Pakistan Army's SH-15 MGS Package

The Pakistan Navy had last August inducted into service the NORINCO-supplied Sharp Eye tactical UAS for use along the contested Sir Creek area bordering India’s state of Gujarat and Pakistan’s Sindh province.

Prasun Da,
Thanks to know that SH-15 will not be used for delivering any nuclear WMD round/projectile.But with this MGS surely they have advantage. Why our army nor interested in this type of MGS like Caesar,Nora B-52,Atmos2000 etc.As usual,OFB's MGS may not be ready in time.Still we not have 120mm breach loaded mortar,FSV,MGS.So as you have stated earlier, lack of adequate fire-power is evident.

Prasunda,

VMT.

1) Even if metal cutting for the S-5 begins now, wo'nt the S-5 still be available only after 2035 as you wrote last time ? In that case, wo'nt the S-4 still be needed to test the K-4 and its successor until the S-5 is in place ?

2) Will the SH-15 with Pak together with its orecision guided shells tilt the artillery balance in their favour? Or will we still retain a large edge that allows us to dominate with punitive fire assaults ?

How soon could IA induct dhanush based MGS...as this SH15 capability will reduce the assymetrical sttaus enjoyed by indian artillery against Pakistan in kashmir....IA badly needs MGS now for easy movement across the ridges

Prasun sir, it seems pinaka and qrsam tests hv been expedited..does this mean early commencing of both in service??
2- reports saying pinaka mk2 hvng range of 90 km..true??
3- since u hv said metal cutting of s5 ssbn hv begun..does this mean that project too hv been expedited?? Since arihant class are now going to be used as ssgn and test bed for slbm to be carried by s5 ssbn class.then when are we going to see commisioning of s5 ssbn??
4- are arihant class ssgn quieter than china's ssn?? Are they capable of penetrating south china sea and unleashing salvo of cruise missiles against mainland china in case of hostilities??
5-will indian navy go for more ssn after the delivery of 6 ssn??
6- as per your views how many submarines are required for optimum operations in entire indian ocean?
7-when are we going to see the first trial of xrsam??
8- does indian army or air force hv any plans to acquire or develop krashuka 4 type ew platforms??

Prasun Da,

The QR-SAM was successfully tested today. The missile is fully ready for Operational Service, and will be inducted by 2021.

Will you please state how good this system is compared to similar systems fielded by other countries ?

In this Mr Tony aka dhanoa says " on 27th Feb apart from stupid mistakes , for which remedial measures have been taken, we could not impose significant cost for PAF misadventure "

What remedial measures have been taken to prevent blue on blue SAM fratricides?

Also he acknowledge s IAF didn't performed optimally on 27th Feb for which he also blamed IAS babus who failed to provide advance tech to win in LIMITED AREA LIMITED PERIOD WAR.

ALSO he did mentioned that obsolete MiG 21s doesn't have NCTR capability , which is present in Su 30MKI otherwise. I Want to ask how this feature could have helped abhinandan to tackle PAF F16 without SPJ.

Lastly chief says IAF possess capabilty to decrypt encrypted ODL of PAF..how is this possible and what tech is used for that... Is it so easy?? Can we assume even PAF has capability to decrypt IAFs encrypted ODL thereby jeopardising the secretive nature of classified info as Said by Air Commodre Kaiser Tufail ??

To SUVO: The 236 SH-15s with 13 Medium Artillery Regiments of the PA will not be used from within PoK, but will be used in the Sialkot-Chhammb sector, i.e. in the plains because within PoK the road infrastructure is highly vulnerable to IA fire-assaults launched from higher & therefore dominating ground within J & K. For targetting IA positions within J & K the PAF is being given the lead by the PA & hence the PAF’s CAS was in Beijing on December 17 to request for expedited deliveries of the ‘Takbir’ REK GPS-guided gliding PGM. But significantly, the only MR-SAMs available to Pakistan—LY-80E LOMADS—are not owned & operated by the PAF, but by the PA, meaning the the PAF’s integrated air-defence system has significant gaps at the operational-level.

