'Desi' X-Band Active Phased-Array PARs for Indian Air Force & Indian Navy

India’s Ministry of Defence on August 26, 2019 inked a contract worth Rs.380 crore with Chennai-based Data Patterns (India) Pvt Ltd under which the latter will supply, install and commission an initial nine X-band Precision Approach Radars (PAR) incorporating active phased-array scanning antennae at Indian Navy and Indian Air Force Air Stations.
All installation and commissioning works at the Indian Naval Air Stations is planned for completion by April 2022, and at Indian Air Force Stations by December 2022. Eventually, more than 60 such PARs are due to be ordered by the MoD.
The active phased-array PAR has been under development by Data Patterns since 2010 and it was only at the Aero India 2017 expo in Bengaluru that one caught the first glimpse of this PAR.
The offer by Data Patterns was adjudged as being superior to the one from ASTRA Microwave.
Operational since 1985, Data Patterns has to date developed more than 1,000 systems and sub-systems in-house, which include ESM sub-systems for various DRDO-developed ELINT/COMINT suites, as well as for jammers. It has also developed a multi-Bit, wide-band radar warning receiver, IFF Mk.XII transponder with Mode 5 capabilities, plus an active phased-array radar in 205MHz frequency (first of its kind in the world).
It has also developed pulse-Doppler weather radars in X and C bands, as well as an X-band Imaging Monopulse RF seeker for the projected Brahmos-NG supersonic multi-role cruise missile in cooperation by the DRDO’s with Hyderabad DRDL lab.

Hi Prasun
Wow , dil mange more!!!!
At last a tech thread , I believe the Chinese and Israelis have a vhf aesa radar much before us . What is the specific application ?
Anti stealth or weather?
I donthink it will difficult to make a uhf radar with all this experience?

How come a small private co has made these radars in a short time when these co like bel and others did nothing given the collaboration and gov funding?

Why the sudden cost doubling of the awacs? From 500 mil to 1 bill? Any SAR mode and MTI included?
Even if the i derby can be got , it can deployed in the LCA only?, are we going to risk it without maws?in battle?

Hi Prasunji

For Six ssn Submarines should India go for Akula type design or consider Barracuda type design as well. Both of the design are very capable from the looks of it.

Thanks & Regards

R u trying to say that forces wud be air dropped?? Special operations??.. Some of this scenarios I think u had covered in ur article relating to exercise gagan shakti..

Dear Prasun,

You didn't respond to my questions in the last thread. Will you please tell me how can IAF will reduce the diversity of the fighter aircrafts? Will it happen automatically with the retirement of old ones or specific steps to be taken to deal with the issue?

"The Balakot strike and the subsequent air battle on 27 February have changed a lot of dynamics as far as the IAF is concerned, sources said, as they established that weapons systems including missiles play a major role and can decide the outcome of a conflict.

There is a growing view in the government and the force that rather than focusing on pure numbers in terms of squadron strength, more thought should be given to the capability of the systems.
“In basic terms, one squadron of Rafale with its full weapon system is equal to two squadrons of the Sukhoi Su-30 MKI. Where once India would have deployed two Su-30 MKIs for a single F-16 of Pakistan, the enemy will now have to deploy two F-16s for a single Rafale,” a source said.

Giving the example of Pakistan, a second source said the IAF has the superiority in numbers over the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) in the current context. However, this only becomes an advantage when the battle is spread over the entire border.

“When it becomes limited to a particular sector, the PAF and the IAF are on equal footing, and at times, the enemy is better positioned because of the F-16s,” another source said.

1 Rafale Squadron = 2 su-30mki squadrons ? Will that be true even after they get their upgrades?
2 f-16s = 1 Rafale?

To BABU: Significance is that all of these have been developed & delivered to Indian customers.

To RAD: It is a LRTR radar for BMD applications. Data Patterns was born initially for catering to ISRO’s reqmts. It has thus come a long way since its birth in 1985. For the 40 Tejas Mk.1s, TERMA of Denmark’s pylon-based defensive EW suites are now under active consideration.

To HARDIK THANKI: The SSN version of the SSBN is the ideal solition, after the module containing the VLS cells for SLBMs are removed, since this will give the IN a SSN with 5,000-tonne displacement. One should not even dream of selecting another hull design for the SSN reqmt, since this will be totally unaffordable.

To SUJIT: Kindly share the weblink that mentions such reports on the Rafale.

To ENIGMA: The meeting went off just as expected. Here’s the analysis:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k98iiRb1lIg&t=200s

To BUDDHA: It is moving at a snail’s pace, since HAL’s workforce is now according greater priority to the certification programme for the LUH.

To ASD: How can the types of combat aircraft be reduced when the reqmts for new-generation MRCAs continues to grow?

To THEHUNDRED: That is exactly what EFFECTS-BASED OPERATIONS are all about. However, the Rafale can quickly deploy to different theatres of operations ONLY IF the Rafale fleet is supported by MRTT-type transports. Similarly, both the IN & IA now need to gear-up pretty fast for conducting offensive riverine operations.

Sujit said...

Holy ninjas!. So it's true that terma pylon based ew suite is indeed under consideration.. But Which one Prasun sir, the jammer one or without jammer?&why only the 40mk1s?.. Why not the rest 83mk1A?.. If terma is selected then I think we should go for at least 80 more.. It will boost the squadron strength..
And regarding rafale.. It's no weblink..its one of my relative who is Close to some in MOD..

Hi Prasun
Can the x band Par radar be used as a surveillance radar as well as it software configurable.?

Can you post a pic of the 205 MHz aesa bmd radar

The terma maws. Is self contained ? Will there be attachment modification on the wing? Expensive?

Raghu said...

Dear Prasun,

Even given the fact that the SSN has to economical to purchase and operate, would not an SSN derived from the Arihant SSBN design be slightly dated in terms of quieting technology, sonars etc. considering that it has to operate for 15-20 years facing off against what is likely to be latest generation Chinese nuclear subs, both SSNs and SSBNs? The Arihant itself does not represent the latest or the best in design/technology, I presume, since the original design itself dates back quite a few years.

Wrt to maws pod etc, kindly please help me understand how much coverage will the 4 pods provide if they are placed on pylons and face same direction? I thought they need to cover different directions in distributed fashion?

Seems like terma offers the best solution, 2 single maws pods, 1 jammer maws combo pod and 1 maws flare dispenser combo pod can be added to Tejas mk1 and mk1A.

Thanks in advance.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To SUJIT: Of course it will come along with a built-in active jammer, most probably the ELT-568 from Elettronica. And that’s because the EL/L-8222 ASPJ pod isn’t qualified for the Tejas Mk.1. Since the Tejas Mk.1A is projected to have the EL/L-8222 pod, the TERMA pylons for the Mk.1A will contain MAWS sensors only. As for the Rafale, there indeed is a weblink whose speculative contents are almost identical to the ones in your earlier comment:

https://idrw.org/with-dassault-aviation-shifting-focus-to-fcas-rumors-of-shifting-rafale-production-to-india/

Such delusional stories are FAKE NEWS & need to be treated like this:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EC17hPOUYAA2lAM.jpg

To RAD: Yes, it can be used like the THALES GS-100 low-level air-defence radar as well, or even as an anti-drone radar if mounted on a rotating, gimbal-stabilised pedestal. I had posted the image of the 205MHz radar back in 2013 during the Aero India expo. Here it is again:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2F14gdfweu8/URPGB_7oPqI/AAAAAAAADy4/q3chY1i2MJw/s1600/DSC01362.JPG

As for pylon-mounted EW sensors/suites, it is Denmark & Saab that are the market-leaders, since Saab in particular has always place heavy emphasis on conformal multi-purpose fitments for LCA-type MRCAs. Here are a few examples:

https://www.terma.com/media/105019/4868_pbl_pylon_screen.pdf

https://saab.com/globalassets/commercial/air/electronic-warfare/self-protection-systems/arexis/saab-arexis-4-page.pdf

https://saab.com/globalassets/commercial/air/electronic-warfare/counter-measure-dispenser-systems/bol-advanced-countermeasure-dispenser/bol-pdf/bol-product-folder.pdf

It therefore beats me why the hell can’t DARE develop such multi-purpose pylon attachments that can be used by all IAF combat aircraft, thereby doing away with the need for separate ASPJ pods. The D-29 EW suite developed by DARE can easily be accommodated within such pylon-based interface fitments.

