Clearing The Mist On the IAF's Airborne EW Suites For Combat Aircraft & Helicopters

The integrated EW suite (shown below) for the Tejas Mk1 MRCA as envisaged by the DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and designed by the DRDO’s Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE).
This suite, however, remains unproven, although it has been flight-tested on an HS-748 Avro flying testbed by the DRDO’s Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) since 2007. To certify this EW suite on the Tejas Mk1 MRCA, at least 40 additional test-flights on a PV-1 flying testbed will be required, which in turn will further delay the Tejas Mk1’s operational flight certification by at least 18 months. Making matters further complicated is the sub-optimal performance of the DARE-developed RWR-118 radar warning receiver (see below)—a fact which forced the Indian Air Force (IAF) to reject it for the MiG-29UPG upgrade programme.
The IAF’s MiG-29UPGs, in fact, have the IAF’s most advanced internally-mounted integrated EW suite, which includes Elettronica of Italy’s ELT-568 AESA-based jamming system (see below), which will also go on board the yet-to-be-upgraded Su-30MKIs.
The IAF is now favouring the installation (for both the Tejas Mk1 and Tejas Mk2) of an EW suite that will include SaabTech’s radar warning receiver and laser warning receiver along with the MILDS-F missile approach warning system (MAWS) sourced from EADS/Cassidian. This package has already been selected for both the EMB-145I AEW & CS programme, as well as for the Super Su-30MKI upgrade programme.
SaabTech’s radar warning receiver, laser warning receiver and MAWS have already been selected by the IAF for its Dhruv Mk4 ALH and Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), and by the Indian Army for its Rudra helicopter-gunships.
Shown below is the DARE-designed EW suite architecture for the Super Su-30MKI, inclusive of the MAWS, RWR, LWR and CMDS installations. Interestingly, the scale-model is shown equipped with twin wingtip-mounted escort jamming pods and a belly-mounted and DARE-developed SIVA HADF pod. The IAF is expected to select the EL/L-8251 jammers for the SEAD version of the Super Su-30MKI. The DEAD-optimised Super Su-30MKI, on the other hand, will be equipped with the SIVA pod along with four Kh-31P Krypton supersonic anti-radiation missiles.
The SEAD-optimised and DEAD-optimized Super Su-30MKIs will also be equipped with EADS/Cassidian’s Ariel Mk3 towed RF-decoys.
Ukraine-origin EW Suites for the IAF’s Mil family of helicopters are shown below.
The IAF’s 40 upgraded MiG-27UPGs each have an internal EW suite comprising the Chemring-built CMDS, BEL-built ‘indifferent’ Tarang Mk2 RWR and an ELTA Systems-supplied EL/L-8222 ASPJ pod. The upgraded MiG-21 Bisons, on the other hand, have ELTA-supplied CMDS and ‘indifferent’ DARE-developed and BEL-built Tarang Mk2 RWRs, plus the external EL/L-8222 ASPJ pods.

When it comes to the IAF’s fleet of Jaguar IS/IT fleet of strike aircraft, a total of 17 Jaguar IT tandem-seat aircraft and 20 single-seat Jaguar IS—built by HAL between 2005 and 2009—have been equipped with DARIN 2-standard missions avionics (comprising 30 LRUs in all), Chemring-built CMDS, ‘indifferent’ Tarang Mk2 RWRs, and internally-mounted ELTA Systems-supplied EL/M-8022 self-protection EW suite.
For the DARIN-3 upgrade programme (which was approved in 2008), an initial 58 single-seat Jaguar IS aircraft will be subjected to a ‘deep upgrade’ by HALBIT Avionics along with HAL’s Mission & Combat System Research & Design Centre (MCSRDC), Overhaul Division, and the IAF’s Aircraft & Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) and Software Development Institute (SDI). The first prototype of the DARIN 3-standard Jaguar IS took to the skies on November 28, 2012. Each DARIN 3-standard Jaguar IS will be fitted between 2014 and 2017 with ELTA-supplied EL/M-2032 multi-mode pulse-Doppler radar, HAL-Edgewood’s OSAMC core avionics computer, Elbit Systems’ Targo HMDS, EL/M-8022 jammer, BDL-built CMDS, SaabTech’s RWRs and LWRs, EADS/Cassidian’s MILDS-F MAWS, and Raytheon-supplied munitions control unit (MCU) for making the aircraft’s weapons management system compatible with the 15 different types of munitions that have been specified by the IAF. Following this, the IAF’s seven DARIN 1-standard Jaguar IMs too will be retrofitted with DARIN 3-standard avionics.