Meanwhile, here’s proof that significant damage was caused by the IA’s fire-assaults of December 20-21, which caused the PA’s COAS to visit the LoC & Muzaffarabad CMH:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYA2dDrT9FU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfpki40TqJ8

To SATYAKI: 1) The S-5 will be launched in the first half of the next decade & will be ready for sea-trials within 6 years. By that time the projected SLBMs will be ready for deployment. 2) Not quite, since the 75km-range Pinaka-2 MBRLs will be able to destroy the SH-15s while at the same time the Spice-1000 PGMs too will be able to destroy the PA’s field artillery batteries with impunity.

To AYUSH & AMIT BISWAS: The competitive field evaluations of various contenders has yet to begin. But the OFB-developed Dhanush-52 is ready & available:

To SUJIT: 1) Not so fast. Only the technical development processes have been completed & user-evalauations remain to be conducted by the respective end-users. 2) No. Only 75km range has been attained at sea-level. No data is available for performance parameters when operating at higher altitudes. 3) S-5 will be commissioned by 2030. 4) The IN’s nuclear-powered submarines have much better performance parameters. But cruise missiles of the type launched from HWT tubes are not yet available since the SLCM version of the Nirbhay is still under development, as is the BrahMos-NG. 5 & 6) The IN requires at least 12 SSNs. 7) Perhaps in 2020. 8) What for? Isn’t the Samyukta system already available?

To VIKRAM GUHA: Here is the original press statement:

https://pib.gov.in/PressReleseDetail.aspx?PRID=1597212

As I had stated several times before by giving the Akash-1’s example, the developmental process is never complete or comprehensive unless & until the weapon system demonstrates its effectiveness in different types of terrain & weather conditions. Hence, just because the Pinaka-2 or QR-SAM demonstrates flawless performance at sea-level along India’s coastline, it does not mean that such performance-levels will be consistent when the weapons are operated in desert terrain or at forbidding altitudes in Ladakh, J & K, Sikkim or Arunachal Pradesh. I can therefore only hope that the DRDO & end-users have drawn the correct lessons from the Akash-1 E-SHORADS’ developmental processes & deficiencies so that they are not repeated yet again with the Pinaka-2 & QR-SAM.

To AMIT BISWAS: The only remedial measure is to improve human resource training through the usage of simulation technologies. He blamed the decision-makers, who are not IAS Babus, but the ‘netas’. No, NCTR capability helps provide only enhanced situational awareness, & not any active means for threat neutralisation. For the latter, possession of ASPJ is a must. That was revealed in my thread dated March 1, 2019 & this is the capability:

https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HZtQjNck_ig/XH3GtpBgtpI/AAAAAAAAQ5w/ZqtTg2Uz5wURBR_zJMciG2NCHc_RcbuXgCLcBGAs/s1600/Divya%2BDhrishti%2BCOMINT%2BSystem.jpg

Prasun,

1- On AMCA -why is the ADA insisting on a unique 110KN engine when GE 414 epe would provide more thrust (@116kn)& is already prototyped. Also, as years roll on,hardware would only increase the thrust reqt. IAF chief talks about directed laser systems to be added in batch 2? There is also mention of AMCA carrying @6.5t of fuel, why so much? unless we plan to fight someone in EU.The weapons load is touted to be 6.5t which seems lees for a twin engine medium class futuristic fighter. Can you share a more accurate spec for AMCA. Ideal thrust cud be @125Kn/engine. The talk about first using GE engines & the switching to some other is befuddling. Wouldn't it involve possible redesign of the rear section & a lot of re-cert activities .add the logistics woes of having 2 engines types for the same aircraft.
2- Your view on the following -http://idrw.org/will-americans-offer-a-new-engine-and-new-company-to-power-india's-amca-program/
3- the Chinese are at it again!! like every indo-china border meet.. 2nd attempt @calling UN security meet then selling MGS to pakis.. Why dosen't India adopt similar stance.. is the babudom- neta combine become so inert that nothing wakes them up?
4- Your view on the whole CAA-NRC protests.Seems to be a wonderful case of mass psychology where rational & informed view is thrown out of the window before jumping into the fray(many know personalities from diff walks of life). the ruling party must take a lion's share of the blame for failing project it as impartial laws. The failure to do so was probably their cheap stunt to pander to the extremists on their side which ended up providing fodder to extremists on the other side
5- IAf chief talks about Mk1a order +114 order. add the fact that more rafales are also need + the super sukhoi & Mk2 MWF programs. Where is da MONEY????
6- Private defence manufacturers asking MoD to award contracts on merit of technology and not just the lowest cost. Will MoD listen?
7- how true is this ----https://www.defencenews.in/article/India-May-Sign-Deal-For-20-percent-Cheaper-LCA-Jets-At-DefExpo-2020-808551
8- Wotz new this time around ---http://www.indiandefensenews.in/2019/12/india-iran-to-
accelerate-chabahar-port.html
9-russia-up-in-arms-over-chinese-tech theft-- case of crying over spilt milk?? its amazing how chinese made everyone turn a blind eye to its blatant copying- both russians & the west, be it defence related or commercial.how did they manage it .. just by the lure of the mkt size seems to be a bit far fetched or is the world full of stupid ppl? why can't India lure them given it mkt size.
10- Why should mahathir be pissed about India's good relations with his neighbours?

