ELBIT Systems At DEFEXPO 2012

Visitors to the booth (Israel Pavilion, Booth 11.10B) will have an excellent new multimedia presentation, “Fire Support in Action”, which will feature a live combat scenario demonstrating how Elbit Systems’ products and systems, focussing on its artillery and mortar arrays, provide ultimate fire-support and self-protection for manoeuvring forces in closing sensor-to-shooter loops. The presentation will allow viewers to experience a dynamic live combat mission with dramatic special effects, replicating how the systems work in fully realistic views. With regarding your previous answer, the Russian Thor M1 can be used as Counter-PGM. By further developing it the Kill ratio can be increased even more. Are there any current tactical lasers deployed not under development for counter PGM role.

To Anon@1.12AM: Tor-M1's usage will be an overkill and least effective. Tamir-type interceptors are far more cheaper, as their command-and-control/battle management centres & target acquisition/engagement systems are the same (EL/M-2082 Arudhra radar) as those employed for the Barak-2/8 & SpyDer-SR. Therefore, be it for intercepting combat aircraft, NLOS-BSMs, MBRL rockets cruise missiles or gliding-type PGMs, only different types of interceptors are reqd, while the command-and-control/battle management centres & target acquisition/engagement systems are one & the same--a most cost-effective solution.

Hermes 900 and Skylar I-le, i think is most likely to be the next UAVs to enter in the indian armed forces. What do you think ?? Somebody is already producing Skylark in India. Can Hermes 900 be used for precision bombing ??

Do you think IA will be interested in Dominator Integrated Infantry Combat System as you already said IA is interested in Raytheon and GD's Land Warrior ?

Do you think ATHOS and ATMOS artillery, Cardom mortars & 30mm unmanned turrets stand any chance for entering in IA ???

As far as BMS is concerned i think Indian BMS already shows fingerprints of Israel.

Indian soldier hardly use the sights for their guns. Is IA interested in improving their accuracy ??

Engager Remote Recon and targetting system is pretty good. Does IA has the need for this system or IA already have them ??

(IMI), M/s Rheinmetall Air Defence (RAD), Zurich, M/s Corporation Defence, Russia (CDR), M/s TS Kisan & Co. Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi and M/s RK Machine Tools Ltd., Ludhiana--from further business dealings with the Ordnance Factory Board, Department of Defence Production, MoD, for a period of ten years.
Neither SOLTAM Systems nor its parent company--ELBIT Systems--figures in this list. Therefore, Wiki is dead wrong.

What wiki says is that ATMOS is made by Soltam.

I was under the impression (hence the IIRC) that Soltam was blacklisted. I thought this to be the reason for not continuing the M46 upgrade to 155mm.

But after some digging, I have now learned that Soltam M46 upg had quality issues and infact Soltam is not blacklisted.

So, not wiki's fault but misinformation on my side.

Hey Prasun, u are absolutely wrong in your view that a tactical laser is best suited for countering air launched PGM. The Russian TOR M1/M2E and the Panstir S1 has been designed from the very outset as counter PGM systems. Intercepting glide bombs, LGBs with them would not be an overkill if using the Spyder SR to intercept H-2/H-4 glide bombs is not an overkill. Pls visit the ausairpower.net website, go to the SAM/IADS section and have a detailed word by word reading ontbe two articles about the Panstir S1 and ToR systems. The USAF is fielding a land based variant of the Phalanx CIWS to be used as both a counter PGM and counter RAM system. Visit the Rheinmetall website and see their Skyshield air defence system. It is based on the Skyranger system and is meant fir both the C-RAM and the C-PGM role. It is being designed to provide forward bases protection from MBRLs, mortar rounds, air launched PGMs. Tactical laser technology is still ages from being deployed. And can u pls site the range of Tamir missile? This can be modified to counter PGMs. The IAF and the IA should deploy the Skyranger or the Panstir systems in good nos. Pls reply.

So, can we be assured that all the major IAF airbases and army supply depots on the western front are well protected from the Pakistani Raad ALCM and the Babur LACM? And also what is the status if the Maitri QRSAM system ?

Prasun when a fighter aircraft range is specified take for example the F-22. Range is given only for the Subsonic flight envelop. What is the range of F-22 in Super-cruise only mode armed with internal weapons ?

On the comparision scale what will be the range (Expected) of PAK-FA equipped with the Super-Cruising AL-41F engines in subsonic and Super-Cruise envelop armed only with internal weapons.

You have previously mentioned that the Indian Su-30 MKI lack terrain following avionics compared to F-15. Why is this not being remedied ? After all Su-30's have open architecture. Both the fighters are primarily Air Superiority aircraft's ofcourse Su-30 is flexible multi-role aircraft than the F-15. Rafale has this feature but that does not mean that a scenario may not arise where a Su-30 with terrain guidance feature may make a difference. This equipment may not be required for the complete fleet but it would be useful to have them at-least in some aircraft's.

