Heron-2 MALE-UAV & Its Archer-NG Clone Explained

Although Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) had been offering its Super Heron HF MALE-UAV to India since 2015 (it even brought this UAV to the Aero India 2015 and 2017 expos in Bengaluru), both the Indian Army (IA) and Indian Air Force (IAF) opted for the less capable Heron-2 MALE-UAS in January 2021, when IAI announced on 25 January that it had inked two contracts comprising one lease and one sale of its Heron-2s. The systems included four Heron-2s and their related ground-control stations purchased by the IAF and four Heron-2s and related ground-control stations leased by the IA.

The Heron-2 retains the same dimensions and general performance specifications as the earlier Heron-1, with improvements including SATCOM data-linking that allows beyond-line-of-sight command-n-control of the MALE-UAV out to a distance of 1,000km, and a widened fuselage pod for a greater number of sensors and/or more powerful mission avionics and small-diameter precision-guided munitions (SD-PGM).

It also boasts a new propulsion configuration comprising the fully certified Rotax-915iS 1,352cc turbocharged four-stroke engine, which has a time-before-overhaul (TBO) rating of 1,200 hours and which produces up to 135hp at maximum continuous power (offering a cruise speed of 277kph) while coupled to a three-bladed variable-pitch pusher propeller, compared to 115hp of the Rotax-914 engine on the older Heron-1.

The Super Heron HF, on the other hand, is powered by an Austro-330EP 177hp engine that allows the MALE-UAV to attain a service ceiling of more than 30,000 feet and reach a speed of 150 Knots. The most important update, however, and the main driver behind development of the Super Heron HF, is the adoption of a heavy-fuel (diesel) engine. Heavy-fuel engines offer a number of benefits to the user. Maintenance requirements are reduced, and the fuel offers significant commonality with many other battlefield systems. Primarily, though, it is a much safer liquid to transport in the support of field deployments.

IAI evaluated four different heavy-fuel engine types for the Super Heron HF before adopting a DieselJet FIAT engine from Italy that develops 200hp. The extra power compared to the original engine not only helps to overcome a rise in maximum takeoff weight from 1,250kg to 1,450kg, as well as improving rate of climb. At 30,000 feet and 45 hours, service ceiling and endurance are the same as for the Heron-1. The Super Heron HF has triple-redundant avionics installed, and greatly expanded flexibility for new payloads and smarter interfaces. The aircraft comes with an impressive array of sensors, including the MOSP-3000-HD optronics turret with laser rangefinder/designator and ELM-2055D SAR/GMTI radar. Antennae and pods for various electronic warfare and intelligence-gathering systems are also available.

In late September 2022, as part of its ISR capability enhancement in Arunachal Pradesh beyond the Tawang sector, the IA began deploying two of its leased Heron-2s at the IAF’s Missamari AFS, and at Leh AFS in Ladakh.

In a separate tri-services endeavour, known as ‘Project Cheetah’, about 70 existing Heron-1s belonging to the IA, IAF and Indian Navy (IN) will be jointly upgraded to Heron-2 configuration by IAI and the MoD-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and will be known as the Archer-NG.

However, this MALE-UAV variant will be powered by a 177hp Austro-330EP diesel engine and will contain flight and mission avionics that were originally developed by the DRDO’s LRDE and DARE laboratories for the ADE-developed Tapas-BH MALE-UAV.

Hello Prasun

W.r.t. EOIs of BHEL & Leonardo in previous thread.