Prasun da, what are the chances of a military conflict with Pakistan before 2024 general election? The Modi govt has delivered on issues that everyone though were impossible like 370 and Ayodhya. But the economy is in a slowdown. Nobody knows how long it will take to turn around. Hopefully it will bounce back in a year or 2 but if the current economic downturn continues than only the military can win Modi a third term. We will also have Rafales and S-400s soon. I'm a BJP supporter and I don't think Modi will order military action just for electoral gains. Are the armed forces prepared for such a situation?

Is there any slight incremental changes between S-2,S-3,S-4 submarines or are they all identical in respect to elctronics, hardware, accustic signature, etc.

Prasunji,

1) What helicopter does the Kolkata class destroyer use for OTHT of its brahmos missiles, if it is not part of a carrier group and is on its own? Seaking or Ka 28 or chetak?

2) Can the Kolkata class use either the seaking, chetak or the kamov 28 or is it restricted to just one type of helicopter ? If so, which one?

3) Is the kolkata class already fitted with the Mareech ATDS or is it yet to be added? Is the expendable decoy Launcher carried internally or externally on heli hanger roof near the kavach?

4) Have the atlas electronic ATAS been fitted on any of our warships yet? I believe it's been years since they were first ordered.

5) How does the Mareech compare with the UK SSTD?

6) Do the RBU 6000 aboard Indian warships have any guided projectiles like the ones developed for the RPK8, or are they armed with just depth charges?

7) Does India have any plans to procure anti torpedo torpedoes like the paket or seaspider or are such technologies still not mature enough?

8) What upgrades will be onboard the delhi class after their current MLU?
Brahmos? Barak 8 or VL shtil?

9) Considering a deal has been signed to upgrade the oldest 4 kilo and 2 type 209 subs in our navy, how many of the total 8 remaining kilos and 4 type 209s will be retired in the next ten years? Is it possible for us to keep all 12 of them operational till 2030 considering project 75i is still a long way off?

10) Between the Type 209/1500 shishumar and 877EKM Sindhughosh which according to you is a more advanced and capable design?

11) According to official sources, the Mareech system needs data from ship sonars to function. Since none of the ships in the Indian navy currently have an ATAS, how does the Mareech towed decoy function? Does the Mareech system have its own towed sonar? Or does it rely only on Hull sonar?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih8uxdSqADI

Critical Lessons Learnt From LCA Project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IetllK9z65s

