Aero India 2019 Highlights-1

Highlights of February 22
Highlights of February 21
I wonder who was the 'Genius' at HAL that conceived of the idea of showcasing a shipborne naval multi-role variant of the Dhruv ALH (above) with an executive seating layout!
Highlights of February 20
Looks like ADA has taken all my earlier recommendations quite seriously, if the maiden display of the Tejas AF Mk.2 MWF is to be believed!
The 23mm GSH cannon will be located on the red-coloured section between the canard and wing-rrot on the starboard side. Below is the Jaguar MAX being developed by HAL.
HAL is now also into turbofan-powered UAS platforms that can be remote-controlled by MRCAs!
ISRO this time has a sprawling pavilion, but its exhibits are extremely poor, scarce and there is no one to man this pavilion!
Miscellaneous Exhibits
The BrahMos-2 missile will have an X-band imaging monopulse seeker (below) developed and built by DATA PATTERNS, while a similar-looking Ku-band seeker developed by ECIL will go on-board the Nirbhay LACM.

Are radar warning receivers like R118 capable of detecting low probablity of intercept radars / AESA radars?

Thanks for uploading pre show pics, sir.
In the last pic, is it the super sonic drop tank of tejas???
which is that helicopter with folding tail, dhruv or RUAV???

Hi Prasunji,

DRDO sometimes develops many exciting Systems and they are well accepted by the Armed Forces. Case in point are Astra Missile, Bomb Material detection kit, Varunastra Torpedo, etc. Many Systems like MSMC carbine, ATAGS Howitzer, etc. show great promise. Yet we find that shoddy production of these products are really responsible for them turning out to be not upto the mark. Do you think that production agencies such OFB, HAL and others are more responsible or there is some coordination issue between DRDO and Production Agencies. What can be done to help overcome these issues and increase indigenous arms production.

Thanks & Regards

Lovely photographs! In the last two photographs, are the missiles under the inboard pylons on the Tejas Derby training rounds of some kind?

Again a timely thread, thanks again Prasun Da.

BTW what do think about the outcome of Kulbhushan Jadav case, in ICJ, especially in view of this:

Since, Pakistanis are trying to clinch whatever they can ?

Hi Prasun,

What is the difference between single hull and double hull submarine. Why Russia is moving from later to former. Is single hull has any advantage over double hull. What i know is single hull needs precious machining but double hull don't.

Sir
How is this f21 offered by Lockheed india specific.
Is it better than Rafale and F16 earlier offered.

Kaustav said...

Prasunda,

F-21, I prefer an either or situation for the MWF / AMCA It cannot be both. Unless, of course the AMCA gets defined as a 6th generation combat plane, whatever 6th gen gets defined as.
http://www.indiandefencereview.com/news/lockheed-martin-unveils-f-21-fighter-jet-for-india/

The SPORT version of Tejas as tandem seat LIFT trainer is ofcourse another logical variant and ofcourse long advocated by clear thinkers like you.

Srinivasa Nanduri said...

Hi Prasun,

The MWF/LCA mkII design looks incomplete. Is this what NAL designed after a decade.

Will it change/ improve or is this frozen design. Can't they go with a new design instead? Very disappointed.

And new f21, LM just got a India special name for f16blk70.

As of the pics the AAMs are mounted on a pylon, and the pylon is attached to under-wing pylon of Tejas. Doesn't that increase unnecessary weight and drag. Why the AAM specific pylon cant be directly mounted under-wing?

Ashish Gautam said...

Hello sir, hope u r enjoying the aero India....
Sir saw interviews done by livefist of Tejas head and Vivek lal.
As u predicted, Tejas Mk2 gonna be inducted by 2026 or even late as first flight is expected by Dec, 2023.
1 thing which made me happy was 11 hard points with pitch for Uttam AESA & IRST with internal fuel going up to 3300kg. Though these are on paper expectations, hope to see them meeting in required time frame.
(1)Plz tell about F-21's (as quoted by Vivek Lall) sensors being offered??? I saw something like a 3d map in a video by livefist. As Lockheed Martin is pitching hard for it, seems they will take it too.
2) Naval version of ALH as shown in pic is rudra version or Dhruv version??
3) which radar has been fianlised for Super su30mki upgrade???
4) any chances of putting AESA radar on Mig29UPG replacing it's problematic zhuk-M2E MMR???
5) the RUAV being proposed by HAL, can it fly?? If yes then problem of landing on a moving ship has been sorted out??
6) update on Ghatak, Rustom etc??
7) recent update on LUH?? Integration of EO pod couldn't be seen on TD-4.
8) Are they working to improve endurance and range of ALH class helicopters??
9) is India planning to buy some dedicated high performance ELINT/EW aircraft like tu-214 with absorption based sensors etc for IAF/ARC?? As I think they already have emission based sensors aircraft...
10) an out of context question, actually am just lil bit confused that's y asking. Arjun MK1A is having 1500hp Volvo engine or MTU 1400HP engine??? How problem of overheating has been sorted out???

So just absorb the photos uploaded above & I will answer all queries after Fabruary 23 since I am EXTREMELY BUSY with pre-scheduled meetings & seminars.

Prranshu Yadav said...

Great photos! In addition to my earlier query, I have a few more.

1. What is the missile listed at the bottom of the Jaguar max poster? Its name is hidden by the tail of the jaguar model.

2. Can you please give some info on the top most and second missiles in that list? The writing is obscure but I think it says "swarming air vehicle" and "smart cruise missile".

Same is explained here in technical terms: https://www.aviationtoday.com/2018/12/14/talking-gripen-es-innovative-avionics-saabs-development-lead/

With this DIMA platform, can we integrate new weapons ND sensors without the availability of its source-code or it will only reduce the integration time??

Dear Prasun,
Thanks for the dope. Really happy to see that Tejas AF Mk2 MWF is proposed with wing tip pylons for CCM, IRST, MAWS and canards. Also thankfully space for GSH 23 cannon has been found!!

Will wait for more dope on MWF from you.

Finally it seems the indigenous fighter programme is progressing on track.

Need to know what will be it's range without fuel tanks and with fuel tanks. Why are they not planning for CFTs instead of drop tanks?

Thanks in advance.

Gessler said...

@PRRANSHU YADAV - The last fully-visible missile is the SAAW, below that is the AGM-84L Harpoon-II Block-II anti-ship cruise missile (the blue one), below that is the AIM-132 ASRAAM IR-guided WVRAAM, and the bottom-most one is the Astra Mk-1 BVRAAM.

---

Prasun ji, thank you very much for this coverage, looking forward to much more from you in the coming days!

Something about the already revealed poster of Jaguar MAX is bugging me...the missile listed second from top on the same poster as Prranshu Yadav questioned you about. It says "Smart Cruise Missile", I have looked up other photos of the same poster on Twitter and upon closer inspection it's revealed that the words "ARM-X1" are written on the body of that missile.

Close-up: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dz2u-UxWkAAgmC0.png

So what is this ARM-X1? Considering the fact that the rest of the missiles on this poster are pretty well-made accurate depictions of real weapons which are either already in service (like the CBU-105 & Harpoon) or planned inductions, I'm led to believe this Smart Cruise Missile "ARM-X1" isn't just some place-holder name.

Is this the Subsonic CALCM that you long ago hinted that we needed? Because I doubt we can procure enough SCALP-EGs for the whole IAF, it's a pretty expensive missile.

Thanks you in advance!

Tejas mk2 and Gripen NG have almost similar aerodynamic design (wing design + canard) having same engine, due you think mk2 will outclass Gripen in aerodynamic performance in various parameter leaving aside the sensor and electronic performance.

Sir yeh "time and place of our choosing" kya hai? Armed forces should have retaliated strongly by now considering that they have prior military action plans in case of big terrorist attacks like Pulwama. Then why has nothing neen done even after 6 days? I am watching Pakistani media and it boils my blood to see them enjoying and laughing on us.

Arey nai sir comparison Vali koi bat nai hai as things are beyond any comparison.
Vo to just saw video that's y I asked. It's fine ap free ho k Aram se answer kriyega. Thanks.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To GESSLER: VMT. As you are well aware, I will upload several more photos & brochures in the coming days. The ARM-X1 is actually the Scalp-EG air-launched LACM. BTW, I told HAL to develop a similar panoramic AMLCD installation as on the Jaguar MAX for the Tejas Mk.2 MWF as well since I’m 100% sure the IAF will ask for it in the not-to-distant future. Also told the ADA techies to install a SATCOM suite aft of the cockpit since such installations will enable the MWF to receive battle management situational awareness updates in real-time from AEW & CS platforms, since tactical data-links using L-band or Ku-band or S-band transceivers are constrained by range-limitations

To VED: The supersonic underbelly fuel tank + inflight refuelling probe will be enough for range enhancement . CFTs increase drag & affect agility during dogfights. Hence, there’s no need for it. Also, if range enhancement is reqd, then the supersonic fuel tanks can also be installed under the wings.

To DHARMIN: Source-codes are not shared as a rule. Hence, it is better not to believe what some OEMs say as part of their marketing efforts.

To SBM: That is an inert training round for display only.

To PRRANSHU YADAV: Yes, the R118 & the R-128 now being developed will be able to detect all such emissions.