1. The building blocks of a successful AD exists in the country - radar, C3 & EOFCS (BEL), gun, traverse & ammo (AWEIL, MIL), auto feed (L&T) and miscellaneous from MSME. Yet BHEL looking for foreign colllab. Why?
2. BHEL is looking for design, engineer, manufacture......,QC,......, maintain.....overhaul/retrofit, service, troubleshoot , for AD gun, but Leonardo SPA has already developed the gun. Then what's the Collab for? License assemble again like 76mm SRGM??
3. Who is L&T and AWEIL collaborating with for AD systems?
4. Has IA acquired Atulya FCR for AD operations?
5. Is L&T's Sudarshan a refurbished L70? It has an uncanny resemblance. I got this on Twitter from an account named "Mike Iyer": https://twitter.com/iyermkk/status/1476117856081178624?t=0QwuL6_-gOovXVkeG-_9vw&s=19?
6. There exists a OFB 30 mm naval gun with digital FCS for OPVs of IN & ICGS? What's going on with that one?
7. The RFP for AD gun didn't mention any particular cannon calibre preferences - 25/30/35. That's bizarre!!!

W.r.t. EOIs of BHEL on 155*52
7. BHEL has already displayed an armoured 155 MGS in last DefExpo co-developed with DRDO. Before it exhibited in 2018 Expo. Why is it looking for technology partner for ToT?

Thank You

Hello Prasunda,

Pranaams , please share your thoughts on eblow

1. The Heron-mk 2 specs in the IAI brochure downloaded from their website has some differences from what you have shared above.

2. Why Archer-NG and why not Tapas, where are are in the developmental cycle? any challenges still to overcome?

3. there is still some confusion surrounding the Archer- NG.
Aren't project cheetah and archer NG to separate and independent programs?
Archer -NG is the iai Heron mk 2 airframe being manufactured in India in a sort of industrial partnership with both Indian and IAI avionics and surveillance equipment?

Thanks

Dear Prasun,

First the EU and USA provided all the background for China to become the supply chain for the world. Now they are isolating, which they are finding difficult. Do you think that US will be successful in posing sanctions on China on semiconductor etc.? Isn't it bad planning by EU and USA? Please share your view.

Prasunda,

In the previous thread, you stated that LRAShM and SMART are for now only technology demonstrators.

1) Should'nt IN push for putting up the required constellation of 150 SAR equipped minisats to operationalize such systems to gain a decisive edge vis a vis Pak like entities and deterrent capability against China (given such sats are at most 500 kg, and ISRO's LVM3 can sent ~6000 kg to polar orbit, this can be done in ~13 LVM3 launches, i.e, 5-7 years) ?

2) Wo'nt SMART be fit for operationalization if IN is plugged to US/Quad surveillance assets (likely to be the case )? Also, coul'nt SMART be used to defend specific sensitive areas (lie around vizag) from enemy submarine intrusion (you have stated such a purpose earlier)

Hello Prasun

9. Is it possible for sanctioned entity 'Russia' (ROSTEC/Almaz Antey) to circumvent sanctions by procuring electrical & electronic sub-assemblies from international market through Indian proxy suppliers in order to fulfill the manufacture of rest of S-400s? Will it sanction/censure on India?

10. Are they sourcing components from PRC, since every other chip making country has imposed embargoes? https://www.indiatoday.in/world/story/russia-to-deliver-s-400-air-defence-systems-to-india-on-schedule-report-2420836-2023-08-14

To MILLARD KEYES: Yes, since at that time only emergency procurement funds were available.

To DASHU: LoLz! That’s because they have yet to figure out the contents of the DRDO’s bag of dirty tricks. Hence, the DRDO will in future state that the Tapas-BH project is to be terminated as a technology demonstration effort, but most of what has been developed will find application on the Archer-NG, thereby ensuring that all the money spent on the Rustom-2/Tapas-BH was never wasted.

To PARTHASARATHI: It is the VL-SR-SAM.