To PIERRE ZORIN: Just wait till you read & see the contents of the new thread which I am now preparing. That will give plenty of details of comparable R & D timelines of achievements of both the ADD & DRDO, & the conclusions will be evident for all. Suffice to say that India is decades behind the rest of the world when it comes to devising optimum apex-level project management structures & objectives.

To BHASWAR: No Advanced Threat Display system & no AN/ALQ-213(V) decision support and management system system, since the RWR from SaabTech does the job. All Jaguar IS/IM come fitted with CMDS built by BDL after 1999. Why should there be any external ASPJ like EL/L-8222 when the EL/M-8022 ASPS is already on board? Honeywell’s performance enhancement figures have already been demonstrated in a flying prototype. Jaguars won’t carry ARMs. Retractable AAR probes will extend the Jaguar’s combat radius manifold. 125 re-engined Jaguars will have DARIN-3 standard mission avionics. First squadron won’t be up & running till 2017. Only 10 Jaguar IMs are operational. Have been busy for the past 2 days reading this book:

http://zeenews.india.com/news/nation/india-s-biggest-cover-up-book-on-netaji-mystery-launched_811384.html

To RON: After OP Parakram only four RTPs were acquired along with a small number of CONDOR LOROP pods for the Jaguars purely for tactical recce purposes. EL/L-8251’s full-scale model was displayed at Aero India 2013 & it is by no means as large as the SAP-14. TTSL extension is always possible as has been the case with Mirage-2000H/THs & will be the case with re-engined DARIN-3 Jaguars. Zero-lifing on the other hand is done when the complete aircraft is stripped down & re-built with new airframe structures during the deep upgrade implementation schemes, as is the case with MiG-29UPGs, which results in a doubling of the original TTSL figure. The Russian Navy’s submarine tender is expected to arrive in Vizag sometime this month.

To DEFENSE & AEROSPACE: The answer can be found in this very thread itself on October 25, 2013 at 8:04 AM.

Sir isn't "EL/M" the designation that ELTA uses for its family/line of radar systems while "EL/L" is the designation it uses for its family of ELINT & EW Systems (http://www.iai.co.il/2013/34413-37797-en/IAI.aspx). But somehow the 8022 jammer system carries the "EL/M" prefix? Even the Jaguar Darin 3 write-up on the "AirForces Monthly" magazine calls it the EL/M-8022?

ELTA has listed all of its EW/ELINT systems but there is no mention of a system with the designation of EL/M 8022 or even EL/L 8022.

On the Jaguar, where is this jammer located?

The AirFoces mag article was from the month of May this year and it still persists in claiming that towed decoys shall find their way on to the Jag D-3?

So fa have you confirmed that the PIDS+ pylon integrated system will definitely be integrated or is that one of your revelations to our sainted babus and ADA/HAL folks- who might goggle and swear as if such a system has never existed? Because so far we have not seen any specific mention of it in the articles regarding the D-3 nor any pictures of the system on the Jags...

Good to see all the discussion about the Jaguar Upgrade......but is and when is it going to happen ????.......specially the Honeywell F125IN engine.....there seems to be no progress/talk about it.......

and: 7 years of AKA as RM !! would go down as one of the sleepiest (except when it came to try and keep his image clean!!).....................even with limited resources he could have done more....

Sir, Which variant of El/m-2032 will the 125 Jaguar IS be getting? Will they be MMR or entirely strike oriented?
What will be its SAR resolutiona nd at what distance ?

Is there any possibility of Jaguar IS getting a low cost Irst like Skyguard ?

El/m-8022 is a defensive self protection jamming system. Its not powerful enough for degrading track and seducing and decoying engagement radars of Mr-sams,e-shorads and Lr-sams.In that case a powerful dedicated escort jammer is required. So,why wont Jaguars get any escort jamming pod ?

Under Darin-3 Jaguar IS will be deeply upgraded. So now, why arent they being zero-lifed with the entire airframe stripped down instead of just undergoing ttsl extension ?

What new standoff pgm in the category of Spice, aasm and tactical agm were selected for arming Darin 3?Will jag Darin 3 get ALCM like Kepd 350 or Storm shadow ?

Dassault is taking 2.4 billion usd for upgrading 51 Mirage 2000. 2 have ceashed and now the tally is 49. Such a costly upgrade and they arent even zero-lifing the mirages !?

Initially Super su30 were planned to have an TsNIRTI-developed expendable active electronic decoys. What happened to these ?

Will MiG-29UPG be getting EL/L-8251 for escort jamming purposes as you had long ago said in a thread.

In the Aero India 2013 thread you uploaded posters showing Dare dual colour Uv,ir maws for its MSWS. But the Milds maws from Cassidian is single colour with uv only. Then what were those maws that was displayed during Aero India 2013 by Dare and which one of the two will be there in the upgraded aircrafts ?

It seems Indian army was behind terrorist blasts in pakistan. Is this the reason no one in the west batted an eyelid when indian PM talked about terrorist attacking india? Is this also the reason Armericans have started taking pakistans side in Afghanistan?

@Prasunda
what is this big fuss about
Pakistan giving a re-look at the bilateral ties with the US?
I believe, the day where Pakistan gets "de-fanged" is nearing.
India should play the right cards, because with this, Pakistan's proxy war machinery would come to a halt.

Prasun da, the ISRO Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) is going to be launched today.

I hope the aliens don't have any objection to India sending a satellite to circle Mars?

joydeep ghosh said...

@Prasun da

i have few questions

you say Prahaar is a waste of money but if so why the DRDO is even bothered to sell its export version with modifications to other countries. Its a different matter that except Taiwan, Vietnam, Peru, Equador, and a couple of African nations no one needs such a system (in 2/4/6 launcher configuration)

Just read the Indian PM dreams of having Breakfast in Amritsar, Lunch in Lahore and Dinner in Kabul, is that viable

you always say 'Bars' equipped Su30 MKI what are these bars

Read sometime back that USSR had offered 2 full squadrons of Tu160s in late 1970s and 2 full squadrons of Tu22M3s in late 1990s, both of which were rejected. Is that true. I think if we had these planes no country would have dared bullied us.

That HTT40 is dead is now sure but will IAF have guts to bury IJT36.

On a diplomatic level will giving recognition to countries like Somaliland or Taiwan help India to gain firm foothold in Horn of Africa or as per Look East policy

thanks

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To BHASWAR: Not necessarily. ‘EL/M’ is also used for sensors, both airborne & shipborne. EL/M-8022 is not ASPJ, but an ASPS that’s customised for select customers. Doesn’t the article you’ve quoted mention where the ASPS is located on the Jaguars? Towed-decoys are used against MR-SAMs & LR-SAMs when the targetted aircraft is flying at medium altitudes. The Jaguar IS/DARIN-3 won’t be flying at such altitudes & will in fact fly lo-lo-lo mission flight profiles along with MiG-27UPGs. The illustration of the pylon shown above was photographed by me during DEFEXPO 2013 & so I’m pretty sure everyone concerned from HAL, IAF & ADA have seen it as well & know what it’s all about.

To RAMAN: Between the avionics upgrade & re-engining, the former is far more challenging while the latter is a simple drop-in installation requiring ZERO airframe modifications. Therefore, the former’s certification-related flight-trials are more time-consuming & typically take 2 years to be validated & another eight years to be installed. Re-engining with F-125 can be done within an operational air base itself within 2 hours per aircraft.

To RON: Jaguar’s don’t require MMR & therefore the EL/M-2032 will be optimised for precision ground strike. Therefore, it will offer GMTI, Doppler beam-sharpening & bad-weather avoidance modes whose specs are similar to those found on the Zhuk-M2Es MMRs on the MiG-29K/MiG-29UPG. IRST is ruled out for Jaguars. EL/M-8022 is more than enough for countering SHORADS & certain MR-SAMs. Integral escort jamming pods are not required since the Jaguars will be escorted by EL/L-8251-equipped Super Su-30MKIs. Jaguar airframes don’t require zero-lifing since their TTSLs are far more than those of MiGs & Sukhois. Therefore, a TTSL extension is what’s required & even during this process, several airframe sub-structures are changed. DARIN-3 is a plug-n-play system of the open-architecture type & therefore any type of PGM can be integrated with ease anytime. Expendable active RF decoys were found to be cost-ineffective when compared with corresponding figures for towed RF decoys. As of now, EL/L-8251s are not destined for MiG-29UPGs. All MAWS displayed since Aero India 2011 by DARE are EADS/Cassidian’s MILDS-F. To date, no functional two-colour MAWS sensors have been shown by DARE.