Prasun,

-the F -21 looks more like a combination of f16 blk 60(the spine is definately from blk 60 which has added electronics) + f 16 blk 70... anything additional? new stealth coating or material used? also why not get the thrust vectoring nozzle?
- as the US/lockheed martin is so desperate to sell us their jets why not opt for the F-16U Falcon-21 configuration as u had explained in your blog
- why canards and not LEVCONs of the type already developed for the IN’s LCA (Navy) Mk.1 MRCA.wouldn't canards compromise on RCS?
- why did ADA not stick to the original design as shared by you in your post 'http://trishul-trident.blogspot.com/2017/08/lca-af-mk2-can-still-become-reality.html'
- Is bramhos-NG anywhere being actually considered or just a fantasy
- Finally What is Jaguar MAX all about .. and why is it sporting a panaromic cockpit display while tejas mk2 cockpit is not?? & why is ada/drdo proposing such advances on decades old jags when they are planned to be retired in early 30's

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To VARUN: Right now everything north of the Pir Panjal Range is covered with snow & will be so till May-June, so if any action is to be taken by the IA< then it will have to be to the south of Pir Panjal Range, i.e. in southern Jammu. But the IAF has some things up its sleeve & this time airpower likely will be employed across the LoC inside PoK.

To JUST_CURIOUS: Also, pay close attention to the F-21's circular hump over the spine, which houses the SATCOM suite. Jaguar MAX is mostly about the new panoramic AMLCDs & a new-generation mission computer to cater to the EL/M-2052 AESA-MMR that can concurrently perform airborne target detection/tracking, ground moving target indication, terrain obstacle avoidance cue generation, weather search & aircraft traffic collision avoidance.

PrasunDa,

Right at the outset THANK YOU for posting such high resolution images of various products being displayed on Aero India. It's a gift for those of us who could not/cannot attend the event.

Re the Pulwama attack, there must be no doubts about the ultimate source of the Pulwama terrorist attack - Pakistan Army & not some jihadi group. By laying the blame at the doorstep of JeM in this case or of the LeT in others, we are only diluting the responsibility of the actual perpetrator of terrorism.

Therefore, I feel any military action that GoI plans to take should be directed entirely against the Paki military that causes a devastating effect on the Paki military.

Only then will the Pakis learn to behave.

Thanks & Regards,

2. Only 9 Hard Points ?
3. IRST and Canard Missing ? Or may be I couldn't sopt it.

Is Pakistan army is going to get ass kicking of a lifetime, or government will do some surgical strikes on terrotist centres along with diplomacy to comfort indian public.

I think only disproportionate reaponse by us can prevent future suicide bombings,
otherwise our security forces will face a nightmare in Kashmir in future

Aditya Kamble said...

Really waiting for more updates in this thread especially regarding the two variants of the IMRH since IAF now seems to be committed to it.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To KUNAL JADHAV & VARUN KUMAR: Yes, the bulk weapons orders were not ordered until now. That’s why the IA has since 2017refused to take delivery of its Rudras until they were armed with FZ-supplied 2.75-inch (70mm) rockets & Mistral ATAMs. It was this fracas that prevented HAL from receiving payments from the IA & this was what had led to HAL’s short-term cashflow (liquidity) crisis. But today THALES’ Belgium-based FZ subsidiary stated that the order for 2.75-inch rockets had been placed by India & a similar order will be placed with MBDA for Mistral ATAMs.

BTW, here’s the band of ‘desi bandalbaazes’ at the expo:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dz6ZVz1XcAASgYq.jpg

The bandalbaaz from BUSINESS STANDARD really made a fool of himself earlier today by asking 4 totally silly questions at the HAL press conference, & he was totally silenced by the answers from HAL’s management.

To VARUN, VARUN KUMAR & VIKRAM GUHA: There is still the possibility of at least 5 more attacks being staged in the near future, given the estimates now coming out about the quantum of RDX smuggled into J & K. Perhaps this is what Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi was referring to when he stated 3 days ago that Pakistan will retaliate if India attacked his country. And mind you, he didn’t spell out whether Pakistan will retaliate militarily, or whether the retaliation will be in the form of more terror strikes involving suicide-bombings.

To VIKRAM GUHA: BTW, this is the US-based OEM whose AMLCDs are on the Do-228's HAL-designed glass cockpit:

https://genesys-aerosystems.com/

The certificate of airworthiness will be sought by HAL from CEMILAC.

Ved said...

Dear Prasun,
I believe Lockheed Martin is very desperate to bag the order. With the FOC of Tejas MK1 and MWF in the pipeline I think we don't need it.May be we can utilise the same fund for MWF Tejas mkII. Your opinion please.

I also agree with your opinion that India's retaliation would be through airstrikes.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To VED: LoLz! let's get the fundamentals right. FOC for ADA/HAL means final operational clearance, whereas for the IAF, FOC means full operational capability. The two are TOTALLY DIFFERENT. Hence, for ADA/HAL FOC means delivering a product with several watered-down performance parameters, whereas for the IAF it will be IMPOSSIBLE to declare its 2 Tejas Mk.1 squadrons as having achieved full operational capability simply because all 40 Tejas Mk.1s will be devoid of: 1) GSH-23 cannon; 7 2) lack of a comprehensive EW suite, especially the internal jammer that is so vital for self-defence. Therefore, in light of all this, let us elect to stay sober & not jump to over-estimations on the emergence of a fully functional Tejas AF Mk.2 MWF in the following decade. And the world's foremost aerospace OEM (Lockheed Martin) that not only earns tens of billions of US$ every years from its declared product sales, but also several tens of billions of US$ from the US Defense Dept's 'black projects', will never be desperate to bag an order for just 114 MRCAs from India, kindly rest assured. And that's also because Lockheed Martin knows only too well that the F-21 offer is the most realistic & mouth-watering that any OEM can ever make to India.

Prasun,

-can you throw some light on the following ..http://idrw.org/aero-india-2019-former-vice-chief-of-iaf-offers-four-missiles-to-armed-forces/ ... some details about their products & the possibility of them being bought by IAF/IN
- why the jaguar max now ?? is it worth the effort on an ageing platforms that too when the most basic engine upgradation is not happening. Also I did see an interesting point on the pic you shared having the details of what would entail 'Max' features(irst, flat panel screenadvanced queing systems etc).. engine upgradtion was put as optional.. my take is all these features should go into the Mk1 A

Sir

Just read tweets from Vijainder K Thakur about LCA navy Mk2

https://twitter.com/vkthakur

According to him

The IAF #MWF (#LCAMk2) design is less matured than the #LCANavyMk2 design. My understanding is that the close coupled canards aren't a done deal. Their negative impact on RCS and their underwhelming aerodynamic payoff during initial wind tunnel testing cast a doubt.

GE has given ADA a presentation on the GE 414EPE but hasn't yet received US govt clearance for its sale. Initial batch of #LCANavyMk2 would hence be powered by GE 414 INS6 engines with 35% more power than the GE 404

ADA is pursuing #LCANavyMk2 as a clean state design featuring optimized deck handling, minimized approach speed (via use of vortex flaps), lighter undercarriage (via outboard shift of wings), active CG control (via pump based fuel transfer)

Major tweaks in #LCANavyMk2 design - ADA does away with Levcons, introduces stabilators (Ah ha! It now has tail plane thingies!) & vortex flaps based on CFD simulations optimization #AeroIndia2019

Is he correct ?

Your take on LCA Navy

To AYUSH: The General is merely echoing what I have been explaining for the past 3 years. Areas across the LoC that can be captured within 10 days will be the Haji Pir Pass & the Bugina Bulge in Leepa Valley. The 2 most used routes of infiltration by Pakistan lie in these 2 areas, i.e. Toothmaar Gali & Reeshmaar Gali. I have also explained what needs to be done in the Chicken's Neck area in an article that appeared yesterday in the Aero India Show daily of FORCE magazine. Will scan & upload that article tomorrow night.

To VARUN KUMAR: Kindly rest assured that there is SCANT interest in the LCA (Navy) Mk.2 by all concerned. And that's why there is no scale-model being displayed at the expo of this variant of the Tejas Mk.2 MWF.

Gessler said...

Hi Prasun ji, many thanks for the previous reply. However, I must ask - are you positive that the ARM-X1 is actually SCALP-EG? Why did they re-name it? Because this one is locally made?

Also, the design of this ARM-X1 seems significantly different to the SCALP, for starters, the air inlets are on the sides (like on the Taurus KEPD-350) instead of on the bottom, which is where SCALP draws air from.

In fact, this ARM-X1 to me seems almost an exact copy of the Taurus airframe design (sans the lack of an optical sensor in the nose), if it weren't for the fact that either Taurus or SCALP weigh around 1.3 to 1.5 tons, whereas the Jaguar in the poster is depicted as being able to carry 5 of these (which should be impossible on the outer wing stations on this plane), which easily exceeds the maximum payload capability of the Jaguar anyway, even if we take an uprated engine into account.

Can you confirm this missile is indeed a SCALP version?

VMT in advance, loving the coverage of the show!

Pakistan Army has made four dumps in the Kot, Satrah, Daska and Gujranwala of Shakargarh Bulge.''Any development in Shakargarh Buldge is very alerting. This area is very close to Pathankot, Kathua and India's National Highway-1 connecting Kashmir to the rest of the country and passes few kilometres from near the International border. In case of war these dumps can play a significant role,'' said a senior defence source. As per another report, Pakistan has built two ammunition depot in Rahim Yar Khan across Jaisalmer to ensure that its forces receive arms on the border in no time.Pakistan has also built helipads in the premises of the ammunition depot to further assist its soldiers along the border. The depot is merely 37 kilometres away from the Indian border. In another depot in Bahawalpur, Pakistan has built many bunkers to save their ammunition in case of an attack by the Indian Air Force (IAF). The bunkers would also allow Pakistan to place its missiles in close proximity to the border. From building bunkers to missiles and even warships, China has been assisting Pakistan in modernising its military.