To SOUMYA RAY: 1) Though building blocks exist, BHEL does not possess the systems integration expertise & hence it has to rely on foreign OEMs that can offer customised, integrated solutions. 2) Yes, but with 50% local industrial content. 3) L & T has its own ‘sudarshan’ solution while AWEIL is offering an upgraded Bofors L-70 AAA system. However, the best option is Rheinmetall’s Millennium CIWS for naval applications & Revolver Gun Mk.3 (SkyNex) for the IAF & IA. That’s why perhaps Indian RM Rajnath Singh had told his German counterpart during the latter’s recent visit to India that Indian OEMs can undertake licenced-production of such weapons for Rheinmetall’s global orders, even if it means that Ukraine has ordered them from Germany. In fact, such 35mm cannons can even be used by tracked FICVs & WhAP 8 x 8 vehicles. 4) Yes. 5) Yes, it is. 6) That’s the CRN-91. It is unsuitable for NOPVs & AOPVs. 7) If you go through the various webinars over the past 4 years, all speakers from the IAF, IA & IN have together expressed great preference for 35mm AHEAD-type ammo that is used by the Millennium CIWS for naval applications & Revolver Gun Mk.3 (SkyNex). Even the PAF uses them. 8) Not BHEL, but AWEIL/BEML & it was also shown at the DEFEXPO-2018 & DEFEXPO-2020 expos. 9) You got it wrong: supply chain disruptions are from Europe (Germany & Belgium), not from Russia or Ukraine. The disruptions ARE DUE TO the Russia-Ukraine war since European OEMs are giving priority to deliveries meant for Ukraine. 10) The NATO member-states, EU, Japan, South Korea & Taiwan are not IDIOTS to maintain loopholes in the sanctions regime. As long as India too is depending on semiconductor imports, n Indian supplier or importer will be able to bypass the sanctions regime. 11) Yes, Russia is importing microchips from China’s SMIC.

Here is the latest BHEL EoI:

https://www.bhel.com/sites/default/files/Expression%20of%20Interest%20%28EoI%29%20for%20technology%20tie-up%20%20for%20155%20mm%20%2052%20%20Cali....pdf

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To KANE1966: 1) Of course there are differences, based on India’s customised reqmts. 2) Rustom-2/Tapas-BH’s greatest shortcoming is its inability to be controlled beyond-line-of-sight, i.e. the DRDO has been unable to develop a high-speed router/modem that can send/receive signals from the ground-control stations via SATCOM in real-time. 3) Yes, Archer-NG & Heron-2 are one & the same. But cloking it & re-branding it is the hallmark of a successful marketing effort by IAI. Also, I very much doubt the aerodynamic viability of a t-tail configuration of the Rustom-2/Tapas-BH.

To ASD: Of course. Just look at how HUAWEI is now out of the smartphone business.

To SATYAKI: 1) It already has through the IDEX & SPRINT initiatives. 2) All such weapons are still a decade away from operationalization.

To JOYDEEP GHOSH: LoLz! The flights of fancy (disinformation) regarding the procurement of Heron-TP were initiated by INDIA TODAY back in 2016 just after India became a member of the MTCR in June 2016. You seem to have swallowed this untruth lock, stock & barrel! And since yesterday the same media entity is spreading more rumours/disinformation about Nyoma ALG:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT7yiPtZHc8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74OrJzOFHzk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOTX65m_ALs

First, the Nyoma ALG will have utility ONLY during peacetime & during wartime it will be one of the first targets to be destroyed by the PLARF through rocket artillery fire-assaults. Likewise, India needs to do the same with its SS-BSMs against PLAGF field artillery concentrations & heliports facing Ladakh & Himachal Pradesh & that’s why I had stated that the IA should long ago have demonstrated its deployment of Prithvi SS-150 BSMs in Ladakh as part of her dissuasive deterrence posture, i.e. prove to the PLA that any attack on ALGs will result only in a bloody stalemate & not any decisive victory. Second, no IAF combat aircraft will be able to re-arm or refuel at such ALGs, just as no PLAAF MRCA will be able to do so in the nearest air base at Ngari/Gar Gunsa. In fact, the IAF ought to procure Pralay-type SS-BSMs to target the PLAAF air base at Shigatse as well. Consequently, ALGs at Nyoma at best serve as air-maintenance hubs in eastern Ladakh in peacetime & also as facilitators of tourism through improved air-connectivity. Lastly, 6 AMX-13 tanks were airlifted in 1962 from Chandigarh to Chushul for defending the Spanggur Gap by An-12Bs, and not from Nyoma to Chushul, as claimed by the retired IAF Group Captain.