To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) Both the single-enginedx MWF & twin-engined AMCA will use the F114 family of turbofans with varying max thrust-levels. All specs are still provisional & have not yet been firmed up. All this talk about AMCA in the month of December is being propped up only due to 1 reason, i.e. the requests for budgetary allocations for the following fiscal year. So do kindly rest assured that nothing of the type is happening as far as serious R & D activities for AMCA go. 2) As I have numerous times before, such FAKE NEWS will always emanate from those who ASSUME that ToT involves manufacturing technology. From 1947 till to date, not a single engine OEM has transferred the critical technologies, nor will anyone in future. Such rumour-mongering can only emanate from those who are the byproducts of the dysfunctional education system bestowed upon India by Lord Macaulay. 3) It is because no one within the MEA has so far mastered the art of engaging in ‘combative diplomacy’. 4) LoLz! It was 7,000 years ago that Sri Krishna led a mass exodus from Mathura (after being attacked & ravaged 18 times by his uncle Jarasandha) to set up a greenfield kingdom called DWARKA. There, Sr Krishna had decreed that each citizen of his kingdom will carry a specially crafted seal made from sea-shells as his/her unique identification certifying him/her to be a bonafide citizen of Dwarka. This is the earliest example what what we today refer to as UID, which is what documents like Voter’s ID card & Aadhaar UID card were supposed to be. Inm other words, both these documents were to be provided to Indian citizens only starting from the early 1990s. But, as expected, populism overrode all other pragmatic options & landed India in the gigantic mess that she is in today. Today we are still groping in the dark & creating needless fuss about both CAA & NRC. No doubt there has been a communication problem with the present-day govt, which should have first spelt out the methodology of carrying out a nationwide NRC, followed by initiating this process on a pilot basis on a few states. This alone would have negated all doubts about the NRC process, which the great majority of folks are ASSUMING will be the same as the Assam NRC process. But thankfully, this chaos has exposed several of the country’s so-called intellectuals & self-styled conscience-keepers as nothing else but intellectually bankrupt & intellectually dishonest folks. 5) The money is there, it is just awaiting mobilisation by the GoI. 6) If no one listens, then inferior solutions will always be chosen. 7) The one word says it all: ‘MAY’. 10) ENVY.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To HARDIK THANKI: Which engine is that? Kaveri? HTFE-25? HTSE-1200? The list of such engines keeps on growing.

To ADITYA: 1) ATAGS is nothing but a souped-up FH-77B with additional vectronics & a re-engineered APU. 2) It will be a lot more expensive than the K-9 Vajra because no one has as yet developed a tracked ammo resupply vehicle to go with such a ‘desi’ tracked SPH. 3) It is ongoing. 4) It is a version of the AK-630M that I had recommended back in 2016.

To KAPIL: Military conflict is already on-going, but it is nowadays known as non-contact warfare. The economy will start turning around by next year.

To SHUBHAM: No changes at all. All 3 were ordered in one go with identical finalised specifications.

To BAPPA: It is the HUMSA-NG:

HUMSA-NG http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-T4GIy2mNNEo/UVtEjQYvpcI/AAAAAAAAEhw/8URzSyIE7W8/s1600/HUMSA-NG-1.jpg

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g2HcX4QpsA8/UVtExzNsOFI/AAAAAAAAEh4/buRZnuhG6HE/s1600/HUMSA-NG-2.jpg

To JAIKISHAN: 1) Ka-28PL or the Ka-31. 2) It can use any 12-tonne or 10-tonne NMRH. 3) Yes. Obviously its launcher has to be an external installation. 4) They were ordered only 2 years ago. The Project 1135.6 Batch-1 FFGs will be the first to receive them during their now-underway mid-life refits. 5) It is comparable in performance. 6) They are unguided. 7) Such plans always exist. 8) BrahMos-1 & Barak-8s will be fitted. 9) The Type 877EKM SSKs all have a 35-year lifespan. Their service lives cannot be extended anymore. The Class 209/Type 1500 SSKs have a longer lifespan. 10) The latter being single-hulled is a far better SSK option & operating platform. 11) It is all explained here:

It is understood that Lt.Gen.P.R. Shankar is biased for a system that he helped develop. But if the guided Pinaka is indeed so good, why does he suggest that the number of regiments are being reduced from 22 to 10. Ofcourse India needs more howitzers, but it also needs such Guided Rockets. Is it a cost factor or are Guns more effective? Ofcourse, poor quality & underperformance of end product as well as inability to produce in required numbers due to tech constraints. The COAS has ofcourse laid stress on Non-Contact Warfare as you also mentioned about doctrinal change.