Is BEML offering some 155mm artillery or not ?? I am asking this because they have tie-ups with both SLOVAKS for 155mm Self Propelled Wheeled Gun and Poland for 155mm SP Tracked Gun Systems. I don't think anybody else has such tie-ups for artillery. Also i doubt SLOVAKIA and Poland will argue about ToT.

BEML also has tie-ups with General Dynamics Canada. Are they offering indian armed forces something ???
I know ti-ups is for DURO family of Light Armoured vehicles but i haven't seen BEML offering these either but they have tie-ups.

Is BEML offering FMBT and APCs also because they have tie-up with OBRUM, Poland for this ??

Also what is Pechora project ?? Apparently BEML has tie-up with Bumar, Poland to build vehicles for Pechora project.

Can U clear one thing, Y Indian men posted in MOD get stuck to one Nation...First it was Britain, then Soviet Union...& now seems Israel...Y sooooo. All these Soilder stuffs for next gen soilder F-INSAS as known to common men can procured by other nations too...Like Singapore, Germany Or even Britain too. Infact Singapore has advance next gen soilder concept...even their Anti-mine boots are being jointy researched by DARPA & ST.
India should learn from Turkey...how it patnered with Singapore and jointly made Advanced Howitzers, Electronic Industries...Y they are not taking benefit from Friendly neighbours and set up their own Industrial base.
Now Plz do focus on Singapore Defence Industries in ur article here.

Hey Prasun are you sure IA is using Spyder SAM ? I know in 2009 there was a $820 million program to procure QRSAM to equip 3 regiments with this contract, which is over twice the size of the IAF’s 18 squadron purchase.
The only thing is here after this there was no news abut this issue for almost 3 years. Either IA didn't purchase it or they are keeping secret. Why would they keep this as secret ?

Prasun now reports are coming that IA will chose Spike ATGM for infantry soldier. Is there some problem with Javelin procurement?? Why did IA chose Javelin in the first place because Spike is cheaper and more advanced ??

Do you think Ka226 can do the job of providing aerial support to armored vehicles during a conflict if its selected for LUH ?? I mean i can see Fennec as an armed gunship but Ka226 is not meant for this job. Its more useful in transportation and may be surveillance.

To Anon@5.19PM: It all boils down to what your definition of PGM is. For instance, there’s no cost-effective air-defence system available today that can neutralise PGMs like LGBs. Nor can the LGB be equated with ALCMs or gliding GPS-guided bombs in terms of destructive potential. Therefore, none of the existing systems like TOR M1/M2E, Panstir S1 (originally designed purely as anti-aircraft SAMs), Spyder SR, Skyranger, ADAMS, etc can defeat the threats from LGBs or GPS-guided JDAM-type bombs.
However, when it comes to defeating threats posed by heavy-calibre MBRLs like PHL-5 & A-100E, there is only one option presently available & that is the Tamir. Skyranger or the Panstir son;t even come close.

To Anon@5.33PM: All the major IAF airbases and army supply depots on the western front will be well protected from the Pakistani Ra’ad ALCM and the Babur LACM by only 2022. Maitri QR-SAM project is still in deep hibernation.

To SK: In supercruise mode, the range will be reduced by at least 50% & when using full afterburners, for takeoff & air combat the range decreases by two-thirds. That’s why aerial refuelling tankers are being increasingly sought nowadays. PAK-FA’s flight performance figures are still provisional since the powerplant is still not available for flight-tests. Regarding the Su-30MKI’s lack of terrain-following avionics, the deficiency will be rectified only after the AESA-MMR enters service with the Super Su-30MKI. Until then, the Jaguars IS & MiG-27UPG will remain the principal low-level interdictors for the IAF. Even if the existing Su-30MKI has an open-architecture avionics suite, where’s the space for installing a terrain-following radar? With existing mechanically-scanned & PESA airborne radars, there’s room for only one radar antenna & that’s why only the Mirage 2000D version can engage in terrain-following flight, because it has the Antilope-5 TFR and not the RDY. The other option is to acquire pods like LANTIRN & replace the Su-30MKI’s existing wide-angle HUD with a holographic HUD (like what China has done with its J-10 & J-11B) so that the infra-red imagery can be superimposed on the HUD for terrain-following navigation by night. Yet another option is to install new-generation distributed array of IRSTs like that developed for the MiG-35 so that one IRSAT sensor is scanning the airspace while the other (belly-mounted) is displaying the surrounding terrain NOT on am AMLCD as is the case with the MiG-35, but on a holographic HUD. For the FGFA, such a distributed array of IRS sensors has been developed and may well find their way on board the Super Su-30MKI as well.