More bullshit/bakwaas from INDIA TODAY about Tapas-BH MALE-UAV:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s7aaV4y0Os&t=75s

Even a 10th grade school-going kid can do the math & conclude that if the combined tri-service reqmt for MALE-UAVs is 76, then 4 IAF Heron-2s + 31 Skyguardians/SeaGuardians + 60 Archer-NGs more than meets the reqmts, thereby doing away with Tapas-BH! Therefore, it clearly emerges that the to-be-upgraded Heron-1s into Heron-2 configuration & their re-branding as Archer-NG is nothing else but a ploy to expand the MoD’s negatives list of military hardware imports & portray it as a successful part of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ exercise. That’s how bureaucrats derive solutions in support of political tamashaas/dramatics.

now will the LCA mk2 equal that capacity with bnet, our own ew suite , irst, similar displays etc , they seem to have modular software systems that can be individually upgraded , how do we fare on that

does drdo have a idea of mounting the uttam aesa radar on a gimbal like the gripen for better radar coverage

is drdo biting of too much by trying to make a irst that is equal to the su-30 or the skyward of selex?

1) Has India bought the anti ship version of Scalp missile for the Rafale?

2) I was watching a youtuber named Aaron Amick who was a sonarman on a US navy Los Angeles submarine, when he said that in war games between US navy SSNs and US navy carrier groups, the SSNs always won. They would 'sink' the entire carrier group multiple times.
I want to ask you : are submarines THAT deadly? Of course the result of such exercises depend on the conditions of the test, but it almost seems surface ships have no chance.

3) Are Indian navy's anti submarine assets (P8i Neptune, Mh-60 helicopters, Actas sonars) enough to defeat the pak navy's fleet of AIP equipped Chinese submarines?

4) How many Atlas Electronic ACTAS sonars has India so far ordered?

To MILLARD KEYES: It is an air-travel conundrum:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2014-12-16/a-devious-contraption-to-stop-airplane-elbow-wars

To AMIT BISWAS: 1) Nope, it is manually operated. 3) Bhuj, Naliya, Bhatinda, Jorhat etc etc are areas where the S-400 Batteries will be protected by a hieracchical air-defence network comprising Akash-NG E-SHORADS & Barak-8 MR-SAMs as well, thereby ensuring protection against subsonic cruise missiles of all types.

To RAD: Yes, HAL & IAI will join hands to series-produce the Archer-NG. 2) Yes, Tejas-AF Mk.2 will have similar capabilities. 3) It can be done for uttam AESA-MMR but on its Mk.2 vriant at a later stage. 4) That will be revealed once the prototype IRST sensor commences its flight-tests.

To AASHISH: LoLz! Any psychologist will tell you that a 90-minute speech is a no-brainer since the audience’s attention-span starts dramatically decreasing after the first 40 minutes. 1) I will not go as far out as 1,000 years. Instead, the outlook over the next 40 years will suffice for me. 2) The Pappu isn’t a heavyweight within the INC at all, since the INC now has a full-time President. 3) Events inside J & K UT yesterday point to positive outcomes, as evidenced by these 2 videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86R8lCCVHJc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3o1xxVsKjo

But this event yesterday in Manipur reveals that formidable challenges still remain:

Kuki https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2kpsfZtQc4

Hence, I will be far more interestd in assessing the speech of the PA’s COAS at KAKUL 2 days ago:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHprgjhETR8

1) The fact that it was delivered in English in front of an Urdu-speaking audience means that the intended destination of the speech was not any Pakistani citizen, but the international audience.