To RAGHU: Not necessarily. As new-generation sub-systems become available, they all can be installed on the hull.

To ANUP: It’s FAKE NEWS. It will be the Spice-1000 PGMs that will be delivered from next month.

To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) The proposed 23mm gun-pod is meant for the centre-pylon, whereas the MAWS fitments encased within pylons will all be underwing. 2) C-295s will not be acquired as MPAs. Only P-8Is will serve as airborne MR/ASW platforms along with the Sea Guardian UAS in future. 3) They need to be privatised.

To VSJ: 1) Yes, it is all true. 2) All pylon-mounted MAWS sensors provide 360-degree hemispheric early-warning.

To ASD: My personnel preference would have been to use no less than 12 450 HSLD bombs in order to flatten the entire hilltop.

To BHOUTIK: Remarkable story of how the UAE Air Force procured & equipped Bombardier 6000A SIGINT/COMINT platforms with Israeli expertise:

https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/.premium-israel-businessman-uae-spy-planes-iran-saudi-arabia-1.7696711?platform=hootsuite

The two aircraft involved were delivered with Isle of Man registrations, and were registered to a Swiss-based company, AGT (Asia Global Technology) Int’l, which was previously responsible for the UAE’s Falcon Eye surveillance system and the Abu Dhabi safe city project. The two aircraft were reportedly delivered to maintenance, repair and overhaul company Marshall Aerospace’s facility at Teversham, UK, where it is understood that work was carried out on them by Marshall and Spec Ops Technolog–a US, Netherlands and UAE-based company that specialises in airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) platforms. The first aircraft, carrying the UAE serial 1326, emerged from Marshall Aerospace’s hangars on April 27, 2017. It superficially resembled a Raytheon Sentinel, albeit without that type’s prominent dorsal SATCOM hump, and with a host of minor differences. The large ventral canoe fairing was very similar in shape and size, however, extending back from just behind the nose gear bay to the centre of the wingbox, leading some analysts to question whether it might be based on the flight-cleared shape and structure of the Sentinel canoe. The fairing did not seem to have a large dielectric section, so appears unlikely to accommodate a surveillance radar, and would seem most likely to contain ‘spinners’ (tuning heads) for ELINT equipment. It may also have an electro optical/long-range oblique photographic (EO/LOROP) sensor. A large antenna farm behind the wing, with about a dozen feelers, would seem likely to serve COMINT equipment, while there appears to be a number of antennas for missile and/or radar warning receivers. Two ventral fins are fitted for stability, but these look smaller than those fitted to the Sentinel. On top of the fuselage are an array of SATCOM antennas and a number of unidentified blade aerials. Extra cooling is provided by an additional non-standard intake on the port side of the rear fuselage, next to the engine. The first aircraft carried out some rejected take-offs, taxi trials and high-power runs on June 4 before making a four-hour test flight on June 21. The aircraft made a second test flight on July 7, 2017.

"According to sources privy to the negotiations, HAL quoted Rs 450 crore per aircraft as the basic price. “MoD and IAF (customers) are firm that this price is not competitive and are negotiating for a price that is less than Rs 300 crore per aircraft. Negotiations are nearly complete and final price is likely to be in the range of Rs 250 crore and Rs 275 crore,” a source said.
If the price is Rs 275 crore, then the value of 83 LCAs would be about Rs 22,825 crore compared to Rs 37,350 crore if it was Rs 450 crore"

Is this fake news about price decrease per plane Prasun?
Does the lca MK1 and MK1a truly only have total airframe life of only 1000 hrs as i remembered you had once mentioned?

If that is the case why are we paying even more than before? Is the payment being done for weapon platforms or technology for SSNs in the garb of civilian power reactors

Thank you for your patience in answering these questions.

I have a few of my own:

1) Are the pylon mounted MAWS actively being sought for the Tejas Mk1A?

2) How likely is the acquisition of an additional 44 Rafales or perhaps just another 36?

3) This story seems to indicate only 21 MiG-29s and 12 Su-30s will be acquired
https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/iaf-plans-to-buy-33-mig-29-sukhoi-30-fighter-jets/articleshow/70894263.cms
Is this all that is being sought? Does not seem a lot.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To THEHUNDRED: The acquisition costs of Tejas Mk.1 & Mk.1A are high because HAL has been unable to achieve the degree of automation that is reqd for producing 4th-gen MRCAs. Total airframe life still remains restricted to 1,000 flight-hours.

To SIDHARTH: That was released two years ago. Here’s another one.

To LOKI & SUJIT: That is an image of a generic SSBN model shown at the IFR-2016 event at Vizag. Here is the definitive design of the S-5 SSBN as revealed by the DRDO:

http://trishul-trident.blogspot.com/2012/06/games-being-played-along-indias-eastern.html

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-osvhByPGUIY/T8vtZ4OH2SI/AAAAAAAABWo/lCIQg9Q0t3M/s1600/S-5-1.jpg

I had uploaded it way back in 2012 & it shows the SSBN capable of carrying only 12 SLBMs. Only those SSBNs that can fit their SSBNs within their pressure-hulls can be humpless. Neither China’s nor India’s SLBMs are so advanced so as to be of compact design.

To PAVAN: of course wind-generated power is far less capital-intensive to produce than nuclear energy. In addition, the NPCIL will take a fair bit of time to master light water reactors technologies & operations, since that is the biggest challenge.

To GLAGINYA: There is no massing of troops along the LoC by Pakistan. Only rear-areas are being reinforced. The various Corps strike formations at Mangla (which are J & K-centric) are still at their peacetime stations, as evidenced by this video released yesterday:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbP32xObssc

Nor is there going to be any seaborne intrusion from Pakistan, as is being speculated by the ‘desi’ media-houses & TV channels. The intrusions will be riverine in nature that can be neutralised only if the IA forms specialist riverine interception units equipped with armoured rapid intervention craft like this:

Hi Prasun,

This NRC business done by GOI was haphazard and painful to watch.

Whatever they are, they are now living in India, do we have to widen the schisms that exist in our society. Why can't GOI be more compassionate and accommodative. People committing suicides, is this what we have come to.

Really sad and ashamed at this human tragedy unfolding in Northeast.

Dear Prasun da,
Abhijit Mitra is bluffing left, right and center in his latest video. But he did raise few interesting points which you have already highlighted r(MoD's procurement process).

My only question is whether or not sukhoi 30mki used by India is a true multirole aircraft or just a glorified air superiority fighter, whose only claim to fame is the WW2 era dog fight capability, when all western airforces are switching towards network centric warfare with BVR doctrine?

I mean is the platform going to become true multirole combat aircraft only after the super sukhoi upgrade?

Sir, the NRC exercise has turned out to be a joke after only 1.9 million were detected when the real number of illegals Bangladeshis is much higher. This makes it clear that the illegals have managed to manipulate the system by forged documents and bribes. Many Assam districts have already become Muslim majority. Owaisi and that Badruddin like Islamists would be rejoicing today. Looks like we have lost the last chance to save Assam's identity. I fear that some years from now we will be facing a Kashmir type jihadist insurgency in Assam if nothing is done by the GoI.

To SBM: 1) Yes, the global RFP for this reqmt is now being drafted, as is another RFP for a pod-mounted cannon, most probably 20mm-type. 2) The decision was made 2 years ago for additional 44 Rafales. 3) All those figures will change again, rest assured.

To VENKY & HOODS007: Not at all. NAL cannot accurately estimate the airframe life because all the composites materials used on the Tejas airframe are imported & hence NAL does not have any info on the structural integrity of the composites-built airframe structures. Hence, the airframe life will be determined in an accurate manner only after the Tejas Mk.1s delivered to the IAF have demonstrated the fatigue-free limits of the airframe. In my estimation, therefore, the definitive airframe life will be about 5,500 hours after all the data-points have been received by late 2020.

To RAT: Since when have Su-30MKIs have been participating in the Shaheen series of exercises? Su-30MKI serves only with the IAF, & not the PAF or PLAAF.

To SANDEEP GUPTA: Woh saalaa chootiya doosre chootiyon ko chootiya bana rahay hain.

To JOYDEEP GHOSH: 1) Was the barrel of the T-90S built by HVF or was it imported from Russia? 2) Of course it is very difficult effort & a very big deal to develop such compact SLBMs, after considering the fact that the HAL Kanpur-built Do-228 received its DGCA’s certificate of airworthiness only in late 2017 & only now did this certification receive endorsement from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Since the Do-228 began being licence-built by HAL in 1986, it means that HAL took 33 years to attain the same industrial standards/qualitative proficiency as its European counterparts!!!