To BIPI342: Not about TSD, rest assured, since all such covert operations are characterized by plausible deniability.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To IDUBAI: You’re blindly & wrongly assuming that covert operations automatically translates into bombings. Read carefully past news-reports that appeared earlier this year which reported the death of Hafiz Mohd Saeed’s head of proximate security & one of his chauffeurs. That’s what covert operations are all about. As for bombings inside Pakistani territory, there are several tanzeems in Baluchistan, Sindh, KPK & FATA that are more than willing to offer their services for the right price, i.e. mercenaries working for Afghanistan, India, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the US, etc. And to acquire irrefutable evidence of their complicity is next to impossible.

To ABS: It’s just grand-standing by the likes of Imran Khan & PML-N for domestic consumption, just like what the PPP did for the past five years. How can a country turn its back on its biggest aid-donor? Unfortunately, Pakistan’s decision-makers are overplaying the card of providing the exit land routes for ISAF forces starting next year. What has to be noted is that US-Iran rapproachment has already begun & Iran would be more than happy to provide an alternate exit route by land originating from western Afghanistan & ending up in Chah Bahr (which India is now co-developing with Iran). This angle will become much more clearer over the next 90 days. Meanwhile, do watch this excellent interview of Salman Khurshid given to Pakistan’s DAWN news channel:

To JOYDEEP GHOSH: DRDO’s participation at ADEX-2013 was just a morale-boosting ‘phoren’ junket. Taiwan has already developed its own multi-role supersonic LRCM. Peru & Ecuador will find far more attractive offers of NLOS-BSMs coming from China, like the SY-400 system. How about substituting that dream with another one that calls for having breakfast in Srinagar, lunch at Skardu & dinner in Kabul? ‘Bars’ in Russian means snow leopard. ‘Bars’ is the official name of the RLSU-30MK PESA-MMR just like ‘Irbis-E’ is the name of the PESA-MMR on the Su-35. All Russian radars have a name & model no. Tu-160s did not exist back in the 1970s. Tu-22M3s were never offered to either India or China. Somaliland/Horn of Africa lies to the west of India & therefore does not figure under India’s Look East policy. It’s too late for India to change its One China policy, unless Taiwan stops calling itself the Republic of China (ROC).

DASHU: TTP is a loosely-knit umbrella organisation that comprises between 49 & 57 individual outfits. It was never a monolith. Hakimullah Mehsud was on the CIA’s radar ever since he orchestrated the successful hit on the CIA’s forward operating base in Khost in the previous decade by using a Jordanian double-agent, which resulted in the CIA’s biggest ever manpower losses in a single area. It was all shown very vividly in the movie ZERO DARK-THIRTY.

I know Somaliland is in the west of India. If India recognizes Somaliland as a separate copuntry and then gives all kinds of help including military and financial or may be setup a military outpost there. May be then India can play a major role in stopping piracy as well stop drug trafficking. The outpost may also help India to launch ops to rescue pirate hostages as most of the people still being held hostage by pirates are Indians.

That Peru & Equador can look for Chinese systems but surely India can dangle some carrots there

one good news, sometime back i remember you said even tyres of Su30MKI are imported just learned MRF has been selected to supply tyres for the same, pity West bengal again lost out in this, as its now closed Dunlop plant was once the supplier of tyres for all frontline jets and transport planes

Prasunda,
Due to bofor's scandal in 1990's there was a complete halt of procurement of howitzer for over 20 years & there is no sign in induction m777 or tracked & field howitzer in near future. May be it is due to budgetary constraints but once it has been projected as scam no govt. will be ready to take quick decision on howitzer procurement.

Now similar situation have emerged after vvip chopper scam. This will further delay in acquisition of several choppers in diiferent categories. In that case Hal should modify dhruv, cheetals for diverse operations.

@ Vikram. Corruption is embedded in human nature so no one is immune. In the West, in order to differentiate from the "corrupt " Asians and Africans, corruption is whitewashed under certain favours. No obvious cash changes hands but strange meetings and social outings, mutual benefits, rigged selection processes, political donations all carefully managed and staged. In Queensland Australia for example, the ruling party in the name of savings have slashed funds for dementia care services and yet made a large allocation towards arts for a certain University where the Premier's daughter happens to be a student; the premier has slashed jobs and outsourced staff at a much lower wage - and guess what the Premier's wife happens to run a number of labour hire / recruitment companies! And yet on the surface all these policies and businesses appear to be bona fide meeting stringent selection criteria.