https://twitter.com/TariqNaqash/status/1209872144303362054

To THE INDIAN: The S05 SSBN will have a single 190mWT PWR of the 4th-generation, just like in the Project 970 SSGN. The S-2, S-3 & S-4 cannot be armed with K-4 SLBMs because they have all been fitted with VLS cells for K-15 SLBMs. These cells, once installed, cannot be replaced until the submarine goes to the drydock for its mid-life refit. In any case, the need of the hour is SSN capability, which the S-2, S-3 & S-4 perform with ease. After all, possessing 750km-range SLBMs does not afford any credible strategic deterrence against countries like China.

Meanwhile, here are 3 presentations that detail all aspects of the IN’s undersea warfare capabilities & what the future reqmts are. Especially interesting is L & T’s presentation on its 3-D digital virtual reality design capabilities, in which some slides show the various hull modules of the S-2 SSBN:

Tejas MKIA is also pending.....
Will these be signed in this financial year.
And what about the maritime drone from US ..
All these seem quiet ...
Is Indian financial situation dire to a state that it does not have money for those as of now...
Matter of LCH seems forgotten one...

What is your assessment of CDS and military affairs department....
Do you see change in political power in west bengal in coming years.
Bjp loosing state after state ..How you see ..Decline of the rise of bjp has stared..

Prasun Da,
Thanks for reply.
I have some question.
1)How our artillery unit maximize their lethality in battlefield?
2)Why Russia & Ukraine modernize their heavy artillery systems like 2S7-Pion or 2S4 Tyulpan.
3)Is it possible to acquire this type of modernize heavy artillery system(from reserve of Russia or Ukraine) Or is it possible to integrate this gun or mortar system to Arjun tank's chassis?

Prasun,
I readthis in a facebook post!
"A gruesome conspiracy is brewing in our country right now .....
They want to break away the north east states and carve out a major portion of India into an Islamic corridor named MUGHALISTAN. The code name for this operation given by ISI is operation 'Pincode'.
A thin portion of land, often called the ‘Chicken Neck’ connects India with the rest of North East , once this land is overtaken they can successfully break the North-Eastern part of India away from its mainland and make it into GREATER BANGLADESH and no indian in North East will be able to escape to india .
‘Mughalistan Research Institute’ is an ISI brainchild and the ultimate aim of operation pin-code is ethnic partition of India.
This will be achieved by populating the belt from Bangladesh to Pakistan ie. assam-bengal-bihar-uttar pradesh with Bangladeshi Muslims
Bangladesh has pushed a staggering 25- 30% of its population into India for this purpose.Six thousand Bangladeshis infiltrate India every day . Over 5 crore Bangladeshi infiltrators have now taken over all means of earning of Indian people . Their sheer numbers makes them a deciding factor in NE politics. These bangladeshis help terrorists in attacks inside india , they provide maps and amunition to naxals.
In short these people pose different kinds of threats to India like:
1. They take away livelihood of Indians
2. They poach upon farm animals of Indian natives (Bangladeshis illegally transport 20,000 cows to Bangladesh for slaughter every day.
3. They pose a very big security threat as they abet crimes, bomb blasts and narcotics trade.)
4. They harbour sleeper cells of at least 5000 terrorists to be used at an opportune moment against India.
5. They cost our government in terms of an added population of 5 crore people demanding heavily on health services etc., law and order, habilitation etc.
5. They send back at least 15,000 crore rupees back to Bangladesh every year which is dent on regional economy
6. They commit crimes in India and go absconding back to Bangladesh
7. They vote en block so that their political interests are served at their will.
Before Hindus were pushed out of Kashmir a big network of Jihadi Madrasas were made throughout Kashmir to radicalize the generations.
Same is happening now all over India where these Bangladeshis are being aided by Pakistan and its secret agencies.Recent role of Madrassas in Bengal Blasts was a testimony to this fact."
Your kind opinion please!

Sir,
About a question from last thread about EW system.

Does JF-17 hold any kind of SPJ internally? If no, there is any plan by PAF to equip JF-17 with internal or external ASPJ like ELL 8222 WB.

