extra Su-30MKIs are read. New Su-30MKI Sqns can be raised from existing Su-30MKI inventory. 21) They are sold as scrap & at times destroyed as well. Only items like GSH-23 cannon are remove & recycled.

To RAD: It is all about achieving secure long-distance data-linking to overcome limitations imposed by the Earth’s curvature. The best solution therefore is to have stratospheric platforms for providing data-linking between the LRAAM & AEW & CS platforms.

To ABHISHEK GUHA THAKURTA: Bangladesh won’t see any externally-induced regime change due to the steadily deteriorating situation inside Myanmar, thanks to the recently conducted OP 1027.

To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) What for? Like all engine manufacturers, GE too is grappling with post-COVID-19 supply chain desruptions. 3) Primarily for liaising with NATO HQ. 4) Not in the immediate future. 6) It will materialise, after Russia has acquired enough stockpiles of the 3M22 ZIRCON. 8) ADE has grossly under-performed on the LRLACM R & D front.

To KAPIL: Only ignorant ‘desi patrakaars’ & internet fanboys will question the need for StrykerQB 8 x 8 vehicles when the ‘desi’ WhAP/Kestrel is available. The reality is totally different, since the issue is related to the raising of mission-specific IBGs & their command-n-control reqmts. The IA is belatedly beginning to grapple with doctrinal questions associated with modernised capability. The IA, wants new technologies to enable its Integrated Battle Groups (IBG) to manoeuvre faster, move data quicker and travel with less equipment, all of which will alter aspects of how units conduct operations from a doctrinal perspective. The recommendations made by IA HQ—reducing footprints, rethinking bandwidth needs and inter-operability between the IA & IAF, and enabling tailored acquisitions—do not represent a significant departure from the original mandate to improve IA HQ’s mobility and survivability in large-scale combat operations. However, the inability to solve the structural problems arising from the retrofit and replacement of legacy systems is a risk to both the mission and the IBG. Pairing on-the-move mission command with at-the-halt capabilities hampers commanders’ ability to maintain tempo. Mobility enhancement and dispersion enable commanders to reduce the threat to command posts and keep vulnerable elements out of the range rings of the enemy. Unfortunately, the reforms & re-balancing efforts that should have taken off in 2005, began to take off only after 2017. Consequently, the IA today still relies on ‘fire-n-manoeuvre’ principles, instead of ‘manoeuvre fires’ & this explains why the IA has been extremely late in procuring wheeled SPHs & has mentally enslaved itself to procuring towed 155mm/52-cal howitzers.

Within any IBG, the principal assets reqd for dramatically reducing the sensor-to-shooter loop are the recce/scout vehicles & the command vehicles, which require internal wiring & electrical power reqd for accommodating a diverse array of sensors & vectronics. The WhAP/Kestrel wasn’t designed for this, while the StrykerQB is. Its capabilities include silent movement, silent watch and exportable electric power via a hybrid diesel-electric power pack to enhance vehicle survivability and mobility. Here it is:

Establishing and maintaining sustained communications in remote operational environments is a struggle for even the best-trained organisations. While some units master the tenets of “shoot” and “move,” the last building block, “communicate,” often remains elusive. Many units fail due to overly complicated architectures, lack of support, lack of priority, and user error. Tactical bandwidth requirements continue to outpace system capabilities, with different warfighting functions demanding alternate networks to meet classification needs. The “soda straw” analogy is a popular visualisation of this issue, describing how voluminous data can only flow at the rate of available “piping” or bandwidth. The typical IBG will pipe several levels of data networks, tactical radio, and satellite-based tracking systems simultaneously, saturating the signals environment. The lapses when moving forward HQs leaves ample room for shutdown and startup errors. The IA should seek to condense as many of these tactical data streams and functions as possible. One reliable network that is accessible across the operational environment is a reasonable aim, even if it makes networks slightly more vulnerable to cyber and electronic attack. Some may argue the IA has already taken this step with its existing actical networks, but there are numerous systems that do not fall under this umbrella. This goes back to the IA’s culture of security, which is rigid by regulation but often loose in practice to reduce friction. In essence, this creates operational barriers at lower echelons.

Lastly, what US SECDEF Lloyed Austin was referring to was achieving inter-operability in the arena of real-time intelligence-sharing by US technological assets with the IA IBGs during wartime, now that India has inked all the reqd foundational agreements. Using the StrykerQB for scout/recce & mobile command-n-control functions therefore makes perfect sense. At most, the IA’s reqmt is for 400 such vehicles for the northern front. However, customisation of such vehicles for operating at high altitudes remains a challenge, but I’m sure GDLS will be able to overcome them.

1. Empirically speaking, Tracked-SPH (TSPH) is in service of most of all major armed forces - USA, Australia, UK, ROK, Poland, Germany, Finland,....,Pakistan, PRC, so is India. There have been quite a many new entrants to this list. Even IA swears by its performance. My original query of MGS vs. SPH was focused on nature of their (both MGS & TSPH) footprint, deployment, battlefield mobility, firepower, etc. by IA. Can you enlighten me on that? Where does one deploy one of these to compensate for the lack of other? Are they deployed side-by-side, like a composite regiment?
2.Honeywell TPE331 turboprop.....for the Dornier Do-228 can be used for UAVs as well... Really WTF!!? Then why are ADE being a Dhrit-rastra as well as 'Dhurta-rastra' by using 150 hp engine? What's the rationale here for them? Why isn't IAF/HQ-IDS advising them?

While Russia is dropping around 50 UMPK guided bombs on ukrainian targets a day which works out to around 1500 a month.

I've been following the Imphal Airport UFO/UAP story and it struck me (as well as other watchers on Twitter) as interesting that the IAF decided to scramble the Rafales all the way from Hasimara AFS which is over 500+ kms away from Imphal instead of Su-30MKIs based out of the much closer Tezpur AFS (only about 230 kms away).

And then I'm reminded of former US Navy Cdr. David Fravour's (F/A-18 pilot of the tic-tac UFO fame) statement that it was only after they had upgraded their F/A-18s with AESA-FCRs that they started registering all these previously unseen UAP contacts.

Could the fact that Rafales have AESA-FCRs unlike the Su-30MKIs be the reason why IAF thought best to deploy them instead of the PESA-equipped Sukhois?

Would love to hear your opinion & analysis on the Imphal incident.

JF-17’s RD-93 turbofan has no use for Russia as this engine is not in service with any Russian airborne platform & is only meant for export. JF-17 Thunder with AESA-MMR & 145km-range PL-15E can be taken care of by 160km-range Meteor for now. The protrusions on Astra BVRAAM are the sensors for laser-based proximity-fuze. What is you take on recent intrusion in Parliament and then behaviour of govt. No statement by HM or PM and saying they were busy on oath ceremonies. And then suspension of opposition MP on the same issue but no action against the BJ party MP who issued the pass.