To UJJWAL: It is a flawed conclusion, kindly rest assured.

To VISHNU: Are you referring to this interview:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2S74FMZdyyk

To PAVAN: Woh saalaa chootiya doosre chootiyon ko chootiya bana rahay hain.

To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) The US & EU will make sure that no one else except an OEM hailing from the US or EU ends up owning this Ukrainian company. 2) Russia is extremely pissed with China for Chinese belligerence being displayedagainst both India & Vietnam & hence India will accord greatest priority to the realisation of the Eurasian Customs Union while dumping the BRI for good. Hence Beijing is since panicked & is offering India an early harvest WRT the definition of the LAC. 3) That has been in place since 2011 itself. 4) Prices have not yet been reduced & negotiations are still on. Prices can come down only if the level of industrial automation goes up. 5) MoD is trying to do with OFB just what the Civil Aviation Ministry had done with AI & IA decades before, i.e. deliberately make it unprofitable so that private-sector by default can replace it.

To SRINIVASA NANDURI & PRATAP: Didn’t I say so a long time ago? Now the GoI itself is saying that it has no authoritative figures on the quantum of illegal immigrants inside India. And all those IDIOTS (like L k Advani & Arun Shourie) who had for the past 3 decades been making all kinds of tall claims about illegal immigration into India are not, strangely, ultra-quiet.

To PRATAP: It is WRONG to state that “This makes it clear that the illegals have managed to manipulate the system by forged documents and bribes.” Unlike documentation, a human being’s behavioural pattern & cultural attributes can’t be changed overnight. Hence, any illegal living amidst any settled population will always be singled out with ease. The migration patterns also prove that Bengali Muslims—be it from West Bengal or Meghalaya or Tripura—have over the decades migrated to Assam in search of employment & have since settled there. Hence, it is all about coming to terms with the truth, rather than delving into conspiracy theories.

To PRAJJWAL DALAL: leave them alone, for there are enough inside the country that are spreading FAKE NEWS & helping distribute the adversary’s narrative. Here are a few examples:

https://twitter.com/RanaAyyub/status/1167295082908700674

This lady has even published a book dealing with the 2002 Gujarat riots & she till this day has not produced even a shred of evidence that can be considered as admissible in any court of law!

And then we have this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wnc1sXq_JU&t=33s

Neither of these 2 Indian nitwits (the programme anchor & an ex-diplomat) are able to explain that the UN Charter on self-determination deals only with ‘occupied territories’ & hence does not apply to J & K, which is a sovereign part of India. Nor are these ‘desi’ nitwits able to explain in layman’s terms how & why J & K is an integral part of India & why Pakistan’s claim of J & K being disputed/occupied territory has no global takers & why the whole world except Pakistan accepts the legality of the Instrument of Accession (which was clearly reiterated in the 1949 Karachi Agreement).

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To SUJIT: VMT. I have been meeting them since the late 1980s, still do so & will continue to do so as part of professional activities. As for gun-pods, there are no lightweight new-generation 23mm systems available & hence, logically, the next best option is for the 20mm solution, that will ensure commonality of both barrel & ammo with those cannons used by the Rudra gunships, the LCH & the Mirage-2000s & Rafales. And since all Mig-21s will be decommissioned by the IAF by 2022, usage of 23mm cannons will come to a stop, while usage of 20mm cannons will increase. It is therefore elementary economics (and not rocket science) that decides which type of pod-mounted cannon is to be selected.

To DOWN SOUTH: That’s because in the US, the OEMs there make significant use of industrial robotics for the construction of fuselage sub-sections, whereas in Russia this is still something new & not yet fully applied.

To VINOD J: Not just Malaysia, but even Singapore’s SEAGATE, for instance. An entire eco-system is possible only when adequate incentives are accorded for producing a whole range of consumer electronic items in-country, like PC mother-boards, core processors etc etc. Right now, even all such components are being imported from Southeast Asia. For instance, the Routers for RelianceJIO used to be imported from Shenzhen, but after receiving several complaints about baked & inflated batteries, Routers of a different design are now being imported from Vietnam.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To KAUSTAV, SUJOY MAJUMDAR & AMIT BISWAS: VMT, but this best sums it all up:

https://theprint.in/opinion/with-assam-nrc-the-truth-is-also-out-it-was-a-pointless-exercise-all-along/284929/

This exercise, at best, serves as a classic illustration of the perils of mis-governance, i.e. if the Assam Accords had mandated a second NRC back in 1985, then the entire exercise should have been completed by 1990 itself, instead of dragging it till 2016—all due to vote-bank politicking. Also, migration rules dictate that those foreigners seeking citizenship always move deeper into hinterlands while only those who are seasonal migrants tend to stay in bordering areas. For instance, almost all non-Muslim Bangladeshis who had to migrate to India between 1993 & 1996 after the Babri Masjid demolition decided then to settle down in Delhi, where in that period the local state administration was formed by the BJP. And as for the leaders of AASU, back in 1985, they never distinguished between Muslim & non-Muslim immigrants. For them, even today, whosoever migrated to Assam after March 24, 1971 remains a foreigner. So, at the end of the day, the Assam-based BJP ‘netas’ are nothing but: Saalaa chootiya doosre chootiyon ko aur bhi chootiya bana rahay hain.

To ENIGMA: It is a typically moronic observation by a certified MORON. Of the 4 countries most likely to be negatively affected by the Afghan Taliban (Russia, Uzbekistan, China & India), only Russia & India have the reqd capacity for stepping up to the challenge & for this to happen, India requires to establish direct geographical contiguity with Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor & this is possible only when the entire PoK inclusive of Gilgit-Baltistan is under India’s control. And to make this happen, what India needs is not US support, but the support of Russia & Central Asian states like Uzbekistan & Tajikistan. That’s why one will notice that since last March, India’s bilateral interactions with Uzbekistan have increased manifold.

To ASD: he is like any other mortal human being who has nowhere else to go but live in his country of birth & hence he has to follow the laws of the land that he inhabits. Nothing surprising at all. No one had ever claimed that he was blessed with all-knowing wisdom.

To DASHU: matters are far more serious: China is considering airlifting on an emergency-basis all its citizens from Karachi who have been afflicted with Dengue:

I had uploaded it way back in 2012 & it shows the SSBN capable of carrying only 12 SLBMs. Only those SSBNs that can fit their SSBNs within their pressure-hulls can be humpless. Neither China’s nor India’s SLBMs are so advanced so as to be of compact design.

And here’s the flight of ACM B S Dhanoa & Wg cdr Abhinandan Varthaman on a Mig-21U Type 69 (and not MiG-21 Bison as claimed earlier by the ‘desi patrakaars’, since only single-seat MiG-21Bis were upgraded):

To RAJ: yes, it does in acoustic terms. Whether or not it will be made available to India is another matter.

To VOICEOFTHENEGLECTED: It has already started with fresh gusto, as evidenced by this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAhmmm01kIk

To DOWN SOUTH: It has already been explained several times before, i.e. attack helicopters as the only available means of delivering IMMEDIATE AIR-SUPPORT need to be Army-controlled, since the Army’s Corps of Air-Defence Artillery is also in control of the local airspace within which such attack helicopters will be reqd to operate. Therefore, the IAF has no say in airspace air-traffic management & hence it makes ZERO SENSE for the IAF to operate attack helicopters. The IAF can never deliver close air-support in less than 1 hour at best & hence this role is best transferred to the IA & its attack helicopters/helicopter gunships.

To JUST_CURIOUS: 1) Not at all. Wait for what emerges from the Vladivostok Summit between NaMo & Putin. 2) Of course it does. That’s how the union clout of Air India/Indian Airlines & BSNL was broken in the past. 3) The only realistic option is to wait for the LCA-AF Mk.1A to be subjected to airworthiness certification tests & the final results that are obtained. Anything & everything else about this aircraft is secondary & premature. 4) It is already finalised & awaits contract signature, which in turn boild down to the availability/unavailability of funds. 5) The GCC today is India’s biggest trading partner & hence relations between India & all GCC member-states have been growing by leaps & bounds. This upward trend will continue to a few more decades to come.