Prasunji, here are a few questions I have

1. As per your assessment and as per recent reports, Brahmos ng is supposed to be used in air to air role to shoot down enemy AEWACS and other large aircraft like refuelling tankers. But if I am right most AEWACS aircraft can detect fighters 400 km away and brahmos ng will have a range of 300 km. Wouldn't that be a problem?

2. While AEWACS aircraft could be detected from far away due to its radar emissions, I don't think a fighter's radar is powerful enough to detect refuelling tankers from a distance of 300 km. So how will bhromos ng be used by fighters to take them out from that distance?

3. I had read that the air force finds NGARM too heavy. Has that issue been resolved? Will NGARM be carried by smaller fighters like Jaguar too?

I like the look of the new LCA MK2. With this I can't see the need to import F-16 aka F-21. The question is can we deliver it?

If we know where the infiltration is coming from, why aren't we capable of closing them down?

If what this senior gentleman says is correct, then do we need to change the game plan?

Hi Prasun,

If we ended up buying F-16 or F-21, don't you think that we can't use them against Pakistan as they also have the same family of fighter jets( even we buy the latest version). We can't use them against China. Then why we are looking for F-16 / F-21. Kindly clarify me, against whom we can youse this fighter. If we are simply buying them to fill the number, I don't know why it can't be our own jet even it is inferior one...

To DASHU: As I had explained before, the problem is NOT Pakistan, but China. The latter has since 2007 been insisting that the LAC’s length is not 4.057km, but only 2,000km & this does not include the Sino-Indian portion along J & K. What this means is that China has been openly claiming since 2007 that J & K is a disputed territory, contrary to all UNSC resolution. The same was evident 24 hours ago when China was unsuccessfully insisting that the term Jammu & Kashmir be replaced by the term ‘India-Administered Kashmir’ Why has China taken such a stand? Elementary: since 2007 China had been wanting to implement CPEC & for this to happen, it was imperative that the real-estate of PoK become a permanent portion of Pakistan. And this in turn is what emboldened Pakistan to go all out in creating mayhem inside J & K. Hence, if a long-term solution to J & K is to be found (inclusive of wresting away PoK from Pakistan by any means), then the key challenge is to neutralise China’s now-decisive say in such matters. So how does one go about it? Not by mere retaliatory revenge-attacks like tactical cross-LoC military operations, but instead by focussing entirely on building up MILITARY POWER. Right now, the national mood in India is totally oblivious to this reality & that’s why almost everyone is clamouring for only application of MILITARY FORCE & that too only at a tactical level, like hitting back across the LoC like what was done in the past.

To SIDHARTH: All four main rotor-blades are folded from the main rotor-hub onwards, rest assured.

To GESSLER: I will not read too much into what are generic renditions of weapons. In any case, aircraft now dedicated for tactical strike like the Jaguar IS will most unlikely be used for launching ALCMs. And this also explains why the BrahMos-NG was shown underslung on the Tejas Mk.1, but wasn’t on any Jaguar IS. Hence, let us not get bogged down by hair-splitting on whether the generic ALCM shown is a Scalp-EG or a Taurus. And we all can also agree to the fact that the generic ARM-X1 shown is definitely not an ARM since no one else in the world has designed an ARM with such aerodynamic features as those depicted in the poster.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To SUVO: That’s old & stale stuff, since under a nuclear overhang, no one in their right mind will ever think of going on the offensive across the IB.

To PRRANSHU YADAV: 1 & 2) Not if the BrahMos-A or BrahMos-NG have L-band data-links to receive targetting updates from friendly AEW & CS aircraft. 3) The IAF cannot expect any NG-ARM to be both lightweight & long-range. So, something will have to give.

To RAT: Looks can always be deceptive. Infiltration routes along high-altitude areas that are thickly forested & that run across rivers & rivulets cannot be fenced. The same applies in the plains where there’s riverine terrain. Hence, it is impossible to ensure ZERO infiltration across both the LoC & in the plains of northern Punjab.

To MAN VAN: As I’ve explained above, the principal threat isn’t Pakistan, but China. India’s existing Su-30MKI fleet strength is more than enough to destroy the entire PAF.

Sir would you elaborate on uttam Aesa radar max power output and TR module comparison with respect to contemporary chinese, Isalie and French radar. What would be it's section range for 1 m2 RCS . Could a scaled up model of it can be installed on Su30 mki and might 29 yog.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To VED: It is the Ghaatak SLR. And why should it not be displayed? OFB has a booth, as do MDSL, GRSE & GSL.

Meanwhile, the PA's COAS has visited the Chirikot & Baghsaar sectors in PoK, meaning he expects an IA retaliation in the southwestern Poonch area opposite these 2 sectors. For, as I had explained earlier, north of the Pir Panjal Range, the snows won't stop melting before late April.

To Fighter_Hunter: The UTTAM as it now exists is just an experimental endeavour & is far far away from becoming a production-standard AESA-MMR. Hence, a comparative benchmarking with the world's production-standard AESA-MMRs will be a futile exercise.

Prasun ,

- whatever happend to kaveri engine, is the co- development progressing or is it stalled? why is it not on display in the show? points to serious issues
- why is ADA insisting on a 110KN engine for AMCA. When it knew that there were no engines of this class why didn't it factor this fact and opt for a design accommodating a more powerful engine already available (GE 110 or P&W f100 etc) ..like any aircraft there will always be upgrades & improvements which will require additional power/thrust.. my take is the ada might be factoring the epe derivative of the GE414 as a fallback option as this will be the same engine powering tejas mk2(speaking of which i feel its still a lame design for a fighter which is to join @10 years in the future).. your thoughts on the same..
- is F21 a good choice for IN's heavy weight torpedos for scorpene/ arihant class subs?
- does the naval dhruv with folding blades fit in for the NUH opportunity for IN?
- is the jaguar max upgrade an extension of the darin 3 upgrade planned or is HAL supposed to produce new jags?

A news report in IDRW says procurement for 100 heavyweight torpedoes approved for scorpene (& possibly even the nuke subs !). Can these not be bought under emergency procedure like army bought assault rifles ? This is quite quick.

To DASHU: I’m afraid they still don’t & neither are they interested as of now. As an illustration, allow me to share an anecdote with you. Back in 2008, after witnessing a mobility-cum-firepower demo by the IA’s T-90S & FH-77Bs at Pokhran, the then RM A K Antony asked Gen Deepak Kapoor, the then COAS of the IA, in view of everyone “which of the two cannons—that of Bofors & that of the T-90S—was better?” The totally flabergasted COAS, in front of all his subordinbates from the IA, was at a loss to explain to such a MORPON the difference between the two different types of cannons & their differing missions. Since then, matters haven’t changed much, as was explained last night by Dr.Ajai Sahni here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1g3F4P2InU

To KAUSTAV: Let me in turn share 2 examples of how such good intentions are totally shattered by the ‘desi idiots’:

Example 1: Between the mid-1980s & early in the previous decade, when MDSL used to import the fibre-glass sonar domes from the UK & later Germany for the IN’s warships, these domes were kept inside warehouses with no temperature-control. And since the IN’s Naval Design Bureau could never freeze the design of ‘indigenously designed’ warships prior to metal-cutting, these sonar domes used to rot in the warehouses for up to 3 years. So, after they were installed on the warships, due to the hot-cold temperature variations they had experienced, all these domes developed cracks within a year of their usage by the warships. Consequently, no foreign OEM wants to set shop to locally manufacture such domes in India because they don’t want to sully their reputation due to the nonsensical warship production irregularities of the IN.

Example 2: Russia has been proposing for the past 4 years that its state-owned R & D institutes team up with the DRDO for joint research into seekers for all types of guided-missiles. But the DRDO has been stonewalling this proposal because it fears that it will have to send a high number of its personnel (i.e. the so-called scientists) for first learning the Russian language for a period of no less than 2 years, & this in turn will cause such personnel to lose out on their promotion-scales!

Later tonight I will share the story behind the topmost slide uploaded in this thread.

To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) The same old Kaveri turbofan that used to be shown at all previouis expos was on show this time as well. But with the announcement that the GE’s F414 will power the Tejas AF Mk.2 MWF, all previous statements made by Dr. S. Christopher about SAFRAN/Snecma helping out with the Kaveri now practically stand nullified. 2) Let anyone say anything about the AMCA, but unless the Tejas AF Mk.2 MWF surfaces, there’s no hope of the AMCA entering the developmental stage. So, common-sense dictates that all mention of the AMCA must be put to an end before the rollout of the first Tejas AF Mk.2 MWF prototype. 3) F-21 is the ONLY other choice, unless Leonardo is removed from the blacklist of the MoD, which will enable ptocurement of the Black Shark HWT. Also, the much-touted guided-HWT variant of the Varunastra is another decade away from being offered to the IN in a fully developed & functional form. 4) You will have noticed by now that the naval Dhruv variant showcased by HAL at the expo does not possess either a MMR not a FLIR turret. So how exactly can it be offered for the NUH reqmt? 5) It is an extension of the DARIN-3 project because the original DARIN-3 cockpit design was dictated by the then choice by the IAF of the EL/M-2032 MMR. But the subsequent choice of the EL/M-2052 changed the reqmts for cockpit displays.

To VENKY: No, because the expenditure for such a project exceeds that for which the VCNS is authorised to proceed without any approvals from the MoD.

To SARAN: If cars are allowed to be parked in a maidan full of uncut dry grass, what else can anyone expect? So, if there’s any conspiracy, then the key conspirators are those who failed to strip the maidan of such dry uncut grass. And since that maidan is IAF-owned real-estate, then I guess the ‘conspirators’ are all wearing IAF uniforms.

To DUSHYANT HARDAHA: Will upload the scanned brochure of the UAS in the coming days. That will explain everything.

Sad, but very true. Thanks of course, for continuing to expose the rot in our existing systems whether it is DRDO/HAL or even the so-called Builder's Navy. But that is the very reason, we need options from Indian Industry, not the PSUs but the congolmerates like Tata, Godrej, Kalyani, Reliance (would have preferred Mukesh's RIL), L&T, Mahindra, even Adani, Punj Lloyd, Ashok Leyland, Kirloskar etc. with support from the nimble technocrat SMEs like Alpha Design, MKU etc. and numerous startups and engineering fabrication workshops.

Maybe, having on their boards, a government representative like the Defense PSUs would help generate business & revenue.

Thanks, Prasun da for the excellent coverage of AeroIndia, Now I only have 1 question, The timeline for MWF/MK2 that you described states the first flight in 2026. Now I think your timeline seems more believable and rational.

Why is it that ADA and DRDO officials are spouting so ambitious deadlines? Initially ADA project head of Tejas MK2 said first flight by 2023 end, now by the end of AeroIndia DRDO chief is claiming by the end of 2021. Wouldn't it make sense to be sensible about the deadlines to ensure that there is no backlash in the future because of delays?

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To THE INDIAN: Scorpene SSKs will have either Black Shark or F-21 HWTs that are compatible with the SUBTICS combat management system, while the SSBNs will have Russia-origin HWTs. European torpedo tubes use compressed air to eject the HWTs, while Russian tubes allow the water to flood the tube & then the HWT’s propellers are activated for the HWT to swim out of the tuibe, while US torpedo tubes use a rammer to forcibly eject the HWT out of the tube.

To RAD: Those so-called models of missiles from AM Deo all display 1 characteristic: a total negation of all the known laws of physics. Hence, kindly rest assured that they will NEVER become functional weapons of any kind. All SAMs & AAMs nowadays have TVC, including the ones developed by DRDO. AESA seekers are still a few years away from being offered to countries like India. So far, only Japan has succeeded in having such functional AESA seekers. Akash-1S will have an IIR seeker as well as the same ‘desi’ Ku-band seeker as that on Astra-1 BVRAAM. Will upload the brochure of this seeker within a fortnight. CMD installations will come up throughout the Saurashtra & western Maharashtra coastlines. I had already uploaded the poster of the NG-ARM way back in April 2018 after the DEFEXPO 2018 expo. Of course it will be heavy if it has to house 2 types of passive homing heads (high-band & low-band) as mandated by the IAF.

To LUDWIG: VMT. Why over-ambitious project deadlines? Because old habits die hard, I guess. And that’s why experienced former project managers & engineers are now joining the private-sector companies in droves & are now openly revealing how poor the DRDO’s in-house product engineerinmg capabilities are.

To VIKRAM GUHA: It’s all about application of either MILITARY FORCE or MILITARY POWER, which no one seems to be explaining in detail to the ‘desi media’ outlets. MILITARY FORCE means undertaking the usual one-off counter-strike merely for exacting a short-term Badlaa/revenge while not causing any medium-term/long-term damage/loss to the adversary. On the other hand, MILITARY POWER application entails the causing of massive & enduring pain to the adversary, whose after-effects will linger on for decades. For instance, if the lattere is to be exercised, then India will have to:

1) Create a strategic tie-up with the likes to Iran, Afghanistan & the Central Asian Republics & consequently will have to declare that the Durand Line isn’t a legitimate international boundary.

2) Supply Afghanistan with offensive armoured & field artillery weapons so that the ANA can effectively counter & defeat the PA’s frequent incursions across the Durand Line.

3) Base at least 1 squadron of MRCAs like the MiG-29UPG & 1 Squadron of MR-SAMs at an air base inside Afghanistan under Kabul’s invitation so that this prevents the PAF from routinely violating Afghanistan’s airspace.

Only these will severely rattle Pakistan & usher in the 3-front conundrum for Islamabad. Consequently, this will further stretch the PA’s & PAF’s deployment footprints along its western & eastern borders, thereby preventing the PA & PAF from maintaining numerical parity with the IA & IAF. Only after such a status has been achieved will it be possible for the IA & IAF to jointly stage limited but high-intensity operations across the LoC with the aim of capturing significant chunks of real estate within PoK within a span of 10 to 14 days.

So once again, I repeat: MILITARY POWER application is the need of the hour & not the application of MILITARY FORCE as most Indians seem to be clamouring for.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To Sajjan Kandolkar: VMT, but this was only to be expected & anyone with common-sense could see it coming sooner rather than later.

To ASHISH GAUTAM: 1) A lot of the F-21’s sensors wil be derivatives of those already developed for the F-35 JSF. 2) Dhruv version, without FLIR turret & without search radar & MAD sensor & without any weapons. So of what use is such a shipborne NUH? Maybe it was displayed at the expo merely as a JOKE. 3) The same that was finalised way back in 2011 & about which I wrote a report in any earlier thread at that time. 4) Of course. 5) RUAV means it can fly, isn’t it? What kind of question is that? 6) Nothing at all. Rustom-1 wasn;t shown at all, meaning that project is dead/terminated/buried. There’s no Rustom-2 now & it is called Tapas. 7) It is due for certification this June. FLIR turret under the chin will be COMPASS, same as that on Rudra, LCH & Mi-17V-5. 8) No. 9) RFI for 9 such platforms was issued in 2017 itself. 10) 1,400hp MTU engine. There’s no overheating problem at all.

To SUDIPTA PATHAK: Underwing pylons are always universal & therefore they always have to use weapon-specific ejector racks.

To THE INDIAN: As I had explained several times before, Kulbhushan Jadhav can never be released because in case he does go free, he will reveal everything about his kidnapping.

To JUST_CURIOUS: Those so-called models of missiles from AM Deo all display 1 characteristic: a total negation of all the known laws of physics. Hence, kindly rest assured that they will NEVER become functional weapons of any kind.

To PINKAL SHAH: 1) No it is not correct since parameters differ for MRCAs & missiles. 2) It should get underway later this year. 3) No. 4) Yes, the Akash-1S will have an IIR seeker as well as the same ‘desi’ Ku-band seeker as that on Astra-1 BVRAAM. Will upload the brochure of this seeker within a fortnight. 5) Have already done that. 6) Not before 2021. 7) Yes, all of them. 8) Nothing new to update. 9) The export version of 3M22 Zircon.

To SRINIVASA NANDURI: The additional CAPF accretions were rushed there to quell any potential disturbances due to the detention of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders & other Sunni religious clerics who have been spreading religiosity-inspired Wahhabi/Salafist bigotry throughout the Valley since the early 1990s. Had such a crackdown been undertaken & had a proper legal process been initiated back then for their eventual prosecution & sentencing, then today the Kashmiri Pandits would not have been reduced to internally displaced refugees in their own land.

Sir from your reply to VIKRAM GUHA about MILITARY FORCE or MILITARY POWER, it can be safely concluded that PoK is gone from India's hand permanently if the approach is to create the 3 front scenarios for Pak and then take it back, am not even talking about whether India will be able to retain the current Indian state of J&K (which is known outside of India as IoK), especially after China putting its full weight behind Pak .

To JUST_CURIOUS: What next for Kaveri? The answer is common-sensical: if HAL with 40 times more financial resources than GTRE cannot develop even a 25kN-thrust turbofan like the HTFE-25 within a decade, then how can anyone sane expect GTRE with far less resources to develop a 98kN-thrust Kaveri between 2016 & 2030, when such a turbofan is reqd for the Tejas AF Mk.2, even by using a SAFRAN/Snecma-supplied engine core? Do you really think SAFRAN/SMECMA or for that matter any turbofan manufacturer will help another potential competitor like GTRE or HAL to global;ly compete in the turbofan development/production business? If anyone thinks that SAFRAN/SNECMA is so stupid to do so, then he/she is definitely in dire need of psychiatric counselling.

To DASHU: What can be safely concluded is that if PoK someday reverts back to Indian sovereignty, then it will NOT DUE due to the smartness of India’s decision-makers, but due to the fact that the Pakistani decision-makers are far more stupid than their Indian counterparts, luckily or fortunately. How come? Just view this press conference of the ISPR’s DG:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jI7gZGVAav8

Only a thoroughbred idiot will pass on the buck to the Almighty for his/her failures, by qualifying each statement of intent/will with the word INSHALLAH (if God Wills So). For, as the divine laws state, the Almighty never helps those who don’t help themselves. And as for that videoclip of that Ramesh Kumar fella, that’s his own personal spin in order to boost his credentials within the PTI party. No one, especially the UNSC members inclusive of China, has taken such claims seriously & hence the unanimous UNSC statement calling upon Pakistan to crack down on the JeM without any further delay. Crucial forensic evidence of Pakistan’s complicity in the Pulwama suicide-bombing had already been supplied by then to all the UNSC members, including DNA data & NADRA ID data of the Pakistani terrorists that were gunned down by the IA within 100 hours of the suicide-bombing. Had such evidence not been supplied by India, the UNSC would not have issued its statement. As for IOK, that term is used only by Pakistan. Elsewhere, it is either IAK or J & K, especially in all the Central Asian Republics whose official survey maps have always shown J & K to be an integral part of India.