2) While the previous 3 COASes from Gen Kayani on had referred to the ‘enemy within’ as the principal threat to Pakistan, the present COAS seems to have moved the goalposts & reverted to projecting India as Pakistn’s main/sole enemy. This is evidenced by the ISPR referring to India on May 9 as the ‘ETERNAL ENEMY’ & the COAS now referring to India as the ‘ARCH ENEMY’. What this shows is that now there is TOTAL military supremacy over the policy-making arena in Pakistan since May 9.

3) This being the case, sound common-sense tells us that no one can make peace with one’s ‘eternal enemy’, meaning the enimity will be perpetual. And this is the ground reality since Pakistan’s foundational ‘two-nation’ national security state ideology is totally at odds with India’s ideology of an all-inclusive & secular democracy. Consequently, no political dispensation in India either at present or over the next 10 years should harbour any hopes of having any meaningful & manageable relations with Pakistan.

4) Pakistan has always faced & will always face an existential threat from Afghanistan, thanks to the undemarcated & un-delineated ‘Durand Line’, since this 2,300km-long line cannot be recognised as a legally-binding international boundary. Consequently, the Emirate of Afghanistan will strive to improve ties with India & Iran, this being the new ‘chess-game’.

5) Saudi Arabia will continue playing the role of the ocassional spoiler by proposing to set up a new petroleum refinery in Gwadar that, if it becomes operational, will prevent Pakistan from smuggling in diesel & petrol from Iran, and this in turn will result in a decrease of Iranian revenues from such illegal cross-border trade practises.

H.E. Dr. S. Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister of India met H.E. Wang Yi, State Councillor and Foreign Minister of China on 10th September in Moscow on the side-lines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting. Both Ministers had a frank and constructive discussion on the developments in the India-China border areas as well as on India-China relations and agreed as follows:

1. The two Ministers agreed that both sides should take guidance from the series of consensus of the leaders on developing India-China relations, including not allowing differences to become disputes.

2. The two Foreign Ministers agreed that the current situation in the border areas is not in the interest of either side. They agreed therefore that the border troops of both sides should continue their dialogue, quickly disengage, maintain proper distance and ease tensions.

3. The two Ministers agreed that both sides shall abide by all the existing agreements and protocol on China-India boundary affairs, maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas and avoid any action that could escalate matters.

4. The two sides also agreed to continue to have dialogue and communication through the Special Representative mechanism on the India-China boundary question. They also agreed in this context that the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China border affairs (WMCC), should also continue its meetings.

5. The Ministers agreed that as the situation eases, the two sides should expedite work to conclude new Confidence Building Measures to maintain and enhance peace and tranquillity in the border areas.

Prasun sir,

1. Some time ago, there was news of the Indian navy inducting a new electronic warfare system called the Shakti on the INS Vishakhapatnam.
But from pics online, the Kolkata and vishakhapatnam class show similar EW equipment on either side of the ships.
So I wanted to ask has the new system been installed, or is the difference something else?

2. How does the Indian navy Electronic warfare systems on its destroyers and frigates, compare with those on other navies like the Sigen MM/SMQ-765 EW system on the FREMM frigates?

3. Do the EW assets on Indian warships like the Kolkata class use AESA sensors?

4. You mentioned that India had ordered 24 ACTAS from atlas electronic but so far only 3 ships have been seen online using it (Teg, Tabar, Shivalik). And they have had them since 2021. Are there any delays to the remaining delivery?

5. The Mareech ATDS has a towed array decoy. Can this work on its own or must it be paired with the array of a towed array sonar? What I want to know is are ships not equipped with ACTAS able to deploy Mareech with it's towed decoy?