To SUSAN: There are 2 sources of data. The first one shows everyone what’s on-board, like Hensoldt MAWS sensors, APG-78 MMW radar from Northrop Grumman, etc etc:

AH-64E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anGlp4eopiw

Then we have the ‘IDIOT’s Version’ of the AH-64E of the IAF:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sy6nltxg_o

This ‘desi’ naalayak bandalbaaz claims that the IAF’s Apaches will be devoid of the APG-78 radar, etc etc. In reality, the radios & IFF transponders are all from HAL, while the BNET-A tactical data-link is from RAFAEL.

To HOODS007: Have already answered it several times before. The F-35 is a just a system of several systems available to NATO member-states. Absence of just one system jeapordises the effectiveness of the entire network-centric system of systems.

Prasun Da,
Thanks for the reply & information that you are given.
the people from Kargil to Chitral(including Kohistan) have a common identity, status, ideology, entity, that they have their own languages, culture, race, geography, and common economy. The Chenab which comes from Jammu. The second river is the Jhelum, which flows from the valley. The Actual jugular vein is the Indus river, which flows through Ladakh, Baltistan and Gilgit. If this region separates from Pakistan, the jugular vein will be cut.Pakistan gov know the importance of the area. But Indian gov takes 70 long years.

Some kind of a pattern emerging on arson crimes . Is it Pak black ops ?

Seems counter actions from Pak and China

Prasun da, in March this year India signed a 3 billion dollar deal for the lease of another Akula class submarine. Does the 3 billion also include money to be paid for Russian cooperation for our SSN submarine project? Is it similar to the secretive agreement with Russians as per which they helped with the development of Arihant? Because i see no other reason why India would pay such a huge amount merely for one sumbarine to be leased for 10 years

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To SIDHARTH: No follow-on orders for any AH-64E placed as yet. If any are ordered, they will then all go to the IA & not to the IAF. As for the LCH, this is the best the ‘desi patrakaars’ can come up with:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlyC8MoJsaU

Lots of communications through hand-gestures(!), no substantive soundbytes, no word about definite delivery schedules & not a word about when the fully weaponised LCH will be available for user-trials. In fact, the HMDS is from THALES:

https://www.thalesgroup.com/en/worldwide/defence/topowlr-helmet-mounted-sight-and-display-helicopters

To AZAAD: It is all self-explanatory. But the following is far more interesting:

1. In 30 years, Kashmiris have become experts on what to say in front of whom. So same person will say three different things in front of a foreign journalist, Indian journalist, and a local journalist. And to people close to him (s)he will say very different things.
2. In the 1990s, some English-speaking university student would be made to wear a mask and be paraded in front of a clueless foreign correspondent as JKLF commander. Next day same man would appear elsewhere as Hizbul commander.
3. From long (private) conversations with Kashmiris, my takeaway is that the removal of 370 has been accepted. People realise that the clock cannot be turned back. So they want to move on.
4. There is also a realisation that New Delhi has a point to prove in Kashmir this time and that there will be very little tolerance for "Intifada."
5. Will clashes happen? Some very likely, but nothing out of box. Will more men join terrorist groups? Again, no unusual spike in my view. Usual "Photo with gun" on social media, dead in 6 months.
6. North Kashmir (Sopore, Baramulla) is less willing this time to continue with madness of 30 years. South may continue for some time and then give up. PDP is finished. NC may be able to salvage, subject to how many Ram bhajans Farooq Abdullah is willing to sing.
7. As for "Indian story" in Kashmir, look out for Kashmiris in three-piece suits (like the current Mayor of Srinagar Junaid Azim Mattu & Shah Faesal) meeting Amit Shah. The Indian story will only deepen in Kashmir in the coming months.
8. How will normalcy be restored? Clue lies in how it was restored post-1963 Hazratbal crisis when the holy relic (a strand of the Holy Prophet’s beard) was stolen. Civil curfew continued for weeks as Kashmiris agitated for punishing people guilty of the theft.
9. Finally the government and the opposition came up with a face-saving formula. The padlocks of a few shops were broken by the police, giving the shopkeepers a reason to come back and resume business.
10. Rest assured, the Kashmiris will find their way. As a senior Army Commander in Kashmir is fond of saying: the Kashmiris are always on the winning side.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To SUVO: This fact has always been well-known to everybody concerned & has also been written about extensively. And here’s more ‘desi’ bullshit by those who can’t distinguish between a curfew & imposition of Section 144 of the Indian CRPC:

https://www.telegraphindia.com/opinion/kashmir-lockdown-its-been-a-month/cid/1702363#.XW9O4FpxDBc.twitter

To ANUP: All PSUs should undergo large-scale divestment, because PSUs never existed during the times of Asoka the Great, during Sher Shah Suri, during the reign of the Mughal Shahenshahs, & during the rule of the colonial Brits. Meanwhile, do make use of these images of the IAF’s first Rafale MMRCA as your screensavers:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EDpCTXRU4AAUKCT.jpg
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EDpCTy7UYAATP4H.jpg

To VOICEOFTHENGELECTED: And the pattern-setting cause is: gross dereliction of duty, criminal negligence & utter disregard for laid-down industrial safety regulations. Nothing more & nothing less. And cancellation of both visits were done at the request of the Indian side, & not due to China refusing to welcome them as is being claimed by Pakistan’s media.

To JUST_CURIOUS: Pakistan’s civilian economy may well be bankrupt, but its military economy isn’t. From being a “development state” till the mid-1970s, Pakistan has become a “security state” subsequently. As a result, economic development ceased to be the primary agenda of the state. Thus, during the 1970s, the real rate of growth of development expenditure was 21 per cent per annum and the rate of growth of defence expenditure was 2 per cent. During the 1980s, the rate of growth of development expenditure crashed seven-fold to 3 per cent and the rate of growth of defence expenditure escalated almost five-fold to 9 per cent. As a percentage of GDP, development expenditure has been falling from 9 per cent in the 1970s to 7.3 per cent in the 1980s to 4.7 per cent in the 1990s and to 3.5 per cent in the first decade of the millennium to 1.8 per cent in 2018-19. Expenditure on education and health was a paltry 0.25 and 0.5 per cent of GDP respectively in 2018-19 and has further declined to 0.17 and 0.02 per cent for 2019-20.

Meanwhile, here’s the Toyota Land Cruiser of the ISI’s DG seen 2 nights ago while on its way to Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore:

Hello Sir.Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain wrote an article today(published by the Asian age)in which he analyzed the capabilities of Pakistan's military.Posting the important bits here.I will most probably need 2 comments to post this but I would love to know your opinion.

what is the capability of the Pakistan Army to fight conventionally? The Pakistan Army is approximately half the size of the Indian Army, but its deployable strength is near matching due to India’s compulsion of securing the long border with China. In J&K, India has a larger deployment, but a part of that is employed on the counter-terror grid. Both countries have large armed police and paramilitaries with Pakistan’s Frontier Corps having been blooded fairly well due to the turbulent security situation along Pakistan’s western border with Afghanistan. An independent international rating company (Global Firepower), which comprehensively studies the strengths and capabilities of major armed forces, pegs the Pakistani capability at a power rating of 0.2798, where 0.0000 is considered a perfect score. The Indian armed forces, on the other hand, are rated at 0.1065, which is 2.6 times better, but this does not cater for the Chinese threat or other deployments. Indian analysts usually desire that a 1.7: 1 differential in capability in favour of India is necessary for India to end any conflict situation in a favourable position. Extrapolating these figures, which are based upon mathematical modelling, India appears to be in a favourable position. However, war is never about prescriptions and mathematics; it’s about surprise, deception, leadership, risk ability, morale, training and logistics. None of this can be clearly quantified. The outcome of war, therefore, remains as unpredictable as war itself. From a practical angle, the withered Pakistani economy cannot support a high intensity war after the expenditure of the stocks that remain with the armed forces at all times. The General Staff reserves of 15 days do not cater for ammunition, whose expenditure is contingent upon operational situations and length of engagements. Its energy capacity is limited to about 12 days of stocks at the national level. An effective Indian naval blockade may strangulate energy replenishment, although the land routes to Iran will remain open. If the war is to extend, adequate replenishments will still be a major challenge. Pakistan will depend on Chinese support to force Indian dual-use formations to remain deployed at the northern and eastern borders. A level of risk will always need to be taken by India to ensure balanced deployment. The Indian Air Force is fully capable of handling the Pakistan air threat. Air power is the total military capability of a nation for the use of aircraft and missiles. With the depletion of numbers in the IAF’s combat squadrons, the edge that the IAF enjoys is now down to around 1.4:1. PAF pilots are well-trained, with battle experience and high morale, but the equipment they fly, except the US-made F-16s, are mostly of Chinese origin and are qualitatively lower than the IAF, despite the latter’s ageing fleet of MiG-21s, even though upgraded. Munitions wise, the IAF has a decided edge. The much-publicised shortage of ammunition holding in the Indian Army has been largely made up in the past two years by resorting to a more delegated and empowered system of procurement and will no longer be a constraint.