To RAD: Till to date, no one has ever claimed that the BrahMos-2 will be INDIGENOUSLY developed. All R & D work now being undertaken by BrahMos Aerospace concerns only the BrahMos-A & BrahMos-NG variants—in which there’s actove Russian participation. And how can Akash-1 have W-band seeker when it has a semi-active L-band beam-riding mechanism? And the Nag & HELINA both have IIR seekers. Only the SANT will have a W-band MMW seeker, whose photo I had already uploaded above on February 20 itself:

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-F591EfhY5Rk/XG6TkX9W2yI/AAAAAAAAQvg/2VjVVm0mzPsK9Qeq9g84WN4jlC4gGWIyACLcBGAs/s1600/SANT%2BMissile%2527s%2BMMW%2BSeeker%2Bbuilt%2Bby%2BAnanth%2BTechnologies.jpg

And lastly, the same Ku-band active seeker developed for the Astra-1 (whose image was also uploaded above) will also be used by the Akash-1S. This will be followed by the Akash-NG that will have BOTH the Ku-band active seeker as well as a local;ly-developed IIR seeker.

To MAN VAN: Thjat was explained in a earlier thread that also explained in detail what the UNSC resolutions were all about & how they were drafted back in 1948.

To KANE: 1) Would upload it later today for sure. 2) Well, going by the photo of the Tapas at Aero India 2019, it is crystal-clear that the vehicle has neither a belly-mounted SAR sensor, nor a chin-mounted FLIR turret, nor a roof-mounted SATCOM antenna. So, this being the case, how the hell can any prospective end-user carry out user-assisted trials of such a product? From this, we can safely conclude that the concerned ‘desi bandalbaaz’ not only has total disrespect for the laws of physics, but is also 100% clueless about what user-truials or user-assisted trials are all about. A similar FAKE NEWS was posted by him earlier when he claimed that the CABS-developed airborne maritime search radar is meant for the ICGS-operated C-295 aircraft. In reality, the radar is meant for the Do-228s of the ICGS & IN, & that’s precisely why the CABS has acquired a Do-228 airborne testbed from HAL. And for tailoring the radar for the C-295, CABS has had access to all airframe-related technical data from Indonesia, where the C-295 is now being licence-built.

To BUDDHA & MOHAN: VMT, but it was long expected, since now all indications are that even the Tejas Mk.1A will be unacceptable to HAL & this explains why HAL on one hand was exhibiting the Jaguar MAX cockpit to cater for the display of additional situational awareness data acquired from the EL/M-2052 AESA-MMR, while no similar re-engineered cockpit diplay architecture was shown by HAL for the Tejas Mk.1A, despite the EL/M-2052 being selected by the IAF for the Tejas Mk.1A.

To PRRANSHU YADAV: Thje F-125N turbofans will be ordered from Honeywell anytime after March 31 this year, when the new fiscal year kicks in.

To RAD: The CMS for the IN’s SSBNs is called SAARAANSH-1, it was co-developed by TATA Power SED & WESEE & therefore applications software compatibility for the HWT’s fire-control solution computation is also a locally-developed effort.

To KAUSTAV: Why so? I guess because of the ‘extra JOSH’ prevailing after the Pulwama suicide-bombing.

To AMIT BISWAS: You ought to first read what I had stated on February 22, 2019 at 8:36PM to DASHU. You will then discover that the contents of my comments have since been reproduced here:

https://thewire.in/security/narendra-modi-pakistan-india-pulwama-war

So, by joining the dots, you can safely conclude that it was your’s truly who supplied the inputs to the author of that Op-Ed. And here’s a more interesting Op-Ed:

https://indianexpress.com/article/opinion/columns/imran-khan-pakistan-isolation-pulwama-terror-attack-narendra-modi-5599240/

And another PoV now emerging is that when the Crown Prince of the UAE, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayedm had visited Pakistan last month, he conveyed to Pakistan his decision to invite Sushma Swaraj to be a special guest-of-honour at the on-going OIC meeting in Abu Dhabi. On top of that, he refused to issue any joint statement that made any mention of Kashmir. This terribly miffed the PA, which was then more determined than ever to create a such major terror incident inside the Kashmir Valley that would seek to provoke the average Indian citizens to target their wrath against India’s Muslim citizens, especially those Kashmiris that are residing outside J & K throughout India. This was then meant to be usedx as the excuse for forcing the OIC to cancel the invite to Sushma Swaraj. But it seems the PA was not expecting the unanimous denunciation of the Pulwama suicide-bombing by all Indian political parties & hence the PA had no other choice but to force Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi to issue a televised but heavily-edited statement 5 days later in which the Pak PM was made to ask for ‘actionable intelligence’ from India. But here too, the Pak narrative is totally flawed since ‘actionable intelligence’ means information about an event yet to take place. In the case of the Pulwama suicide-bombing, what the Pak PM should have asked for was for irrefutable forensic evidence from India linking Pakistan to this act of terror. But such words were never used since the PA knows only too well that the US had by then supplied India & all members of the UNSC with the forensic evidence showing how & from where the videographed confession of the suicide-bomber was uploaded. And that’s why even China this time was unable to overlook such clinching evidence.

And then we have such ‘RETARDED’ former Indian officials making a fool of themselves on Pakistani TV channels:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eubl9GquelI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gfL2w3yXfA

And finally, after visiting the area opposite southern Poonch on February 22, the PA’s COAS yesterday visited the area along the Working Boundary in southern Jammu’s Sialkot Sector:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rD7kdeSpq0

He must be getting jittery about the future of the Chicken’s Neck area, which I have repeatedly alluded to.

To VIKRAM GUHA: LoLz! That is another classic case of yellow journalism tinged with an utter lack of domain expertise. All that Zeus Nemurix did was conduct CFD studies & finite-element analysis & the results were then passed on to HAL & BrahMos Aerospace. In fact, if you were to go back to my thread on Aero India 2013 & 2015, it clearly showed photos of the full-scale engineered mock-ups of the launch pylon for BrahMos-A & in 2015 Nukon Aerospace showed its engineered electro-hydraulic missile ejection mechanism. The Russian proposal is totally different & involves an entire flight-test-cum-firing of BrahMos-As at a fully instrumented air-to-ground weapons test range at Akhtubinsk—which is an elaborate & extensive undertaking since there are no such long-range fully instrumented firing ranges available anywhere in India. Therefore, to me it is yet again a classic case of this ‘desi bandalbaaz’ engaging in fruitless but malicious propaganda against Russia, perhaps at the behest of those who supply him with ‘paid-for news’.

To HIMANSHU KUMAR: VEM Technologies is responsible only for industrial production of the missile=bodies. The sensors & warhead sections are meant to come from another DPSU OEM & these have not yet been fully developed.

To RAVI-N: Why use such expensive weapons for such tasks? Don;lt you reckon such taskings can easily be accomplished by far cheaper top-=attack kamikaze drones? I just fail to understand why no one in the Indian MoD has so far thought about organising a competitive ‘Drone Olympics’ in which such kamikaze killer drones developed by innovative entrepreneurs could be demonstrated.

Dear Prasun da,

Regarding this article https://thewire.in/security/narendra-modi-pakistan-india-pulwama-war, I thought your views are divergent from what has been expressed by author. You always stressed that China's air power is quiet limited in Ladakh sector, most of its mechanised force as well as its infantry are not acclimatised for Tibet sector. Hence India can afford to plan and take action towards LoC without worrying about China.

To PAWAN: The part dealing with China’s supposed military superiority was not my contribution, but was the author’s own ‘Khichdi’ that was cooked.

To KAUSTAV, NEWCOMER, DASHU, VINOD KUMAR & KATTAYIKONAN: VMT, but after conducting a few long-range recce missions, common-sense had dictated that if some significant damage was to be caused along with substantive symbolism as well, then only 2 targets were worth hitting & both inside KPK: Maansehra & Balakote. The former houses the main training grounds of the LeT, while the latter used to be the main training ground for the now-mainstreamed Harkat-ul-Ansar (HuA) & Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM). Over the past decade, the HuA & HuM training hround at Balakote was made available to the JeM for exclusive use. So what next?

Since the DG, ISPR has already tweeted saying that the IAF’s combat aircraft were ‘countered’ by those of the PAF & therefore the former had to drop their payloads in haste & flee thereby causing no casualties or damage, it only means that the PAF will not retaliate in kind. Secondly, since the IAF strike sorties were carried out through airspace over PoK (where PAF airspace surveillance is extremely poor & the sorties were conducted when no PAF AEW & CS platform was airborne in that area—which the IAF was absolutely sure of), the IAF achieved the element of surprise. Thirdly, since the target struck was inside Pakistan (and not PoK), no one will be able to claim that India never crossed the LoC. Fourthly, this IAF strike also now serves as a credible warning to China to stop all its ongoing infrastructure construction activities inside PoK. Fifthly, as has usually also been the case during previous India-Pak hostilities, the Kashmir Valley will for a weeks remain quiet & calm. Lastly, since the IAF strike was conducted inside KpK--the current Pak PM's home state--it amounts to a terrible loss of face for the Pak PM (more like 2 tight slaps across his cheeks) since he has been boastfully claiming that there is no such terrorist training infrastructure inside Pakistan (meaning if there are any, then they are inside PoK (inclusive of Gilgit-Baltistan) which are technically not part of Pakistan even as per Pakistan's own Constitution. But now that the JeM training ground inside KPK has been struck, he will be at a total loss to explain exactly how such infrastructure exists inside the very province that he hails from. So to end, not only has Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi's bluff been called, but he has also been exposed as a total bluffmaster. Now probably the first Pakistani to expose this & make some political capital out of it will be the Pak Jamaat-e-Islami's Maulana Fazlur Rehmaan--the sworn political enemy of Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi.

A Pakistani unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was on Tuesday shot down by the IA near the International Border in Kutch district of Gujarat. Debris of the UAV was seen near Nanghatad village in Abdasa taluka of Kutch, they said. On hearing a loud sound around 6am, villagers went to the spot and found the debris of the UAV. To AMIT BISWAS & EVERYONE ELSE: VMT, but the ‘desi patrakaars’ are at it yet again, spreading fake news like this:

https://theprint.in/defence/iafs-balakot-strike-lasted-21-mins-used-1000-kg-israeli-bombs-fed-with-gps-coordinates/198325/

So let us go by what can be bits & pieces of credible news inputs.

Report 1): IAF Fighter and other aircraft took off from several air bases in Western and Central Air Commands at about the same time, leaving Pakistani defence officials confused as to where they were heading.
Reality: This means the PAF had at least 1 of its AEW & CS platforms airborne & its airspace surveillance radars at Sargodha & Kamra operational for scanning its northeastern air corridors. Hence a large no of IAF aircraft had to be made airborne in order to overwhelm the PAF’s ADGES network. In addition, at least one IAF AEW & CS platform & 2 IL-78MKI tankers were airborne.

Report 2): The attack was under the operational command & control of Western Air Command.
Reality: The IAF Mirage 2000s probably took off from either Gorakhpur or Chandigarh & were refueled by IL-78MKIs over eastern Himachal Pradesh, since Pakistan has enough informants inside Avantipora to alert their Pakistan-based controllers about any IAF strike package taking off from the Srinagar area.

Report 3): The attack-run lasted for 21 minutes, with the bombs being dropped between 3.45am till 3.53am IST. A total of six bombs were dropped on Pakistan-based terrorist camps by the IAF Mirage 2000s.
Reality: The 21-minute timeframe was both for strike package ingress & egress, suggesting that the Mirage 2000s adopted low-level terrain-masking flight-profiles over mountainous terrain along a northwestern flight corridor by using Litening-2 pods for visual navigation purposes. This automatically precludes the Mirage 2000s using an underwing or underbelly fuel tanks so that a swift sneak-attack can be conducted. And six bombs can be dropped by only a single Mirage 2000, not 12. Hence, only 2 Mirage 2000s probably made ingress as the strike package—1 carrying 450kg HSLD bombs & another armed only with AAMs just in case. Plus, the images released by Pak ISPR of the bomb-damage clearly shows no deep impact craters, meaning now LGBs were used:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D0TOxK0XgAEGzDm.jpg
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D0TOxLwWkAA0RIy.jpg
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D0TOxK9XcAE_CpU.jpg

Had LGBs or any other standoff PGMs been used, the targetted area & the designated moment of impact (DMI) would have had to be kept illuminated for at least 10 minutes & that too from an altitude of 15,000 feet ASL & from a distance of 20km away from the targets. This would have denied the IAF the element of surprise.

Report 4): The PAF scrambled two fighters. But they beat a hasty retreat as soon as they realised that the Indian formation was large. Within minutes, the IAF fighters had dropped the bombs and returned.
Reality: This also suggests that only 2 IAF Mirage 2000s were used for the strikes & without AEW & CS support for battle management. Had a 12-aircraft IAF formation been involved, then the PAF would definitely have scrambled at least 4 or 6 of its MRCAs for an interception mission.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To RON: The term "non-military, pre-emptive air strikes" stands for military means being used to destroy non-military targets. What this means is that since the IAF did not target anyone or any infrastructure belonging to Pakistan’s armed forces, Pakistan will therefore find it impossible to justify a retaliatory strike against any Indian military installation due to heavy international pressure. This ios what is known as controlling the climbing of the escalatory ladder & staying below the escalation threshold.

To ASD: 1 Accurate estimates will be known only after imagery of the destroyed targets become available. 2) Not yet. 3) It will retaliate as usual by asymmetric means, i.e. facilitating the ingress of more terrorists from across the LoC & WB.

To MURTHY: China is welcome to do so & in return will invite India’s boycotting of China-made goods & services in India. Will a troubled Chinesze economy take such a risk?

Prasunda,
Among the alternative retaliatory strike actions which of these are most probable in order of their options for Pakistan. Although I expect not one but several happening:

1. Car or SUV bomb like the Pulwama, considering that the news says a lot of RDX was "imported"
2. Action like that carried out in Uri
3. Action like that carried out Pathankot
4. Action in hinterland states like Bangalore, Or Kolkata
5. Sleep-cell activation on W. Bengal, Bihar, UP or Kerala to carry out lone-shark attack
6. Hijack attempt from a low security airport like Kathmandu, Surabaya or Kuala Lumpur of an Indian Civilian Airplane.
7. Attack on a temple of importance
8. Attack on a religious festival like Holi in Varanasi or Agra
9. Placing of a bomb in an Indian plane after bribing airport tecnical staff from a losse security airport like the ISIS did to the Russian plane from the holiday resort airport in Egypt.
10. Or a single terrorist sooting a deplomat or high official in tour of a foreign country during a public meeting like they killed the Russian deplomat in Istanbul during an exhibition opening.

I ask this as the thought process of the ISI is more or less known. The order would have gone out today to plan something big and original. And the hijack for aircraft and such action has the option of deniability.

Hi Prasun,
Great work by IAF and great action by GoI.

Now looking at the news from Pakistan, it looks like IAF could not have dropped powerful bombs. And the links you forwarded from Pakistan also concur this. I am not a military guy, so do not know the extend of destruction by a LGB. And some people in Balakot say, they heard mild explosion. And also from the pictures provided by Pak defense, we cannot make out anything about the destroyed structure. The Pak defense put those pictures on twitter within 5 hrs of strike. How could Pak defense reach there so quickly? And there was no burnt structures, trees etc. So what's going on?
My second question: how Pakistan will retaliate against IAF's attack? What would be India's response? Can India withstand the pressure from UN and other powerful countries.

Only one group of people in India was so sad about this attack by IAF - they are leftist intellectuals. One Garga Chattergee PhD from Harvard immediately "thanked HAL for manufacturing Mirage 2000" whereas everyone who follow a little bit of defense know that it is directly came from Dassault and HAL just doing the maintenance.

Another journalist couples tweet in a subdued manner and talk about "a truly independent media " whereas he and his wife talk only one side of the story. Another bandalbazi ex-army man says "air strike a major escalation."

Whilw I write this, I read about heavy firing by Pak in Sialkot div.

To KANE: It is most likely none of the above. Going by the national character of a national security state & the personal attributes of a Pathan PM & Punjabi COAS, the expected retaliation will not come from either the PAF or PN, but from the PA, since the Chiefs of the PAF & PN are not even invited to the Corps Commanders meetings that regularly meet to stake stock of the country’s affairs. Hence, the only likely retaliation will be along the LoC & WB (which is where the PA’s COAS recently visited) in the form of field artillery fire-assaults & this will be especially fierce along the WB facing Jammu as part of Pakistan’s attempt to inflict as much damage as possible on the non-Muslims of Jammu, hoping that this will further alienate the residents of Jammu from those of the Kashmir Valley, thereby leading to an already deepened communal divide—all of which fits in perfectly with Pakistan’s ideological national narrative. And BTW, these are coordinates of the target struck by the IAF yesterday as seen on Google Earth:

Jabba Top: 34 27 50.69 N, 73 19 05.63 E

And here’s yesterday Press-Conference given by the ISPR’s DG:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wppc--qD1L4

And the Pak Foreign Minister’s Press-Conference:

To PIMPALE: That will be known only by those who have been allowed to visit such places top see for themselves what exists there. How can someone who is not permitted to visit such areas make such claims while sitting in Islamabad?

To BUDDHA: This is what is going on along the LoC:

And this was what took place at Balasore, Odisha, yesterday:

To VSJ: The 'desi patrakaars' were only told that the targetted structures can accommodate up to 400 personnel & so these dickheads assumed that when the target was bombed, it was running at full capacity! Actually, what was targetted for destruction were only the dormitories & not any mosque or madrassa. But the most important point to emerge is that now everytime another terror-strike sponsored from Pakistan takes place, India will no longer hold back from striking back at the sanctuaries of the terrorists through the use of offensive airpower no matter where such sanctuaries are located throughout Pakistan. That's the message that was conveyed yesterday & in the coming days more & more countries will step forward to confirm the existence of such sanctuaries inside Pakistan. Now the IAF air-strike even sets a precedent for the US to carry out such air-strikes in Peshawar or Quetta where the Afghan Taliban leadership modules are being given safe sanctuary. Hence, the dilemma facing Pakistan is unbearable, i.e. the airborne threat is not just going to come from India, but from the US & Iran as well, for as long as only terror sanctuaries are targetted for destruction. That's the BIG PICTURE everyone ought to focus on.

Meanwhile, this 'desi patrakaar' thinks he has always been posing & continues to ask helluva intelligent questions, when in fact all he has been doing & continues to do, is engage in childish & outlandish hair-splitting:

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To VARUN: Now it is up to Pakistan to climb the escalatory ladder, as I had explained earlier on what it means when one carries out a intelligence-based, non-military pre-emptive strike.

To MURTHY: Yes, the imagery will be released & in a few months it will also be available on GoogleEarth.

To MK: None of that will happen.

To RAVI_N: this BBC Urdu interview with a local resident of Balakot says a lot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9Z11KP5Pt0

The PAF scrambled its interceptors from Chaklala, Rawalpindi & yet they took 10 long minutes to reach Balakot!

And if nothing significant happened, then why did the Pak National Security Council meet yesterday & why is the National Command Authority going to meet later today?

Pak NSC Meeting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTLrRaF8nRk

Pak NCA Meeting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQnyaVg7lFQ

To PRATAP: LoLz! Looks like the band of ‘desi patrakaars’ are busy spinning their own yarns just like some of those who had done so 2 years ago when they claimed that Carl Gustav RCLs were used by the IA’s SF (Para). It all started with one RETARD from THE PRINT claiming that Spice-2000 PGMs were used. Then the same RETARD claimed that ‘wind conditions’ prevented the IAF from using such PGMs. Little does this RETARD know that Spice-1000 & Spice-2000 are both rocket-powered & are not gliding PGMs, meaning they are impervious to wind conditions. Also, every senior retired IAF official interviewed yesterday stated that terrain-masking techniques were used, meaning the Mirage 2000s could not have stayed at medium altitudes that’s reqd for launching standoff PGMs. If Spice-2000 PGMs are to be used from standoff distances 100km away, then the launch-aircraft will be reqd to cruise at an altitude of more than 30,000 feet along an east-west corridor, which will make them totally illuminated by the PAF’s airspace surveillance radars, thereby making the Mirage 2000s lose the element of surprise.Nor did the armed Mirage 2000s take off from air bases like Halwara or Adampur or Amritsar or Bhatinda or Pathankot—all of which are fairly close to the IB & the PAF’s airspace surveillance radars even from Kamra can detect IAF aircraft taking off out to a depth of 80nm inside India. They likely took off from Gorakhpur (after arriving from Gwalior) at low-level so as to evade PAF radar coverage. The IAF Mirage 2000s thus flew further north over northern J & K & then adopted a southwesterly course & then commenced their bombing runs over the hilltop-located target (Jabba Top) located at an altitude of more than 4,000 feet ASL & that’s when they were detected by the PAF’s radars.

To JOYDEEP GHOSH: 1) Sure, why not, for as long as you alone are willing to foot the bill out of sheer generosity & unparalleled love for your country. 3) There was only 1 target as stated by India’s Foreign Secretary yesterday. 4) Only Mirage 2000s. MiG-29s, upgraded or non-upgraded, cannot use Litening-2 navigation/targetting pods. 5) Use your common-sense & respect for the laws of physics to figure out what’s the truth. 6) Of course, it is elementary, isn’t it?

AMIT BISWAS said...

In case MiG 29 UPG doesn't have any targeting pods, does it have any significant A2G PGM delivery solution or it's role is restricted in A2A mode only by IAF...why IAF hasn't deployed sukhoi??
Use of Mirage 2000 implies IAF has no other aircraft that can employ terrain hugging flight profile....in absence of SAR, AESA systems on Mirages how could IAF mount such low level flights???Only litening pod is enough ??? In that case sukhoi could have been used also na???...please let us know more about the intricacies....

Is this lone wolf attack or subsequent more action is expected??

*My assessment as of now is this*...

1. In view of immense loss of face by Imran Khan, Bajwa, ISI and ISPR having threatened with severe action PAK had to take some operation. To save face.

2. Considering the ridicule and harassment faced by Pak defence minister by their normally compliant media... when he replied that "it was dark" when asked why did PAF not challenge IAF ops in Balakot.
This was too much for Pak military to swallow.

3. They attacked with military installations in J&K as targets for the PAF planes to save face but got faced with the dog-fight immediately. Having had a bit of luck that an IAF pilot landed up on PAK side as the dog-fight happening on the border region.

4. Now having had a face saving change of discussion for its public consumption in Pakistan .... Imran is quickly sailing down all offensive positions and asking for dialogue on terrorists. Result all northern airports in India are now open.

5. But Pakistan's nuclear umbrella for its jihadists have been torn to rags❗

So we all can calm down while the news channels keep hyping the so called "escalation ladder" gas balloon❗❗❗

Prasunda, would this assessment be correct as to the current situation.

What's clear from today's joint press briefing is that India is treating this as a deliberate attempt to target Indian Military Installations. This is an act of war. The ball is in Modi's court to go to war. I don't know if the political leadership has the balls. But I do hope that this golden opportunity handed down by Mahadeva is not allowed to go waste succumbing to International or Nuclear pressure.

To AMIT BISWAS: The Litening LDPs for the MiG-29UPGs have already been ordered. After that the MiG-29UPGs will be able to launch KAB-500Kr, Spice-2000, Kh-29T & KAB-1500LG-FE PGMs. The IAF Mirage 2000s DID NOT employ terrain-hugging/terrain avoidance flight profiles. Instead, terrain-masking flight profiles were used & this can be done by any MRCA whose HUD has raster-scan/display mode that enables a FLIR imagery from a LDP to be displayed on to the HUD itself. But such operating modes can be employed only for short durations of no more than 20 minutes in case of a single-pilot MRCA, since the pilot will find it highly stressful to take care of both terrain-masking flight navigation & cockpit systems management at the same time. On the other hand, on tandem-seat MRCAs, this will be a lesser problem, but stressful nevertheless.

To RAD: The Spice-1000/2000 can be employed in both the glide-mode & rocket-powered mode, depending on mission characteristics. And like the Crystal Maze/Pope Lite AGM, these PGMs all make use of a data-link pod for man-in-the-loop guidance in which the IIR imagery from the PGMs are received in the cockpit for course-correction cues. I had even uploaded photos of such data-link pods & explained it all several times before. Hence, such PGMs are not of the fire-n-forget type. The DSMAC option is available on the Spice-250 only as of now.

To ANUPAM: Why would QR-SAMs guard a terrorist dormitory? Would it not be visible from the skies above & therefore would it not be indicative of a high-value military target being protected by the PAF?

To SANAL: Cloud-cover only restricts visibility for camera-equipped overhead recce satellites, while SAR-equipped overhead recce satellites like the Polaris/Risat-2 can take photos in all weather conditions.

To PAWAN & KAUSTAV & VARUN & KAPIL: 1) What’s next? India can do 2 things now: if the OIC refuses Pakistan’s request for cancelling the invite to Sushma Swaraj, then India can refrain from carrying out a retaliatory air-strike. But if the invite to Sushma Swaraj is cancelled, then the IAF ought to be authorised to conduct an air-strike against a PA installation in the Chhamb-Sialkot sector. 2) In my view, it should be cause for great celebration in both India & Russia today that a MiG-21 Bison probably from Pathankot AFS was able to shoot down a PAF F-16. The PAF strike package apparently comprised four Mirage-Vs, four F-16s & four JF-17s & if were forced to beat a hasty retreat by a mere CAP package of two MiG-21 Bisons, then it can safely concluded that the PAF today lost both face & prestige. Let’s now see if photos of the wrecked F-16 emerge or not & also data on how it was shot down, i.e. by R-73Es or by R-77s or by GsH-23 cannon-fire.

To UNKNOWN: Don’t worry. He will be returned safe & sound like Flt Lt Nachiketa was in mid-1999. Only his G-suit/flight-vest will be retained by the PAF as a ‘trophy’.

For all things said, Pakistan has won this round of psy-war. They killed our soldiers, captured our officer, shamed us, and now international pressure to talk to Pak. And talk what, when we will give the kashmir valley to them? A weaker nation has played to its strengths and a larger nation with no vision is brought to shame.

From the way I see it, we have no option but to retaliate or otherwise it's a loss.

2) Wo'nt military retaliation for this act of war be the appropriate response on our part? After all, sustained military pressure is required to impose costs on Pakistan.

3) It seems that Pak is very efficient at hiding its casualties. Does this not help them in such hybrid war situations?

So, they are saying, retaliation, from India is certain.

To KANE & AYUSH & ABS: It is obvious now that Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi wants a climbdown, but the talks he seeks will not occur simply because of the forthcoming general elections in India, which precludes the present Govt of India from initiating new policy directives. So, at best an uneasy calm will prevail UNLESS the IAF is authorised to retaliate against the PAF’s attack on a military target in Jammu yesterday morning. In my view, this air-strike definitely constitutes an act of war since the strike was conducted against a military installation in sovereign Indian territory. Consequently, an IAF strike ought to be conducted against a Pakistani military target NOT within PoK, but within sovereign Pakistani territory, with the best bet being a target inside the Chicken’s Neck area, thereby giving India moral ascendancy.

To SAURABH: Don’t worry, for he will be delivered back to India at Wagah.

To RON: There won’t be any loss to anyone’s prestige since Pakistan will only be expected to adhere to the international conventions to which it is a signatory.