To KAUSTAV: What he is suggesting is that a range of MBRL rockets with varying diameters be developed, all of which can be launched from a common launch vehicle, like this SR-5 system developed by NORINCO:

http://n.sinaimg.cn/front/577/w950h1227/20190113/-Sra-hrpcmqw4117515.jpg

If such a MBRL launcher can be developed by the DRDO, then this will be able to launch rockets of varying diameters, like 214mm, 300mm & even 800mm BSMs like the ATACMS. Such a versatile MBRL launcher will then be in great demand for delivering non-contact beyond-the-horizon rocket artillery fire-assaults. Right now, having different types of vehicles & logistics-support systems for 122mm, 214mm & 300mm MBRLs hugely complicates their operational usage in the battlefield.

To THE INDIAN: How can PWR-related design & construction be indigenised when the reqmts are in very small numbers? In addition, reactor physics & reactor engineering are subjects that do not encourage large-scale diversification. For instance, while Canada specialises in PHWRs (followed by India & South Korea), Canada has no expertise in PWRs, Similarly, those countries specialising in PWRs & fast-breeder reactors have no interest in developing PHWRs. Hence, in India’s case, where specialisation in PHWRs takes topmost priority & is followed by fast-breeder reactors, a 3rd area of developmental expertise concerning PWRs should never be expected as it is unaffordable. As the video presentation by the Vice Admiral revealed, the IN team in Vladivostok received its reactor physics/engineering lessons from a Russian technocrat who was involved with the development of PWRs for icebreakers, i.e. the 3rd-generation PWR that was only 43% indigenous by content, was originally developed as the KLT-40C PWR for icebreakers & was never designed from the outset for any submarine & this explains why the IN took 7 years to achieve full-scope criticality on bthe S-2/Arihant, despite the existence of the shore-based S-1 PWR testbed at Kalpakkam. Similarly, for the S-5, S-6 & S-7 SSBNs, a 4th-generation 190mWe PWR developed for icebreakers by Russia will have to be modified for use inside the SSBNs. The USSR had installed 2 PWRs into their large SSBNs because at that time high-density 4th-gen PWRs were not available. Such PWRs became available only in the mid-1990s & now Russia possesses even 5th-gen PWRs with far higher thermal outputs & hence only a single PWR is reqd today for Russia’s new-generation SSNs, SSGNs & SSBNs.

To ADITYA: It is an attempt to come up with an Indian counterpart of the S-400. But rest assured that no such SAM can intercept inbound sea-skimming supersonic ASCMs. They can intercept only those supersonic ASCMs that cruise at altitudes of between 13km & 16km.

To AYUSH: SSGns come armed with both torpedoes & long-range ASCMs (either tube-launched or vertically-launched), whereas SSNs come armed with only torpedoes. This therefore does not mean that a SSGN can’t function as a SSN. Today’s new-generation submarines like the UK’s Astute-class & France’s Barracuda-class can function as both SSNs & SSGNs.

To ANUP: Because the entire eco-system for supporting & operating the MiG-29UPG already exists & introduction of a new MRCA-type will only raise the IAF’s annual capital & revenue expenditures. Hence, better to go for additional MiG-29UPGs & Su-30MKIs.

To SUVO: 1) By acquiring precision-guided munitions that are GPS-guided, like the Excalibur & Pinaka-2. In addition, one must develop & procure versatile MBRL launchers that can launch 214mm, 300mm & 800mm rockets, as I have explained above to KAUSTAV. 2) Because such systems have existed in their inventories for a long time & hence all that they now need to do is develop new projectiles.rounds for such artillery systems.

To ARPIT KANODIA: All JF-17s use the KG-300 ASPJ pod mounted under the mid-section of the aircraft’s fuselage or even under the wing. There’s no internally-carried ASPJ.