To AGT: Let’s face it…the LAV was a lame-duck reqmt. What’s reqd is something like a JLTV like the Sandcat that can carry a hand-launched mini-UAV, has a built-in mini-FLIR turret, can launch up to four ATGMs like the LAHAT, and has soft-mounts for one 12.7mm heavy machine gun & one 30mm automatic grenade launcher.

To KSK: There are some anomalies in that report. Firstly, the LAC is 4,056km-long, and not 3,800km. Secondly , the INS Beas & INS Betwa wre both launched within five years of their keels being laid. Thirdly, as I had explained before, unlike the US, Japan, South Korea & China, Indian DPSU shipyards work in only single-shifts, as opposed to three-shift schedules of the above-mentioned countries. Put simply, Indian shipyards are plain unproductive.

To Anon@12.36AM: BEML can offer whatever it wants to from whosoever it wants to, but that does not mean the Indian Army will go for them. Also what is Pechora project ? Haven’t you heard abiout the IAF’s S-125 SAMs being upgraded with Polish help? This project is more than a decade-old.

To THINK TANK: The problem is elementary. Just like the absence of a national security doctrine & national defence posture that iught to dictate the terms & conditions for military force modernisation, there is also no defence-industrialisation roadmap available in India. Consequently, ad-hoc decisions get taken once every five years. Therefore, strategic disinvestments in DPSUs never take place and consequently, in its defence budget for FY 2012, the allocations for the capital account (for procuring major weapon systems) have been reduced in real terms. This was bound to happen sooner than later, as I’ve been harping about it for the past three years. While all over the world one is learning to achieve more with less by having lean-and-mean military capabilities, in India institutions like the Army are stuck in a time-warp and therefore resort to uncalled-for moves like raising four new infantry divisions and maintaining a MBT fleet comprising 4,000+ tanks! Mental or intellectual transformation continues to evade the Indian Army.

To Anon@9.36PM: The Javelin ATGM is on track. The Spike procurement is titally different since it involves a version of the Spike-SR called mini-Spike, which uses an expendable launcher.

To Anon@9.55PM: Neither the Fennec nor the Ka-226 can provide indirect or direct fire-support in the LUH configuration. Only the Cheetal can do that, since it has four launchers for cannistered ATGMs like the Helina or PARS-3LR, has a glass cockpit & also has a countermeasures dispenser suite integrated with MAWS, ALL DONE IN INDIA BY ALPHA TECHNOLOGIES PVT LTD.

To Anon@1.15PM: It was Lockheed Martin that taught ADA & ADE all the do’s & don’ts regarding the development of the Tejas Mk1’s FBW-FCS between the early 1990s and May 1998. It was Lockheed Martin that validated the FBW-FCS on board a VISTA F-16. Post-May 1998, ADA & ADE applied what they had learnt on to the Tejas programme.

Great article: however they are incorrect wrt PA readyness...the time now is closer to 48 hours...oh yess believe it....the new new Shabaz airbase is a step towards this too...IA needs to get its act together.

Operation Parakram, following the attack on Indian Parliament in 2001, had exposed that the Indian Army's strike corps took nearly 22 days to reach their border positions. Several redeployment and operational doctrines, validated during the tenures of Vij, J.J. Singh and Kapoor, had reduced this to 14 days. It was expected that Singh would reduce this further, especially since it was found that Pakistan could mobilise its strike corps within just 90 hours.

True it will take time but it will happen for good . by saying this am not defending the IA chief (VK Singh).After going through this report we should thank US for engaging Pakistan internally else they are known to hv courageous generals like Musharraf ,who never hesitate to do something which is beneficial to the Pakistan. Not to mention about our generals who only knows how to grab prime lands and Flats(Adarsh etc)

Hi , u said that the Panstir and Thor were designed as purely anti aircraft systems. But according to the article in ausairpower Australia the Panstir was designed to shoot down HARM antiradiaton missiles and protect the bigger components of the IADS such as S-300 missile battery. The TOR was also designed for such a purpose. In the article on the TOR and the Panstir in ausairpower Dr Carlo Propp has specifically mentioned that these two missile systems were specifically designed PGMs. By PGM I mean LGB, JDAM, glide bombs such as H-2/4 , tactical air to surface missiles and ALCM . If the Panstir can shoot down HARM then why can't it shoot down LGBs which are kinetically much less demanding. Also I visited the Rheinmetall site and there i saw a product which incorporates the Skyranger SPAAG turret and there it was mentioned it can shoot down mortar shells, artillery shells, MRBL. And if it posses such a capability then why can't it intercept PGMs? In a PDF docmennt in ausairpower , I learnt about a missile RIM-8 Talos which is capable of shooting down artillery shells in mid air. Also if the Tamir can intercept Heavy rockets and also mortar shells they obviously it can shoot down air launched PGM such as LGB. CAN U PLS TELL THE RANGE OF TAMIR missile? With Little modification it can effectively do so. Can u pla tell whether the MoD has future plans of procuring the TAMIR interceptors? Pls peply.