Article to be continued in the next comment.....

2nd part of the article:
The much-publicised shortage of ammunition holding in the Indian Army has been largely made up in the past two years by resorting to a more delegated and empowered system of procurement and will no longer be a constraint.

Pakistan’s ability to spin propaganda as effective psychological warfare may project a much higher capability than actually exists. In reality it is unlikely to initiate conflict in the conventional domain. If its acts of hybrid war draw it into an armed standoff with India, it will threaten to fall back on the nuclear option with the potential employment of tactical nuclear weapons on proactively employed Indian battle groups (despite Imran Khan’s recent statement). However, it rarely seems mindful of the fact that it will be battling a nation equally armed with nuclear weapons, which may respond with massive retaliation as a second strike. On the million-dollar question of Pakistan’s capability to defend Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the event of a war being restricted to only the J&K theatre, Pakistan will have to take severe risk elsewhere to push additional forces into PoK should India decide to go for it. The use of tactical nukes there, if at all in desperation, may be more for demonstration than effect.
The likelihood of the employment of nukes in a territory it lays claims to may be extremely low.

Lastly, the perception in India that the Pakistani armed forces are a pushover is as misplaced as the Pakistani perception was about the Indian armed forces in 1965, when Ayub Khan launched Operation Gibraltar in J&K. Pakistan’s forces under arms are professional and competent. It will never be a cakewalk for India in our attempt to defeat them, although we outnumber them, have deeper resources to support war and a more competent military capability. What will remain to India’s advantage will be our capacity to wage a longer war with a choice of restricting it to a theatre or to extend it to a larger conflagration. An outcome of all-out or limited conventional war will invariably be in India’s favour, although the nation must never take that for granted.

What is your opinion about the Lt Gen's assessments sir?

Regards,
Enigma.

To ENIGMA: It is indeed extremely amusing to see senior retired war veterans trying to oversimplify matters with such ‘Opinions’ that are highly misleading & are devoid of contextualisation. For instance, when one is speculating about a 10-day war, will it be an all-out conventional high-intensity war or will it be a limited high-intensity war? And how will nuclear escalation be averted? These are questions which no senior military officer wants to answer for fear of being ostracised just because he wants to catch the bull by the horns! Such officers are all fence-sitters fearful of making the GoI angry & thereby being fearful of losing all the post-retirement perks & privileges.

To MURTHY: So what would you suggest? Park them in underground hangars?

To RON: Simply because it will invite military retaliation from across the LoC & India is not powerful enough to use either military force or military power for deterring such retaliatory attacks, it’s that simple.

To ASD: VMT.

To SIDHARTH: And yet none of those IDIOTS referred to the ASQR & GSQR of the IAF & IA, both of which state that the LUH must be single-engined. The Ka-226T is twin-engined & is therefore heavier than the single-engined LUH being developed by HAL. So much for the state-owned TV channels trying to educate the masses!!! By the way, I have uploaded additional slides above showing the PAR & the 205MHz active phased-array meteorological radar.

To AMIT BISWAS: It has always been ALARMING & that’s why despite the armed forces advising the GoI to embark upon a sustained 6-month long tube/rocket artillery fire-assault campaign across the LoC post-September 2016 shallow cross-LoC raids, the GoI since then has refused to give the green light for commencing such fire-assaults, probably because the ‘netas’ are risk-averse for such sustained military operations.

To DASHU: I contribute every month. The GoI is fully in control of events unfolding in J & K & there’s nothing to worry about. Even the foreign ministers of the UAE & Saudi Arabia firmly told Pakistan not to suck in the ‘Muslim Ummah’ into the J & K issue because the ‘Muslim Ummah’ has enough on its plate (like Iran, Yemen & Qatar) & it does not want any more trouble. As for those trying to picnic along the LoC, rest assured that no one prominent will ever venture to within 1.6km of the LoC simply because all such folks only want to make the natives of PoK their ‘Bali kas Bakhraa’ (sacrificial lambs) .

To SUMANTA NAG: There are several causes, such lack of overwhelming firepower of both the IA & IAF that is reqd for a sustained period of punitive deterrence. Neither the IA possesses the reqd no of 155mm field artillery howitzers nor does the IAF possess the reqd quantum of offensive strike combat aircraft, for starters.

To AZAAD: The S-400 LR-SAMs will start arriving in 2020 & all deliveries will be completed by 2023. Yes, there will be CAATSA-related sanctions coming by next year.

To HOODS007: It will have expendable RF-decoys & will not be of the reusable type destined for the Rafales.

To SBM: The support package for the additional six Akash-1 Sqns is now being finalised, following which the final contract will be inked. These will all be Akash-1S SAMs with Ku-band active terminal seeker. And Astra Rafael Comsys Pvt. Ltd. (ARC), the Joint Venture between Astra Microwave Products Ltd (AMPL), India and RAFAEL Advanced Defense Systems Ltd, will be licence-building the BNET-A SDR units on order for the IAF’s 40 Tejas Mk.1 LCAs.

Prasun,

1-How true is this .. http://www.defencenews.in/article/India-carpet-bombs-a-slew-of-multi-billion-dollar-defence-deals-586959
what impact does this have on other acquisition of additional rafales, Super Su30 upgrades, MMRCA 2.0, buying of additional mig29's, all types of rotorcrafts(LCH, Rudra, KA226T, LUH) etc. It does look like HAL blackmailed the MOd by creating the infra by spending crores and probably now stating that this would go down the drain if the orders are not placed. It also was reported that it would be spending crores on IJT36 when the IAF has already redesigned it training to a 2 step process(instead invest in SPORT version of tejas). Then there is HAL;s own basic trainer. wonder how would it juggle so many projects together.

2- the article says that each mk1a would cost around @417 Cr/$40 mm(which is still higher than Su30 mki) minus the operating costs. is this an acceptable number. How is it possible for JF 17 blk 3 to have an estimated cost of @32 mm.There were reports of Mirage upgrades being extremely slow. Shouldnt inefficiencies be addressed first?
3- article also claims the deal for C295 to be close to fimalization .. interestingly it says it also includes 6 for the ICG.. Now why would they just buy 6 ? will they be MPA's or transport ones?
4- upgrades of Il76/78 are due since a couple of years to MD90 A stds. will this happen anytime soon.
5- What is your take away from Modi's Russia visit & also Rajnath;s visits to Japan & S Korea

8- is this right on the part of Sr judiciary to behave like this .. https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/madras-cj-quits-protesting-transfer-to-meghalaya-hc/articleshow/71017829.cms
9- TOI has carried a half page full article on how India has to play @the UNHRC against pakis.. My question is why is we trying to be apologetic for something which we claim to be an internal matter. when the same UNHRC never thought of questioning the likes of china & US (yes for the cruel way they are trying to forceout illegal immigrants ie tiny tots separated from their parents) & the west in general for regularly creating humanitarian crisis across the globe by their high handed actions. Add the GCC countries for blatantly promoting Islamist terror.

Thanks Prasun. So with these six squadrons the total Akash sqn strength would be 14? Would all these fire the Akash 1S missile with the seeker?
If 5 regiments of S-400 are being delivered, would be safe to assume 10 sqn?

This is quite interesting - 14 Akash sqn, 9 MRSAM and 5-10 S-400 on order. Plus 16 upgraded Pechora sqn, this would be quite an improvement in IAF SAM coverage.

To SBM: The S-400s on order are 5 SQUADRONS, not regiments as reported by the ‘desi’ patrakaars. Akash-1S will eventually replace all existing Akash-1 SAMs. And as more Akash-1s are inducted into service, they will replace all 16 S-125 Pechora sqns within a decade.

To VIKRAM GUHA: 1 & 2) The line-of-credit is meant for setting up the infrastructure in the Far east of Russia in the Primoria region for timber harvesting. Due to global warming, gigantic tracts of land that were traditionally thick forests are now getting water-clogged & the wood is in urgent need of harvesting. This is a labour-intensive activity & thus India’s offer of sending in the human resources to cut the trees there & set up factories for cutting the wood.

To ASHISH GAUTAM: LoLz! Every SATCOM communication of every country is encrypted. The most probable reason why the Vikram lander malfunctioned was that its Doppler radar altimeter suddently located a whole bunch of ‘desi patrakaars’ from Indian TV channels already on the lunar surface, waiting to welcome Vikram. Don’t belive me? Then watch this:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ED3UJQuWkAATF0v.jpg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKcp5qU6FGU

This clown (Deepak Chaurasia) borrowed some fire-essistant HAZMAT clothing from the local Fire Station & wore them to ‘educate’ his audience about spacesuits! It is such ‘Ram Bharose’ patrakaars that give the country a bad name by staging such Nautankis for their audiences, whom they believe all hail from Jhumri Talaiiyaah.

And Chakothi is the place where the cross-LoC trading posts are located. Why the hell should the IAF bomb them??? As for Muzaffarabad, it was referred to as the entry-point for the IAF Mirages into KPK. The Mirage-2000s existed J & K over Tangdhar & headed towards Muzaffarabad so that Balakot would be right ahead along a northwesterly course. As for ‘other strikes’, the RM was referring to the subsequent artillery fire-assaults carried out 30km inside PoK.

To RON: 1) What is so unusual about that? They have been lying since February 24, 1004 when the all-parliamentary resolution on taking back PoK was passed. So what has happened between 1994 & now? 2) How can a wall be built when not even fences be erected all along the LoC? The three-tiered security fence runs for only 550km along the LoC. Over rivers & nallahs & rivulets how can any fence be erected? In addition, from area west of the Zoji La right up to Ladakh there’s no fence whatsoever due to the high-altitude mountains. 3) Because that will set a wrong precedent in terms of international law & will embolden the adversary to make even bolder claims & demands for more territory. 4) Pakistan’s dispute with India is ideological, not territorial. What it means is that for as long as there is a single Muslim citizen of India, Pakistan’s two-natgional theory cannot be labelled as a success story.

Prasun K. Sengupta said...

To BUDDHA: There were 2 different groups of people trying to approach the LoC. This was one group (pro-Pakistan): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EK86rkTzLDg

The other group (anti-Pakistan from PoK) was not even allowed to approach the LoC. Here’s the report: https://www.dawn.com/news/1504153

HAL’s LUH is far better than the Ka-226T. All those on RSTV bragging about the Ka-226T’s superiority were talking ONLY ABOUT high-altitude mountain flying, but none of them could explain why the Ka-226T has not been ordered by Russia’s military. And if the Ka-226T offers excellent high-altitude performance (like the one reqd over J & K & Sikkim/Arunachal Pradesh), then where’s the need to procure 200 Ka-226Ts? Why not procure only 50 Ka-226Ts to operate in such areas? And despite all talk about Ka-226T being offered under the ‘Make in India’ scheme, why is it (according to those RSTV panellists) that at most only 40% of the Ka-226T will be indigenously produced? If this indeed is such a pathetic situation, then I’d rather stick to the HAL-developed LUH & forego the Ka-226T option altogether, since a licence-built platform costs 2.5 times more than the same product imported off-the-shelf.

To SUJIT, BUDDHA & JUST_CURIOUS: Exactly who has confirmed that 33 Tejas Mk.1A LCAs are to be ordered in the near future? If you are all referring to what’s been appearing in the ‘desi’ press, then what has been published is only half of the story, because the ‘desi patrakaars’ were not present for the Q & A session of this seminar:

https://www.sidm.in/events/details/14th-international-conference-on-energising-indian-aerospace-industry-flight-plan-for-the-future

hi prasun
was the move to purchase ka 226 a premature one as they did not believe that the Luh will see the light of the day?

will russia be annoyed on the cancellation of the ka 226?
what are the chances of cancellation as we seem to have gone full hog on the kamov/

the expendable decoys looks rustic compared to the Leonardo ones ? is Israel also in the fray? how good are they? does it mean we have to put some sort of russian hardware for ew CONTROL for the expendable decoys?

have they made similar stuff?

you mentioned that the akash will b e replaced by akash -1s , dont you think the QRSAM AND THE AKASH have a similar role to play given the their same range ?
of course the qrsam is much more modern !

as the same type of seeker will go on the akash and qrsam dont you think it is a risk, if the enemy finds out a way to jam one of them?

as we seem to have made modern version of the akash , is there a program to fit a n iir imager on it ? will it be feasible like the russian way of sending 2 missiles salvo withe different seekers?

this is on the basis of our making the IIR seeker for our abm missiles and asat missiles ,
will foreign OEMS give us IIR imagers when they know we will use it for ABM purpose?

To JUST_CURIOUS: VL-Astra & QR-SAM are one & the same. The shipborne (naval) version of QR-SAM will be vertically launched.

To SBM: MiG-29UBKs can't provide fire-control for BVRAAMs. The Zhuk-M2E is not fitted on MiG-29UBKs. The upgraded MiG-29UBKs all have everything else as the MiG-29UPGs, but minus the Zhuk-M2E. Hence, the upgraded MiG-29UBKs can fire only R-73Es during aerial engagements, while directional cues for Kh-31K ARMs comes from the on-board RWRs.

To VJ: NewsX is going into a tizzy without checking vital factoids. The vital factoids are all explained here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pinIMhUGOYI (watch from 00.11.34 till 00.13.14)

The five villages to be handed over to the Pandavas by the Kauravas were: Baghpat, Indrapat, Panipat, Sonepat & Tilpat. They were all located in a land area (called BrahmsDesha or Brahmadesha or Aryavartaa) contained between the Ganga & yamuna rivers. This landmass as per the Rigveda was created by for habitation by the Gods & Goddesses (just like Kashyapa Mira, or modern-day Kashmir Valley, was created by Sage Kashyap by draining sea-water from that land). Scientifically, what this means is that the local earthly natives were forbidden to inhabit such areas & only specially-endowed humans related to the Gods & Goddesses were allowed inhabit such areas. What this means in scientific terms is that TERRA-FORMING was resorted to, i.e. a landmass & its environment was specially created & this landmass would be free of natural diseases & bacteria that otherwise afflicted only the earthly natives. And TERRA-FORMING is a capability possessed only by Type-1 & Type-2 civilisations (and not earthly civilisations that come under the Type-0 category) & they can also undo the results of TERRA-FORMING, i.e. eliminate all vestiges of such unique landmasses.

Therefore, in conclusion, what all this indicates is that archaeological discoveries made, like ancient pottery etc etc are by no means representative of the sophistication or backwardness of that particular human species that inhabited such TERRA-FORMED landmasses during the Mahabharata era. Instead, those archaleolgical discoveries are associated with the earthly human settlements that existed outside by around the TERRA-FORMED landmass at the same time. In other words, not a single archaeological artifact/relic can be classified as being so technologically advanced as that prevailing INSIDE the TERRA-FORMED landmasses. And it is this absence that continues to create enormous confusion among archaeologists, historians & astronomers.

To RAD: There was absolutely no need for importing Ka-226Ts. But as yet no contract has been inked for procuring the Ka-226Ts. Only MoUs have been inked. The easiest decoy to make is an expendable RF decoy & it is amazing why the DRDO can come up even with such a simplistic system. Akash-1S can attain a higher altitude than the QR-SAM. The dual-mode seeker will go on the Akash-NG variant. To date, no Astra-1 BVRAAMs have been ordered.