Dear Indian

That comes from a skewed understanding of demographics & economics. There is no such strategy or conspiracy. Bengalis, Hindu or Muslim, were driven by economic necessity largely. Industrial development, economic opportunities to develop both in NE & Bangladesh is changing the situation faster as is modern education. BD is ahead of India on many HDI as well as industrial growth rate enabling lesser migration towards India & even reversing it. Fundamentalism will create such situations. The light of modern secular education can dispel it. But demography & cultural influence are factors that can't be ignored. Imagine a situation where Partition had not taken place; Given population growth rates would so-called Hindus be politically dominant?! It's wiser to not look at this through the prism of religion while accepting some inevitables of demographics. Ofcourse, religious Persecution of Minorities in BD has occurred but driven more by imperatives of economic materialistic greed for taking over property & assets of the less powerful in a lawless society. Also a system of beliefs, Islam that encourages conversion & adoption to a group compared to a religion, Hinduism that as practiced excludes & segregates, not the percepts of original entitled Sanatan Dharma which Indians no longer live by, practice or are even aware of.

1) Sir a very nice thread as always, but what is the planned induction timeline for the MGS induction, also don't you think the Chinese system is more agile as it is a more compact system compared to the Dhanush MGS.

2) Regarding the air defence gun requirements, the OFB revealed the 40mm air defence gun, was just wondering if there were plans to develop the system furthur to make it more autonomous and mobile, something like a SPAAG comparable to biho, shilka etc.

3) Shouldn't the DRDO or the appropriate agency create a common turret platform that can be integrated with armoured vehicles (arjun chassis, t90 chassis, bmp chassis, kestrel chassis) so as to maintain some kind commonality of parts amongst them thereby streamlining the logistic footprint. There can be different variants like air defence turret, mortar turret, mgs turret and the likes.
wont it be a better implementation rather that creating a unique turret for each kind of vehicle and roles and thereby increasing the logistic footprint.

ps: have been an avid follower of your blog for the past few years and love reading your articles that show the real image of the indian defence industry

Prasunda,

1. For this Balakot strike was it necessary to use the IAF ? Wouldn't it have been better to use a volley of Smerch rockets to level that terrorist training camp?

Balakot is just about 50kms from the LOC, 80 kms from Uri, so Smerch rockets with their 90km range could have easily done that job.

2. As you explained the retd. army officer said that a range of MBRL rockets with varying diameters should be developed, all of which can be launched from a common launch vehicle, like China's SR-5.

My counterpoint is if you want to give your rocket forces the option of different calibre rockets to use will triple the size of your logistic train to support your rocket artillery battery and supply enough rockets for the mission whatever it might be.

Thanks

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To SUJOY MAJUMDAR: 1) Then the PAF would not have retaliated, but the PA would have used its 300mm A100E MBRLs to hit targets inside India. In addition, Smerch-M rockets aren’t GPS-guided & hence are not pinpoint precision strike weapons. 2) Not quite, since the no of support/servicing vehicles & trans-loading would go down drastically. Also, a common-use MBRL launcher for different types of rockets also comes with standardised test-equipment, thereby doing away with the need for rocket-specific equipment.

To AYUSH: That’s a long-term project, as opposed to the IN’s immediate reqmt for the SSNs.

To VIKRAM GUHA: That’s right, but as awareness spreads, so will the demand for such homegrown solutions.

To VENKY: Both the Dhanush-52 & the motorised 105mm MGS are undergoing firing-tests at Itarsi after being subjected to certain IA-specified refinements.

To SHUKANTH CHATRATH: VMT. 1) The reqmt has existed since 1999 but various iterations of the Defence Procurement Policy guidelines since 2005 have delayed its procurement. The SH-15 is more compact for meeting the PLAGF’s air-mobility reqmts. The Dhanush-52 too can be air-lifted by C-17A Globemaster-IIIs. 2) The OFB-developed product is more suited for the IAF’s air base protection reqmts. The IAF does not want long-range ground mobility, unlike the IA which wants a self-propelled solution. 3) It is impossible to come up with either a common hull or common turret due to the different firepower/mobility reqmts for MBTs, ICVs & APCs.

To MOHAN: Let’s wait & see. Meanwhile, the first 8 JF-17B tandem-seat OCU trainers were rolled out yesterday after being ferried from Chengdu, Sichuan province, China. Here’s the video:
