M982 Excalibur GPS-Guided Cargo Projectiles Have Arrived & Are Being Being Used For Counter-Battery Fire-Assaults

As expected, the strictly-controlled tour of Islamabad-based foreign diplomats yesterday by Pakistan’s ISPR Directorate was limited to just one town of PoK, this being Jura, south of Athmuqam. This is similar to a similar tour conducted by the ISPR for local/foreign journalists in September 2016, which was limited to only Baghsar and Mandhole, with access being denied to areas like Dudhnial, Athmuqam and Kel.
According to PoK officials, 42 shops 35 houses and vehicles were destroyed in Jura alone by Indian Army (IA) fire-assaults, while and about 95 houses either completely or partially damaged in Kundalini Shahi, Kutan Gali, Ashkot, and Salkhala. What this means is that the IA’s targets were concentrated in the Keran sector across the length of the Nellum Valley. These included targets located in the following areas:
Counter Terror Targets: Kundalini Shahi 34 33 10 N, 73 50 43 E; Jura 34 31 24 N, 73 50 18 E; Jagran 34 29 39 N, 73 50 11 E; and Shah Kote 33 57 48.85 N, 74 14 26.05 E. The counter-bombardment targets under which Pakistan Army medium-/light-artillery emplacements were targeted comprised: Kutan Gali 34 42 2.49 N, 73 54 1.11 E; Ashkot 34 28 35 N, 73 49 45 E and Salkhala 34 33 50 N, 73 53 20 E. Hence, the ISPR Directorate limiting its tour to just Jura is an obvious attempt to engage in distortions while not revealing the true picture, as can be seen in the following two videoclips:

And why so? Simply because the ISPR Directorate wanted a complete blackout on these large-scale protests that broke out in PoK yesterday:

The following slides amply demonstrate the total domination of the LoC that the IA continues to enjoy in the stretch beginning with the Leepa Valley, going throughout the Neelum Valley, and ending in the Kel Valley up north.
Enter The Excalibur
Utterly frustrated by the long gestation period for developing the precision-guided Pinaka-2 multi-barrel rocket launch system (MBRL), the Indian Army’s (IA) HQ Northern Command last July began the process of procuring an initial 1,200 Raytheon Missile Systems/Sweden-based BAE Systems Bofors-developed M982 Excalibur GPS-guided cargo projectiles, which will be used by the IA’s Hanwha Techwin/Larsen & Toubro K-9 Vajra (Thunderbolt) 155mm/52-cal tracked self-propelled howitzers and the BAE Systems/Mahindra Defence M-777 ultralightweight field howitzers.
The order for the M982 Excalibur rounds was fast-tracked under the emergency powers to the Vice-Chief of the Army Staff at IA HQ, with deliveries commencing earlier this month and all 1,200 rounds have been delivered as of now.

The standard M982 Excalibur is an extended-range guided projectile that uses a combination of a high-glide ratio lifting-body airframe and tightly coupled GPS/MEMS-based inertial measuring unit (GPS/IMU) guidance (developed by Honeywell) to achieve ranges of up to 40km from existing 155mm/39-cal howitzers, with a circular error probable (CEP) of less than 2 metres. Excalibur is fully qualified in multiple artillery systems, including the K-9 and M-777 howitzers.
The tightly coupled GPS/MEMS-based IMU increases hit-accuracy and to minimizes collateral damages to improve the fire-assault efficiency when complex terrain limits the effectiveness of conventional projectiles and makes it difficult in term of logistics and supply. A major challenge for is the IMU that has to operate at full accuracy even after the extremely harsh launch environment. Hence, the Excalibur uses Colibrys-developed (a subsidiary of France’s SAFRAN Group) accelerometers, is capable, after an initial launch characterised by a gun hard shock of about 20,000 G, to be guided by a GPS receiver and/or an IMU to the target within a precision of 2 metres. The GPS receivers of the Excalibur are optimised for using coordinates supplied by India’s NavIC/IRNSS GPS satellite constellation.
It was in April 2010 that the IA had issue an RFI to global contractors for 155mm Sensor-Fused Munitions (SFM) for 155mm howitzers. At that time, the RFI had stated that it was looking to enhance the accuracy of existing in-service ammunition, meaning it desired add-on guidance kits that could equip the 155mm rounds already stockpiled by the IA, as well as acquire new-build 155mm rounds containing SFMs.
Only two OEMs responded to this RFI, these being BAE Systems’ Israel-based subsidiary Rokar offering its Silver Bullet GPS-based round, and Israel Aerospace Industries offering its TopGun add-on precision-guidance kit. However, the procurement exercise did not proceed to the RFP stage since the DRDO had back in 2012 claimed that it could offer a fully-developed precision-guided 214mm variant of the Pinaka-1 rocket within three years.
Since the DRDO was unable to keep its promise, an internal competitive evaluation of various available 155mm precision-guided rounds was carried out by IA HQ last year in which the SMArt-155 from US-based General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GD-OTS) and Germany’s GIWS (Gesellschaft für Intelligente Wirksysteme mbH), and the Nexter Systems’ Katana projectile was also considered. The latter’s guidance is provided by a combination of a GNSS signals-receiver and an IMU. In the future, metre-scale precision will be made possible through the addition of an optional semi-active laser distance gauge. But since the IA was then according a higher priority to the procurement of precision-guided cargo projectiles (carrying cluster sub-munitions and nor anti-armour SFM) for use against hostile targets located within PoK, the M982 Excalibur was considered to be the favoured choice.
In future, however, the IA will, for its K-9 Vajra SPHs, procure about 10,000 IMU-equipped 155mm rounds containing anti-armour SFMs.
The IA on November 9 last year formally inducted the M-777 and the K-9 into service. The IA took delivery of 10 of the 100 K-9s that it had ordered in mid-2016 at a cost of Rs.43.66 billion (US$600.4 million) at the IA’s Field Artillery Training Centre at Deolali in Maharashtra, western India. The remaining 90 Vajras will be delivered by Larsen & Toubro to the IA by November 2020, with the first K-9 Regiment becoming operational last July. The IA has so far also inducted five M-777s, with another 25 units now being supplied directly to the IA along with Selex-built Laser Inertial Artillery Pointing Systems.
The remaining 120 of a total of 145 M-777s ordered in 2016 for $737 million, will be built at the BAE Systems/Mahindra Defence Assembly, Integration and Training (AIT) facility, with all deliveries being completed by mid-2021. The first of seven planned M-777 Regiments is expected to be operational by the end of this month.
It was in March 2006 that the IA had placed a $45 million contract with Tata Power SED and Larsen & Toubro for delivering 40 Pinaka MRBLs (for equipping two Regiments). Even then, the Pinaka-1’s rocket—developed by the DRDO’s Pune-based Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE)—could not achieve the specified CEP at its maximum range of 40km.
Subsequently, Israel Military Industries (IMI) was contracted for supplying trajectory correction systems (TCS) for the rockets. However, the subsequent blacklisting of IMI in 2012 left the Pinaka-1 rockets bereft of their TCS modules, which then forced the IA to limit the rocket’s maximum engagement range to 35km.
The DRDO next proposed that a Pinaka-2 rocket incorporating a precision-guidance kit could be developed within three years by the ARDE, and the Hyderabad-based Research Centre, Imarat (RCI) and the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL).
However, matters did not move as expected and the DRDO in 2016 sought MBDA’s assistance in developing a precision-guidance kit, which was subsequently subjected to two test-firings on May 30 and 31, 2018.
As of now, the specified maximum range of this rocket stands at 55km. These rockets, powered by higher-energy solid propellants, will be fired from the same launchers as those of existing the existing Pinaka-1 MBRL.
Last September, India’s Cabinet Committee on National Security (CCNS) cleared the raising of the third and fourth Pinaka-1 Regiments at a cost of Rs.3,000 crore ($441 million). Furthermore, the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) last November cleared a RFP for six additional Pinaka-1 Regiments at a cost of Rs.14,633 crore ($21.7 billion). Contract signature for the third and fourth Regiments (negotiations for which had concluded way back in January 2011) took place only last December, with each Regiment costing Rs.200 crore and including the supply of 20 launchers and eight command posts.
Series-production of the Pinaka-2 rockets is now expected to get underway by 2021.

Dear Prasun,
The export booklet released by Department of Defence Production lists the K9 Vajra T as one of the exportable products. How come this is possible as L&T doesn't own the IPR.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

ADITYA KAMBLE: Leave alone exporting it, less than 20% of the K-9's material content is being built under licence by L & T. But such 'nautankis' are nothing new for that Dept of the MoD. Since the late 1990s that Dept has been making BDL produce brochures of the Milan-2 & Konkurs ATGMs & having them distributed at various defence expos worldwide, purpotedly for the sake of exporting them. But everytime BDL was asked to take part in competitive tendering exercises abroad, it chose nor to, simply because its licence was only for producing these ATGMs for meeting India's national reqmts, & not for export. The same will be the fate of the Barak-8 MR-SAMs/LR-SAMs, rest assured.

India till date has not been able to produce Tejas M1A so any thought of AMCA is day dream only.

Why this govt with its majority not doing anything for restructuring DPSUs .
Everywhere is the news of unemployment and economic slowdown...Does govt has any way to address the issue..
One thing haunts me..inspite of creating ICBM India fails to produce successful Small arms industry which is self sufficient and export oriented.
Thanks and regards..

Sir why this order size is so low? Only 1,200 rounds, these will get consumed in 1-2 days.

hi prasun
how are we going to get the gps co ordinates to the 7 digit ,for the ex caliber rounds?

pakistan is sure to shop around for the german and french or swedish rounds to counter us .? will these countries oblige or will they have to take the permission of US.

now can i assume that given the precision every terr camp is at risk , we need not send commandos inside, we can target these bastards 40 km away with pinpoint precision.

i think the korean KFX is a better managed as they know their tech limitation , But there seems to be a hell of a lot of subsystems that are sourced form outside making the plce expansive?.

Prasun Da,

A couple of questions about the M982 Excalibur

1 In the chart Excalibur Precision Bus it states - " Precision bus capable of delivering a variety of warheads" . Why should a precision guided round like Excalibur require different types of warheads ?

2 Since IMI was blacklisted which are the other companies that can supply the Trajectory Correction System ?

Thanks,

Sujoy

Dada can't we use this excalibur projectile in our dhanush and in future in ATAGS? As dhanush is a upgraded FH77b and this projectile is qualified for ARCHER system which sports the same gun with longer barrel.

It was really refreshing to see & hear all three armed service chiefs talking at length & in-depth on hardware procurement exercises & practices.

To DASHU: Such rounds will be procured in successive tranches. One such precision-guided round is equal to 20 unguided rounds in terms of lethality-based effect. On a different note, here is a very touching anecdote:

To RAD: There are 3 already-identified ways of obtaining digital coordinates with eight decimal points: your’s truly, then a variety of mini-UAS platforms, & thirdly, human informants inside hostile territory, especially within PoK. The PA cannot buy such high-precision rounds from anyone else but China, since Pakistan has been allowed access to high-precision GPS coordinates generated by China’s Beidou GPS satellite constellation. Regarding the KF-X, there is no other option but to award sub-contracts to Western OEMs that have already have had experience in developing similar hardware for the F/A-22 & F-35. This serves to compress/reduce the product development gestation periods. The IAF’s CAS too alluded to embracing this same approach for the AMCA project on October 4.