Is there any truth to BAE Systems claim that Jernas is the only missiles in its category that can deal with cruise missiles? It can't logically be true.

To DASHU: Regretably, restoring the internal health of the Indian Army is of no good un less the Army is not empowered by the MoD, i.e. in terms of clearly spelling out the higher directions for war. In the absence of such clear-cut directives, force transformation is IMPOSSIBLE since one does not know who the enemy is and how is the enemy to be countered. Consequently, all that the Army HQ can do is only try to second-guess what the Govt of India expects out of India’s armed forces. Consequent to this, neither doctrinal development nor a cohesive national defence posture will emerge. And we can all see the results of this: currently the Indian Army is organised, equipped and trained for traditional, second- and third-generation, industrial age, low- and medium-technology conflicts and for counter-insurgency and counter-terrorist operations within.

To Anon@11.20PM: Just leave aside for a moment what ausairpower Australia says or claims, and just try to give me a YouTube link or even a weblink showing photos of a HARM or Kh-31A/P missile being shot down by a Pantsyr S1 or a TOR-M1/M2E, or for that matter even a Vulcan Phalanx destroying an Exocet or Harpoon or Kh-35, or a Barak-1 shooting down an Exocet or Harpoon or Kh-35. After this we could discuss more about destroying “kinetically much less demanding” targets like LGBs and artillery rounds.

To FARIS: The acquired FLIR imagery are all displayed on the AMLCD-MFDs, since both the F/A-18D & Su-30MKM have only wide-angle HUDs. Land-attack cruise missiles can be countered by any existing quick-reaction SHORADS provided these LACMs are engaged over flat terrain. The ROLAND did so successfully as far back as 1991. That’s why LACMs that are supersonic or hypersonic and are capable of top-attack will be in high demand in future.

Hi, u said that low level penetration missions. Are carried out by the MiG-27 and the Jaguar IS of the IAF. But neither of these aircraft have any integrated IRST nor do they have a nose mounted terrain following radar. In fact they don't have any radar at all. They only engage targets by visual identification by the pilot. Then how can they fly at low level over complex terrain and under zero visibility conditions. The Tejas is equipped with a complete IDAS suite which comprises a MAWS and an inbuilt active array jammer. Then why can't the Su-30 MKI doesn't possess a MAWS, laser emission Warner and an inbuilt RF jammer capable of pulse, continuous and cross eye jamming. Will the entire fleet be fitted with these in the future? After all they are the best combat aircraft. Also our adversary PLAAF 's Sukhois are equipped with such equipment and they are well protected. Also what is the advantage of a UV based MAWS over an IR jammer? Pls reply.

To Swarop: No he's not Indian. He's operating the hand-held terminal common to both the battlefield management system & artillery fire-direction system. This very same terminal is being licence-assembled by BEL for the Indian Army's BMS, BSS & Shakti artillery fire-direction system.

Hi, can u pls tell how many Javelin ATGM are the IA purchasing? Why aren't we going for the Spike ATGM? The Spike is a 3rd gen missile like the Javelin. It possess IIR seeker, a tandem warhead. Their are many versions of it. The SR,MR,LR. Both the SR and the MR missiles weigh 14 KG. The MR version provides a range of 4 Km whereas the Javelin has only a range of 2.5 Km. Is a longer range Javelin version under developement and will the IA procure it? Also why the IA is procuring the SR version of Spike which has only a range of 800 m and it's function can be well accomplished by RPG-9. Pls reply.

To Anon@5.32PM: The Jaguar IS & MiG-27Ms are tactical strike aircraft whose sorties average only 1.5 flight-hours, of which only 45 minutes will be spent over hostile territory. During this time, only NVGs are used for situational awareness outside the cockpit. TFRs & LANTIRN pods are used only when long-distance flights averaging more than 2 hours in hostile airspace are flown, so that the aircrew stress-levels are lowered. After all, maintaining situational awareness and engaging in cockpit/weapon systems management, even if done by a two-man crew, is all highly stressful. All present-generation MAWS are multi-spectral (UV/IR).

To Anon@12.04AM: The Javelin AND mini-Spike are BOTH being acquired (about 3,000) for use by Para (SF) formations. MR ATGMs are not reqd since the Konkurs-M & Kornet are already in service. RPG-9 is unguided whereas the mini-Spike is guided.