6. Have AESA seekers been deployed on brahmos missiles yet? If not when will it be deployed?

Prasunda, No matter who’s in the power, In the end desi crowd will be taken on chutiyapa ride. It has been for the last 77 years and will continue in the future as India is the only country where citizens who put country first will be driven out and who resort to jimmick will be put to power.. Conclusion: there is no Indianness in India

To RAD: Both the BFSR & BSR have the same design flaws as seen here:

The architecture of L & T’s Sudarshan AAA is the optimum solution as far as radars for low-level air-defence go:

Regarding the theft, you must be referring to this:

https://www.newindianexpress.com/states/karnataka/2023/aug/16/no-karnataka-hc-relief-in-light-combat-aircraft-tech-theft-case-2605636.html

Damage will be minimal, since source-codes can easily be re-written. As for TEDBF, there is no escape from the evolutionary path of MRCA R & D, i.e. from Tejs MK.1 to MK.1A & then to Tejas-AF Mk.2 & next to TEDBF & only then the AMCA. The TEDBF therefore ought to be developed both for the IN & IAF & the same hould apply to the AMCA Mk.2 as well. It is strange why the IN is keeping mum about its AMCA option. In any case, the development of any Gen-5 MRCA isn’t that easy & that’s why even the KAI KF-21 & the TAI’s Kaam are both devoid of the 12 critical technologies that the US had developed for the F-35 JSF.

And this is the Ku-band seeker for the Astra-2 BVRAAM:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FuiRhHRakAACz1q?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FuiRlMkaUAA8hGU?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

To KRITAVARMA: Rest assured that neithr RaGa nor Priyanka Vadra nor Sonia Gandhi will ever become PM, since all three of them know only too well that they will definitely targetted by assasins owing allegiance to both the Khalistanis & LTTE sympathisers.

To SOUMYA RAY & PARTHASARATHI: The pricing for FLVs depends on several variables, like whether it will be a double-hulled design, the kind of steel to be used for hull construction, the kind of CIWS t be installed, plus the overall vessel length & displacement. Meanwhile, photos of the Project 17A FFG Vindhyagiri launched by GRSE reveal that welding-quality inconsistency still prevails:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F3u8skUbYAAmAZG?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The uneven surface indicates that different welders are used during different shifts to weld the same hull-section.

To SHASHWAT MALIK: No one in India ever procured the S-300 fami8ly of LR-SAMs.

To HARSH: 1) The Project 15B DDGs & IAC-1 have Shakti EW suite installed, while for the rest of the IN’s warships, they will be retrofitted during their mid-life refits. 2) They compare quite well. 3) No. 4) No. The ACTAS sensors are stowed away in di8fferent configurations. 5) Maareech decoy is expendable. 6) No AESA seeker is under development for any version of BrahMos. Only SAMs like AD1/AD2 & BVRAAMs like Astra-3 will have AESA seekers.

HI prasun
where did L&T get the expertise to make a four face aesa radar, C3 etc ?! <looks like it can be elevated. pse confirm , again

it warms my heart to see aesa seekers for missiles.

dont u think that brahmos should have an aesa seeker to over come chinse ew attack when it closes in on a ship? do u think they have deployed emp pulse generator on ship as a ciws? can that work? why cant we do that as well given that the spice 250 has some thing like that as said by you.

have we started making our own GAN base aesa modules in a large scale? we seem to have a lot of requirement in the comming years due to radars for the LCA types , mk2, tedbf , amca and not to mention the awacs and su-30 replacement radar.
will us help in that?

rad said...

HI prasun

i was wondering if 3 to 4 aesa radar bases su-30 spread out can jam the aesa radar of a aesa awacs like the saab awacs or the chinese stuff.

they will have enough erp scanning agility to follow the beam of the awacs?

an air to air anti radiation missile can finish the job after it is blinded by these su-30s?

Prasunda,

VMT. Even if they never become PM, they can have their loyal puppet as PM if the INC alliance (god forbid) comes to power. They can shape policy, have access to sensitive information (bypassing procedure), etc. Does that not mean that in such a situation, the development of India's deterrent would be drastically slowed down/frozen at best, and if they can, they would denuclearize India ?