To SUJOY MAJUMDAR: 1) of course different types of warheads are reqd. For instance, when targetting bunkers or other man-made structure, unitary high-explosive blast-fragmentation warheads are preferred. For destroying hostile artillery howitzers & their gun-crews, cargo sub-munitions (cluster bomblets) will cause greater attrition losses, while for targetting mechanised forces the usage of sensor-fuzed munitions using IR or MMW terminal sensors will be the best option. 2) No one else can. The only option therefore is to team up with MBDA & co-develop trajectory/course correction systems that can be adapted to both MBRL rockets & SS-BSMs.

And here is a very interesting report:

https://www.crowdstrike.com/resources/wp-content/brochures/reports/huge-fan-of-your-work-intelligence-report.pdf

To SUMIT SEN: In future, yes, definitely they will be fired from all types of 155mm howitzers in service with the IA.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To KAUSTAV: VMT. China is still a few decades away from producing turbofans meant for MRCAs & commercial airliners & hence its persistent efforts to buy over companies like Ukraine’s Motor Sich. . But it has already mastered the science of developing & producing much less complex turboshaft engines for helicopters. And as for Prof Dr Abdus Salam, if only the then Govt of India could have conferred upon him Indian citizenship, it would have gone a long way in increasing India’s own moral self-esteem.

To GOVIND: Had commented on that way back last February & March.

To BUDDHA: The following locations were targetted yesterday with fire-assaults:

Kundal Shahi 34 33 10 N, 73 50 43 E
Keran 34 39 20 N, 73 56 12 E
Jura 34 31 24 N, 73 50 18 E
Jagran 34 29 39 N, 73 50 11 E
Shah Kote 33 57 48.85 N, 74 14 26.05 E

Here is a typical launch-pad that was destroyed:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EGqGVdjX4AU7ufS.jpg

While 81mm mortars were used only for illumination, the actual fire-assault was conducted with medium-artillery, i.e. M-777 UFHs firing Excalibur-type smart rounds, since the IA’s COAS yesterday specifically stated that the IA had locational “coordinates”, meaning the exact GPS coordinates, & not estimations of the locations. Usage of unguided 155mm rounds would have taken a long time (more than 10 minutes) to zero in near the locations, thereby alerting the enemy & losing the element of surprise & also causing collateral civilian damage. For targetting the PA’s medium artillery & mortar firing-pits too, high accuracy is reqd as these are located on reverse mountain-slopes & are therefore well-protected from counter-Battery radars. The only option therefore is to use high-precision 155mm rounds like the Excalibur that is immune to the vagaries of the weather & wind conditions & that is also equipped with cluster bomblets (cargo rounds) which seem to have killed several PA gun-firing crewmen.

And here are 2 more speeches from the same seminar:

To VENKY: 1) In the end, the KF-X will be largely assembled MRCA since most of the airframe-related production work will be done by Lockheed Martin (for which 21 technologies & 55 sub-technologies will be used, but inside the US & not in South Korea). Hence, the South Korean precedence cannot be applied for the AMCA since, as the IAF’s CAS stated 2 days ago, the DRDO has very little knowledge on low observability/stealth techniques & materials. 2) It won’t have any impact on Russia’s helicopter export markets sibce all marketing of Ruissian helicoopters has been going on under the banner of UNITED HELICOPTERS CORP JSC. 3) In my view, HAL will find it impossible to build a 12-tonne NMRH unless it first takes the evolutionary step of developing an 8.5-tonne variant of the existing 5.5-tonne Dhruv ALH.

To ANUP: No one is forcing anyone to do any such thing. In fact, the private-sector has voluntarily joined forces with HAL. Kindly read this:

https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/hal-to-get-tejas-key-parts-from-private-players/articleshow/63526018.cms?from=mdr

To SUJOY MAJUMDAR: The following are on offer:

RAFAEL C-Dome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ3SGWdRobw
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D6lhY55UIAAmraN.jpg

Sea Ceptor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H50SvUpINEs

VL-MICA https://corpwebstorage.blob.core.windows.net/media/36546/vl-mica-vertically-launched-all-weather-air-defence-weapon-system-lt-mbda-missile-systems-limited.pdf

In my view, the logical solution is to quickly re-engineer the existing Barak-8 into a 25km-range SR-SAM. This will ensure economies of scale on the industrial front & will also ensure healthy order-books for both the RAFAEL-Kalyani JV & for state-owned Bharat Dynamics Ltd. The IDIOTIC thing to do would be to import an all-new design SR-SAM & since the latter is the more probable step now being initiated, then the preferred option should be the C-Dome. For, the reqmt is not only for the for the four Project 28 ASW corvettes, but also for the 16 SW-ASW craft, plus the NGMVs & NGCs. Here again, the C-Dome will have some degree of commonality with the Barak-8 in terms of VLS cells & fire-control systems—all of which will benefit those Indian companies that are already contracted for supplying various sub-systems for the Barak-8. Consequently, common-sense will tell anyone that importing Sea Ceptor or VL-MICA are the worst options.

To SUJOY: What has been achieved is the laboratory-level functional design of a FPA, as explained here:

FPA https://www.currentscience.ac.in/Volumes/112/07/1568.pdf

Now this design needs to be transformed into an engineered end-product with multiple applications. And that in itsekf is another challenge.

The drama enacted by the previous DG of ISPR in September 2016 will be repeated again later today by the current DG of ISPR:

https://twitter.com/OfficialDGISPR/status/1186324664500572162

The best & only way to counter such bullshit is to produce all the Pakistani Jihadis who were captured-alive inside J & K over the past 5 years in front of the international media. It is no use sharing such information with the Pakistani media, which is totally compromised & is extremely fearful, going by the confessions yesterday of several Pakistani journalists here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tmt1_Lmcj4&t=81s

Yesterday, there was one more casualty of Pakistani censorship:

https://twitter.com/cyalm/status/1185930491091914752

To BHOUTIK: Bhaya, the IN has specified a vertically-launched quick-reaction SR-SAM, whereas the QR-SAM isn't vertically-launched. Nor does the DRDO have any expertise for developing a 'desi' vertically launched mechanism. All existing vertical-launch mechanisms for missiles like Barak-8 & BrahMos-1 are imported.

To MANU: Common-sense dictates that an evolutionary approach is always the best option for developing new types of hardware. Hence, before even contemplating the development of Kaveri turbofan, the DRDO/GTRE/HAL should together complete the development of less sophisticated engines like the HTFE-25 turbofan (originally meant for the Jaguar IS) & the HTSE-1200 turboshaft engine (for all those HAL-built helicopters that are now using the Ardiden-1H/Shakti engine).

To SANDEEP: That report concerns the Tejas Mk.1A (and not the Mk.2 as reported by some idiotic desi patrakaar), which is the only LCA variant now being developed. There's no LCA Mk.2 variant now since it has been replaced on the drawing board by the heavier MWF-AF Mk.2.

I guess your updates on the Excalibur round was too well-timed or just too much of a coincidence. Sad is the fact that Pinaka MBRLs were not used, inspire of silly claims to the contrary on Social Media by Jingoes. Coincidentally, of course, you had given the reasons ahead of the strike in the same post as to why India had to go in for the Excalibur type smart rounds as well as M-777. Anyway both the IA & OFB seem to be learning & applying the right lessons, co-operating better & delivering results as events seem to prove right from the conference mentioned, to MGS Dhanush & indigenous Ammo to the current Artillery strikes by IA. The ARDE-developed HSLD bombs & cluster-bombs were reverse-engineered by the late 1990s from the Cardoen-delivered bombs.

Prasun,
1-further to your reply to Sujoy... for the navy VL anti air missiles why is barak mrad not opted for or even on offer?? ..infact why can't the IN just stick to the barak family(mrad, lrad, ER ) of air defence missiles .. we already have opted for barak Lrsam , barak 1 is currently in use(the one to be replaced) but the I guess the whole logistic of fitting totally another system will, in my understanding require a hell lot of effort , be costly & time consuming exercise. I personally feel the barak family of missiles should have been negotiated w/o even going through this stupid exercise . I do get sense that this govt has fallen on its own axe , which they have used against the congress in the name of corruption in defence deals and are now petrified to make sensible decisions for the fear of retribution. When will we get freedom from nitwits ..... https://www.iai.co.il/p/barak-mx-naval

as an rejoinder to this question .. why is the govt not taking any decision on blacklisted co's Rhienmettal, Leonardo, denel & others... sissy govt , sissy babus

2- Can you share your analysis on the following video .. the IAF chief seems to be scathing in his comments on HAL & the private players. what comes as a surprise is that he mentions that the private payers are not interested in taking up LCA work in conjunction with HAL while they are only interested in the MRFA tender.. why is that so?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAKEMp-QflE

3- It's particularly concerned by the lack of success by the MEA/ govt in shutting down noise on kashmir esp in the west. here there is now some US subcommittee which will will discuss about human rights in S Asia today (first & foremost who the f#$@ are they even to dicuss it & with wot authority) where Kashmir would come up(guess that's wot u have shared in the @A thread above). Why has the MEA not been able to put a lid on this issue. my take is they need to be a hell lot more assertive id they want t be even recognized as someone in the current world scenario.. just look a turkey(Islamist jihadis), china , the pakis(well nothing more to add naam hi kaafi hain ..) & the US themselves. After what they did to kurds .. wot right are they exercising. All these countries have a worse record on human rights.
what is worse is India is yet to take a prompt taken puntive action action Malaysia & Turkey only embodlening them (Mahathir is rubbing salt by making comments on trade war & boastng that MEA has not said anything to date) . infact it was the US which reprimanded Pakis in UN on their baised outlook to china;s treatment of uyghur's . China should also have been sent a message...

4- The following news, these now seem to be a trend which pops up @ regular intervals.. is this a planned conspiracy to force pro US trade?? American Co's are no holier .. USA has destroyed countries for business.. https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/ites/whistleblower-accuses-infosys-of-unethical-practices-to-boost-nos/articleshow/71679710.cms

To KAUSTAV: The HTFE-25 will see the light of day only during DEFEXPO & Aero India expos, & will not make it on-board any IAF combat aircraft, kindly rest assured. Have also added new slides & updated info on the IA’s recent counter-terror/counter-artillery bombardments. It looks like some of the ‘desi’ TV news channels did pick up something from this blog related to the Excalibur, like this report:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EXfUYPd7-E&t=22s

Akash-1 SAMs in J & K and Ladakh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-tMy0inZCc

And on a lighter note, an ‘Indian Guest’ in PoK:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwKarp-t9Ec
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fycr08ugRgs

To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) Why? Non-application of common-sense & logical reasoning—plain & simple. As for the blacklisting, the Govt of India is taking the politically safe path of letting the 10-year blacklisting period to expire by 2021. 2) How can any industrial player making a commitment to invest financial resources before the IAF inks a black-n-white contract for 83 Tejas Mk.1As & puts in some seed-money for financing the MWF’s developmental process? After all, no firm commitment is firm enough unless a binding contract is inked & money starts flowing in to the bank accounts. For instance, will you make an advanced downpayment on an automobile whose OEM has revealed only a conceptual design of the vehicle? 3) Here are the sub-committee hearings:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb6cU8hSwLY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9N48k6k3SY

It is hilarious to see NRIs become overnight specialists on J & K & when ti comes to human-rights issues, all they can say is that “I was told” & “I’ve heard”. No hard evidence at all. I guess it is quite stylish nowadays for such NRIs to become self-appointed guardians, jurors & judges of human-rights issues!

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To LOKI: He was referring to the 2 ground-based firing-trials of Agni-V stage-1 rocket with composite fuel-tanks.

To SUJIT: Not yet. What is now being flight-tested are modified Tejas Mk.1 LSPs fitted with the different enhancements in a staggered series of certification-related flights. Only after thesxe have been completed will they be incorporated on the first of 2 Tejas Mk.1A prototypes.

To SENTHIL KUMAR: Iran is famous for making such grandiose pronouncements. Such hardware is revealed only once in its lifetime & nonw of them get operationally inducted. The aircraft looks more like a primary trainer like the K-8.

To VIKRAM GUHA: Why can’t such a round be jointly co-developed by Raytheon & OFB?

To DASHU: Not at All. Those are internal matters of the US since that’s how their Congress works. But what is galling is the type of people like NRIs who get invited to present their testimonies in person. Here are the videos of the hearings:

The Indian Air Force on October 22, 2019 conducted a successful test firing of BRAHMOS surface-to-surface cruise missile in combat mode at 0930 hrs at the Trek Islands in Car Nicobar Islands region off India’s Eastern coast. The target was the IN's decommissioned Project 16 FFG, the Ganga. The successful launch comes a day after another successful test of the weapon in practice configuration by the IAF carried out in the same location. The twin successful launches were conducted by the IAF’s user unit in operational configuration to assess mission readiness and swift deployment of the tactical missile over long distance. In the first test conducted at around 1400 hrs on of October 21, 2019, BRAHMOS land-attack weapon in practice configuration flawlessly followed the desired flight trajectory and flew for its nearly full range of 300-km before successfully hitting the pre-set target with “bull’s eye accuracy”, top level defence officials, who witnessed the launch, confirmed. The second test was successfully carried out at 0930 hrs today during which the formidable BRAHMOS SSM in combat mode once again struck at the designated land target with perfect precision, the defence officials said. The two consecutive tests were conducted by the IAF to confirm operational preparedness and combat readiness of BRAHMOS SSM to validate the missile’s precision hit capability over long distance, the officials said. The Indian Air Force, which is inching closer to deploy the powerful BRAHMOS air-launched cruise missile (ALCM) on its Su-30MKI strike fighter platform, has already operationalised the mobile, land-based BRAHMOS Squadron since 2014.

To AMIT BISWAS: Personnel from OEMs are deployed to IAF air bases only during the warranty period. After the warranty expires, they go back. The only exception is the No.45 Sqn at Sulur, where HAL personnel are deployed despite the end of the warranty period.

To AJ: The two ladies I was referring to are Indian citizens, with one based in the US & the other in the UK. And hence the all-familiar Indian trait that both share about oversimplifying the issue-on-hand by repeating almost everything that was uttered by IAKN last month. If as one of them claims to have 'walked' through the graveyards in Kashmir Valley where the unmarked graves are, then she ought to have known the breakdown of those buried in terms of how were the dead natives of J & K and how many of them are foreigners. But such 'intellectuals' never bother to go into such finer details, and instead prefer to publicise distorted narratives just for the sake of justifying their 'perceptions/assumptions'. In my view, therefore, such folks are not only LYING OUTRIGHT, but are also staying silent about or are overlooking OBJECTIVE GROUND REALITY factoids.

And what's all this hogwash about Hinduisation? Can the lady for starters even define what is Hinduism, leave alone Hinduisation? Because I can tell you that there exists no globally recognised definition of such terms--a fact that was even admitted to by the GoI in response to an RTI query. Also, just because one reads some anecdotal mention of torture in reports from HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH & AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL does not mean that such reports are 100% accurate or that they can be substantiated with undeniable material evidence. A prime example of such mischievous anecdotal report was Amnesty Int'l's claim that post-August 5, there existed an acute shortage of medicines & medical facilities.

To VED: It was all highlighted & explained here:

https://trishul-trident.blogspot.com/2019/04/from-lca-mk1-to-mwf-af-mk2-mapping.html

To HARDIK THANKI: HAL will produce only Tejas Mk.1, Tejas Mk.1A & the MWF-AF Mk.2. The MRFA is to be built under licence by a private-sector strategic partner. As for the AMCA, just forget about it till the year 2080.

To JUST_CURIOUS: That’s nothing new. Leonardo has over the past 9 years supplied several AW-139 helicopters as well as all the sensors installed on the fence along the Durand Line. From South Korea there’s the Biho SP-AAA & the eight MCMVs from Kangnam Shipyard. Both contracts are awaiting contract signature. As for Turkey, Erdogan knows only too well that his country cannot make material advances by chossing Russia over the West.

To SENTHIL KUMAR: 1) Yes, Turkey does harbour such ambitions, but paying money to Pakistan is totally ruled out due to the FATF’s deep involvement with Pakistan. In addition, Saudi Arabia will not like to see Turkey acquiring nuclear WMDs. 2) Unlikely, because the US still wants Turkey to remain a member of NATO.

To SATYAKI: Yes. This will be the next test-firing of the Agni-5.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EHMqEwYW4AAzC9d.png

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIaQ3nOGmEI&list=PLjq9mRS1PfGA34pVJlEL7KCG_8liCe68h&index=26

The foreign industrial collaborator is France’s LOHR Group (https://lohr.fr/lohr-group/)

To AJ: The best thing to do would have been to produce all the official documents uploaded on J & K Police’s official twitter account concerning the situation of J & K post-August 5. That alone would have provided convincing answers for 95% of the questions that were asked. In my view, all the Indian panellists from India giving their testimonies gave only melodramatic narratives, thereby wasting precious time. Anyway, this is what ATS had to say later:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbwGyQ4qCGw

Meanwhile, a massive anti-climax for IAKN is now in the making inside PoK, as explained here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sLjsLuMvZk&t=36s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqZUW4r0O3s&t=93s

Hi Prasun Da,

While I don't give much credence to fan-boy analysis of weapons platforms, I did come across the following intriguing post comparing Rafale and Typhoon from stealth perspective:

Quote: "In 2009 when Rafales wiped the floor with the Typhoons during ATLC in the EAU, not only was the score terrible for the Typhoons (7:1), but when one learns the details it is worse; it was an exercise 4 vs 4, Rafales vs Typhoons and the Rafales were supposed to simulate Su-27-like fighters armed with SARH missiles, like the R-27 or the AIM-7 sparrow. That means they had to lock on the Typhoons and keep the radar lock. that means they had to give up their position by constantly emiting and had to keep flying towards the target… yet, despite the Rafale having to fight at a serious disadvantage, the Typhoons couldn't lock on them. It was even so embarrassing that the ground crews thought the Captor-M (Typhoons radar) was malfunctioning… which in the end, it did not (what's more, you can have one radar malfunctioning, but four out of four seems impossible.)
What comes out of it? The Rafale, with its "tiny" radar that anglo-saxon side loves to joke about was perfectly able to find, detect, lock and maintain lock on the Typhoons while the Typhoons, whose radar was marketed as a record holder in power output was unable to see the Rafale even when the pilot knew perfectly where they were…
Now, if the Typhoon by some magic was stealthier than the Rafale despite the latter being obviously built in a much stealthier way, there still would be some mystery about their almost total inability to fight against Rafales placed into degraded conditions" Unquote.

What I'm trying understand is if there is any truth to these performance numbers (7:1 score in favor of Rafale) in the sense that the analysis seems so one-sided. I mean Rafale is a very capable aircraft but Typhoon wont be so inferior as it was made out to be, right?

Warm Regards and a Very Happy Diwali,
Paresh

To VIKRAM GUHA: 1) Simply put, the vertical-launch technique. 2) No, because Akash-1 isn’t a quick-reaction missile & thus cannot sustain the high G-forces required for manoeuvrability.

To PRATAP: On the contrary, the images released of the wreckage clearly illustrate the crash-resistant design features of not only the airframe, but also of the passenger seats. Several sub-systems mounted on the airframe will be recoverable & serviceable, including the engine & gearbox & the EW sensors.

To SUSAN: No weapons are being exported by India to Turkey. The exportable items being talked about in that news-report are dual-use items like wiring, metallic sub-components etc etc—all of which were found to have slipped into the hands of ISIS, which sourced such materials from Turkey for making IEDs.

To NIKHIL M: Not on the Mk.1A due to space constraints. But on the MWF this is possible. In addition, the Tejas Mk.1A with CFTs will not be manoeuvrable & its thrust-to-weight ratio will become sub-optimal. It is for this reason that an inflight refuelling probe was specified for the Tejas Mk.1A.

To DASHU: ATS provides details on how the US Congressional hearings were conducted:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04EZTwUQHWg&t=2s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czEG0neC8kU

PN CNS Visits Gwadar & Ormara: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FkbLkTzXxs

To PARESH: Neither the Rafale nor the EF-2000 Typhoon is stealthy, since both have canards. However, the Rafale at that time a RBE-1 PESA-MMR while the Captor-M of the EF-2000 Typhoon was a mechanically scanning radar.

To RAD: Your question will be answered in the following thread. The SAR sensor on Chandrayaan-2 is totally different from the SAR sensor meant for scaaning for ground targets. The former does not require GMTI mode of operation, for starters. The latter requires a far more sophisticated target discrimination/recognition algorithm, which is supposed to be co-developed with the US under the DTTI scheme.

To BUDDHA: Word from Canada is that the former Chief of General Staff.Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen Mohd Aziz Khan (a Kashmiri from PoK) has been entrusted with the task of raising a new Jihadi Tanzeem inside PoK & currently fund-raising for this effort is now underway in both Canada & the US.

To VIKRAM GUHA: Nor for the sale of swarm drones, but for learning all about how such swarms work & what are their control algorithms. For commercial purposes, such algorithms have already been developed in China & South Korea.

To VENKY: MBRL rockets that are unguided do not feature control-fins on their nose sections & are therefore known as area saturation weapons. For precise strikes, control-fins are reqd in the nose-section to change the terminal-stage navigation as & when reqd—regardless of the weather/wind conditions. That's why rockets like the MBRL-launched Nasr/HATF-9 & precision-strike rounds like Excalibur have nose-mounted control-fins.

Hi prasun

Is EL 2052 radar GaA based or GaN based. And what is the no.of T/R modules in it. IAI website says it is scalable from 500 to 1500 t/r module. If it is scalable which version is destined for tejas mk 1A. Don't you think we should have picked RBE-2 aesa over 2052 as we could have streamlined the inventory between tejas mk 1A,tejas MWF and Rafale

hoods007 said...

hi prasun

in your opinion is the tejas MWF underpowered compared to the f-16 block 60( of which f-21 will be a derivative). tejas MWF is supposed to fly with GE 414 EPE which produces 64 Kn of dry thrust and 116 KN of wet thrust compared to F-110 which produces 79 KN of dry thrust and 123 KN of wet thrust in f-16 block 60. the empty weight of both aircraft at 9600 kg approx is similar. of course the maximum take of weight of f-16 at 19500 kg is more than tejas MWF (17500 kg).

so on paper the Tejas MWF appears underpowered or is there more to this? and is it possible to power the Tejas MWF with AL-31 engine like the chinese did with their J-10s and make the engine common with our su-30 fleet

To HOODS007: The AESA-MMRs from the West are all using GaN. The EL/M-2052 AESA-MMR for Tejas Mk.1A will have around 800 TRMs. Common-sense dictates that a single baseline imported AESA-MMR design be selected for various types of combat aircraft platforms, since this drastically simplifies maintenance while reducing acquisition costs. Hence, the upgraded Jaguar IS/DARIN-3, Tejas Mk.1A & Rafale should all have had customised versions of the RBE-2 AESA-MMR. This then would have given additional leverage to India for co-developing the ‘Uttam’ AESA-MMR for the MWF, AESA-based radars for anti-drone laser-based effectors, AESA-based SAR sensors for fitment to ISTR platforms (manned & unmanned) & AESA-based MMRs customised for fitment to manned & unmanned MP/MR/ASW platforms. In other words, developing just one kind of AESA-based radar for a single type of application is self-defeating & cost prohibitive & the DRDO has not been taking a bird’s eye-view on such projects that have a very high degree of convergence as far as applications go.

As for the GE-developed F414EPE, the dry-thrust levels can be tweaked as per the end-user’s reqmts & hence its usage on the MWF-AF Mk.2 platform won’t make it an underperforming turbofan. The MWF is expected to fly at least 5 sorties per day as per the IAF’s reqmts & hence the AL-31F or even the AL-41F are not able to meet the IAF’s ASQRs.

To AMIT BISWAS: LoLz! He obviously is unaware of the severe problems encountered with the shafts (and related ball-bearings) of the Kaveri’s HP-turbine/LP-turbine sections, which cause a very loud whining sound & the shafts are therefore liable to break & self-destruct after logging in more than 150 hours of operation.

On another note, here’s the latest distorted version of Ghazwa-e-Hind:

And this shows how the self-styled President of so-called AJK was insulted while delivering his self-righteous narrative on J & K:

2. Is this the same ship as the VC-11184 tracking ship ? Or is the floating range different ?

of India's GDP has to be invested in the North East. And despite the fact that NE is bleeding Indian taxpayers dry, they either don't allow people from other parts of India to enter or target them mercilessly whenever they can. Here is an example

To SATYAKI, SUMANTA NAG & OTHERS: The VC-11184 is a tracking ship, while the mobile missile-launcher can be mounted on any other vessel, like an NOPV. And as the dimensions of the missile-launcher suggest, it is meant for carrying & firing SS-BSMs like Pralay or Prahar, or even BMD interceptors. No IRBM or MRBM or ICBM or SLBM can fit into that missile-launcher.

Anything that comes out of an islamic scholar's mouth, take it with a truck load of salt. Ghazwa-e-Hind itself is a distortion created by two islamic regimes. It refers to an indoctrinated view of a final apocalyptic war in which India will be conquered by a jihadi army. All soldiers of this army are guaranteed a place in heaven. This term is freely used in jihadi circles and on the web. Not only Kashmiri groups, but Taliban and Al-Qaeda affiliates have stakes in the larger scheme of Ghazwa-e-Hind, where India is regarded as next battleground in the End of Times' battle. It is a prophecy attributed to prophet muhammad, proclaiming that a victorious army rising from the West shall establish islam in India, before the day of judgment.

This ideology is used to drive Taliban and al Qaeda affiliates into Kashmir. Hafiz Saeed, the Jamaat ud Dawa (JuD) emir said, "Ghazwa-e-Hind is inevitable, Kashmir will be freed, 1971 will be avenged and Ahmedabad Gujarat victims will get justice Inshallah."

al-Qaeda's affiliate for the Indian subcontinent, Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind takes its name from Ghazwa-e-Hind. An article in al-Qaeda’s magazine Nawa-i Afghan Jihad appealed to Indian muslims, "Indian brothers," the article reads," there is still time: rise us against this brutality, and join us in the Ghazwa-e-Hind. Everyone knows that al Lah vowed that whoever participates in the Ghazwa-e-Hind will be saved from the hellfire, and shall entire paradise.”

In the hadiths, "Ghazwa-e-Hind" is mentioned along with 'fitn' and "qurb-i-qayama.” Ghazwa-e-Hind includes Sindh and Hind. It was narrated that Thawban, the freed slave of the messenger of al Lah, said, "The messenger of al Lah said: 'There are two groups of my Ummah whom al Lah will free from the Fire: the group that invades India, and the group that will be with 'Isa bin Maryam, peace be upon him.'"
Grade: Hasan (Darussalam), Sunan an-Nasa'i 3175, In-book reference: Book 25, hadith 91, English translation: Vol. 1, Book 25, Hadith 3177.

The hadith mentions prophet, "heralded the emergence of a muslim army from the regions of ancient Khurasan" (present day Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and Central Asia) and carrying black flags will wage war against the enemies of prophet mohammad and his household and emerge victorious. They will be offered worldly goods, but would decline till a man from the prophet's family will emerge and fill the world with justice. And all muslims at that time must join with this promised messiah or al-Mahdi.

This particular hadith is read along with another saying: "A group of you will conquer India, al Lah will open for them (India) until they have come with its kings chained – al Lah having forgiven their sins. When they return back (from India), they will find Ibn Maryam (Jesus) in Syria" (https://www.al-islam.org/imam-al-mahdi-twelfth-khalifah-sahih-sunni-ahadith-toyib-olawuyi/5-black-flags-khurasan). (continued..)

Anonymous said...

(continued..) This Khorasan prophecy of the black-flag bearing islamic army is still driving Sunni radicals to terrorism (see https://time.com/3430960/obama-isis-khorasan-terrorism/). ISI had originally conceived the use of Ghazwa-e-Hind as a tool in proxy warfare, but the idea was adopted and perfected by al Qaeda and its franchises.

In July 2018, Pakistan-based jihadist group Hizbul Ahrar had called for jihad against India, describing such action as the "holiest of all battles.” In a statement released on the Telegram messaging app, the group also spoke about the spiritual rewards in islam that come with donating money for jihad against India. The group quoted two hadiths to support their argument of establishing an islamic caliphate in South Asia.

Hizb ul-Ahrar is a faction of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), formed last year after breaking away from Jamat ul-Ahrar, another faction of the Pakistan Taliban. Jamat ul-Ahrar pledged allegiance to islamic State group in 2014, but a year later said it had rejoined the Pakistani Taliban, an ally of al-Qaeda.

Those hadiths were concocted at the behest of two muslim monarchies. Interestingly, if the timeline of the appearance of the two sayings in the hadith literature is followed, the one about India predates the one about the army from Khurasan. The hadith about the Ghazwa-e-Hind was used to lure people to join the Muhammad bin Qasim-led invasion of India in 712 CE and the one about legions from Khurasan was deployed by the Abbasid general Abu Muslim Khurasani to topple the Ummayads circa 747 CE.

For a detailed report on how the hadiths are still being used to inspire jihadists against India, read: https://www.hudson.org/research/11167-prophecy-the-jihad-in-the-indian-subcontinent

why do alh keep dropping out of the sky and proving its crash worthy ability? i thought we had come to level that such incidents were over come /.

what is this joke abput India gong it alone making the amca? do people realize the money , tech skill involved ? Korea is getting all the major systems from abroad though it being a tech superior country than INdia?

tell us more about the Missile tracking ship apart from missile tracking ? Is the radar a version of the green pine ? what would be the range of these radars . why is it that there are 2 band radars ? data fusion/.

how many will we need

why suddenly the European delegation to to Kashmir when there are pound to be HR advice?

are we attempting to make GAN bases TRX modules for aesa radar ?

you mentioned that the moving target algo for astor are different and difficult , is it doable by us as i believe software is one of our forte?

To RAD: Only MRO-related technical know-how will be shared if it is a straightforward hardware procurement effort for a single project. But for several projects requiring similar hardware, joint development & customisation is always done. Jammers don’t distinguish between radar-types. Their job is to jam frequency bandwidths & all radars operate in similar bandwidths. Every ALH crash is different & hence there is no unitary/universal reason for their crash incidents. I had described the missile-tracking vessel here:

http://trishul-trident.blogspot.com/2017/07/drdo-owned-navy-operated-mris-vessels.html

The MEP delegation’s first-hand accounts of all that they are now being exposed to within the Kashmir Valley will go a long way in neutralising all the religiosity-based interest-groups throughout Europe who are now supporting Pakistan’s PoV in various European capitals. Most of these MEPs hail from the Far Right & are totally opposed to the Islamophibist views of such interest-groups that always play the victimhood card by claiming that Islam is in danger. And the trend throughout Europe is that the Rightist political parties are now fast gaining power. Hence, a time will come in future when several such countries will introduce legislation that will enable the citizenships of the victimhood-criers to be revoked & they will consequently be deported back to Pakistan for good. Hence, this a long drawn-out game of combative diplomacy that India has just begun to engage in.

To ASD: Yes, since the ‘Nautanki’ is now well underway, we can all expect that the Tejas Mk.1A will henceforth be branded as a Gen-4.0 MRCA, the MWF will be a Gen-4.25 MRCA, the AMCA Mk.1 will be a Gen-4.50 MRCA, with the AMCA Mk.2 being the Gen-5.0 MRCA. That’s how the con-game will be enacted in the coming years.

To ARPIT KANODIA: The principal problem with the baseline LCA Mk.1/Tejas design is that it was conceived as a replacement for only the MiG-21. That’s precisely why the airframe is stunted & no amount of tinkering can make it an optimal MRCA. Now, this ain’t the DRDO’s fault at all, because it was the IAF’ ASQRs that failed to specify the reqmt for a MWF at the outset, since all over the world no one in the 1990s was developing L-MRCAs as new-design combat aircraft. Instead, due to technological advances at that time itself, everyone was embracing the concept of having only two types of MRCA: the M-MRCA or MWF, & the H-MRCA. On the ither hand, baseline advanced jet trainers were morphing into combined LIFT/L-MRCA platforms. So, the LCA project was wrong in all conceptual terms & should instead have been developed as a MWF.

Coming now to the projected Gen-4.5 MWF & the Gen-5 AMCA, their generational standards will be determined by the amount of new technologies to be incorporated, like super-manoeuvrability, super-cruise, sensor-fusion & low-observability. And in each of these categories, the ADA will be 100% dependent on imported solutions & it thus remains to be seen exactly how much of this will be available from abroad in terms of export approvals.

To AMIT BISWAS: Here’s the info on the KNPP hack:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hkdILWbUjQ

As for battlefield EW, yes sucvh a capability exists with the Samyukta EW system.

To SATYAKI: In that case, then a SLBM test is in the offin6 & may well be the 3,500km-range K-4/B-05.

To SENTHIL KUMAR: Even if that were to be the case, Turkey would still require the warhead arming codes, which are not made available to Turkey.

the gan tech article was nice , has the drdo started making use of gan trx already as per dr christophers speech? and we are waiting for the more powerful 100 w module for the awacs?
has drdo made the basic model of the 360 antenna array for the desi awacs? what is the delay , is the hardware and software any different ?

the news that the desi AIP is going well on a land platform is oK , but how do they simulate the aip on 3 axis like a submarine . Is it a success or is it a another claim by drdo?
why the naval strike missile ? is it for stealth or the IIR seeker ?

I am given to understand that we are developing a smaller nirbhay to be carried on aircraft, how far have we gone ?.

after the NOTAM issue has the k-4 been tested/

Thanks Prasun Da for dispelling these fake news.

(1) That means the only two missiles that will be used by the Indian MH-60 helicopters will be Naval Strike Missile and Hellfire. Isn't it ?

(2) It's being reported that the Whatsapp messages of several people across India was hacked by software developed by the Israeli firm NSO. Whats app has very strong encryption. How did NSO become so competent to even crack Whatsapp encryption?

Thank You