To JUST_CURIOUS: It is IMPOSSIBLE to install the BM-21 Grad MBRL launcher on any lightweight vehicle. In mountainous terrain, lightweight solutions are required, like this:

To AMIT BISWAS: They are nothing else but ramjet-powered missiles, be they SAMs or ASCMs or SSMs. Nammo is also developing ramjet-powered 155mm artillery rounds, all of which is explained here:

https://www.armytimes.com/resizer/f4EDdmcY3OSqKuzD9nc3K4gbOZ0=/1200x0/filters:quality(100)/arc-anglerfish-arc2-prod-mco.s3.amazonaws.com/public/LXY674PC2BEOXONDECHXG3434I.jpg

https://www.edrmagazine.eu/nammo-ramjet-artillery-round-a-game-changer

https://www.defensenews.com/digital-show-dailies/dsei/2019/09/10/the-real-reason-why-nammo-rolled-out-a-ramjet-artillery-concept/

What could be even more significant for Nammo is the work that is now underway to develop a completely new projectile with a range of up to 100km when fired from a standard 155mm/L52 tube gun. It forms part of our Extreme Range concept, which utilizes ramjet technology–a type of air breathing system where the shell has an internal rocket engine that takes in oxygen through the nose of the projectile and in turn uses it to burn the propellant, thus generating thrust. You can read more about this innovative technology on page 16. We have called this technology HE-ExR™ (High Explosive Extreme Range) and it is integral to our goal of creating ammunition with extreme range that does not add any additional load to the gun. Considering that the current maximum range of regular shells is around 40 km, this new technology with a range of up 100km will be a huge improvement. Compared to other systems with that kind of range, the shell will provide high-precision capability at a competitive price point. At Nammo we believe the Extreme Range concept will form part of a new market segment, providing artillery that has a multi-domain capability – a true force multiplier. In Norway, for example, we have a very long coastline. With our technology, future armies will be able to use land-based artillery to strike naval vessels. Instead of supplying several different products to our customers for each scenario, we will instead be able to provide something that makes what they already have more flexible, covering a wider spectrum of requirements.

UNKNOWN: If India does so, then from where will the funds reqd for the second tranche of Rafales come from?

To VIKRAM GUHA: That website already indicates that EoIs have already been received for some of those projects.

To LOKI: 1 & 2) Why are you ASSUMING that the warships are under-armed & why are you also ASSUMING that lots of extra space is available? 2) Both P-15B DDGs and P-17A FFgs will have EL/M-2248 MF-STAR radars & Barak-8 LR-SAMs. 4) Because development of MIRVed warheads is still in progress.

2 very important events that bears out your ' I told you so ' again. It shows that this Government has INTENT

1.This is very important. Mr.Jitendra Singh, Union Minister (PMO affairs) is a MP from J&K. This is a statement of intent from the Government of India & a reiteration of Parliamentary Resolve.
Next agenda is retrieving parts of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and making it a part of India. It is not only my party's commitment, but it was also part of a unanimously passed resolution of the Parliament in February 1994. This was passed by the Congress-led government of Narsimha Rao.
https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/retrieve-parts-of-pok-to-merge-with-india-jitendra-singh-1597820-2019-09-11

2. The law has to take it's own course for the Indian Union to bring normalcy to J&K, specifically the 55sqkm in Srinagar Kashmir Valley. It’s a historic beginning!
Today after 30 years, Jammu TADA Court began trial against terrorist Yasin Malik in the killing of 4 unarmed IAF men including Sq. Ldr. Ravi Khanna. Court asks Tihar to produce Malik. Matter comes for hearing now on Oct 1. NBW against other accused.
Story of how terrorist Yasin Malik unfolded the brutal killing of IAF men with friends. Macabre Dance of Jihad around the dead bodies on Jan 25th, 1990. Malik deserves nothing short of death sentence by the court of law.

What message does it send to an educated youth in Kashmir who is brainwashed in the name of jihad to pick up the gun? How can we even curb radicalisation when a militant roams free in the Valley and is now worshipped as a so-called “revolutionary”?

hi prasun
the mpatgm seems to be unique in its aerodynamic layout. Its diff from the javelin which has umpteen wings in the mid body. The mid body wings are smaller and the rear ones are also smaller than the spike and javelin, so lesser drag overall . cheers to VEM and who ever designed this.

they seem to have cracked the lift design of the missile

i do remember that you mentioned that the IIR seeker was from hughes in the US , still true??
i wonder if it has TVC?

was there hand holding by any body and what is the imported stuff in the missile?

in the latest tranche of missile purchase, have we gone in fort the later version of the aa-12 ie the rvv-bd version?
what are the improvements?

will we able to make an anti supersonic missile missile out of the qrsam?
will it be good as the barak 8 ? will it be good as the mbda CAAM missile ?

how are we progressing on the aesa seeker for missiles and what band do they generally operate?

Dear Sir,

There have been number of reports regarding SU-30MKIs. None of them very complementary. How are true are these? It was always known it had a huge RCS but questions are being asked about its range, engine effectiveness?

PAF claim that they made it dance to their tune and then our internal reports. What is the truth?

To AMIT BISWAS: It is all 100% true, rest assured. And after the govt of the day violated its social contract with the electorate, what followed was inevitable, i..e. the govt was unable to impose the writ of law & communal cleansing inside Kashmir began.

To KAUSTAV: VMT. 1) This is now a strategic inevitability because the very future of Central Asia depends on it. For this, India has joined forces with Russia because both of them have a vested interest in containing China (and consequently Pakistan) in their own unique ways. Thus the Eurasian Customs Union arc will now commence in Russia, traverse through Central Asia & culminate in South Asia via India. 2) https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/yasin-malik-not-only-killed-my-husband-but-ruined-us-slain-iaf-officer-s-wife/story-kfX3CkGXIVDXlq3NOJS6ML.html

Thus, the writing on the wall is that normalcy can be restored in Kashmir ONLY IF the govt of the day does not shy away from implementing its part of the social contract that it had struck with its citizens. Even the foreign media is now realising this:

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/12/opinion/we-never-moved-back-to-kashmir-because-we-couldnt.html#click=https://t.co/8un5M228Fp

And as I had stated earlier, the latest weapons haul in Kathua was ferried by Pakistan along riverine routes from Bamiyal in Punjab:

As events unfold, even POTUS will come to the realisation that undertaking military kinetic operations inside Pakistan is the only option now left on the table, like this carpet-bombing that the US recently carried out over an Iraqi island:

To RAD: MPATGM bears greater resemblance to the Spike-MR. Its seeker’s processor has come from Raytheon, not Hughes. ATGMs don’t require TVC. Only RVV-BD variant of the R-77 is now in production. Desi AESA seeker will emerge only by the middle of the following decade.

To ANUP: China cannot help Pakistan because Pakistan does not engage in money laundering using China’s currency. Only those countries whose currencies are used for money laundering have the decisive say within FATF.

To RAT2: Were any of those comments accompanied by any undeniable corroborative evidence? If not, then they all deserve to be consigned to the dustbin. Let Pakistan produce its radar imagery to prove that the PAF had downed an IAF Su-30MKI. If such evidence cannot be produced, then it there’s no use/value in such claims being made by the PAF.

To THE HUNDRED: 1) How can the 1st P-17A FFG be ready for any kind of trials when only its superstructure (that too only 35% complete) will be launched on to the wet-basin only this October? 2) Yes, the three P-15 DDGs won’t be receiving either EL/M-2248 MF-STAR or the Barak-8s. They will retain their existing CASHMERE combat management system & all existing weaponry.

Over 15,000 soldiers backed by tanks, medium artillery, helicopters and transport aircraft will be part of the Mountain Strike Corps’ maiden exercise, ‘HimVijay’, at over 10,000 feet in Arunachal Pradesh next month. The exercise will be held away from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. It will coincide with the expected visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping next month. The exercise assumes greater significance because the Army will for the first time see in action its integrated battle groups (IBG)—the brainchild of Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat. Three mountain IBGs carved out of the Panagarh-based 17 Corps’ (Mountain Strike Corps) 59 Mountain Division will be in action. The exercise will see in action the AN32s, C130J Super Hercules and the C17s besides helicopters from both the Army Aviation and the IAF. Assets with the Tezpur-based 4 Corps will be used in the operation while personnel would be completely from the Mountain Strike Corps. The exercise will be held in Arunachal Pradesh and will see in action three IBGs involving 5,000 troops each. Gen Rawat wanted to create integrated units for the border that will be self-sufficient with artillery, armoured, combat engineers and signal units. As such, each Corps is to have three Divisions, with each Division to have three Brigades. The overall idea is to break down the Divisions into IBGs with all essential elements. The IBGs are primed to strike in less than 24 hours. They will be sector and terrain specific—in effect, the IBGs in the North will not be the same as the IBGs in the Western sector. The resources, in terms of equipment, will be determined by the terrain, enemy threat and the task.

https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/government-plans-gps-tracking-to-prevent-rogue-drones/story-9Zey5nCjgGfBm9XMvYqaaK.html

Government is 'thinking' on this issue for last 6 years. Why is Govt hell bent on a centralized control of drone flying. How much time will be left for retaliation if Delhi based GPS traker tracks a drone in orissa comming to a 'prohibitory area'.