To KAUSTAV & AMIT BISWAS & SUJOY MAJUMDAR: It now appears that the PAF air-strike was a copy-cat version of the earlier IAF air-strike, i.e. 12 combat aircraft being employed, but only three of them actually dropping their ordnance in a hurry with no worthwhile effect/damage. Due credit must be given to the two MiG-21 Bisons on CAP at that time for joining the battle & it is now confirmed that one of the MiG-21 Bisons fired an R-73E SRAAM & used the SURA-m helmet-mounted display sight that enables the R-73E to achieve lock-on even at 90-degree off-boresight angles. The downed F-16 was probably an ‘A’ model with MAWS fitments. The IAF's MiG-21 Bison became probably the first MiG-21 worldwide to shoot down an F-16 in the history of air combat. History was therefore created yesterday & is therefore worthy of celebration.

To SRINIVASA NANDURI: It will be a far greater loss of face for Pakistan if Sushma Swaraj makes it to the OIC meeting, despite Pakistan threatening to boycotting this meeting if Swarak is allowed to attend. So let us wait & see what transpires.

To SATYAKI: 1) Yes, it is confirmed. 2) Yes, a proportional retaliatory air-strike is reqd. 3) No, it does not, especially in this day & age. And that’s precisely why there’s growing domestic instability & disenchantment in both Baluchistan & erstwhile FATA, as well as in PoK.

To PAWAN: VMT. That’s the nature of the beast,i.e. TRP-hungry/thirsty broadcast & electronic media outlets becoming the virtual warriors.

To ASHISH GAUTAM: Hostilities will not spread into the naval domain, rest assured. How can MiG-21 be classified as ‘old’ when it became probably the first MiG-21 worldwide to shoot down an F-16? History was therefore created yesterday & is therefore worthy of celebration. Also, the MiG-21 Bison is far far more combat-effective than the Tejas Mk.1.

To RAJESH & BUDDHA: The adversary is expecting something tonight (as per the admission of the Pak Foreign Minister) & that’s why the entire Pakistani airspace is now devoid of any commercial air-traffic until 12pm.

To PRATAP: Who represents “we are tense”. As far as I can tell, only the ‘desi broadcast TV folks’ are tense, and no one else.

To BROWN DESI: That’s because it wants to thoroughly expose Pakistan this time by first allowing it to make all kinds of outlandish claims & then only producing videographic evidence to annihilate the Pakistani narrative, which by the way have already started appearing here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xtXnS9Fw6g
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBCquFypyCw

Notice that these so-called Pak journalists are not able to find out even a single metallic object of significance in the so-called craters created by the IAF-dropped HSLD bombs, which is most unusual. And also the TV cameras are for almost 99% of the time facing only the hillside slopes & it is obvious that no one is being allowed by the PA to go right up to the very top of the hill. And that’s also why the ISPR has so far not yet honoured its promise made yesterday to ferry the journalists & Foreign Defence Attaches to Jabba Top, where the JeM dormitories, Madrassas & Mosques are located & which are clearly visible even on GoggleEarth, but not to the wretched Pak journalists!!!.

Only this report from the BBC states that the KPK state govt Health Dept has made available 60 hospital beds to cater for emergency casualties but in an unknown quarantined location, meaning there was appreciable damage caused by the IAF bombings.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWPCsulYCM0

To SATYAKI: 1) Correct. 2) There’s only 1 videoclip taken from the ground showing the F-16 emitting thick white smoke after being hit by the R-73E in its exhaust nozzle. It was shown by INDIA TODAY. 3) Lies always have a very short shelf-life, rest assured. And here’s the PC of the ISPR’s DG yesterday, which began with a prayer (guess why) from his lips:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkGeXOiGhBU

To AMIT BISWAS: Maybe no one shot it down & that’s why no one from Pakistan (PA or PAF) is taking credit for it. The MiG-21 Bison could well have gone down due to a technical malfunction. The wreckage fell into PoK because the air combat engagement took place on the very edge of the LoC & when such engagements take place in the ‘air combat bowl’, the last thing on one’s mind is the boundary of any airspace. And here’s the propaganda on the MiG-21 Bison crash:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jRUI3UzJ-M

One must NEVER FORGET that this female news anchor (one of the ISPR’s bought-over parrots) was the very same one that was harassing the mother & wife of Kulbhushan Jadhav just when they were about to enter the Islamabad Airport’s terminal building while on their way back to India.

1. PA spokeperson says that we will retaliate within 24 hours and by next morning PAF went in for a strike. This clearly shows that its the PA which rule the roost and PAF and PN have no say. I mean which self respecting air force would launch a retaliatory strike without preparing.

2. After the preemptive strike by IAF, Masood Azhar and Hafiz Saeed are nowhere to be seen. If there was no damage, then these 2 fool will be seen everywhere giving provocative speeches. The fact that they are underground and that too in their own country means that IAF strike was successful in driving fear in them.

What is your take on this.

SIR in this news

https://www.news18.com/news/world/china-deeply-concerned-over-escalation-of-tensions-between-india-and-pakistan-2050911.html

A senior Chinese diplomat expressed "deep concern" over the escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan on Wednesday, after the two countries said they shot down each other's fighter jets.

State Councillor Wang Yi, the Chinese government's top diplomat made the comments in a telephone conversation with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, China's foreign ministry said in a statement on its website on Thursday.

Qureshi telephoned Wang to inform him of the latest developments in the conflict and to express hope that China would continue to play a "constructive role" in easing tensions, the statement said.

Wang "reiterated his hope that both Pakistan and India will exercise restraint and earnestly fulfil their commitments to preventing the expansion of the situation," and said the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be respected, the statement said.

My question is that,

Is china saying that china will not remain silent spectator in case of further escalation ?

no mention of pakistani sponsored terrorism.

Is two front war a real possibility now ?

Also this news:

will china again veto this proposal in present scenerio and stand with pakistan ?

What is the possibility of Indian government loosing face now ?

In your view what was the stratagic purpose of airstrikes ?

How to find out the exact or approximate no of terrorists killed currently very confusing

were there awacs cover for the fighters to be vectored to the incoming pak ac?

would the f-16 been able shoot down mig-29 or su-30mki that were supposedly also doing CAP in the night ??
according to NDTV whose sources are suspect ,just because it says that there were su-30mki and mirage 2000 upg also in the fracas. the f-16 and others wouldnt have stood a chance against this combo. the su 30 would have definitely got them given the long range radar and missile combo??

It further says that an amraam missile got the WNGCO mig -21 . the real truth??

there seems to be no gun camera footage of the f-16 downing a bison as pak would normally try to show off . so the question whether WGCO Abi was downd by by ground fire or tech snag is still a mystery , what is the real truth? DO pak f-16 have MAWS ?Is it confirmed that wgco ABI was the chap who took down the f-16 or another buddy?

it is understood that the normal load out of a bison , is a center tank with 2 x aa-11 and 2x aa-12. why were aa-12 not used ? we understand the downing was due to the r-73 and sura HMS combo. was there a jammer like the elm -8222 on board.?

can the LCA make up for the lack acceleration performance viz a viz the f-16 in real combat given the derby BVR missile , and asraam -targo HMS combo??
i believe the amraam has become an old weapon whose signature is well know and can be foiled by the elm 8222 .correct??

After that news came from Pakistan about releasing pilot.... PC shifted at 7pm and tri service representative read some statements and answered(dodged?) Some questions.

What's really going on.

All this fiasco has resulted in making look India a nation of sissies, whose panties got into bunch the minute shit got real. Our Studio Corps was making its name as the most uncouth with peaceniks shouting at the top of their lungs, without a moment for strategic thought. There were no war time updates from any of the three services, with their chiefs no where to be seen and moron politicians kept themselves occupied with electoral gambit while army's HQ was being attacked and fighter planes shot down. The engine piece shown by Indian media as a part of F16 engine was actually from Mig's engine, confirmed by Defenseworld.net.
For India, it was time to kick its adversary's teeth, HARD. Government used/give away all the moral high ground capital acquired during Vajpayee and UPA years so cheap, its not even funny. It is time Nation really needs to ask who does it want as administrators, ill educated people lacking all moral compass and any strategic acumen or PROFESSIONALS.

Prasunda,

Is this a bigger version of the Jaguar Max system? Or more accurately from where the idea was picked originally :-

To BROWN DESI: In that case, those spinning yarns for DEFENSEWORLD.NET have ZERPO respect for the laws of physics. And that's because any internal section of any turbofan will shear off only if there's an internal explosion, i.e. the turbofan's exhaust nozzle being hit by an IIR-guided SRAAM, which is what happened when the R-73E hit the F-16's rear. No BVRAAM ever goes for a turbofan's exhaust nozzle & in fact in most BVRAAM engagements to date, only the targetted aircraft's mid-fuselage section or wings have been hit. This was the case with the MiG-21 Bison as well, with the AMRAAM hitting one of the wings due to which the MiG021 Bison went into an uncontrolled spin & landing almost on its belly instead of the nose-section hurtling down like an arrow being shot towards the ground. And nitwits like that Abhijit Iyer fella appearing on TV to claim that the engine section photo was that of the MiG-21 Bison only serve to make Indians look like the world's laughing stock.

So is it confirm that PAF shot down MiG 21?? It looks like he was sandwiched between two F 16. When Abhi was in hot pursuit why didn't other IAF aircraft's engaged PAF F 16s??

Indian Fighters have israeli elta 8222 ecm pod. Were they important in the dogfight between MiG 21 and F 16?

Like AIM 120C missed Indian Jets