In my view regulation of drone operations should be tranferred to state law enforcement. Drone defence system on important buildings should be installed / or other suitable solutions (jammer based systems mounted on poles etc).It is possible to monitor estimated 5 lakh drones in the country froma centralized portal?

Because of its inability to come up with a solution govt has banned all drone operations. Commercial Drones should be given selected flight routes in all cities which will make e commerce/swiggy business a better delivery infrastructure. Mr Hardeep Singh Puri should ask for better advisors like you.

Your thoughts on this?

hi prasun
when the seeker and processor is US, they can always stop us making missiles . How are we positioned to make them? is there any research on that , it being very hi tech?

why cant we make the mfstar type radar for ship as we have already some experience in aesa radars like the UTTAM, and qrsam radars and swordfish etc? this can always be integrated with desi sams on board.

china seems to have cracked the aesa cooling by offering the j-17 a aesa radar without liquid cooling . The stated range for jf-17 aesa radar is 170 km which will be headache for our fighters. I believe the jf-17 will become a headache rather than the f-16 in the long run , what is ur opinion?.

what are the advances in the new r77-bd over the previous models? is it better in range than the c-5 version of amraam ?

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/up-treasury-has-paid-i-t-dues-of-all-cms-ministers-since-1981/articleshow/71104319.cms

To RAD: Designing & making seekers isn’t the problem. The most crucial deficiency is in the arena of critical components like processor chips. Similarly, it is no use making 99.99% of a 155mm towed howitzer indigenous while importing the crucial ball-bearings that are reqd for gun stabilisation & elevation movements of the barrel. It is like claiming that the Tejas Mk.1 LCA is an indigenously developed product despite more than 70% of its material ingredients being imported.

And our forces are making posters of dodging amraam's. Should we not be making the otherside dodge. Reading many forums one thing becomes clear the SU-30 has been deflated and along with it IAF.

A JF17 equipped with asea, and the chatter says also pl-15, how much of a threat will that be to our SU's? Have they managed to close the gap, edge ahead even and have a credible air force on the cheap?

To RAT2: A dialogue of the deaf-n-dumb doesn't enlighten anyone. The IAF's CAS had mentioned both the Rafale & S-400 LR-SAMs as punitive deterrents, i.e. the Rafale's ability to strike deep into the PAF's air bases & strategic installations by using SCALP-type PGMs; and the S-400's ability to target AEW & CS platforms. No one from the IAF ever spoke about the Rafale's ability to intercept hostile MRCAs. As for JF-17s with AESA-MMR and PL-15, freely available information shows that such AESA-MMRs do not possess the fire-control envelop reqd for guiding LRAAMs like the PL-15. Hence anyone engaging in banter WRT AESA-MMR/PL-15 combination is spewing out pure baloney & disinformation.

In addition, he has made powerful enemies in the non-Muslim world by steadfastly clinging on to the false narrative (as spelled out in his interviews to both RT & Al Jazeera) about Pakistan becoming a victim of terrorism due to its joining the US-led global war on terror, and not remaining neutral in September 2001. He still hasn’t figured out the meaning of “either you are with us, or you are against us”, meaning Pakistan simply had no option of remaining neutral. In other words, his narratives are full of more historical revisionism than even Adolf Hitler or Zia-ul-Haq & consequently he will meet the same gory fate as Hitler & Zia. The PAF at a celebratory event earlier this evening released video footage of just 1 of the 4 strikes that it claimed to have carried out on February 27 as part of OP Swift Retort. The target shown was a Brigade Ammo Storage/Support Depot at Narian in Jammu:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHplvcfGL3I

On GoogleEarth it can be located at: 33°11'41.60"N 74°16'21.85"E

Also felicitated were only 2 PAF pilots:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpHkbWFC-VY

Here’s the full coverage of this event:

To RAJESH MISHRA: here are his two latest interviews:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRTC3xBEHt0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpfaJtrTMfc

Meanwhile, all indications are that this visit of the US CENTCOM Commander to Pakistan was meant to 'inform' Pakistan that the US had pinpointed Hamza Bin Laden's location inside KPK, Pakistan, & was about to launch a military operation aimed at killing him:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFvIqGGSp5w

To KAPIL: This explains it all with contextualisation:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIeSKZomB_o

To SIDHARTH: It was the TV-guided H-4 PGM launched by a PAF Mirage-IIIEA while flying over PoK. But it was launched in a hurry & hence missed its target. For, if the PAF had intended to drive home a point, it would have conducted a pinpoint strike with a PGM that did not contain any warhead. Instead, claiming that the PGM was deliberately aimed at a point further away from its intended target does not make any sense & instead it lends credence to the conclusion that the PGM’s aimpoint was chosen in great hurry, i.e. it was not a successful effects-based sortie. It is also noteworthy that no video footage of the remaining 3 air-strikes were shared, meaning they were attempted with conventional unguided bombs.

Question of ambushing any Su-30MKI does not even arise since the Su-30MKIs were flying defensive CAPs inside India-controlled airspace. Air ambush could have been staged only if the Su-30MKIs were flying Barrier CAPs inside hostile airspace. And had Wg Cdr Abhinandan been accompanies by his wingman flying a MiG-21 Bison equipped with an EL/L-8222 ASPJ, the AIM-120C-5 AMRAAM would not have gotten near any MiG-21 Bison. Had Abhinandan’s MiG-21 Bison been carrying an EL/L-8222 ASPJ, or if he had been accompanied by his EL/L-8222-equipped wingman, then Abhinandan would never have been shot down.

To BUDDHA: How can the PAF damage any Indian military installation when it itself is saying that its PGMs were deliberately targetted in the wooded areas beyond the installation? In any case, according to this programme, IAKN has begun suffering from deep anxiety & depression:

Prasunda,

Limited War & CI Ops are okay with the Army now having merged the civil political & military objectives. Maybe Pakistan has become a country only capable of limited War with integration of the Terrorists & Mujahids in their ORBAT & Indian Army prepares for that. In which case, our Armed Forces are now not much different in orientation from the Chinese Armed Forces who also have been accustomed to Political War objectives. If everybody is preparing to fight limited wars, both Pravin Sawhney's vision of an Army ready for hot war & the Indian Army now focussed on Limited War are correct. The entire premise is that a hybrid conflict will be fought in a Limited War environment. Even the small IBGs seem to be geared in that fashion & they have only Air Strike Support, not sufficient Integrated Air Assets as part of the IBGs. It seems, nobody prefers a hot war. Is it because of the nuclear overhang or the realisation that only Economic Growth brings real power?

Prasun sir,
What pravin sawhney is say that we are not prepared for hot war or even limited war to be able to win.
Then how can we capture pok?
And he is also saying creating RR was a mistake. What is your opinion?

Prasun sir, how much is the radius of coverage of El 8222 jammer.. I mean what is the distance that an aircraft without any jammer must be in to be covered by another aircraft with El 8222jammer??. ..
2- in one of ur article u had said that though entire 125 fleet of mig21bison were modified to carry 8222 jammer pod , only 40% were upgraded.. What is the status now after 27th Feb..? Does the iaf had taken or ordered more jammers??
3- does the IRST of su30mki can provide weapon quality tracks or just only help in early detection?
4-regarding SSS.. after u told I read about them and surprisingly they are saying that while in the past they were in partnership with LMT , these guns are complete indigineous products and they are the OEM..
5- u also have said that how mig29 upgrade was screwed up..does that means the mig29upg though is flying with ELT 568 jammer is still devoid of MAWS?. how effective will it be then without MAWS??.
6- are our entire fleet of su30mki carrying 8222..or we will hear about screw ups here as well?..

hi prasun
i believe the meteor was first integrated on the mirage 2000 for testing and then on to the rafale. why is india shying away from getting the missile from france ? is there any decision by france not to allow it/. common sense entails we have to have a decisive advantage over pak and that entails getting the meteor.

m2000 flying at 30000 ft with meteor would be a formidable challenge to any fighter .given the height and range advantage . what would be the approx price of the meteor?
i am sick of listening to the inferior r-77 that was so called out gunned by the amraam c-5

does the latest version of the r-73 equal the asraam as irt seems to have a IIR 2 color seeker and improved range?

So it can be said that Abhinandan was shot down coz his wingman either got busy somewhere else or may be didn't covered him deliberately.... Or may on orders of ATC.... So much idiotic move....
